  • Two estranged sisters prepare for their mother's death.
SISTERS is used with permission from Jessica Brunetto. Learn more at jessbrunetto.com.
Emily has been caring for her ailing mother for some time, taking on the difficult task on her own. It's not an easy life, and Emily has moved back into the family home, leaving her husband and strained marriage behind.
But when her estranged sister Andy arrives for a visit, long-simmering grievances and resentments come to the surface for Emily. Andy leads a full, busy life in Los Angeles as an aspiring actress, absorbed in her affairs, while Emily has put a lot of her own life on hold. But when Andy comes home, the sisters have it out.
Written and directed by Jess Brunetto, this short family dramedy accomplishes the remarkable trick of detailing two characters' arcs with acuity and depth -- no mean feat in a short format. But it does this by yoking their growth to the ebb and flow of their relationship, which is given life thanks to smart, emotionally sharp writing and great performances that balance sharp humor with heartfelt emotion.
Rendered in a subdued, slightly moody naturalistic style, the storytelling sets up each character quickly and precisely, with Emily as the put-upon primary caregiver and Andy as the striving, self-absorbed actress. But the pace ignites when the sisters come together, both bristling with tension. Yet the writing also weaves in moments of genuine sisterly togetherness, which allows us to see how they once were close. Even as adults, they still oscillate between coming together for support while jawing at one another over faults and irritations.
Mary Holland as Andy and Sarah Burns as Emily -- both well-established comedic character actors -- are terrific together, hitting the understated beats of passive aggression that often shield their messy, more vulnerable sides. But, being sisters, there's no way they can hide from one another. And when their truths come out, allowing them to share their troubles, they find a way back to one another, at long last.
There's an acidic endnote to the conclusion of SISTERS, keeping in line with its unvarnished, warts-and-all take on emotion. Recognizing how dark, difficult feelings often exist alongside humor allows the story to be real while neatly sidestepping sentimentality. The result is a funny, heartfelt yet acerbic portrait that is true to the burden of caregivers and the difficulties of infertility, made bearable when shared with a sister who is there for it all, no matter what.

That little smile from Mum at the end. She went happy.

While training to become a nursing assistant, one of the things I learned is that people still hear everything going on in the world around them while in a coma (in fact, all of their senses are fully intact), they just can't open their eyes or respond. I like to think that the mother, hearing her daughters' interactions with each other, was waiting for them to make peace with one another before letting go.

That's all the mom wanted, for them to get along and help one another, the smile on her face told it all and then she dies❤️

It plays almost like a dark comedy. Both kids do not have their life together and they only want to complicate it more with this eerie codependency + throw a child into the mix.
My favorite line that flew under the radar: "I'm in my THIRTIES..." as if her life was practically over.
The flatline of their mom nearly plays like a rimshot. I dig this movie but the humor is so subtle I think most people will see this as a straight up happy ending.

I worked in a LOT of nursing homes and hospitals and I was ALWAYS told THAT even when people appeared to be in a vegetative state..that the sense of hearing was the last to go. So, my patients could have VERY likely been able to absorb the comments of THOSE people who were visitors or staff working around them. This was just a lovely short film. Kudos to how it wrapped up ALL the loose ends in the story! I loved it! Warmest regards from Greensboro, NC.

I loved this! Two of my favourite actresses too❤
The smile on their mother’s face before she passed, said everything.
All she ever wanted was for her daughters to love and support each other, and Andy offering Emily the chance of becoming a mother herself via surrogacy? Was absolutely beautiful❤
Great short! This depicts the sometimes love hate relationship between siblings? Absolutely perfect! Right down to a T💯

The short kind of went back and forth with both sisters apparently from the way their mom raised them caused a lot of trauma in their lives. They would seem to be polar opposites at times, but reconnecting. I truly believe since they really only had each other growing up due to the way their mom did them, they actually loved each other. The part where the one sister became a surrogate and got paid to do it for the other sister, you kind of had to suspend belief. Not the best I’ve seen on OMELETO, but watching it did hold my attention.. That was my least favorite part of this short. Makes me wonder how the surrogate baby will be raised. History has a tendency to repeat itself, and I couldn’tell if they were both pregnant at the end or if she was having twins, or what.

    • @gemstar7286

Someone should tell them that the estate, which includes the house and all her mother clothes, jewelry and other belongs, cannot be distributed to her heirs until the will is processed by probate, and an executor can be named. If the mother has a will, it could be months, and if not, years.
