Wonderfully musical playing. I felt like I was hearing music and not a series of flatpicking exercises. I second the sentiment that it was a Grierish version and that's a great thing. Coming down the lineage from Clarence to Tony to DG, we have all very musical and tasteful players and that is what I hear here. so here, here sir and I hope to hear you play live sometime.
Thanks! I actually anchor my pinky pretty firmly on the top, kind of like a banjo player. This was more common when I was learning as a kid. I know of very few players who can play well without anchoring the wrist or pinky. I can think of two. David Grier (whose wrist kind of floats a 1/4" above the bridge pins), and Danny Roberts, the great mandolin player with New Tradition and the Grascals.
Thank you, sir. I'm distantly related to Valentine Wall Hatfield, so apparently we are cousins somehow. You can take the Hatfield out of the feud, but you can't take the feud out of the Hatfield. Peace, God Bless, Andy
@mandohat - the guitar sounds superb. I used to spend a lot of time hanging out at the North Dallas Guitar Center - and it was there that I realized that even though I've owned some outstanding Martins, and still own a Santa Cruz Model D that is beyond awesome - that some pretty inexpensive models by "lesser" brands can be every bit as nice as the high end Martin or smaller Luthier models that all the best known flatpickers seem to play.
@flatpikinguitar I took that video down. The guitar is a Seagull M6, I think. I bought it for $300 used from guitar center because it was the best guitar I could afford at the time. I took the neck off and shimmed it about 3mm back to correct the intonation. It's the best intonated guitar I've ever played! It spent 5 days with a Tone Rite one it, and that really seemed to open up the sound.
I was considering an old martin, bourgeois, or Chris Bozung... Should I consider a seagull artist? Hard to tell from youtube. Do they have the ring of a good dreadnaught?
the advantage of a seagull is comfort and a short scale length. they have a good tone, but do not push like a big dread. if you want that big flatpicking tone, a Martin-style guitar is still the machine for the job.

Oh My... I don't know if I have ever heard that much 'WoW' packed into a mere minute and 43 seconds.
Great player and has the heart of a teacher. If your ever looking for a master class teacher on guitar give Andy a try. He is awesome.
Thanks, John!
Beautiful. I would never think that turkey in the straw could make me emotional but this did.
Your arrangement is so fresh and tasty, love this!

or will it sound bad?
