Looks like coco coir and probably added hydroponic nutrient solution..kept out of the rain also otherwise box would have flooded.

Also, do they add any kind of food to the water? I’d have bug netting over it. You eliminate so many possible pests from the soil…but you need to feed the plants - maybe hydroponic plant food
