For years I've heard of this infamous episode. This was surprisingly poignant. Poor Marcia had real problems, but in true Brady fashion they were wrapped up within the hour. I think I would've actually cried if Maureen McCormick portrayed this.
The issues really weren't wrapped up in the "hour," as Marcia said to Cindy at the end of the episode that she would be struggling with alcoholism for the rest of her life. Also, the subplot about building the trauma center can be seen as a "time jump" that made the "hour" last many months -- unless somehow the Brady adults could build a trauma center as fast as the Brady kids could build a clubhouse in the old series. The episode wasn't perfect, but it was poignant, as you said, and one most realistice episodes of any in the Brady franchise.

Had the series lasted longer, they may have revisited Marcia's problem in future episodes. Alcoholism never really goes away and it was very taboo at that time. With things being more woke and holistic, the storyline could have focused on her being in the AA meetings with others. It showed that problems like this do not discriminate among income lines. Marcia had everything going but she still took to the bottle which is what made this a good episode. It showed her feeling isolated, dealing with post partum after birthing children as many young mothers go through this trying to live up to their parents, siblings or friends.
Okay, hear me out on this. I'm 50 years old and have watched every episode of The Brady Bunch a billion times .... At 36:00, Wally and Carol come walking into the room where Marcia is at. They enter from the LEFT side of the point of view. However, Mike and Carol's room, which is where Marcia is in, is the first room coming up the stairs to the LEFT! So, this makes it look like they walked past the room and nonchalantly walked back into it from the other side. Anybody else getting this?
Why do Cindy and Gary seem to think they can't see each other anymore if she takes a new job? It's not like she'd be moving to a new city. Besides, don't people usually find dating more risky if it's between a boss and employee?
Agree. That was dumb, they’d have an easier time starting a relationship without worrying about how it would affect their work lives. People are more reluctant to date coworkers and bosses because it could cause ethical questions when it comes to promotions, and some companies even forbid it.
I've heard about this episode for years, but never got around to watching it. I just can't see this woman as Marcia! If it was the real thing, I think this would have been really poignant and hard to watch. But this isn't our Marcia, the little girl we watched grow up. This is, I don't know, Cousin Marge, Cousin Oliver's older sister.
But Robert Reed approved the storyline. He had past issues with Sherwood Schwartz over storylines not being realistic enough on the original show. It was around that time All in the Family changed sitcoms with realistic issues. Reed saw the huge success Norman Lear had and wanted Schwartz to incorporate realism on the show, showing how hard it really is blending two families.
Maureen McCormick politely declined to reprise her role as Marcia Brady in the short ived 1990's CBS prime time situation comedy/drama "The Brady's"-hence-Leah Ayers "won" the role. One of the reasons for the early demise of this series was CBS airing it at 8:00 P.M. Central Time-opposite ABC's young family comedies "Full House" and "Family Matters"-which-ironically-was a then "modern" day television incarnation of what the ORIGINAL "Brady Bunch: series on ABC (1969-1974) WAS.
@pamelamays4186 That's why they didn't do more than Greg's smoking in the original series, would have been venturing into ABC after school special territory. Lol
so this 1 season series came after the 1988 "A very Brady Christmas" movie which i think everyone loved just like i did-- why couldn't Maureen return as Marsha? anyone know?
Maureen was pregnant at the time The Bradys and didn't want to do a full series so soon after giving birth Plus Marcia's alcoholism storyline hit WAY too close to home for Maureen since she herself struggled with alcohol and substance abuse so she didn't return for The Bradys
It only lasted 6 episodes personally I think it was too early for its time. If it was on today it would probably be a hit series. Obviously you'd have to change a couple things to make it work. But I think it would work. "Like Wood Work"
I think it was on CBS. I saw the first ep and did not follow it after that so I was not disappointed to see it go. Funny they say the 60s has lousy hairstyles but these more controlled hairstyles in the early 90s were really bad.
From what I recall, it was just too different from the original to attract the old fans back. This episode especially. (“They made Marcia an alcoholic!”)
She didn't boycott the show. She had given birth to a daughter at the time of production for the series and therefore, she was unable to reprise her role as Marsha.

WOW, even coming before Miss America didn't give this show a boost. Even the 1985 pageant gave Gimme A Break and 227's premiere a boost in numbers which 227 was able to hold on to. CBS should have given this show another season to catch on. I would have loved to see them address Robert Reed's illness into the storyline as he would sadly end up dying in 1992. It would have been interesting to see the family react and cope with Mike's death.
I'm surprised that Robert Reed was doing the show anyway, as he hated the show, and wanted to leave. He didn't do the last episode of "The Brady Bunch" because he was fired, and if it had gone the next season, Mike was going to be "killed off" to explain his absence. I think I heard that Sherwood Schwartz has little involvement in this, so maybe that is why Robert Reed (who hated Schwartz, and the feeling was mutual) agreed to come back.
@@dhenderson1810 I was thinking that too but Reed did do some later Brady specials over the years. He also knew he was dying so he probably did this is a silent public goodbye to his fans. Christine Taylor looks like Maureen McCormick
I hope there's better quality of these episodes
If you get the Brady bunch boxset this show is in the boxset
Nope.
Marsha Marsha Marsha!
The Brady's have alcohol in the house?!
LMAOOOOOOOOO!
I never even saw a toilet in their home!😂😂😂😂😂
Actually, if you watch the measles episode, you can see Mike mixing a martini. And when the great grandparents visit, they drink sherry. In the pilot, Carol suggests that Mike take a tranquilizer, and then they have champagne.
@@knotheadusc oh wow. They must of "cleaned it up," after the first season. Lol, imagine having the Bradys cleaned up
rocknroller 77 Depends on how you look at it. On an episode in season four, Bobby and Cindy got caught trying to sneak out of the house to skinny dip at a neighbor’s house.
36:01 Why did Carol & Wally enter from that direction??
It doesn't make sense that Marcia would develop a drinking problem.
I'm sure that Maureen stated in her book, that she was rather intoxicated with party favours.... Please don't quote me. Inform me. I also think her nickname at parties was "Hoover" ...
because she could hold a lot of drink?
No. A lot of cocaine.@@richardhunter132
For a minute I thought the title "Bottoms Up" was about Robert Reeds time away from the set.
Hitting the Jack
So did Bobby not grow in real life?
In the Brady 500 Bobby had an accident in a auto race that left him wheelchair bound & probably not able to ever walk again but he did grow up
WOW, even coming before Miss America didn't give this show a boost.
Reed kept his illness a secret from everyone, the cast would only knew when he was sitting waiting to die. I remember Florence Henderson admitted that Robert was fiercely private and didn't want attention as he wanted to die in peace. She lamented on how unhappy he was over the decades given his issues with his homosexuality. He always kept a good face for the children and public but when he was around friends, it would show sadly.
jfc.... id iot.
@@GSU2004 Old gossip. Gads, some of you are desperate for attention.
I always thought the bradys was a modern family
