1966-67 Coast Guard Honor Guard, I did that many times and remember it like it was yesterday. What a privilege and honor. Uniform has changed but the job remains the same.

I am active duty Naval Home Guard in Denmark with just over 40 years of service in my backpack at present. We were once visited by officers from the US armed forces and National Guard on our ship and showed them what we did and told them about our duties and the rigorous training we receive etc etc. They visited us because the US and Denmark has an exchange program where troops from the National Guard comes over here and receive training from the Danish Home Guard prior to posting outside USA and we have received training as US instructors to make that training easier for them when preparing them for that future duty. They were obviously very impressed that we would go out in all conditions and do Search and Rescue, environmental, Patrol, keeping up sovereignty, escorting foreign military vessels and aiding police and civil defense, and are always on sharp duty as opposed to drilling and training since we never know if a SAR or environmental will happen. They were even more surprised to learn that we do this without pay and will dash to the ship in an emergency in the middle of our everyday civilian work. When they left, they turned at the foot of the landing bridge and saluted us in an impeccable show of honor and respect. So yes. You do show respect and honor to others. And we felt very honored that high ranking US officers would salute and honor our work and dedication.

Arlington is one of the greatest places in virginia, ive only been to D.C once but im glad we stopped in arlington for the changing of the guard. Everyone should go. Im from virginia and i wish i could see it more. Truely an unforgettable atmosphere.
When my father (USCG '46-'49) passed away, on 1/10/2018, two men representing the USCG honor guard, out of Buffalo NY, drove 4 hours, through A non stop snow storm, to honor him with a a 21 gun salute, to say a few very kind words and present the flag to our family! . I was lucky enough to catch up to one and just say, "My dad would have been so happy that your were here, he just loved the Coast Guard!" :-)

I was a proud member of the US Coast Guard Band around 1974-75. We trained in the same barracks with the Color Gaurd and the Honor Gaurd - "Oscar" Company. The amount of training and disciple involved is unimaginable to the average person. Those are real rifles, M1 carbines, 14 pounds with fixed bayonets. Those white gloves are cotton, very slippery handling the heavy rifles. One day in training an honor guardsman had his rifle with bayonet slip through his hand and cut it wide open. This stuff is not childs play.
Always get a lump watching the Honor Guards. I was in The Old Guard in 1972 (Charlie Guard). We did a Battalion full-honor arrival for General of the Army Omar Bradley at the Pentagon. Spaced out across the steps somewhat like this but at double-interval, we were at Present Arms as the General made his way up. He was about 80 then and a little slow, so he stopped along the way to speak to some of us. Suddenly he stopped in front of me and spoke; I responded and he moved on. Later after we withdrew, guys asked me what he said. But I didn't know - those 5 stars on each shoulder in a little pentagon shape had me dumbfounded. The guys beside me didn't hear it either, but said I answered "Yes Sir" so at least I didn't embarrass myself too bad. Just hope it fit the question!!
I was a member of the US Coast Guard Honor Guard, 1963 to 64. Had the honor of participating in President Kennedy's funeral cortege and grave side cereimonies.

As a member of the Army Honor Guard way back when, I participated in a few of these wreath laying ceremonies at the Tomb. They're impressive. It also takes a bit of skill to march up and down those marble stairs, especially when they're wet. The Honor Guards did a good job.
This is the most imposing ceremony in the world. The Americans honour the tomb of the unknown soldier in such a heartfelt dignified tribute that words cannot describe it.

As a former sailor with the United States Navy who descends from a large military family, and now that I work directly with the Japanese government, this is huge. In the eyes of Japan, this is the ultimate form of honorable respect. Given our wartime past, this is truly a historic moment, and I am not sure why it did not receive more media coverage.
In 2008 my father was laid to rest in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. He served in the Navy at the end of WWII and got stationed in Germany. The Naval Honor Guard made me proud of his service and gave him a good bye fit for a king. I can still hear taps and the 21 gun salute to this day and value the empty bullet i received from them. At his graveside service looking at the headstone of all who went before him, i was equally brought to tears looking at my 2 oldest sons and daughter in law, Army, National Guard and Marine and prayed that all would return safety from Iraq and Afghanistan if theirs units deployed again. I thank God he sent my daddy as their guardian angel.
US - Japan relations run deep. I will never forget seeing the beautiful Cherry Blossoms in Washington D.C donated by Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City. Our great friends from across our western pond. 😊
Despite the horrific losses in life and property, one good thing to emerge from WW2 was to have Japan and US allied to the US. One could not ask for a more powerful alliance in history.

At 01:40, is the area to the right and also the area further away (both grass areas) an area where the public can walk ? Or is it an area reserved for military use and assembly ? I've watched the changing of the guard cememonies from the stands some years back, but I'm not sure what that section is. I notice the Prime Minister also walked in from that section; I thought the dignitaries always came down the steps from the amphitheater.
OS1(SW/AW) USN Retired here. Spent 4 months in Japan in 1986 while deployed on USS Cape Cod AD 43. Have visited Arlington National Cemetery many times while stationed in Norfolk/Virginia Beach from 1989-2003.
I can only hope someday we will see our present day enemies sharing a similar ceremony with us at these hallowed grounds. Right now, it seems highly unlikely but 80-some years ago we would have thought a scene like this would have been highly unlikely too. Semper Fi.

Arlington is one of the greatest places in virginia, ive only been to D.C once but im glad we stopped in arlington for the changing of the guard. Everyone should go. Im from virginia and i wish i could see it more. Truely an unforgettable atmosphere.
When my father (USCG '46-'49) passed away, on 1/10/2018, two men representing the USCG honor guard, out of Buffalo NY, drove 4 hours, through A non stop snow storm, to honor him with a a 21 gun salute, to say a few very kind words and present the flag to our family! . I was lucky enough to catch up to one and just say, "My dad would have been so happy that your were here, he just loved the Coast Guard!" :-)

As a US military veteran of the US Air Force and Army, I watch these ceremonies with a solemn pride. What an honor it was to be a small part in such a magnificent military. Our valiant fallen comrades in arms hold the highest place of honor second only to God.

What a beautiful ceremony
I was in the Old Guard 3rd U.S. infantry Delta Company from 1980-1984 and then again in 1987-1989. Did many of the Tomb ceremonies along with funerals and White house ceremonies. This brings back memories

I have a question on the honor guard carrying the Japanese flag. I saw them both carrying it at right shoulder arms, whereas I thought weapons were always carried outboard of the flags. Can you clarify? Appreciate any answers. Thank you.

I was a proud member of the US Coast Guard Band around 1974-75. We trained in the same barracks with the Color Gaurd and the Honor Gaurd - "Oscar" Company. The amount of training and disciple involved is unimaginable to the average person. Those are real rifles, M1 carbines, 14 pounds with fixed bayonets. Those white gloves are cotton, very slippery handling the heavy rifles. One day in training an honor guardsman had his rifle with bayonet slip through his hand and cut it wide open. This stuff is not childs play.
Always get a lump watching the Honor Guards. I was in The Old Guard in 1972 (Charlie Guard). We did a Battalion full-honor arrival for General of the Army Omar Bradley at the Pentagon. Spaced out across the steps somewhat like this but at double-interval, we were at Present Arms as the General made his way up. He was about 80 then and a little slow, so he stopped along the way to speak to some of us. Suddenly he stopped in front of me and spoke; I responded and he moved on. Later after we withdrew, guys asked me what he said. But I didn't know - those 5 stars on each shoulder in a little pentagon shape had me dumbfounded. The guys beside me didn't hear it either, but said I answered "Yes Sir" so at least I didn't embarrass myself too bad. Just hope it fit the question!!

I was a member of the US Coast Guard Honor Guard, 1963 to 64. Had the honor of participating in President Kennedy's funeral cortege and grave side cereimonies.

As a member of the Army Honor Guard way back when, I participated in a few of these wreath laying ceremonies at the Tomb. They're impressive. It also takes a bit of skill to march up and down those marble stairs, especially when they're wet. The Honor Guards did a good job.

This is the most imposing ceremony in the world. The Americans honour the tomb of the unknown soldier in such a heartfelt dignified tribute that words cannot describe it.
Can't wait to see the 6th Branch Space Force's Honor Guard be part of this beautiful ceremony to make an even 6.

Ninety Nine percent of movements are the SAME between the branches!!! So why, @skianddie...would the Space Force be a "hot mess??". You have NO clue about honor guard requirements, procedures, or the discipline it takes!! I GUARANTEE that the United States Space Force will be just as good as the others, with the proper practice and training!! As a former sailor with the United States Navy who descends from a large military family, and now that I work directly with the Japanese government, this is huge. In the eyes of Japan, this is the ultimate form of honorable respect. Given our wartime past, this is truly a historic moment, and I am not sure why it did not receive more media coverage.
As an Proud Combat Veterab from the frst Gulf War and a National Guard who serve 4 weeksa Ground Zero; I am so Honored to see this video in Dec '24.
In 2008 my father was laid to rest in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. He served in the Navy at the end of WWII and got stationed in Germany. The Naval Honor Guard made me proud of his service and gave him a good bye fit for a king. I can still hear taps and the 21 gun salute to this day and value the empty bullet i received from them. At his graveside service looking at the headstone of all who went before him, i was equally brought to tears looking at my 2 oldest sons and daughter in law, Army, National Guard and Marine and prayed that all would return safety from Iraq and Afghanistan if theirs units deployed again. I thank God he sent my daddy as their guardian angel.

Despite the horrific losses in life and property, one good thing to emerge from WW2 was to have Japan and US allied to the US. One could not ask for a more powerful alliance in history.

At 01:40, is the area to the right and also the area further away (both grass areas) an area where the public can walk ? Or is it an area reserved for military use and assembly ? I've watched the changing of the guard cememonies from the stands some years back, but I'm not sure what that section is.
I notice the Prime Minister also walked in from that section; I thought the dignitaries always came down the steps from the amphitheater.

OS1(SW/AW) USN Retired here. Spent 4 months in Japan in 1986 while deployed on USS Cape Cod AD 43. Have visited Arlington National Cemetery many times while stationed in Norfolk/Virginia Beach from 1989-2003.

As I watch this ceremony and see the battle ribbons on the flags, I can't help but imagine the souls of the dead watching quietly.
I can only hope someday we will see our present day enemies sharing a similar ceremony with us at these hallowed grounds. Right now, it seems highly unlikely but 80-some years ago we would have thought a scene like this would have been highly unlikely too. Semper Fi.
