The Rush discography is a very rich one. I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say about it. You can divide their career into 4 quarters to make a whole. Heck, you can even divide the Rush catalogue into 8 parts. I'm partial to the 2112, Kings, Hemispheres period but it's always good to see people enjoying different periods of their career. I like Genesis, particularly the Gabriel era and the Collins era up to the 1983 self-titled album. I feel like the set list is going to contain a good third of material from 83 onward and focus on the popular songs that I don't love. It's not going to be weighted enough in what I consider the GREAT stuff for me. Plus, Phil is going to be sitting in a chair for most of the show. Past their prime and will play it up for the 80s pop crowd.

My favorite newer album right now is Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) by Kali Uchis. I love the vibe of it and how there are so many interesting sounds on it. There is even a song that reminds me of Portishead. I find myself listening to it often.
It would be nice to see the Phil, Tony and Mike play in person for possibly the last and in my case only time, but after seeing The Musical Box and Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited band kick my ass I don’t have the need to hear the more pop era Genesis perform songs mostly drawn from the 80’s and 90’s like 3 or 4 keys lower. Squid! - The moment he opened his mouth I was thinking "Mark E. Smith is reborn"...Now, Fall made a lot of good music, PIL made some good albums, and of course we have a lot of Krautrock here again. All elements that make a good stew. While it is all "old sources" (I could list another handful right away), their plus is that they really make it their own and fill it up with a lot of energy - which makes it a really good album...at least 4 stars, this is one that may grow over the next months...
If you’re going there with Lady Gaga, then I would also suggest Sia, which might tough since she has a lot of stuff that she has given away to other artists.
All great, but all inferior to Rush. As much as I love Neil, covering his discography was the most unpleasant experience I’ve had on this channel so far. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic Oh man...In my universe Rush just sounds silly compared to Joni and Neil. Yes, Neil Young has made some absolute dreck. But his highs are about as high as you can get. Joni is a goddess. I don’t think a single member of Rush could even shine her shoes but that’s just me...I can’t stand Neil Peart and those terrible Ayn Rand lyrics. That being said...I’m looking forward to the Listography because Rush is my dad’s favorite band. Maybe I’ll give them another shot.
As a big fan of Genesis from their very first recordings right up to the 90's final recording, I have to say I'll pass on seeing them. This is a final cash grab. It's all very well and I don't mean to diss anyone who is stoked about it. Have fun, enjoy. I wish the band well and I hope they can deliver satisfying shows for all who attend.
The rock and roll hall of fame is a rather odd beast it seemed to start relatively art and influence based and over the years transformed to a more openly commerce based stance on music. I suppose it's not surprising I cant think of any awards type show that isn't driven by a huckster attitude, but then I don't believe most people care either. They can always take heart in that it's impossible to be worse than the brits.
@@TastesLikeMusic Wow. If it was a different album, I'd definitely say go with the original but all they did was improve the sound. Or is that a remaster? They're calling the 2013 version "remixed." What's the difference between a remaster and a remix Jason?
Remixing involves taking all of the original tracks on the tape and, well...remixing them. Meaning each individual instrument could potentially have different EQ, compression, relative volume, etc. Mastering takes finished mixes and applies more subtle EQ and compression across them. This is done to make sure there aren’t any major differences going from song to song, put a little finishing sparkle on the mixes, and prepares it for radio. Remastering is usually pretty subtle. A change to the loudness and EQ across the entire album is usually what you’ll notice while a remix could be extremely drastic, going even as far as subtracting entire instruments in some cases.-Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic Thanks Jason. I still don't understand why you would go with the original which has been heavily criticized for brickwalling, distortion, etc. I have read so many people claim the old mix is unlistenable, painful, etc. and I would hate to see the album downrated for that when there's a much better mix available. On the other hand, the OG is what everyone heard for over 10 years. But I'm going with the remix. That's what I listened to and I have no interest in going back and reviewing an inferior version of the album.

I've always thought the HOF was a dumb concept. It's not like sports where the guy with the best batting average gets in. I mean, how do you compare the Go-Gos with Rage Against the Machine?
I’m sure the perception you guys don’t like Genesis that much comes from ranking Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme way too low, since most fans consider those two in the top tier. I hope Joe isn’t crazy enough to put them lower than Duke. 😜
They’re all very close in my book. My ranking is highly unusual in other ways. So I don’t think it would be any better received by the Genesis public. - Joe
If YOU do not know who Gil Scott-Heron or Kraftwerk are, it does not mean they are insignificant or unknowns - go and do your homework before you make comments like that...
Don’t be obtuse, we both know he didn’t sell many records compared to pretty much everyone in the rock and roll hall of fame. I’m not talking about influence. I’m not talking about popularity among musicians. I’m talking record sales, aka popularity. Which is pretty much the only thing the rock hall cares about. - Joe
Kraftwerk's influence on other artists is very significant. They were game changers for many artists and set the templates for multiple genres. It doesn't take too much digging around to find articles on Kraftwerk's importance. Even easier is to listen to Autobahn, Radioactivity, Trans Europe Express, The Man-Machine and Computer World to hear how far ahead of the game they were in the 1970s. So many artists owe Kraftwerk for laying the groundwork for much of the music of the 80s and beyond. They sold a quite respectable amount of records in the US. To be so influential across genres their popularity amongst other musicians was, and still is, significant.
I've been a Genesis fan for 35 years. They're my favourite band. But I don't want to see this potentially final tour because, well, it's not Genesis. It's Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford accompanying a seated Gollum trying to sing songs he no longer has the voice to carry, while his son is on drums. If they had Chester Thompson on the drums and somehow could get Gabriel and Hackett to show up for a few dates, it would make up for Collins' age and health problems. But they won't. I love Phil as well. I just don't want to see him this way. This isn't the way I want to remember him.
I understand you. When The Cranberries and Dolores planned the 2017 tour for the album Something Else, I had a ticket to a concert in Europe, which was eventually suspended. I did not know how serious Dolores was, but in those years you could see that she was in really bad health as well as psychologically, it would have been a very sad memory to see Dolores like that.
great video, fellas 1. Rock and roll riddle: Who has less credibility, the Grammys or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Answer: Both the Grammys and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have ZERO credibility, both totally suck, both are deeply annoying and awful, and neither has really anything at all to do with rock and roll, good music, or anything good whatsoever. 2. Big Genesis fan and I am going first week in December to see them in Philadelphia. Never seen them before, lifelong fan, ticket price was reasonable enough. If they play anything at all from before the self-titled album, I will be very pleased. 3. Not really into new stuff. Can't get enough Squeeze and the Cars. 🤗🎶
The Smiths are eligible. Maybe their distaste for Morrissey or his right wing politics will hurt him. The Foos have one decent song every other year and should never be in, I don't think good deeds should help them. Is it just because Dave is so friendly and everywhere?
Dave’s everywhere, he’s already in for Nirvana. He’s well liked. The band is one of the few remaining big rock bands and they’re relatively well-liked critically. It’s probably a combination. - Joe
Once you start saying, "Genre X isn't rock n roll," it becomes super complicated. There are a lot of country, soul, funk, and pop artists in the HOF that I wouldn't classify as rock n roll either, but they're in there. The only genre people seem to want to argue about is hip-hop. It would be easier if it were called the Popular Music Hall of Fame, which is really what it is.
I didn't realise music had a colour....I just like good music I come across and I imagine everyone else on this channel has a similar way with music. Post your list without prejudging others. From what I've seen many different cultures are represented, despite the overwhelming pop, rock and prog leanings of many who have posted lists....it is dependent on the contributor and their own tastes....i will say that music from several cultures is prevalent in my own....but I don't choose my choices based on culture or colour....I base my choices on the music I love.
@@roxannewalsh I agree, they mix in a lot of influences but every song has a 'Squid-signature' to it. Very strong album, especially for a debut.
If you’re going there with Lady Gaga, then I would also suggest Sia, which might tough since she has a lot of stuff that she has given away to other artists.
Rush cannot be Canada's finest export when Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and The Kids in the Hall exist.

Are you including Cheek to Cheek and the Star is Born soundtrack?
No to both.
@@TastesLikeMusic how about the fame monster? separate, included with the 1st album or not at all?
Separate release, even though it has murky origins. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic thanks!

In regards to the Rush discography. Will you be judging both of the Vapor Trails mixes or no? I hear the quality difference is dramatic.
I'm assuming they are just going with the new improved mix like everyone else.
Always OG. -Jason
I remember buying a The Coral album in my student days....they are ok
I do not care about the Hall of Fame, but as a german, of course I like that they included Kraftwerk haha.
Beware - as Joe pointed out they go by record sales. So you may end up with Modern Talking instead of Can (my favourite Krautrock band).
@@roxannewalsh Haha Modern Talking...I didn't know they are known outside of Germany.
Hey Sir Eyeball - I actually didn't know you are German - i assumed English for some reason - nice to know!

Maybe you thought that because I include a lot of British and European bands in my AOTY lists.
Bonjour my dudes!
I've always thought the HOF was a dumb concept. It's not like sports where the guy with the best batting average gets in. I mean, how do you compare the Go-Gos with Rage Against the Machine?
There's a lot of snubs in the Baseball HOF too. Ask Lou Whitaker.
The most laughable thing is determining which bands and artists will be eligible and why
I didn’t say that. I said they weren’t popular in America. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Gil Scott-Heron was not popular in America? I hear your words and revise my history books.

If they had Chester Thompson on the drums and somehow could get Gabriel and Hackett to show up for a few dates, it would make up for Collins' age and
health problems.
@@Llucmajorer1 She looked a lot worse in the 90's. Anorexic and barely alive.

The rnr hall of fame is like the oscars. Meaningless pandering. Tina Turner ahead of Kate Bush? No way!
- Joe
RnRHoF has made their name irrelevant for Rock n Roll. It’s just another awards ceremony now. Foo Fighters is a RnR token induction. 🤮
Genesis is old. That’s all I say. Their latter music is mostly pop crap, in my book. 😎
Jay-Z has nothing to do with rock'n'roll. Absolutely nothing. That whole rock'n'roll HOF thing is one big scam
It’s the Rock and Rolling Stone Hall of Fame. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic I was going to say the exact same thing, Joe. Great minds . . .
