    Man! I miss my Jo-Han kits. I still have a few including my fav, the Chrysler Turbine car. A friend of mine gave it to me years ago, and I never built it because I didn't know how to mix the color for the body. Now, I know how to airbrush and I'm looking forward to building it someday.

    My local news agency had about 30 old jo-Han kits back in the 70s.I was doing a paper round with them and I told the boss I wanted them all.I had that 62 dodge as in the vid plus two later reboxes.The boss was happy to hold them for me cause he couldn’t move them.Everyone wanted Mustangs,55-6-7 Chevs,Corvettes and anything with a big motor in it.I sold a lot of papers

    I used to build models when I was a kid, late 60’s early 70’s, JO-HAN was my favorite. Recently went to a few local model car shows/swap meets, prices of
    JO-HAN kits went to the moon and the promo cars very expensive too, just like the real thing prices went nuts.

      They were working from factory blueprints supplied as part of the promo deal. If there are inaccuracies it's because OEMs made last-minute changes to things like emblems and what trim levels contained what equipment, after the promo model tooling dies were cut.

  • @cuda426hemi

    I'm 67....those promo kits were free for sure at least until I stopped being a kid mid 60s and the funny thing is those decals are EXACTLY what were on our bicycles and local hot rods - those flames are hilarious - the shape brings back all the memories, the skull was on my front fender, only one missing is "Mr.Horsepower" that cigar chompin' angry bird - everybody had that bad boy. I wouldn't even put a blowdryer near that celluloid stuff but I wonder if you could "train" it back to shape in or with hot water? Too bad the late 50's Jo Hans don't RUST over the first couple years like the '57 Mopars did in real life within ONE year! We had a '57 Custom Suburban Plymouth with the bumper wings - sort of the wagon Christine and that was rusting on top fenders after ONE Chicago winter. These are good little time machines for we boomer boys. I often wonder who exactly throws the many many friction motor promos and the many models I had over the years away - I certainly didn't chuck 'em!! Hmmmm 🚗

    I love the old Johan kits and promos, X-EL Products used to deal with a lot of the Johan kits and promos, great company! The last time I had gotten anything from them was in 1997 , and it wasn’t too much longer after that they closed down or something, what a shame too! X-EL was in Romeo, Michigan, they were a division of SeVille enterprises, well at least they were in 1992, but their location stayed the same. Anyways, very cool stuff Andy!

    Funny, I worked on a Cessna twin for a couple of guys out at Scottsdale air park in the 90s. One of the owners of the airplane had a bunch of the promos, in the boxes, if I remember right. He had some of the molds, too, and I did a little work for him part time at an industrial park in Tempe setting up a shop to use those molds. Haven’t thought about that in years. I wonder what ever happened with that situation, whether he ever got that up and running. You’re dredging up memories you couldn’t have imagined, Andy.
    Anyone watching in the Phoenix area know of any Jo Han kit molding ever going on around there?

    Three different versions from 1 box. I feel like from most manufacturers nowadays there would be 3 different versions in 3 different boxes. For example the recent Takom M60 video, first an M60, then an M60 with ERA and now an M60 with ERA and a bulldozer blade.

I'm also very knowledgeable on the vintage kits , I started building them in 1963 . One last thing , I've had real good luck getting the war page out of the acetate plastic , I take them apart and boil water , boiling the plastic will make them soft and they can be shaped back to original , for the most part .

    • @markfergerson2145
      @markfergerson2145 3 роки тому +1

      Cellulose acetate and nitrate were early plastics that were very cheap to mass-produce consumer items from. Everything from movie film to billiard balls to guitar picks and decorative moldings were made from them. They were however not as durable as other plastics like polystyrene (and slowly outgassed nitric acid and vinegar-ish fumes!) so styrene started taking over in roughly the early 50s for a lot of items.
