I am 65. I started building model cars/trucks around age 12. My dad was in the military so I would save up and get a model now and then from the BX. I think they were maybe a buck or two back then with no sales tax. When my dad finally retired to Mesa Az we had a place called Webster's hobby shop. This is late to early 70's. I started buying my models from them plus K-mart. Today I have every model I ever built including one's my mother destroyed over the years in boxes. They are all displayed on shelves in my shop. All 200 plus of them. Last year my model building buddy John I lost track of 30 years prior passed away. I went to his service, His family wanted me to have all his models many I gave him as gifts. He like me had never stopped building and had collected over 200 built models some I gave him when we were kids in the 70's. I also have close to 150 unbuilt NIB models. You never loose the knack. Just the eye sight. Ever since a detached left retina it has slowed my model building down but with magnification I am back at it. Not to the level I once was but close. Seeing he models have made me realize I have many of them built and unbuilt. Guess I need to get at it and build some more. Where is your store located? Thanks
I just turned 67. I started building models back in the late 50's and early 60's. Watching these videos really provide me with a trip back in time. I am glad that I found your pages.
That 49 kit was one of three,, 48 49 and 50 mercs, all fit the same options as far as original or stunt rally, they included ramps tools and lota custom parts, to have all three would be the holy grail, and you probably have them in that collection
The monogram 66 Chevelle ss, with the big block/tunnel ram/ straight axle front....i loved that kit. Built 2 of them. Still have a set of the wheels, tunnel ram and carbs, hood scoop and front end. And those classy 427 valve covers. Slick!
Great finds! I have been building models since the late 1950's and my first model was an SMP Pontiac Bonneville. SMP - Scale Model Products, eventually was folded into AMT - Aluminum Model Toys. Check youtube posts on the history. The ads on the box bottoms seemed like only to be used a few years. They were meant to "cross-sell" other items by the manufacturer. I can imagine somebody at the company saying, "Hey, we can use that space to sell more stuff. I can also see someone else saying, "That costs money, stop it!" Those boxes are practically a history of model car kits almost from the beginning. Oh yeah, that 1961 AMT kit would have a side view drawing of model type on a sticker that sealed the box on one or both ends . They eventually wear/fall off if handled enough. Face it, 65 years of handling and storage takes its toll on boxes!
I've been building since 1958 over 60 years . Recently I had between 450 and 500 model kits stolen some built , makes me want to cry , started hoarding in the mid 1970s HEHEHE LOL .
Andy..... as I and many others who are drooling over this incredible lot of kits and after market gems that your excitement and joy.... you can't contain...., maybe a sweepstakes with one of those many boxes and accessories as a prize!.....with an entry $$ can help to start your museum! ... And one of us out here can live the absolute joy of your Wonderful find too...... Just a thought ......what day you 😊
@Randall Johnson Hey Randel.....pissin' all over a suggested way Andy's hobbies could've shared his fortune....maybe aquire some assets for a "museum" No worries...See I believe he will understand my thoughts. As for your poor outlook.....may you find something to help you through your "it can't be done, and it's so hard to have a positive outlook on my day" attitude. May you pause...be grateful...smile..and say hello to people you pass on your life journey. 🏄 🎶✌
I’m a builder myself, I don’t buy to just stack them in the shelf. That being said. I have a few older models, like the 3 in 1’s that I’m not sure I’m building yet. I’ve also bought kits that I plan to build but were on sale so I bought them early. I’ve also bought several of 1 type so build a box stock and to customize. So I have quite a few but they’re all to be built. Wether I get to them while I’m still physically able to build them, is another story. I also open my diecast😜
This channel popped up recently for me. Have not built a kit in decades, but still have most of my old stuff sitting around. Got into the full size restorations instead, but should have stuck with kits for the cost and storage issues of the big ones! Thanks for the cool memories, guys...
Although I commented in part one of this video I remember seeing so many of those car kits in the local Woolworths where I bought my models. I was building plastic models from the late 50's right up through the mid 70's ending with the Tamiya tank kits I didn't build too many car kits, but when I did it was generally Monogram while my brother preferred Revell. When you brought out those AMT accessory packs I remember seeing those in some of the larger hobby shops back in the late 60's. Really good video's brought back a lot of great memories.
I used to work in a hobby shop in Aberdeen, SD and I was in charge of ordering models. This was back in early 2000s. I remember Tom Daniel's kits were a very popular series.
I've never been into collecting kits. I've got about 30 stored away now but if I ran across a collection like this or even just a small slice of it I'd be all in. What a fantastic find!
I remember having that '56 Chevy kit, and the '50 Ford convertible. I still have the great '57 Chevy Recall lot with the yellow box art. That was such a great kit for us as it had opening doors, hood and trunk. Then later Revell brought out the '56, and '55 kits. Then AMT had The light blue '58 Chevy with opening doors and those great spongy tires! Boy, you guys brought back some great memories! Thank you again.
I remember getting that book. it came out when I was 10. I was 11 or 12 when I got it as I was just beginning my love for modeling. I SO need to find the space to start building again. If I ever get a place large enough. I Loved My "Snake and Mongoose" kit. I always wanted the top fuel versions to finish the set. But I couldn't find them in the early/mid 1970's. Then I got into Military kits. I used to bug my local shop to get any outdated Verlinden catalogues as they were the new hot thing. Thanks for the trip down memory Lane guys
@@Frank18512 collectors and hoarders are bad. I am a builder. Just like collectors of real cars. If I had a real javelin, or roadrunner for example, I would drive and enjoy every day. From box #2, I think I remember building the Joey Chitwood kit around 1974. The ramps did it for me. It was the first time I had ever had my pupils dilated, I I remember trying to count the number of bricks I needed to stack with eyes that refused to focus. Building the car was out of the question, but I could count bricks, sort of.
Andy! My congratulations! This collection is amazing! Looks like trade leftovers, many repeating kits. However, this is a real treasure. Please, think about founding of scale model museum, real or virtual. You have to keep this legacy. This is ready museum collection. Looking forward for new unboxing series! Thank you!
Only crappy thing about vintage plastic models in AZ is some models take no effort to snap if it was left in a hot shed or attic. Amazing and nostalgic collection.
I remember building a lot of the AMT '49 Ford models as a kid in the early 1960's and having the Black and later Gray ones which we just loved as from the Robert Mitchum movie "Thunder Road". Then of course getting the '57 Ford and the '49 Mercury models too, as they were featured in the movie. Great video which brings back some great memories. Thank you.
Love these two videos on your collection!! Love the Sox and Martin kits , the super birds and the very old kits Have you ever seen a 1970-71 gto kit? The 1972 is not the same. I’m looking for a 3-1 kit to complete the model kits I had when I was young. Thanks I really really enjoyed this unboxing!!
Hey guys, many thanx. This whole thing is unreal. Oh, @ 19:45 ish. The Torino box. The Jo-hann Torino's also came under the AMT boxing's. 🤔, Maybe the other way around. Super deal!!
That is so cool, that brought back many memories from when i was a kid, seen so many kits that i built back then, and oh so many kits that i would love to get my hands on and build, i was just pictureing some of those kits with some of the detail part kits
Oh man...I'M THAT GUY! I've got way too many kits in storage. I'm in my mid 60's and have been building and collecting models since the late '60's. Out of everything you've shown my favorite is the old AMT 1957 Chevrolet hardtop. You could chop the top (if you had the guts) and customize it to within an inch of it's life. And if all the various custom versions weren't enough, the drag racer build was over the top. Even the stock version was well detailed. I'm more of a hot rod, custom car, and old nostalgia drag car type person. Man, I've got to build, sell or eat some of my stuff. Don't want a postmortem video of someone going through my collection. Thanks for sharing! Have fun.
Andy That’s a walk down memory lane That’s so cool the classic autos !!! Any odd balls like Munster drag racers !!!?? Or Dracula? Rommels Rods?! Truly a great video Andy Thank you love those classics!!!
Any idea what the 66 Malibu flip nose with flames would sell for? When I was 18 and moved out of my parents house, I went back about a month later for my models and my dad thru all of them out, that Malibu was my favorite, the green 56 Chevy with opening doors was another one I would like too. Awesome video guys, wish they were an hour long or more. Let me at em 👍👍✨ I also have the 71 Satellite in the thumbnail picture in my stash, I used to drive one but my ex had an accident in it, good thing all that metal helped keep her safe.
Will we be seeing some of these kits on ebay? The '68 Firebird 400 I built that kit something like 30 years ago..would like to build it again and detail the heck out of it.
I have 4 AMT vintage kits that are molded in gray...2-40 Fords, 1-49 Ford, and 1- 50 mercury. All built when I got them but just great kits. I also have a huge box of parts that are all AMT and molded in gray. At least 1/2 dozen different makes of cars.
How about some info on the person that you purchased these from? I was lucky enough to buy all of the models from an aging modeler. I filled up my S10 bed..all the way and the passenger seat and floor board and still had to make 2 trips! It had alot of planes and cars and different models mostly from the 80s some 60s and 70s and alot of the price tags were from closed down stores like Toys By Roy which I remember seeing at the mall but I would never even ask to go in because my mom would say NO.
Very nice collection of kits, parts and builders dreams. Having bought my first kit n 68, I have never really stopped buying building and collecting. I have a massive collection that is about 10 times larger that im looking to start downsizing. Andy I also once had the vision of a model car museum. Both built ups and unbuilt kits,I would live to get n touch with u as the history of the hobby needs to stay alive as well as knowledge of what's what. Im n nor cal if ur interested n a 50 collection, please post ur contact info ok. Will check n from time to time. For the years and $ I've put into my collection it would b nearly impossible to do again,so I prefer to keep it together and one can literally show each yr make and model of almost every car ever kitted. Thnx again. Doug
Oooh I’m drooling over that ‘66 Charger… All those Javelins are open because the guy wanted to see if he had an original ‘71 / ‘72 with the T-roof or the later more common flat roof version.
Lovin' the passion in all this. I built a few custom cars in the 70s but being based in the UK was mainly into Airfix cars and Tamiya. However having loved US muscle cars then classic from 50s and 60s I was able to get into the kits in the past 5-6 years, esp with the re-issues. I am glad I wasnt into them back in the day as the nostalgia pain here would be killing me. I even love the Monogram cars from the 20s eg the Cords and Doosies. 😍 I can also totally relate to the 'completist' mentally of this collector as having no money when I was building back in the day, I have been buying complete sets where I can. I really think the majority of these kits need to go on display as a memory to the collector as I am sure he would love to share his passion and the care he took for all those years.
I've got the 4 door 56 Olds with the green windows . Bought it as a 3 along with the 56 Desoto and 56 Plymouth. Had to buy clear glass and interiors for them from Modelhaus. Except the Olds as he didn't do the windows for that.
I believe the X-EL promo reissues started in the 1970s and were produced until about 2000. An improvement over the original JoHan promos, as the X-EL models were non-warping styrene rather than warp-prone acetate.
I still haven’t seen my favorite kit… the MPC Indy Turbine Racer… the original with the body made of curves, and more curves… not the subsequent ones with flat sheets and sharp angles… I had one, and Little Brothers broke it up before it was finished…. (Yeah, lots of you can relate to Little Brothers… like the time they decided to see if any of my plane kits would “fly” down the stairs…)
I was the little brother, youngest of five. So I had four collections to play with! Always had to camouflage the broken parts and that usually didn’t work well. But I appreciate playing with the collections
Anything 65 oldsmobile stuff? detail items, parts, etc... no whole kits needed. Looking for everything under the hood Also looking for the chevelle wagon chassis and interior pieces Also looking for a set of john deere chad little #97 decals Which of the 3rd gen camaro kit had actual taillights and not just decals for taillights? I built the later issue 66 malibu flip nose kit Im also searching for a 97ish amt corvette gs kit that was molded in blue and i know you had to glue the flares on the body... help to track what particular kit that would be would be awesome.
I had that '66 Malibu SS in the original Monogram. I remember the flame decals. Don't know what happened to it, maybe it's still in a box out in storage.
Thanks for the shout-out guys. SMP (Scale Model Products) was created by AMT so they could do business with General Motors (and others) without damaging their relationship with Ford. I can post a link here but will not do that without you consent. Cheers and MODEL ON! Max
My question is, my grandfather left me a whole box of old antique model, cars and? And? And over the years they have came apart. Will it hurt the back together? Are it best to leave them in pieces? All the parts are there
Yes I remember those and I need parts for some of those do either of you gentlemen know where I can get parts for I'll have to dig them out three positive but they are larger-scale snake and mongoose I need to know how to figure what scale maybe I can do a video but I need this straight axle front end and tires I want to try and restore them
Do I remember any of those kits? 90 per cent of them! Two that stick out that I built are the Toronado and the Pontiac Club Dr Mer from your other video. I was always a sucker for "futuristic" or otherwise unusual cars. Um, are all of those boxes "just" car kits or are there other subjects?
Excel products was a mail order only way to buy reissues of the older Johan promos made in styrene plastic. Johan model cars would come with an order sheet for the XL products vehicles
You guys are both doing great work with your video channels. Pardon me now, The TARBIS is telling me the models are not going to build themselves so back to the styrene mines!
@@maxsmodelsmy grandfather has a pretty large collection that he is trying to sell. Idk where to start about finding a buyer? Please let me know if any leads or places to look. He’s located in Robinson, IL. Thanks in advance!
One thing I found out about original issue, over re-issue, is details. Or the lack of it after a molds been used for decades. I'm a fan of the AMT 51 Chev Fleetline. Dunno why. But generally, Its awesome imo. Your mileage may vary. Or so I thought. Happened to win one on the Eb in a lot. Didn't think much of it, other than the box art was different. When I eventually opened it. Phwoah! Instead of the side trim being almost unintelligible. I mean the 2000s release could've had "Defluxed" without the L on its side for all I knew. The original trim read DELUXE in bold script. Wasn't just that that had me amazed. molded in wiring was bold. Seat texture was crisp. Now, if I can grab an original kit over a re-issue. I'll snag that sucker quicker than beer on a hot day. TLDR: I like em old. lol
Hello again after further review, the particular jo-han kit I asked about isn't on this video. Sorry, I may have saw it on another of your videos. Mike
The JoHan ‘72 Torino “stockcar” has one of the best Stock bodies actually . It has all the trim and emblems ( that you would normally remove to make a racecar ) . Funny thing is that one of JoHans last Ford Promos was the ‘72 Torino . It was a curb side , had great detail with the trim and emblems and had the GT hood scoop ( which was an option on Torino and Ranchero for ‘72&73 ) . While the “stockcar” kit has an opening hood , it’s a flat plain ( no scoop ) hood . I’m sure using the newer Revell Starsky Torino as a donor , that ‘72 JoHan Torino can be a nice factory stock car .
AMT was instructed by Ford that they did not want their cars associated with other vehicles of the same year. AMT solution was to start a company called SMP . That's why Ford products between 1958 and 1962 were sold under the AMT logo. Other vehicles like Chevrolets and Chryslers were usually tagged SMP

It had alot of planes and cars and different models mostly from the 80s some 60s and 70s and alot of the price tags were from closed down stores like Toys By Roy which I remember seeing at the mall but I would never even ask to go in because my mom would say NO.
Man
All those parts
I enjoy custom building and go through alot of parts
Unbelievablely Awesome !!! God Bless All.
Never in my life did I think that I would hear Andy say “Electric Boogaloo”, however, I am not sad about it!
I grew up in the eighties and it popped up on my mind lol
Lol. I had a double take myself. Definitely brought up the 80s, lol....

Thnx again. Doug
Oooh I’m drooling over that ‘66 Charger…
All those Javelins are open because the guy wanted to see if he had an original ‘71 / ‘72 with the T-roof or the later more common flat roof version.
Good comment 👍
$0.69 in 1970 is equivalent to $4.91 in 2020 according to the BLS inflation calculator.
All of that is great
One of my favourites from my memories was the cool Revell F150 SVT Ford pick up! Not seen that one yet.
SMP was a companion company that the Ford-centric AMT, started to land non-Ford promo and kit subjects.
I've got the 4 door 56 Olds with the green windows . Bought it as a 3 along with the 56 Desoto and 56 Plymouth. Had to buy clear glass and interiors for them from Modelhaus. Except the Olds as he didn't do the windows for that.
Max's Models...great view of many companies. Great research.
amazing collection...wow
Love Z28 BLACK CAMERO IN LAST BOX NICE MONOGRAM KIT
Absolutely Awesome!
I believe the X-EL promo reissues started in the 1970s and were produced until about 2000. An improvement over the original JoHan promos, as the X-EL models were non-warping styrene rather than warp-prone acetate.
I still haven’t seen my favorite kit… the MPC Indy Turbine Racer… the original with the body made of curves, and more curves… not the subsequent ones with flat sheets and sharp angles…
I had one, and Little Brothers broke it up before it was finished…. (Yeah, lots of you can relate to Little Brothers… like the time they decided to see if any of my plane kits would “fly” down the stairs…)
I had a niece "fly" one of my planes 😢😂
I was the little brother, youngest of five. So I had four collections to play with! Always had to camouflage the broken parts and that usually didn’t work well. But I appreciate playing with the collections
Anything 65 oldsmobile stuff? detail items, parts, etc... no whole kits needed. Looking for everything under the hood
Also looking for the chevelle wagon chassis and interior pieces
Also looking for a set of john deere chad little #97 decals
Which of the 3rd gen camaro kit had actual taillights and not just decals for taillights?
I built the later issue 66 malibu flip nose kit
Im also searching for a 97ish amt corvette gs kit that was molded in blue and i know you had to glue the flares on the body... help to track what particular kit that would be would be awesome.
Max
I ran across a celluloid promo at a flea market I didnt know about the sag and thought they kept it on the fire place or near a heater
I want that Mongoose and Snake kit!!
SMP - Scale Model Products! Come on guys! And yes, this is Jesse from San Diego! Hi Andy!
If SMP was before AMT how do you explain the 59 Ford by AMT and the couple others?
Wow cool i built many of those kits!
Excel products was a mail order only way to buy reissues of the older Johan promos made in styrene plastic. Johan model cars would come with an order sheet for the XL products vehicles
I never thought I was a jealous person....until now !!
i am interested in one of the jo-han amc javelins
Alot of boxs back in the day from amt for those modifies had ad on the backs
You guys are both doing great work with your video channels. Pardon me now, The TARBIS is telling me the models are not going to build themselves so back to the styrene mines!
You too I watch your channel all the time, and love it.
@@AndysHobbyHeadquarters thanks
@@maxsmodelsmy grandfather has a pretty large collection that he is trying to sell. Idk where to start about finding a buyer? Please let me know if any leads or places to look. He’s located in Robinson, IL. Thanks in advance!
I'm pretty sure that I have that Monogram 87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe somewhere...and a Mercury Cougar XR7 to go with.
You guys are Awesome!!!!!
You guys are cool. Thanks!
Have you come across any ‘70 Pontiac Grand Prix kits yet?
TLDR: I like em old. lol
omg...rare kits. will u b selling
I really like all of the old and I like you and your videos! but I cant watch when you have that redo on
Hello again after further review, the particular jo-han kit I asked about isn't on this video. Sorry, I may have saw it on another of your videos. Mike
Electric Boogaloo 😂. I wonder how many viewers remember that old movie?
Where can I get a vintage kit like those ? Are any of them for sale?
All Memories of good old day build models , kits
Sweet!
