I appreciate this video. I just came from a model show and found a resin body that was painted the same color as yours. It's a 1958 Chevy wagon. I am unclear on who originally cast it but it is cool and I do not want to ruin it while removing the old paint. Keep your fingers crossed as it's headed for the purple pond!
Take it easy. Only give it an hour and see what happens.
I love your builds. I have been building models for almost 40 years. I just recently tried using super clean on an 87 GNX body that I painted many years ago using Tamia sprays and yes I painted it black respectively but the super clean didn't really do much with the Lacquer based primer,base and clear even after 48 hrs. I usually use Testors ELO and that stuff works amazing but I was out. So I am currently trying Brake fluid in my dipping tub and it is working good with some gentle agitation with a medium toothbrush.

I have good luck using DOT3 brake fluid .

@@johncater7861 I use rubber gloves safety glasses and a toothbrush. After it soaks overnight I scrub with a toothbrush to get the paint out of the crevices . I have a tupperware tub that I soak the bodies in and afterwards I cap off the tub and reuse the fluid. Save the bottles the fluid came in so when the fluid stops working due to being contaminated pour the fluid back into the containers and take to the nearest auto mechanic shop for disposal.

I used super clean on a wall once to remove grease on a wall. It started to pull off the paint.

Thanks for this video. I was not happy with my paint work on a Tamiya Mustang GT4 that I painted with Scale Finishes paints (probably three coats). It then had three coats of pearl sprayed on top and finally cleared with their super clear. I was lazy and did not sand between coats so the poor paint job is totally my fault. Anyway, I wanted to start over and used the method in this video to strip the clear, pearl and paint off. It took almost five whole days with twice a day brushing using a firm tooth brush. But it did finally remove it all and I was left with a body that looked like it just came out of the box.
Good to hear! I'm glad this worked out for you. I have had to do that many times and I have had the best luck with this stuff.

Hi, thanks for sharing. Just wondered what You would use for acrylic paint as I'm new to medeling, but also have mild asthma so a less caustic medium would be best (& oufside of course)
Thanks. I think this still works on acrylic also. I have not really used acrylic myself. But I do have mild asthma issues and usually wear a regular mask when I spray a lot. I also have a real nice 3M respirator for when I shoot the real automotive clear coat. That stuff can mess you up. If your athsma is real sensitive this mask is worth the $40 I paid. Asthma is no fun.

I noticed a few times on your paint stripping videos you mention that you use the super clean to strip the chrome off, and say you'll rechrome it. How do you rechrome an otherwise unchromed part? Thanks as always Raoul, Richie
I was sending them to a platter. I was using Chrome Tech USA but he retired a few years ago. I haven’t used anyone else since but there are a few others. Little Motor Car company is one I think.
Super Clean is the best in my experience. I was always told to not spill brake fluid on a real car cause it would ruin paint and you would not be able to repaint it because it wouldn’t allow paint to stick, so didn’t make sense to use brake fluid on my model either.
I have used brake fluid and it does clean off and you can paint over it. It does soak into resin thou so a good degreaser wash after is a good idea. Brake fluid also seams to make plastic a bit more brittle but not really sure on that.
will this work on metal or just resin and plastic I guess?
It should be fine. It is a degreaser but depending on what it is painted with it may not strip it. But you can use stronger strippers on metal.

I don't know...I am using the same Super Clean, and have had a plastic model soaking for 2+ days with serious scrubbing, and maybe 30% of the Testors One Coat Lacquer has come off. Maybe I'll try using Isopropyl 91% after I wash it off. Thanks
Give that a try. If this doesn’t work then usually the 91% does. At least for me.
Thanks - after 3 days soaking in the Purple, and light scrubbing with a toothbrush for several hours, today I washed it off and let it dry. I got a heavy duty brush for better scrubbing, and used IPA 91% on a small area...it seems to be removing the lacquer better than the Purole. I'll soak it overnight in the IPA and brush it off tomorrow. PS - I've ordered 2 bottles of the ELO. Makes sense that Restore will remove their own lacquer better than anything else.

What about using tamiya laquer thinner to remove a paint job? Do you think it would hurt plastic?
Yes! Don't do it.
That's the problem with resin. There is no "standard" resin that everyone uses so it's a crap shoot as to what you will get and some of them are more susceptible to chemicals than others.

Yes. That is why I won't leave them in for long. Had a Modelhaus body that I stripped and it had some areas that the resin was coming off. Turns out they were bubbles in the resin that Modelhaus filled with resin to make them perfect!
I had to hunt that Super Clean down. One Walmart didn't have it, another did. I wanted to try this as brake fluid and heavy duty cleaners weren't working. They would work on the hand painted stuff, but not a red paint on a half built Corvette I had. I've got it soaking in it right now. I also wanted to pick up some 90% alcohol, but IF you can find alcohol, it's only 70%.
Hope it works for you. Around me I can only find 90% alcohol at CVS pharmacy and Walgreens pharmacy. Bigger stores only have 70%.

Good video Raoul, I usually paint with acrylic based paints and I use Totally Awesome as my stripper, but, I have always wanted to try the Super Clean. Up here in Canada, we pay $20 for that size of container of Super Clean. Cheers

I just begun to follow you and have a question. How do I keep Bare Metal in place after I trim it out? I’m new to this product and can’t figure it out. Thanks for your hep.
I'm having that problem too. Make sure the surface is smooth and clean. Fingerprints and any oils. That helps. The last few that I have bought don't stick as well and are a little thicker and harder to cut with a razor. The older sheets seem to work better. They claim they have not changed anything but I don't think that is true. I've seen many other complaints for the same issues.

I used the 91% alcohol on my 59 caddy and it wouldn't take it off smh all it was was primer? Why do you think it didn't work?
I only left it for a day or so to soak should I have left it longer?

That's a good looking gold on that Vet do you remember the color? Or who made that body?
Thanks! That was the color it arrived to me in and was 30 years old. It had lots of lacquer cracking, so I had to strip it. I custom painted it to a very similar color. I painted it with a Gold base, Sprayed a candy yellow (Tamiya Clear Yellow) then did the black strips and then clear coat.

For stripping chrome how does it do on the yellow adhesive from the factory?I usually use Easy Off gel it works really well but other times not so good.I was told the age of the kits chrome has alot to do with it.
I see the same thing with this stuff. Older chrome does not seem to have the yellow undercoating. It has trouble stripping the chrome on the newer Revell stuff. Chrome coat no problem but that yellow... Sometimes it will take it off and other times it will not.

Tried the oven cleaner once and didn't care for it. I used brake fluid for a while. It worked slower and seemed to dry out the plastic and make it more brittle. My first time I tried to strip a body I soaked it in lacquer thinner! That was a disaster and the body crumbled! Raoul.

You mentioned re-caroming. What method and product do you use for that. I’d love to see that in action!
I wish I could. I have been using Chrome Tech USA and sending them to him. He has retired so I will have to use someone else. I have been using him for years so I have many unfinished restorations that he has all ready done the chrome on and they are waiting for me to finish. That Olds 442 and a few others were done on the very last chrome order he did for me! Technically he was retired but since I was such a good customer he offered me one more chrome order so I sent him an order that these were on.

Stupid question. Do you or can you reuse the super clean.
Not a stupid question and yes you can. I leave it in the tub and keep a lid on it. The paint that comes off will settle to the bottom. After a few uses it will start to take longer to strip and have lots of settlement and a few times it has gotten cloudy. That is when I change it out for fresh super clean.

It works on most. Most vintage paints it will take off. Some lacquer it won’t but 91% isopropyl alcohol usually works on those. The modern Tamiya Synthetic Lacquer I have had a hard time stripping.
After about 6 or 10 body’s I strain the super clean and add fresh to it
I have done that too! Usually just change it out thou.

i tried it on a carbody that was painted with REAL automotive paint....never came off.
I use real automotive clear coat. This will not strip that stuff. Usually it will strip the paint below the clear eventually and the clear will lift. Takes some time.

model of paint, so an idea of the time and a look at the paint coming loose are two things I wondered about. Others who have

This dont strip all paints. Ive had models painted with real car paint and wouldnt budge after a week of soaking. My standby is dot 3 brake fluid. Soaked 24 hours or less and paint was gone.
I have used dot 3 brake fluid as well but find it can make the plastic more brittle. Have you experienced that?

You just need Easy Off, a Ziploc bag. Put plastic part inside, spray it, leave it overnight zipped. Next day, wear rubber globes and safety goggles, use and old toothbrush or poly fiber dish brush ($4) to remove paint, rinse it with water, done deal.
Easy off is $5 for a can and how many body’s can you strip per can? Plus it is more toxic than this stuff. Super clean is $8 a gallon and will strip many bodies and also dip my parts in it for a quick wash to clean off the mold release before paint.

Thanks. Easy off works and that is great if you already have it and only need to use it occasionally. I have a lot of restoration projects and have stripped many models and even used it again this weekend as I was not happy with a project and wanted to start over. I didn’t mean to come off snappy and if you took it that way I apologize. After I reread it I felt it may have been short.

using super clean to strip acrilyic paint on diecast cars is like throwing your money in the toilet
Doesn’t the cleaner react with the die cast metal! Works great on plastics though.

When I made this one I had a lot of people asking me about stripping models. So I did this to explain how I do it. I didn't film me dropping the body in the tub and once an hour pulling it out and wiping it with a tooth brush. Then putting it back in for another hour. Some really want to see that apparently and I may redo this video.

Its no longer made by Castrol, Not nearly as good as the original Castrol formula.
