I’d like to recommend The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980) for your movie channel. It wasn’t a big budget blockbuster film, but it is a funny, wonderful film I think you’d really enjoy.
Funny thing: one of the handful of movies I saw as a kid was Animals Are Beautiful People, which I understand is by the same producer as The Gods Must Be Crazy… so I probably should watch that one sometime!

I too was a voracious reader as a child, and I too read the dictionary, as well as the Encyclopedia Britannica volumes we had in the house, lol.

"The Sting". Scott Joplin wrote that classic tune (The Entertainer) right here in St. Louis. About 50 years later, Chuck Berry invented Rock & Roll here too. He and Tina Turner went to the same High School here. Looking forward to your movie reviews Amy! 👍
Marvin Hamlisch also won an Oscar for the song composition "The Entertainer" for "The Sting" movie. That instrumental song was played on the radio quite a lot too.
Amy, I now live in rural Iowa in Lamoni, surrounded by Amish, and have spent time living in the Amana Colonies near Iowa City.. I have also lived overseas and learned German, Persian, and Japanese.
I think we would have a lot in common. Good for you! Go where your heart calls you!
I am not a scholar in Amish stuff, but think I'd almost prefer that or Mennonite to some of life troubles.

Long time ago, but I visited the Amana colonies. and near my relatives in NW Missouri were many Mennonites. Much respect to them.
Before our weekly trip to the library, the dictionary was one of our 'go-to' books as well.

Interesting that you said you grew up partly in an Amish community. I've often tried to puzzle out your lack of exposure to modern music such as rock. Often I've thought back to my meeting of a highly traditional Mennonite unmarried 18 year old on a Mexican train long ago. She also lacked exposure to popular culture. I found that fascinating. We talked long into the night. I think we were both fascinated to meet representatives of such different cultures. Apart from that one meeting I've never met anyone quite like you, not the Mexicans that shared the train that night, not anyone at all. Glad you're so different.
Shawshank redemption and saving private ryan. And don’t forget the tissues
*THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION* is the best drama film made in my lifetime and I am not a young man. 'The Shawshank Redemption" 1994 is a film adaptation of a 1982 Stephen King Novella called Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption. Again shot in the 1990's, This 1950's - 1960's period piece prison drama stars Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins and has nothing to do with horror like most of Stephen Kings novels and movies but instead has everything to do with HOPE and humanity. That's all I'm going to say, no spoiler alerts. IMDb has this film as the highest ranked of all time. It also appears on the top of many lists of the best movies of all time.

I don't know if it will fit with your plans, but I think some of the best music fitted to a film's action is to be found in The Big Country. Perhaps you'll try it, if you haven't already.

I recommend you check out the 2014 biopic "Love and Mercy" following Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, it's extremely accurate to what really happened unlike a lot of biopics that distort the facts somewhat. I really enjoy the scenes of Brian making Pet Sounds, and it also closely matches the leaked studio tapes of those sessions as well.

If you get around to it please check the film "Tommy" the movie based on the rock opera by the English rock group, The Who. Pete Townshend wrote the music and the movie which was filmed in England also starred Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, Elton John (as the Pinball Wizard, he also sang the song), Tina Turner as "the Acid Queen" she also sang that song and Jack Nicholson is also in the movie, he plays a psychiatrist and sings too. It's a bit bizarre but it was an amazing movie in 1975 to see in the theater. It's on youtube now for free, anyone can watch it. "Tommy" is also now on Broadway in NYC.

I watched the full copy of the movie but it may have been taken down. It's a classic rock opera. At least most of it seems to still be on yt.

I hope "Twister" was one of those movies. It came out when I was 10 years old and it made me want to be a storm chaser... if I weren't a musician right now, I'd be a meteorologist and maybe even a storm chaser. Along with you and other music channels, I also follow a lot of storm chasing and meteorology channels like Reed Timmer and Ryan Hall Y'All...

This is good news. Coincidentally, I am at a personal milestone. If I watch a film tonight it will be my 4000th listed on the Letterboxd site. Last night I watched "Walk Up" by the Korean director Hong Sang-soo. It was my 19th of his, and every one of them has been worthwhile. Best wishes for success with the new UA-cam channel!

Our family wraps up our time together with a movie together every major holiday. The wife and I have discussed introducing that movie to our adult children on a holiday coming soon. I'll check out your other channel.

My childhood as a reader was a great deal like yours, so I don't find it at all unusual. From reading all of my schoolteacher mother's personal library to reading the dictionary, been there, done that. In fact, now that I'm retired I read even more. I like to go places and do things, to see and learn, and books are the quickest way to do that, and the best way short of personally living it all. I feel like I'm a many layered composite of many people's lives and adventures, including my own. Reading did that.
Before the end of your journey with Queen, you could try watching Bohemian Rhapsody, the Queen biography. The timeline of certain events have been slightly altered to fit the movie but you'll get an insight into the band and I think they matched up the actors quite well.
Another good film is the biography of The Four Seasons, Jersey Boys.

The Best insight into Queen is watching the two-part documentary Days of Our Lives from 2011. It's the best documentary about Queen spanning their entire career, and contrary to the movie it tells the truth, has interviews with A LOT of important people for the band's story, and it has a lot of rare footage and photos.

An aside...rock related: There's a nice visual tribute to the Bo Rhap movie in the music video 'Bubble' by Band-Maid. A rather decent band...rock and roll is far from dead 😁
As someone who still has his program and banner from the Freddie Tribute concert, I wouldn't recommend watching that film to gain an insight into Queen any more than I'd recommend watching Ray to learn about Ray Charles, or I Saw The Light to learn about Hank.

2) The Pursuit of Happyness ( based on a true story)
3) Little shop of horrors (Musical)
All three movies were funny and sad as well. There were intresting, entertaining and give higly emotional experiences. I would really preciate it when you write these 3 movies on your list. And of course, as a huge ⚜️Queen👸 fan: Bohemian Rhapsodie - the Biopic. It's not in my ranking list. It's stand for itself.

You can always combine the 2 and watch rock operas (like Tommy or Hair), but do a review of one of the songs before watching the movie. I don’t think there are many movies like that so you wouldn’t have to do it many times, but I think it would be fun! Or maybe also find movies that have a popular song in the soundtrack and review that song, and when you review the movie, mention how you feel the song fits in (or doesn’t fit in) in the movie

You MUST watch "A Hard Day's Night" - obviously. :-) I believe I suggested this before many videos ago, as I suppose many other folks have. Then of course the film "Help!" - which is another Richard Lester masterful creation.
Consider running through films by the greatest directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Roman Polanski, Ingman Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock, David Fincher, Francis Ford Coppola, William Friedkin, Steven Speilberg, etc. etc.
You'll never run out of wonderful films to watch by mining an "Auteur" director's filmography.
Combine your two projects by reviewing "The Blues Brothers" which is a fun film with some great music (not all rock - it includes Cab Calloway performing his 1931 hit, minnie the moocher)
Oh, this is such amazing news! Two Oscar-winning movies which I immediately think might appeal to you are Amadeus and Out of Africa, if you've never seen them. Anyway, can't wait to see your reaction to pop culture moments which most of us have already gone through.
I'm a fellow dictionary-reader! We had a big encyclopedia too, but I gave up about around the early Bs :(
I recognize the song, but I'll need a hint to guess the movie. For film reviews, may I suggest:
The Elephant Man - Having read the script presented to him by David Lynch, John Hurt offered to play the lead role for free, despite 6+ hours of make up every day.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe,
Dancer in the Dark (Bjork wrote the score and the director had to convice her to play the part as well) - the saddest musical.
Blazing Saddles - the funniest musical (but it should be known, the actors insited on the more inappropriate language).
Thom Yorke of Radiohead sings with Bjork on one song off of the soundtrack, called Selma Songs, but in the film, she sings it with the main actor.
One concern I'd have was seeing a movie that turns out to have some rock music in the soundtrack that would expose you to a song before doing it on this channel. Then, there is the idea of rock-inclusive films that are already covered, like "A Hard Day's Night" or (soon) "Help!".
I wonder if B movies might be included sometimes. If so, it might be worthwhile to peak at Mystery Science Theater 3000 (aka MST3K), the show that riffs (comedy, not guitar) them. There are episodes on UA-cam for access (can't speak for any copyright issues there) to check it out.
The first thing I associated with your movie theme song was Robert Redford, then I thought of 'The Great Gatsby' and immediately after 'The Sting'.
When I was a child (8 or 9 years old), lacking books for my age (after reading all my comic books and Jules Verne's 'A 15-Year-Old Captain'), with a library full of adult books , there was one that sparked my interest and I read it from cover to cover (and I read it for a long time): The Bible, but I did not read it as a religious book (because I was a child and my parents did not profess any religion) but as a great adventure book and other literary genres (even, if you like, the supernatural horror genre, considering the Apocalypse [just remember the movie 'The Omen* and its sequels]).
Those were the beginnings of my great passion for reading (at that time I lived in a suburban area, somewhat far from the city), when I returned to live in the city, a few years later, I became a member of the municipal library and there was no longer a lack of books to read.
Perhaps it is paradoxical: you lived surrounded by Amish (religious people, if there are any) and, lacking books, you read the English dictionary; I was a child without religion who, for lack of books, read the Bible.
By the way, one of my favorite films is 'The Maltese Falcon', based on the novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett, directed by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre as Joel Cairo.
Jon Anderson (Yes) and Vangelis' song 'The Friends of Mr. Cairo' is a tribute to classic films, especially 'The Maltese Falcon' and the character played by Peter Lorre.
That's great news, Amy. I really enjoy your music reviews, so I bet that I would enjoy your movie reviews as well. You would be a natural for reviewing music themed films like Pink Floyd The Wall and the music scores for film. As a fan of motion picture soundtracks, I highly recommend hearing soundtracks composed by Bernard Hermann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Henry Mancini, and John Barry. I hope you'll review a film noir movie(s); I recommend beginning with Double Indemnity to see if you like the genre.
Oh, hope you will do Local Hero. You should enjoy it, the soundtrack is by Mark Knopfler.
A lot of great music in movies, too. "Also Sprach Zarathustra" at the beginning of "2001:..." for instance. Almost every Judy Garland film. Astaire and Rogers' "Waltz in Spring Time." "The Lord of the Rings", of course!
Amy, you were so lucky to spend your formative years without commercial distractions. I feel like movies and television enter through my ears and eyes are are rotting my brain out from the inside. Ah but you are safe from this fate, for you transform dissipations into industry! But be sure to prioritize your health and happiness. For example, you don't *have* to watch anything directed by Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino (I know I won't!). Seriously, some films are torture. Put yourself first.

As a musician, I would love to hear your thoughts on the score specifically. The Sting is a great example. Most people are exposed to orchestral music from movies. I would love to know your thoughts on composers like Williams, Zimmer, Goldsmith, Herrmann, etc.
You should focus on films with 'significant' music - there are some great composers working in film. Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore, John Willliams ... Classic FM have a list of the "top ten"
My sister - she a multi-instrumentalist former opera singer with 25 years of subsequent teaching chops - will be thoroughly impressed by this choice. I'll be checking in with her tomorrow.

I read a lot too as a kid but thank goodness I was exposed to a lot of music playing on the radio and we had records too back in the 70s and we even got to go to a few rock concerts such as The Rolling Stones in 1981. Of course I am no musician. Had a pretty carefree childhood that probably doesn't exist today. We didn't have an internet to go on for starters.
I grew up being exposed to all of the pop culture music genres (and not so pop culture) - Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, R&B, Rap, Top 40, Dance, Blues, Country, and some Classical and Jazz. I've also experienced a large variety of popular movies / blockbusters. Unfortunately, your music channel rarely covers artists I want to see you react to - even though I love your reactions.
I kinda feel like that's how the movie channel will be too. Not being negative, just pointing out my personal experience / taste. With that said, I will subscribe to your movie channel and keep an eye for the ones that interest me. Best of luck Amy!

The movie Witness would be a fascinating watch for you. The life of an Amish community is disturbed by dramatic outside events and the consequent arrival in their midst of an undercover policeman (Harrison Ford), who is himself gradually changed by the experience. It is beautifully filmed, the acting is excellent and the storyline both thrilling and engaging. The portrayal of Amish life is something you would evidently be well placed to comment on.
You might consider watching the Marx Brothers movies, if you haven't already seen them. Harpo could end up being your favorite Marx Brother.

I'm glad you married a German. Of course, perhaps I'm biased, but I am American, so I think I'm in the clear. I agree with many of the comments about watching "A Hard Day's Night", maybe after a few other movies. I'll suggest "Young Frankenstein" for a comedy, and that you might want to watch the original black and white film of Frankenstein to start with.
