I Bought the Cheapest Headset on Amazon and This is What Happened

I bought the cheapest headset on Amazon to see if you can get by with a basic headset. For the pilot that isn't able to buy a lightspeed or Bose headset, can you sort by price and buy the least expensive one? I bought the headset made by Rugged Radios / Rugged Air and as it turns out, you could do a lot worse for the price.

This is the headset I use. I got them when I first started training, and they work fine. I didn’t want to spend a fortune when I was just getting started, and I’ll upgrade eventually, but so far I have no complaints. Pretty good for the price.

I have a Kore for passengers, very similar to the rugged air. I’ve had no issues with them. I started out with David Clark’s then moved up to Lightspeed Zulu 3’s. I love the Lightspeeds, but occasionally they don’t seal well around my sunglasses. I have tinnitus as well, mine from years of duck hunting without ear protection (dumb move in hindsight), the ANR’s were a breath of fresh air.
I like the honest review and non-silly stuff occasionally, your channel is a hidden gem in aviation!

They do have "tall" ear paddings from lightspeed which I found help with the sunglass seal. Basically the padding is slightly thicker.

I have one of those and 3 of the Rugged headset that's the next step up (stereo instead of mono). I think I paid about $135 for those. They came with a case and another extra or two. I like them pretty well. One of these days I'll move up to a Lightspeed, but these allowed me to get my whole family into the plane without breaking the bank. The plane takes care of that.

Being an old fart, the first tangible symbol I bought when I was a student pilot was an aluminum E-6B. Back then we didn't use headsets, because we didn't know any better. After all, there was a perfectly good speaker in the headliner and a handheld microphone, What more did we need?
I still have my whiz wheel and my plotter (both Jeppeson Sanderson), although the plotter is getting pretty yellow as the plastic degrades with age. I, myself, am degrading with age so I can't really fault the plotter.

My CFI is very old school. He has many decades of experience. (But the reflexes of a 14 year old e-sports player, if I make a mistake).
Of course I had to buy an aluminum E6-B. His is nearly 40 years old.
I have to admit that I like this thing as a backup
      Simple, smart and indestructible.
But after my checkride, I will use all tech that 2024 provides.

Nice video Bryan! Good to see you flying the Comanche. I bought some cheap headsets off ebay when the family started flying with me. They were ok... one has started having the insulation come off the wires, the other had some scratchy sound and would break squelch often. I've moved up to DC's for the spares, again off ebay for around $150-$200 for H10-13.4's so a pretty good deal.
I didn't think to tell you to add one of your "Heels on the floor" clips in there so that people would know it was actually you on the video and that you haven't been abducted.😂

I just started as a student pilot (12 hours) For my intro flight I borrowed a friend’s A20’s which let me taste the gold standard and decided I might as well get the good stuff too since I’ll need them eventually. Well the good stuff has been on back order for a while so to get me by till then I ordered a pair of these. I figured being less than a tenth the price they’d be garbage. While they certainly aren’t as quiet they’re perfectly adequate for my little piper archer. The radios come in perfectly clear and even after a couple hours of touch and gos they felt very comfortable. I’d certainly recommend them. I plan on keeping mine as a back up / passenger pair.

You don't need a headset, all you need is an audio in jack on your aviation transmitter. Plug in your mp3 player, fire up your play list, and watch them dancing as you buzz the tower upside down in an outside loop. I mean, I thin that's what they're doing in there, dancing. Sure are moving around frantically a lot. Never seen a dance like that. Freestyle!

Saw your post on the Student Pilot FB page a couple days ago and have been waiting for this video. I purchased a set of Rugged Air when I got back into flying in 2020 and they have served me very well. Actually just recently purchase a pair for my wife for when she goes with me. We are still renting planes, so it is a cost affordable option for a very good headset. I actually purchased a small BT receiver and have it plugged into my AUX port via cable that I use to make phone calls on the ramp and also have it paired to my Ipad for ADSB warnings. All in all, a very good set up that is currently working for me! Until I hit the LOTTO of course and then make the jump!! Thanks for the video!! Fair Skies and Following Winds!!

Great post Bryan, thanks for the info. Like you, so many commenters are saying they have tinnitus, so they bought themselves a nice ANR headset and threw the cheap sets in the back for the kids. Think about this for a moment - you have tinnitus, you know how you got it, and you know how annoying (and debilitating) it is. But you’re OK with your kids wearing cheapo headsets and getting hearing damage at a young age?? If you’re regularly flying long-distance trips with your kids (or even short ones), please please please consider spending a few bucks on a GOOD set of headsets and consider all the future medical bills and hearing and headache issues and even learning disabilities that you’ve avoided for your kids. Believe me, your kids are going to ruin their hearing anyways with their ever-present phones and overly-loud ear buds…. But please don’t add to the damage. Thanks for ‘listening’. (BTW, I too was waiting for the backwards-recording voices coming out of the headsets when you were testing them! - maybe you can make a “part 2”, cutting-room floor version of this!). LOVE your videos!

This headset got me through my solo XC in training. I knew I'd be continuing in aviation so I got a Zulu3, but I bought 2 more Rugged headsets so my daughters each had their own (which they decorated with stickers) and the original is a spare. For longer flights, my girls have the foam ear plugs to help with the prolonged noise. They work great for the money. I'd highly recommend them as a first headset for a student pilot on a budget.

Good video. I went through 2 cheap headsets in flight training before I decided I needed ANR for clarity, in the form of Bose A20s. Made a big difference. Later a friend decided he wanted to fly, I said buy a headset to show commitment. Eventually, he decided flying wasn't for him and sold his 2 hour A20s to me for $500. Now I have two sets thanks to the "friend deal".

I did the same thing long ago after buying my first four passenger plane. I have since bought a six passenger plane and got better extra headsets for passengers. However, I believe the rugged air headset is the one I use to record audio for my videos and sits in the rarely used sixth seat with a microphone in between the ear cups and the headset tapped shut.

I don't necessarily mind loud things, as evidenced by my unhealthy number of vintage motorcycles. But man, figuring out what the HECK a controller or foreign exchange student from the Shoulder Stripes Academy just said on the radio is already hard enough with the noise cancellation. Sorry Rugged is all “budget” level stuff. They take some of the cheapest radio stuff that you can buy with Chinese names like Baofeng, then they just change the brand stickers and double the price. Maybe their headsets are good enough to last a while just being used by kids in the back of a Comanche for a few hours a month - hey if they work for you, great. I too sometimes look for cheap stuff to fill a short term need. Just don’t kid yourself about what Rugged is selling. I don’t know what their status with the FCC is now - they were busted a couple of years because several of their radio models (maybe their entire line) weren’t legal to sell in the U.S.

My headset was so cheap it said "Experimental" on it. I inked out the "Experi" so it just said "mental". Now it's so old the rubber is deteriorating. But it still works! Don't remember how much it was. Anyway, thanks for the fly along!

I have tinnitus as well and an ANR headset really reduced the post flight ringing.

That's funny 'cus my flight school have us using Rugged air, too! 😂
It's the only one I have used but I don't see anything wrong with them.

They make a child sized one too, I got it for my 3 year old. Quickly after that I discovered the isolate button on my audio panel but the headset works great for the purpose.

Gotta love tinnitus. I’ve found a lot of good aviation channels on UA-cam to listen to while falling asleep so I don’t concentrate of the ringing.

My first headset when I first started my flight training in 2005 was a cheap Plantronics but as you said it was mine. Money and family made me stop. Restarted January 2021 and got my PPL 10/12/21 and when I started I bought DC OneX. Love them. Just purchased another headset on Ebay, a ASA one. Great shape 60$ for my wife and kids if they fly with me.

multiple gear down checks. kudos and I love seeing that! Headsets. Not to date myself, but I started before ANR was a thing. I still have the student headsets my wife and I bought pre Y2k - and they still work! After 10+ years on Bose A20's, I can't wear PNR for more than 10 minutes without complaining like an entitled pre-teen at Starbucks that is out of non-fat cream. :) .. to that end, there are also "cheap" ANRs on Amazon that work very well in a pinch and don't, well, 'pinch' the head. I have some if you want to test/compare. They are worth a summer of lawn service from the rear seat passengers :)

Yeah. Having bought a new plane, there are a ton of new things I have to get for it, Fire extinguisher, shoulder harnesses, tug, etc. So rather than doing a video every 2 weeks, I am doing one every week now and every other video is less funny and more VLOG.

I bought two of those for back seat passengers. Front seaters get Bose. Not terrible, certainly worth the (lack of) money. Would be fine for student pilots, but yeah you definitely owe it to your ears to get a good headset.

My "training" headsets were so bad it actually started to form bad habits. The problem was the Mic did a terrible job of filtering out background noise, so every time I tried to call Tower at decent power setting, they could barely hear me. I noticed after time I'd habitually pull power a bit when keying up, to reduce noise, only to push it back in once my call was done.

My 100 buck headset lasted 25 years, and I bought another cheap pair on eBay for 150 bucks and they are still good to go after a few years now. I like hearing the plane and not worrying about batteries. When I buy a jet, I'll waste money on fancy headsets so I can be cool, but for now I'll save the money something more important.

The only thing that would have made this review better is if you had used the voice scrambler when you first went live on the headset. 😂. When I fly with my friends locally, they both have 100$ headsets (aSa and Rugged) in all of the jacks of their C-150, 206, and RV10… I do notice a lot more ambient noise… but it is all they use and they are in their 70’s. I do bring my Lightspeed Sierras if it is preplanned… My first CFI wanted me to purchase my own headset; my current CFI has Bose in the left seat and forbids the unplugging. 😎. (Actually, on my long cross countries I wear mine. He just doesn’t want the headsets plugged and unplugged everytime a different person gets in/out of the rental plane… so $98 wet includes Bose ANR).

Great video. I never flew with a headset when I was flying, back in the 70s and early 80s, those were for 'professional pilots. Yeah, right. If you're just starting out flying, GET A HEADSET, even if it isn't ANR (Active Noise Reduction).

I considered my A20 headset to be part of the cost of my training (for which I took out a loan); I played bass in a death metal band as a teen, so... RINGGGGGGGGGGGG.
