My boyfriend woke me up thrashing around with a nightmare. I tried to hug him to confort him. He freaked out more and woke up. He abruptly got out of bed and stayed out on the balcony for about 15 minutes. Came in, and continued to avoid eye contact with me. He was obviously seething. I finally was able to get hin talking. He said I was an octopus trying to wrap my tenticles around him, and he wasn't sure if he could ever forgive me. Explaining my concern, and hug made no difference to his overwhelmingly vivid experience that I was an octopus. He never did get over it, so we ended up breaking up. Some years later, he said that I was the love of his life. He could never trust me and my octopus ways again, though. He did have some diagnosed mental illness, but refused to tell me what it was. That may have had something to do with it. My weirdest break-up story: he thought I was an octopus, and never forgave me.
Sounds like paranoid schizophrenia. Friend of mine thought our other mate was learning hypnosis to sleep with him, as well as a slew of other things that didn't make sense. When he didn't take his medication. Meds are so important.

I have been very clear with my boyfriend- this is a thing that happens and when it does I will wake him up for a moment because I'll need a hug, a kiss on the forehead, and for him to call the dream version of him an idiot, and I do the same for him. It has happened to both of us

One night I dreamed that my husband has died. Our kids were still very young back then and I woke up in cold sweat and as some nightmares go I couldn't tell if it was real or a dream. I made a grap for him (cause he'll always sleep very close to me he rolls over onto my side of the bed every single night) and all my hand reached was an empty matress. I started crying bitterly, sobbing into my pillow and that's when the light on the other side of the bed was switched on and my very sleepy and worried husband asked what's wrong. Obviously he had rolled on the edge on his side of the bed in his sleep, probably because I was trashing during having my nightmare. Probaly the worst nightmare I've ever had.

These are always the dreams that CONTINUE when I fall back asleep so I have to stay up for hours before I can shake it off and hopefully fall back asleep to dream of other stuff 😅
it's absolutely ridiculous that anything else is accepted. this is a massive personal gripe of mine. it's a goddamn dream! and i'm saying this as a lady with lifelong problems with sleep and dreams, night terrors, sleep paralysis, chronic nightmares, etc. dreams are fucking scary and can be upsetting, but they are not reality in the end. and your behavior should reflect that.

@@thaegan My dreams are chronically rooted in whatever minor anxiety I have at that point, and I always wakenup confused. Nobody listens to them because they sound fucking strange. Many people having this kind of dream about being cheated on are being told by their gut to react on emotions but really the person just wants some reassurance that they're cared about and it won't happen. So the action is to have a calm talk a few hours after it to reassure and show your love. And for people who vivid dream/struggle to tell reality from a dream, you CANNOT say that they need to "just reflect it isn't real" because those people cannot tell that it isn't - hence the reassurance.

I once had a fight with a friend in a dream. we were both angry, I said something and their face just dropped. instantly regretted saying the thing, spent the rest of the dream desperately searching for them to apologise. woke up with no memory of what was said, just a deep sense of guilt & fear that I'd destroyed a really important friendship and the sure & certain knowledge that I couldn't even apologise for it, because "hey, I'm really sorry I offended a fictional version of you that my brain made up. please don't hate me for whatever I said" is...not a thing any human will understand. but oh holy crap, it feels real for a while.
