The whole purpose of the tradition of feeding each other cake is symbolic of being there for each other. Smashing cake just wrecks the message.

I'm as old as dirt, and I do remember when the bride and groom would feed one another from the first slice cut from the wedding cake. It was also a photo moment. But at some point, someone decided to deliberately smash or smear the cake or frosting onto their new spouse's mouth or face. From then, it snowballed into cake being smashed and rubbed into faces (and sometimes it was obvious that this was a surprise to the one who got caked). Now we have full on food fights, with everyone at the reception joining in, and people grabbing and throwing food on the floor or at each other. It's stupid as it is mean-spirited. Then again, there was a time people didn't blow up themselves up (literally) during "gender reveals" because it involved having a cake that would be cut at some point to reveal either a blue or pink interior.

I got a call from a friend who was the maid of honor and she was laughing her rear off. Her sister told her soon to be husband if he purposely ruins her dress or smashed cake in her face, she'd anull the wedding. He called her bluff and smeared cake on her face then down her dress. She calmly wiped it off, walked over to the stage, took the DJ mic and told everyone to enjoy the night, her and her sister (my friend) will be enjoying a mini vacation and make sure they take their gifts and cash with them as they leave that night.

But he kept joking about it because he likes to push my buttons. When the time came, however, he fed me the cake without shoving it in my face. Then, because I was so proud of him for not doing it, I put a tiny bit of icing on the tips of both of our noses, which led to some cute photos.

Another thing to think about with smashing someone into the cake: Those multi tiered cakes have supports in them to keep them from collapsing or shifting. I happened to read one some time ago shared by a musician, def one that needs to be included in future!
Groom books my string quartet for the entire day. All seems to go well, though you can tell the groom’s family is much more well-off than the bride’s and she seems to love attention. But either way, ceremony and drinks went without a hitch, everyone seemed very happy.
Fast-forward to the meal. We played through the whole thing and as we were packing up, they started speeches. Usually, we’d have left by this point but our stuff was in a little side-room off the banquet room separated only by salon-style swing doors and we had no way of getting out unless we walked awkwardly between the guests’ tables and so we decided to stay put until the speeches were over and listen in.
Best Man and Father of the Bride’s speeches went well and then it was left to the groom. He thanked everyone for coming and then said that for his speech he needed everyone to open the envelopes that had been placed on the tables. There was an excited bustling as people appointed someone on each table to open the envelopes, followed shortly by a very quick change in the atmosphere.
Someone gasped and another person audibly said, “What the heck is this?!” amongst the general confusion. The groom gets back on the microphone and says, “Yes, I’m sorry to say that what you see in these pictures has been going on for about two months. Needless to say, I will be annulling the marriage. Thank you all for coming.”
Turns out the bride had been having an affair with the best man and the groom had found out and hired a private investigator to photograph them at it. He’d printed the pictures and put them in the envelopes. Of course, chaos ensued. The groom dropped mic and bailed immediately. The bride’s mother threw red wine all over her dress and kept screaming that she was a “lady of leisure,” along with an awful lot of things alluding to the fact that her daughter would never find another good, rich man again.
The groom’s two brothers beat up the best man pretty badly. There was a lot of screaming and glass-throwing. The bride was crying uncontrollably and everyone left as it was so awkward. We just hid in our little side room until everyone had gone and then emerged, slightly shell-shocked, to inspect the pictures. There could be no doubt as to what was happening in them.
The groom emailed us a few days later and apologized to us as he realized we’d got stuck. He explained that he’d only found out a couple weeks before the wedding, and having paid for everything with little chance of refunds, he just decided to go ahead with it and out her so that she couldn’t twist the story to her family after the fact.
How he made it through the entire wedding I will never know, but it certainly made for an interesting day at work.

So quick context for the second video. The garland is a very important part of an Indian wedding, it represents the acceptance of having the other person as their spouse. To place it on someone else's neck is super disrespectful. Essentially its like the groom pulling the Maid of Honour and placing the wedding ring on her hand instead of the bride. *edited for Indian wedding

I'd always hated my cousins bf, and knew it was gonna be trouble when they decided to get married. In every photo she posted, she'd make a little joke about how she'd had to force her "grumpy little cutie" to take a picture with her because he said "couple photos are gay" (yeah, real charmer, right?). He always looked so resentful to be with her. Wedding day rolls around and here are just a few of the things that happened: 1) Groom was late for the wedding and was so drunk he could barely stand during the ceremony. He didn't smile once the entire time. Slurred his vows and couldn't really repeat them, and the officiant ended up just giving it a pass. 2) Was extremely uncooperative and a belligerent asshole during photos. There's a reason the wedding photos never saw the light of day. 3) Was even drunker at the reception. Couldn't find his own phone in his drunken state, so stole someone's, called his friend's boss, and cussed him out for not letting his buddy have the day off (his "buddy", asked his boss the MORNING OF if he could take the day off for the wedding). 3) Reception was held in a dirt-floor barn. Groom and his party kept throwing beer everywhere, so soon the entire barn floor was a pit of beer mud. 4) Groom was so drunk during the garter removal that he stuck his head under her dress and started to try to do certain..ahem..activities. The bride was shoving his head away and begging him to stop. 5) The groom's long-term ex girlfriend was the bartender at the reception, and made it no secret that she and the groom still had a thing for each other. The best man speech was essentially "yeah, we really have no idea why our bud decided to go for a fat, girly girl. We really wanted him to marry his ex. Hey ex-gf, you're still hot as hell! Thanks for serving up drinks for us! Yeah, he and ex-gf were so good together. She was so cool but he decided to marry this girl instead, I guess. So good luck."
    So yeah. They're divorced now.

That whole cake thing does show how a person in that marriage can escalate something till it gets out of control. I just returned from a wedding where the husband put a small dot of icing on the bride's nose. He was going to rub it off. It was a cute gesture. She retaliated by pushing the whole piece against his face and rubbing it all over his face and shirt. He was "like what the hell?" She couldn't leave well enough alone and accept the cute gesture without escalating things over the top. He is still chipped about how she reacted, understanding that she will ALWAYS have to win a disagreement and for some reason she thinks it's a competition between them. She doesn't see anything wrong with what she did... because she ALWAYS has to win a disagreement.
If neither person is willing to stop escalating... even though it's "just cake" then that lack of respect will be a hard thing to overcome.

The only thing he did wrong was not talking to her about it and see if she will be ok with the dotting and that she is welcome to do the exact same to him and wipe it off and move on. I can of course understand that he was trying to be cute with her, but clearly she is not a person that appreciates that and that should not have been the first time he noticed that. Therapy is needed. I hope they are ok.

My husband and I did the cake smash thing at our wedding. But we had discussed it before hand and both knew the other was okay with it. He did go a little overboard and ended up getting asked up my nose which was not pleasant but it's something we laugh about now (7 years later) It also helps that I did my own makeup. Yeah I had to to do the bathroom and fix it after but it wasn't a big deal cuz I was expecting it.
I think what it comes down to is communication and knowing if your new spouse is okay with it or not.

I actually have a cake smashing story that isn't terrible.
My cousin and his fiancé did the cake smashing thing at their wedding, but they talked about it and planned it before hand. When the time came to cut the cake, they help each other put on cheap plastic raincoats(which was cute), and they fed each other a bite of cake normally, the way that you should, then they took a small piece and smashed it in each other's faces. And they didn't smear it everywhere. Just on their cheeks a bit, not all over, and my aunt had wipes on standby to clean up.
They're still married several years later and are very happy.

Dear Faith Cronin, not quite at the wedding ceremony but I had a former pen friend show up on the morning of my wedding at the best man’s house where I staying. She later gate crashed the reception to apparently give me a gift. While I was a bit annoyed at her turning up on the morning of my wedding, I did have a small bit of sympathy for her. She was from the same small provincial town as the bride. For some reason the people in the town thought we were, against all the evidence, an item. When it was announced that I was marrying [name deleted] people kept bugging my former pen friend to the point where I think she told them that she had an invite. By the time of the reception I was a fairly happy man so I rescinded the instruction to security to have my former pen friend throw out if she turned up. I was still surprised she did show up though. At least she was able to tell her work that she attended the reception.
And her gift to me? A slightly inappropriate massage device, which mysteriously disappeared from the gift table. This was returned after I told the bride’s family that where I come from (another country) we have a custom that if someone presents a gift that goes missing they must grant the giver a wish as recompense! Needless-to-say, the gift mysteriously was returned! I think they were afraid my former pen friend may have had something more than massage device in mind. [Okay, I kept a straight face when detailing this “custom” but really I just hate theft!]
So, yeah, even nerdy and homely people like me sometimes have strange ghosts from the past materialise at weddings. I does happen.

Also my letters to them were fairly bland (none of this you’re the only girl for me stuff, more like I live on the coast and the seagulls are restless tonight). And while the former pen friend was fairly young and a bit immature, nothing suggested they would turn up unannounced prior to my wedding or the reception. Fortunately there wasn’t much drama at our wedding. If there was, my bridesmaids and groomsmen did a really good job of hiding it. The only thing I know of I found out afterwards. My MOH and I have been best friends since 1st grade and I always thought her day was just quirky like the creative type. Nope turns out he was an alcoholic while we were growing up. I had a bar at my wedding and her dad and her underaged sister got hammered. My husband is a cop and it was also a room full of cops. Idk how they didn’t get arrested. Funny story though- my rich uncle created a password with the bartender so his wife and adult kids could buy drinks and using the password put it on the tab. About 10 or 15 minutes into the reception the password got passed around somehow and he ended up paying for over half of the reception’s alcohol consumption. We also recently attended one of our friends weddings. The groom’s aunt would not stop talking about his ex wife in-front of the bride. He warned her several times but she didn’t stop. The bride and groom rescinded her invitation. He’s a cop too so almost everyone in attendance was also a cop or law enforcement. She called 911 saying she was going to bomb the wedding!!!

When asked to make her wedding vows, my friend's cousin (soon-to-be bride) doesn't want to make any vow or promise. This is from someone who is fond of poetry and sometimes posts them in social media. Really made me question how long the couple will last (I personally think she just agreed to the wedding because she is pregnant).

My awful wedding photographer in the early 2000s chased us around the reception insisting we do the cake feeding/smashing thing or we'd 'regret it forever.' We flat refused and my uncles (mother's brothers) found the whole thing hilarious, so, after the cake cutting, they smashed cake into each other's faces with my friends and family taking pictures and cackling (by this point the photographer was universally reviled for general obnoxiousness, including leaving his ringer on interminably through the vows *you have an incoming call-you have an incoming call-you have an incoming call*). Anyway, the photographer complained to my parents that he was being mocked by the cake smushing, was ignored, and sat in a corner through the rest of the reception, sulking.

True story. When my step-brother got married about 30 years ago they had their function at a large hotel that could cater for two weddings at once. When the groom at the other wedding stood up to make his speech he said "As my bride has been cheating within my best man for the last year I’m off on honeymoon…on my own." The reception footage is on video, because we're that old, and I haven't gotten it transferred, so I am relying on my memory. Anyway, thank you for that last one as a "palate cleanser". I used to work in wedding organizing. In my observation grooms are not into wedding ceremonies and they get start feeling the burned out when they proceed to the reception. In weddings usually people making it its all about the “bride” the main attraction is “the bride”while the groom just standing there as a “support” of the whole show which he supposed to be the main character too or get the same amount of attention like the bride gets. I understand the grooms lowkey frustrations that they don’t even realize in that moment 😆

Got to say, that African one is probably being misinterpreted as an affair or whatever, but in many West African countries men are legally allowed to take multiple wives. Her objection appeared to be to him taking another wife when he wasn’t supporting his existing family properly, which is usually one of the conditions of being allowed to take a second wife in the first place (being financially able to support them).
Edit: For people in my replies, ‘West African’ and ‘Christian’ are not mutually exclusive. A lot of you seem to think that I haven’t noticed they’re Christians. To be clear: the laws of a country and someone’s religion don’t actually have anything to do with each other, and the law can state that you can have multiple wives regardless of whether your personal faith is Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, it doesn’t matter. It’s the law, and people can take advantage of it, or not, as they choose. Religion has nothing to do with it unless, as a Christian, he decides it’s against his personal faith. In this case, that may be why he chose not to tell his first wife that he was getting married again, who knows? But you all should really get educated. African nations =\= America or any other Western country.
