Why American Education is Broken
Вставка

- Everyone agrees that American education leaves much to be desired. American students consistently report lower test scores than their peers in countries like China, Finland, and Vietnam. But why? Are American students just dumb? Are our teachers too lazy or too ineffective? Or is something else to blame? Nikhil Goyal, sociologist and education activist, joins us to explain.

When teachers have to buy their own supplies you know something isn’t right.
TRUE!
When .uk kids were in elementary they had to take turns buying supplies like extra kleenex, ziplocks, dry erase markers etc. The kids were also not allowed to bring their own supplies, like paper or pencils. Everything was brought in and shared. If there was a shortage a letter would go out for parents to put base and send in more.
I can't edit for some resson, but I meant when my kids were in elementary.
Yes, can't teach science with out supplies, but the sports teams have their gear, and get transportation to games in the US.
In most other countries sports are not a part of the school, but extra curricular, with the community providing funding, not the school. I think part of the divide between Americans festers because of team sports, teaching at a young age not to like the "others" from the opposing team.
In South Korea, teachers didn't get office supplies except for paper, teachers do get paid a lot more than in the US. Kids were expected to bring supplies, like coloured paper and retractable knives for themselves. They didn't have much in the way of labs for science.
In Sweden, kids are given a few supplies at the beginning of the year; a three ring binder, paper, two pencils, an eraser and ruler.
@@lindatisue733 I mean the school does make money. It falls in line with the investment business style of the U.S. . I mean if a 30,000 people would pay $10 to watch high school or college students throw a football around then why wouldn’t they invest. As a former student athlete and I saw first hand what sports provide. If a scout came to one of my games and I performed well then the school would also get some recognition. I’m not saying that’s wrong but like it or not, unfortunately schools are businesses. I really like your approach but everything in this country is run like a business but schools only receive they don’t provide but that isn’t the teachers fault. The school system in America would be fixed if we simply realized that teachers either need to be paid more if nothing is going to be done.

One of the things that boosted my grades in high school was one of the teachers starting a shared closet. @@Dennis-nc3vw 🤔 Has any such attention been shown towards solving the list of social issues itemised in this video? No? Then that explains the disparities you mention.
As an educator in a rural area, I’m definitely seeing the effects of poverty on my students and how low income schools get treated.
As a grandchild of analphabet people, who immigrated to a well developed european country, i shake my head. My grandparents had nothing and a welfare state (or as german tend to say for their construct: social state. There seems be no equivalent term in english.) made it possible for their offspring to have good education. Hence my grandfather died with a smile on his face, since he had six grandchildren holding a college degree.
And by no means is it perfect here. Neither was it easy for us to accomplish what we did. There were a lot of things that could've been done much better.

My history teacher said "People think it's needless charity, and a waste of funding, how we have cafeterias that serve breakfast and lunch. But kids can't learn anything when they're hungry. You ever tried to focus on something else when you're hungry?"
The number one obstacle of learning is poverty.
"Poverty is the worst form of violence." (Gandhi)
Also the school lunch food looks disgusting! Even Russian food looks better
@Drew They're not hungry because they get free lunch. If you take away that free lunch, what do you get? Hungry kids. Which goes right back to my point that it's a proper investment of school funding to feed the students.
Also my history teacher did teach history, it wasn't some insane school where teachers can monologue whatever without a curriculum. But that didn't stop him from talking about current events or his opinions, nor should it. Current events is soon-to-become history. And talking about history without a perspective is like having a library with no lights in the room: all the content is there, but it's entirely uncomprehensive.
To give you another quote from the same history teacher: "Don't kid yourself, I do have an agenda. If you walk out of this room at the end of the year the same person you were at the start, if you're not even entertaining the idea that you could be wrong about some things, I have failed as a teacher. That doesn't mean you can't disagree with me. I encourage my statements to be challenged, on or off-textbook. If you're not asking questions the whole year, that means you're not curious, or not listening. And if you come across a teacher that claims they have no agenda, don't trust them. Even if they really mean it, even if they try their best to separate fact from opinion, bias *will* slip in."

Is it true that the US doesn't give money to parents for their children?! Here in Germany all the left wing parties are complaining about how the child money isn't enough and has to be raised when children and young people get 250 euros per month, while in the US they don't get money at all??? That's just insane. We have child poverty as well, but I don't think that many children don't have enough to eat here.
Taking a sociology class in college was one of the best decisions I've made. It really opens your eyes to how a society functions from a scientific stand point. True, but a good teacher should be supported and rewarded, not buried in useless rules about having to do tests every five minutes to stress out the students. The average teachers will quickly decide that they are fighting a lost cause, the really, really good ones will pour in their all and then head for a burn-out.
I really hate these inspirational "teacher at a run-down school turns it all around, inspires and motivates students, and all is well" movies. @@nickarjoma5350 don't yall have abortion too
@@nickarjoma5350 illegalization never stopped anything. The US failed the prohibition and it failed the war on drugs, two times where it tried hard to make something illegal. The only thing that happened is that people invented new, more potent drugs or stronger versions of already existing ones.
Same with abortions. Making it illegal will not stop women from having them, it will just make them go to backyard dealers where they get them in unsafe conditions, possibly getting themselves killed in the process or after, or having been sterilized for life because the procedure wasn't done correctly.
No women just decides to get an abortion, same as no one ever just gets a divorce if their marriage is doing fine. It's only the bad marriages getting divorced and only the desperate women, who see no other possibility will get an abortion.
@@nickarjoma5350 I don't think anyone who responds to a comment about the school systems in Finland vs. The US with abortion has any right to cry about strawmanning.
True, there are some restriction to abortion in Finland. If you're happily married with a good economy, and no chronic illnesses, then you don't qualify for abortion. Nevertheless, Finland also offers better possibilities for parents than the US does. You won't go bankrupt just from having a child, you're entitled to paid maternity and/or paternity leave, and should your child get sick, you won't need to worry about debts like in the US. Finland ranks among the Top 10 (sometimes even Top 5) countries in the world to raise a family in. The US isn't even in the Top 30.

I remember just 3-4 years ago I was in high school (in conservative country Oklahoma) and our teachers were literally asking us to buy supplies for the classroom in exchange for bonus points because our schools were so underfunded, as well as our teachers, so they couldn’t even afford to buy all the supplies themselves.
I was a kid when the "No Left Child Behind" first started and looking back made me realize how traumatic it was. I remember teachers sometimes having meltdowns in front of students because they were stressed about testing results of their classes. The pressure that teachers experienced during those times was so much that it pour over onto their students causing them to be anxious.
its so horrible to hold teachers accountable to actually teach!!!!!
@@scubastevoo8404 Having your performance based solely on student performance would be fair if every class in every school was exactly the same and had the same funding. In fact, student success has a direct correlation with parent income. Does that mean that teachers at rich schools are better than teachers at poor schools? Should teachers at poor schools be punished for lower-performing students? The 'No Child Left Behind Program' which focuses on teacher accountability has not resulted in better outcomes. You might be interested to know that in Finland, testing is used by teachers to determine what students need to learn. The US could learn a lot from Finland.

You know, the thing about No Child Left Behind that baffles me the most is that it is pretty much designed to leave kids behind by destroying the schools, instead of, you know, actually giving them money to fix their problems?
That's why in love am generally weary of catchy phrases infact the more catchy a phrase is the more cautious one should be....
Because "fixing" requires money, and the point was never to give schools more money. The point was for schools to utilize "good old fashioned American ingenuity" to squeeze blood from turnips.
NCLB never takes into account childhood poverty, or how well students test in a crumbling school with textbooks a decade or more old. It was a giant con job that frames public schools as failing which leaves the door open for privatization through charters, which was the original intention of NCLB.

This happened to me in 2018 when I voted for Beto instead of Ted Cruz. Hell, they literally allow Republican Students to mock anyone student that isn’t politically aligned with the school district! Expose Magnolia ISD of Magnolia Texas.
That isn’t the only problem with Magnolia ISD. Back in August, they fired a teacher for supporting Black Lives Matter, yet Confederate Flags and other racist Trump shit are free to roam the campuses. Magnolia ISD of Magnolia Texas is Republican! Expose them! Make them famous!
Not to mention that Magnolia ISD follows the Republican “advice” when it comes to handling COVID-19. Look at this screen recording of a super spreader event that was hosted by Magnolia ISD themselves on November 11th! Expose them! Make them famous. Get them trending!
Not to mention that over the weekend of March 6th, Magnolia ISD of Magnolia Texas decided that they would show their true racist White nationalist colors by post extremely racist, terroristic things on their Twitter and their district website as well as sending hate filled text messages to hundreds and thousands of parents.
Magnolia ISD got caught in the act, so they are resorting to putting the blame on “hackers”.
White Supremacists don’t hack other White Supremacists!
Not to mention that they actively censored the local media by kicking them off of their district property. Censorship of the media is a warning sign of fascism!
I should also mention that on night of March 8, they voted to remove their mask mandate which did go into full effect on April 1st.
Also, there are literal paid shills defending Magnolia ISD. These shills are falsely accusing random lefties of doing the “hacking”.
The fact that Magnolia ISD is now accused random lefties, that rightfully call them out btw, of doing the “hacking” should be a dead giveaway that Magnolia ISD of Magnolia Texas is 100% guilty.
Magnolia ISD was never actually “hacked”. They willfully decided to show their true racist white nationalist colors. They got caught! And so they are pinning the blame on random “hackers” in order to shift the blame away from them.
Well.... now they are accusing random lefties fighting for justice of doing the hacking.
There is a reason why they kicked the local media off of their property. They are covering something up, because Magnolia ISD is racist and is 100% guilty.

Even with limited resources, the friends and classmates at Amy were some of the smartest and most hard-working students I have ever met. In my opinion, it starts with the student/teacher resources and the teacher's pay. With the great job they were doing, they deserved more money for what they did. Some of them had to go into their own paychecks to help students stay engaged or just to get necessary supplies. Except that poverty is a direct product of our society - and an intentional one. The Capitalists at the top need a large poor class in order to ensure that the working class falls meekly in line. Fear keeps the workers in line.
It's all a product to ensure that more and more money pools at the top.
Poverty is an intentional policy choice of the government.

@@masterofalltrades_ I don't disagree but I don't think its that simple either. The poor is just as much the responsibility of the average Joe than the government. Most people aren't willing to pay an extra tax for UBI and similar programs. A politician suggesting that will most likely not get elected. Pushing unpopular agendas cost politicians their jobs, safest bet is barley passing any bills so you don't lose your job as an politician. I read in one of Kozol's books about how schoolkids are treated in East St. Louis. Well, it isn't how the teachers treat them, its that East St. Louis is a "tax free zone" meaning it has no tax base so the kids go to schools in buildings with no roof let alone electricity. They were shipped computers by Al Gore through his education initiative but one little detail that got missed by those passing out the computers is that you can't even plug one into the wall when schools don't have electricity. Bless you and the Gravel Institute for laying out this truth so plainly. I am a retired teacher, dissatisfied with our work every step of the way. Poverty is a crime and a choice.
One of the key points that stood out to me was the reading 📚 materials. I started high school in 1988 and when I reached my junior year, my algebra books were at least 50 years old. I was blessed with a good teacher and that made all the difference 🙏
The shit schools we now have aren't broken they're a feature of capitalism. Ever notice how when it's time to cut something education seems to always be first? Look at how they took out classes that helped like shop, electrical, mechanical, and other skill-based learning classes that could help. Kids don't vote but some need them to be dumb too.
Education has to be made a higher priority than it is. I went to a relatively wealthy public school and it was still a shit show. I don't even want to imagine what poorer schools have to go through on a daily basis.
If they are a feature of capitalism. Then how come the schools in other countries with Capitalism are not failing horribly? Including Finland, South Korea, France and more.
They took out shop, electrical, mechanical etc classes because society in the USA makes you believe that you are a sucker for working with your hands. They are telling you have to go to college/university for a big bang smartypants job.
@@koffiegast That's an easy one to answer. First, they're all Democratic Socialist countries. They don't have the level of privatization that we have in here in Murika for social programs like education, medical, etc. Their schools are funded nationally vs by local taxes which can hurt schools based on the incomes of local residents. The notion of needing college is a debt trap as most people can't afford college these days vs say 40yrs ago. One could get a good job with or without a HS diploma even in the '80s now, most can't get entry level, low paying, jobs without some ridiculous amount of experience vs the pay. Capitalism needs under educated worker to work otherwise the whole system breaks down. If you can't think for yourself you'll believe anything and won't know how to research it either. At worst, you'll think there's nothing wrong with you always having to struggle.
That's funny because your socialist idols brought capitalism into their educational system (school choice) and it worked wonders for them.
I want to be a hs teacher but I'm so stressed about how low our literacy rate is - there's so much shame and not enough help!!!!!!
The US is a really, really stupid country. Even if they did this socialist plan to improve the lives of children in poverty, I fear it would take a long, long time to see its effects. I think it's a good start though.
In the mean time, there are a lot of charities about getting children to read at grade level. If you have time, you should check some out in your area.
Don't. I used to be a teacher.
Once again, destroying the thieves and setting the record straight. Thank you!
Love the video. Commenting to boost it for the algorithm!
THANK YOU I’ve been waiting for education to be discussed
Not only this, but the “Pro america” false history that is told in schools
History is the diciest subject to teach. No one will ever agree on what is the "correct" curriculum as history is a conflict of narratives in the present. If we had a neutral, or at least rational, curriculum development regime, we would acknowledge both the honorable and dishonorable things in America's history as well as the complexity of the nations/cultures within our borders. Everyone likes a simple story, but that ain't reality!
Wow, a country's schools that it pays for compliment it? What a shock? Normally I pay people to tear me down and say horrible things about me.
@@Uarehere for that reason its one of the most important. I took history in high school and in college and the difference is staggering. In high school we were taught no nuance. Racism was downplayed, and nationalism was promoted as much as possible. My college US history class was taught by an incredibly knowledgeable man who loved his subject. It was amazing how much is skipped completely. Things like eugenics, social darwinism, and the american socialist party.
@@Atoll-ok1zm Hell, I took an online quiz even that was like a "Can you pass this American college-level Medieval history thing?" and figured, you know, I have been fascinated by history, and actively been a Medieval historical recreator, for several decades now; I've probably got a decent shot at this.
It was *hard;* I did not do well. But not because I didn't know my Medieval history, oh no. Because every damned question was only *nominally* about "Medieval European history," and *much* more using that as a loose tie-in to a question about the U.S.!!
A few *actual* questions I remember from it (may be paraphrased slightly):
-The "Unicorn Tapestry" is a famous English art piece. In which of these American museums is it currently displayed?
-The Black Death wiped out a third of Europe's population in the 1500's. Which American port city had an outbreak of the bubonic plague in the 1920's?
-Which American city was named for the French king who ruled from xxxx to xxxx, and was later canonized?
Like, seriously, I was able to guess most of them fairly accurately, just because they were multiple choice, and, like, for example, the option named for one of the multiple King Louises (St Louis) was pretty obvious.
But, please, what the FUCK does "Which American city has/experienced the same/a similar thing as this in the Twentieth Century" have to do with *Medieval* history?! And this was supposed to be *college/AP level* questions?!
Like, I know that these quizzes are just made-up bullshit and it probably doesn't have any relation to what is *actually* taught as "Medieval history" in the States (not an American myself, so no personal experience with it), let alone at the college level.
But please, could someone assure me that it was just that one stupid quiz, and that those type of questions are *not* representative of what the US education system is generally teaching as "history"? Because, like, I know perfectly well that the US tends to look at things from an exceedingly US-centric point of view. But dear lord, that was *ridiculous.* D:
@@KryssLaBryn I think your first mistake was "American medieval history". But yes most history classes tend to be very US centric though I've never seen one that bad. Idk why because US history is not very interesting even to an american. It can be summed up pretty well as just a lot of wars and racism.

Great Vid as always. Love that it's short and gets to the point. Keep it up!!!

That's true.
Anyone who is not investing now is missing a tremendous opportunity.
Yes. It's better to take risk and make sacrifices than to remain poor or settle for less..

Can the real Constitution be restored? Probably not. Too many Americans depend on government money under programs the Constitution doesn't authorize, and money talks with an eloquence Shakespeare could only envy. Ignorant people don't understand The Federalist Papers, but they understand government checks with their names on them.

The best way to have a proper democracy is to have proper education for ALL income levels.
And that's exactly why your ruling class doesn't want the poor's to have proper education

America: Spends half it's budget on the military
"Why are our schools failing?????"
More than half.
@Stephen Kizlik The only winners are Boeing and Lockeed-Martin
Look up the forgetting curve by Ebbinghaus and you'll immediately see why having so many standardized tests that are worth a huge percentage of your grade is actually a bad thing.
Most people are too stupid for school.
And school actively wasn't designed to help them.
Both of these factors come together to create an awful environment for growth and learning.

We better improve public education otherwise the conservative will destroy it

@@justaguy6216 You just want adoctrination
@@andraddya8447 Did you just try to say indoctrination? You should go back to school.
@@justaguy6216 Sorry, the corrector
How do you improve public education, when bad teachers are about as impossible to get fired, you are forced to go to the school in your district (No school choice), and performance-driven charter schools are blamed to be the boogeyman (despite having better student performance AND costing the government less)?
Seems to me like the public education needs an overhaul. It is anything but capitalist in its structure, because there is no meritocracy involved, to the detriment of the children.
Keep going guys!
In the tale of 2 school systems section, you talked about the Lower Merion school district. I actually go to a school here. And believe it or not, I have many friends from the city, many of whom go to the Philadelphia school district. I've heard them complain many times about how much homework they have, how little the teachers care sometimes, how little books and supplies they have, and other stuff mentioned in the video. Even my school has problems as well. My superintendent, Robert Copeland, has been trying to cram as many students in class as possible, even at COVID's peak. Very accurate and well-done video.

YOOOOOOOOO new gravel video, LETS GOOOOOOOO.
The fact that public schools are funded by property taxes has always been dumb to me. I always argued it in debate classes. I also just missed the no child left behind stuff entering high school in 2001. Seeing how many more tests younger friends take or how many my husband mentions his students take?! Yikes!!
The fact that property taxes even exist is dumb to me.
What is wrong with it though?
I was born in 2000 and I've taken at least one standardized test every year from 2nd-12th grade. By middle school, it was 2-3 standardized tests every quarter. By high school, it was 2-3 standardized tests a semester not including SAT prep or AP classes, of which I completed 6 by the time I graduated. Now, as a college student, I'll have to take the GRE if I want to go to graduate school, which is hopefully my last standardized test ever.
The worst part about them is that students are not graded based on how many questions they individually got correct, but how well they did in comparison to everyone else. I only got 4 questions wrong on the math portion of the SAT, and yet somehow that was a 720 out of 800 because thousands of students did better than me. Not to mention that the information being taught on these tests has little to no relevance to what students actually learn in class, and usually teachers have to detract from their normal curriculum weeks ahead of time in preparation for the standardized test. No Child Left Behind had good intentions, but the ramifications lead to stressed out students who view each other not as comrades who all want to be successful, but as direct competitors in a dog eat dog world. It's a stupid system and I hope it goes away for the next generation.
@@johnjonson2738 Basing school funding on property taxes creates an unequal education system b/c rich neighborhoods will always have more funding than poor ones. If we funded schools out of the general fund instead, it would be a *political* decision whether to overfund rich kid schools while underfunding poor kid schools (instead of a supposedly 'arbitrary' system where pols can claim it is out of their control). By making it a political decision, it would become a political issue; meaning people would vote for politicians who gave a damn about their kids and would vote out those who only fund the rich kid schools.
@@emperorzerg1138 Another way in which you are being robbed of an education is that because these tests are so constant, and because your teacher is graded on how well you do, teachers are incentivized to teach you how to pass a test not teach you how to learn.
