David Cross: Why America Sucks at Everything

- America: the greatest, richest, freest country in the world - or is it? David Cross, of Mr. Show, Arrested Development, and The Dark Divide, joins us to discuss why Americans, despite living in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, have a much worse standard of living than people who live in poorer countries. The "American Dream" isn't just dying: it's dead and buried. Cross tells us why.

As sad as this is, it's pretty comforting and a breath of fresh air when hearing other Americans admit we are flooded with inhumane flaws and are far from "the greatest country in the world". No matter what party we kiss up to, most of them are willfully out of touch with society and blame everyone BUT themselves for our declining living conditions. Every great thing in human history was built by slaves. The Great Wall, the Great Pyramid, the Colosseum, the United States of America, every empire ever; all built by slaves. I live in Australia. I was unemployed at the time, needed an MRI… got one, and it cost me nothing. Saved my life. Simple!
I took my father for an MRI about 5 years back, in Florida. There were about ten people in the waiting area. From what I could tell, two were from Canada, one from England, there was an Aussie and at least one other foreigner (from the far East, I don’t know specifics). So it appeared half the people waiting were from another country. From conversations, I learned that at least both Canadians and the Englishman had come to the US specifically because they wouldn’t be able to get the tests they needed at home in a timely matter. In short, they were afraid they wouldn’t get their tests done in time to help. This helped me realize there’s more to a quality healthcare system than who pays & how much.

I grew up in Norway. Tho, when I was a child I hated it here. I hated how It wasn’t like america. I used dream of being American, cause “everything is so good there, and it’s so popular. Unlike Norway, where everything is boring”. My view changed in 2020, when I saw how they treated the covid pandemic. How people didn’t get tested cause it was so expensive. And when I dived deeper into it, I learned how bad it was for people who where not white cis men.
I’ve never been to America, nor will I. As someone, who is not a white cis men, and is a minority, I fear what would happen if I go there. Or what would happens if I was born there.
The story of corona 19 in Norway.
March 8. No patients with corona at Norwegian hospitals. March 9. We have 2 patients, March 10. We have 9 patients. March 11th. We have 14 patients. On the same day, Denmark goes into lokkdown.
March 12 We have 29 patients in hospital and get our first death. And we went into lockdown. We were encouraged to stay at home until March 26. And work from home if they could. But there was no rule, some followed the advice, others did not.
The Prime Minister knows that in Norway there are 450 beds with equipment and personnel that can take corona patients, with relocation to other departments, and setting up tents, the capacity can be increased to close to 1,400 beds, but due to a lack of personnel, the places will not last longer than approx. 30 days and then with reduced quality. fortunately, we manage with the 450 beds. Of course, we have started with the tactics of infection tracking and quarantine. (Those in quarantine were called in sick.
That means 100% paid from day one. ) Because of the testing, we were ranked as the third worst country in the world, in terms of infection. In an interview, our Prime Minister made it clear that, should the worst happen, she was afraid that there would not be enough places in the hospitals. So she chose to put Norway in lokkdown, and hoped it could slow down the infection enough, so the hospitals managed the tasks they had ahead of them. There are later some who claimed that she acted in panic, but that is just nonsense.
Now we are going to travel very far north in Norway, to a city called Tromsø. There we meet a lady who is a Swedish nurse, but who has worked for many years in Tromsø municipality, and who is the manager of the five nursing homes they have there. There is a Swedish journalist who will interview her about Norwegian nursing homes and corona.
The headline in the newspaper was, 0 dead, 0 infected And in parentheses «You were too late» She was explaining that in Sweden there are 70 infection control doctors, but in Norway there are 356, there is one in each municipality, so the day Norway went to Lokkdown she got a plan by the infection control doctor, about what she should do. She also explained that on each shift, there was at least one nurse, and at the slightest suspicion of infection, protective equipment was on. After an hour, I clicked again on the Swedish online newspaper, and discovered "You were too late" had been removed. So there were probably some in the newspaper who thought this was too much criticism.
In 2020, we had 436 corona deaths. Excess mortality Minus 0.4 percent.
When the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) had to start a factory. They spent 10 days finding a method.

I've been to the US hundreds of times. I live north of them and every time I go there I can't wait to get home. Unsafe, poverty that should make them embarrassed in a country that wealthy, a gun cult that is frightening, Christianity that's as extreme as Saudi Islam. No thanks.
Where have you gone? If you stay out of the cities you'll be pretty safe.
My Grandfather visited a hospital in the US for kidney scan, thats it. He was there for 8 hours, they didn't listen to him, they asked him the same questions repeatedly, charged him for things he didn't receive. And then charged him $17,000.....in his own words "They're terrified they'll get a 2nd class service if they get free healthcare, but they're being charged a fortune and getting 3rd class healthcare!"
By contrast (UK), I cut my finger to the bone on a sharp tool at work, walked in, they took my name, I sat down, went into a room where they stitched my finger, I walked out, 20-30 minutes from entering to leaving, didnt cost me a penny.

Yep, same here in Canada. If you are hurt, you simply go to the hospital or a clinic, get treated and walk out. No money or invoices involved.
Same, i had septic shock and stayed at the hospital for almost two months with multiple doctors a day plus treatment outside the hospital for years after, and it didn't cost me shit here in Norway. We also get almost twice the American minimum wage if we don't want to or can't work for some reason. If i wanted i could quit work today and go to Thailand and live life with a high income by their standards🤷🏼♂️

And we would never live in Norway. Racist cesspool.

Too bad these people who claim to be so liberal and open-minded couldn't do the same for America. They can keep their Euro-snobbery, socialism, high taxes, EU interference, hate speech laws, high cost of living, and government-run healthcare with its associated shortages, rations, and long wait times for care, along with their social disapproval of self-confidence and an outgoing personality. When it comes to quality of life, standard of living, opportunities for advancement, REAL freedom, and an open, friendly attitude, America has it all over Norway.

Why people are breaking their necks to go the U.S to live with Americans is beyond me at this point.
Important to note these are people that are in squalor due to the US meddling in their internal politics since forever. It's not Europeans swimming to the US, it's central and South Americans who are in an even worse state. The US still maintains a economic blockade on Cuba, a country incapable of doing any harm to the US. They've sanctioned the shit out of Venezuela on behalf of US oil companies that lost their assets when Venezuela decided to nationalize their oil industry.
They propped up dictators in Chile. Funded cartels through the CIA in order to make off the books money that then were used to fund anti communist freedom fighters.
That these moves comes back to bite them in the ass is a long going tradition. Like the Boston marathon bombers who were Chechens. The US funded Chechens against Russia. But like the Taliban and other terrorists around the world, they dont take kindly to being used and so they turn their hate and bombs against the US.
The cartels are now organizing migrant caravans towards the US southern border as they have their own guys mixed in with the civilians.
So why are millions from western EU coming to the US?

You legend. I tip my hat upon hearing that reference, and I wish you a good day/night.
Americans are really nice, US is the country of hope and dreams, US uphold justice globally, US saved the world. This is what the United States propaganda and movies told the world. The world believe for some decades, other than the US victims.
But as information become more and more readily available, as more people travel globally. We realized that the good US is only in the movies and propaganda. The reality shows a stunning evil side of the United States regime, exactly opposite of what US preaches.
I traveled extensively around the world. I know the magnitude of potential and resources at the helm of the United States. I understand how much good It could have done for Americans and thus our world. That is why when all those resources are use for purposes not for global peace and development, I'm very upset.
When I mean stunningly evil US, I'm not talking about Americans. I'm talking about the US regime, which IMO works with top priority for US plutocrats.
With propaganda justified sanctions, US agencies instigated political unrests, US fund supported rebels and puppet governments, indirect and direct wars led by US. US regime caused the death of multi millions of innocent civilians. They destroyed the life of multi millions of people and still continuing to do so. They are causing multi millions of innocent people to live in sub-standard life. The real owners/controllers of US did all these not for global peace and development but to maintain US hegemony, to fulfil their greed of power and thus wealth for the few families.
I'm very disappointed and upset with all these because the wealth, resources and influence of the United States can be used to build excellent infrastructure, provide universal health care, give excellent education to the average Americans. The very influential media and hollywood could have influence more people globally to be peace loving, to have nice human values, to be less xenophobic and the whole world should together form a better world. But all these are not done in reality, what's done is very disappointing.
The only thing that still stands true is some of the Americans are really nice. In fact, the Americans together with the rest of the world, are victims of the US regime for the past decades.
This is why nowadays no one outside of US looks up to US anymore.

• Your healthcare isn’t even free you have to pay for it with higher priced taxes and in the U.S. healthcare is only $285 per month which is still better than living in Europe or Canada and paying thousands of dollars more on taxes, housing, fuel prices, and personal/house items, also about how the healthcare system wait time in Europe are much longer than they are in the U.S., plus in the U.S. the low income that can’t afford health insurance get Medicaid for free which will provide them with 100% free healthcare, plus the average monthly income in the U.S. is far higher than Europe and Canada. also Europe and Canada do not have as much freedom, they do not have freedom of speech since they will get arrested and fined thousands of dollars for saying anything the government doesn’t like, plus they don’t even have the bill of rights or constitution, the U.S. has way more freedom, and America did in fact create most of the things they use, UA-cam, the internet, phone/keypad they are using to type with are all American inventions.
• Since I'm not middle-class, thousands = all of my savings and I'm lucky because some people have no savings at all. In the USA the republicans warned everyone what would happen if they attempted universal healthcare. You people didn't listen. Now you want the super rich to fix that mistake by asking for more of what already didn't work for you. Do you have no regard for how that will affect the poor if it fails worse next time? The problem with progressive politics is it's completely dishonest. They say they are doing it all for the poor when logically it would follow that they would start with improving Medicare for THE POOR, not for ALL. Maybe it is only a small leap to them because they are afraid of becoming poor. But if you know poor people in the USA, they have healthcare. 92% of Americans are insured. Among the uninsured are people who have money but just don't want to pay. What ends up happening is Europeans are getting a distorted view of what life is really like over there. They think the hospital is allowed to refuse to treat someone in an emergency because they don't have their credit card with them. They don't know that in the event that you do go into debt from a medical bill, what happens is the hospital sells the debt to a collector and they call you every day or so to badger you into paying the bill. But they legally cannot take what you need to live.

*Clearly, you've never heard of "Press-Ganey"? We have veeb a commoditized service for a couple of decades now, where your pay is tied directly to customer satisfaction surveys on EVERY patient! It started while I was still in medical school in the late 70's ["DRGs"], and by 2005, it was a done deal. Medicine is an awful way to try and make a living now, and LOTS of docs have abandoned both their practices, and the idea that they would help their kids go to med school. Most of us are willing to pay for anything **_except_** medical school, since we know what's actually happened to medicine. It's not only a "consumer service" now, complete with both daily satisfaction surveys and post discharge satisfaction surveys, but the actual "practice" has changed drastically too! There is no longer any continuity of care: we may eat what we kill, but we are extremely unlikely to actually follow "our" own patients through their stay. Instead, a different doc each day will pick up the chart and work the day - a terrible way to treat a patient!*
*Medicine is close to a loss financially as well. When I was [finally] a PGY-III, I looked into what it was going to take to practice in the different settings. As a community practitioner, I need a census of around 2500-3500 patients. Today, thats between 5000 and 7500, depending on how you're doing it. Of course, that assumes you don't decide to just sidestep CMS completely (as MANY of us have done by opening "Boutique Practices"). Telling CMS to pound sand allows you to come very close to the old fee for service model, without having 5-8 staff who do nothing but fight with insurance companies all day!*

Ikr, it's so mind-boggling. I dislike the Tories with a passion, but after seeing how bad the Republican Party is in America, I have a newfound appreciation for them.
@@illegitimateotaku794 bro I wish the worst right-leaning people we had we’re just Tories
US Right-Wing: Socialism always leads to tyranny!
US "Progressives": Well, what about (insert European country)?
US Right-Wing: That's not socialism.
US "Progressives": Okay. Well, we want social programs like (same European country).
US Right-Wing: That's socialism!
Dudes I love some things about the US, but healthcare puts me off of even visiting. Here in Hungary (!) for $25 a month you get healthcare and you get everything you need from dental to surgeries to a medical helicopter that takes you in if you have an emergency in a remote place. Btw the $25 is by default paid for every worker by their employee and healthcare is free for kids, students and pensioners.
I heard England's national Healthcare is now unsustainable (too expensive). It still exists, but their Parliament is debating on moving to a different system. Probably bc the upperclass sees how much $$$$ Healthcare is paying to its owners.
Yes and many people are coming back to continental europe. UK is following US example (third world)

Homelessness is skyrocketing here in my area a fruitful suburb of Seattle. Lots of them have jobs but can’t afford rent as corporations build and buy on a scale never seen before. They must’ve put up 500 apartment units in one project alone but they’re asking $2500-$3k a month. Minimum wage is $15 but nobody in construction gets paid more than like $30. I’m so fed up barely holding on myself.
It’s the government policies not corporations. Stop voting for the disease and blaming the side effect on the cure.
The way health works in Australia is great. The more you earn the more tax breaks you get for having your own insurance and deal within the private system. The idea is to get people back on their feet and working (paying taxes!) and not have them go bankrupt and unemployed over an illness/injury.
You missed an important part. If you earn over a certain amount and do not have health insurance, then you get to pay a larger Medicare levy. The design is to get the well off paying for their health insurance and leaving Medicare for those who cannot afford health insurance.
Im from Germany. The only problem I have is convincing myself to go to the doc when I need too, but I never have to think twice about the money it will cost me. Poor America. Sorry for you.
Eh the only difference is, in America it’s good to be a hard-working person, in Germany it’s good to be I’m not a hard-working person.
If you average a classes grades together the stupid kids will see an increase in their grades, where smart kids will see a decrease, simple as that

In the Philippines, I don't have insurance, but can still afford or get a free health care.. yes my country may be a third-world country, but I can go to any hospital anytime without worrying for my bills.
What about other South East Asian countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand are they third world countries?
@@wanahmad7100 Indonesia is pretty bad. Lots of corruption on all government levels and the military still is a threat lurking in the background. I'm tired of just knowing about this. We all need to do something.
I know! I don't understand how this system is screwing over everybody except the rich, and we as citizens just put up with it. It makes no sense.
