"it's 2020 and we're just getting started"
If you only knew the POWER of that statement
This was the comment I was looking for.
Sounds like one of Nintendo's innovations with partnering up with Immersion is the whole "not getting lawsuited over it" part :P
Nah, they have their own patent for it.
Object : rumbles
Emersion : wait that's illegal
13:37 Stop Skeletons From Snacking.
Catterjee leet snacks
That l33t, tho.
The fact that WarioWare: Twisted can be used as a rumble pak just BLEW MY MIND. I had bought a DS rumble pak separately but I didn't like it because it was too intense. I'm excited to hear that the Twisted pak is less so.
14:20 "2020's just getting started"...yeah, that phrase has not aged gracefully...
I remember when the N64 Rumble Pak came out with “Starfox 64”. Since I had had an NES and SNES, my mom got me an N64 when I was in high school. I remember being blown away by the Rumble Pak with “GoldenEye”! Rumble is standard now but it was just this crazy immersive experience back then.
Same here, my friend got a 64 and WaveRace, the feedback genuinely felt like the jetski hitting the waves back then. It really added another level of realism.
@@Gayestskijumpever You are either misremembering or did your friend actually import the Japanese rumble version of Wave Race 64?
@@Tempora158 maybe he was living in Japan? Less likely, but possible.
Mario Kart 8's HD rumble does the coin collecting noise on the controller when you get them. Blew my freaking mind when I noticed. Also it's a different chime when it's rupees.
NEET stands for "Not in Education, Employment, or Training" and is often used to insult people. Not sure if they named that snack box because it's "neat" as you say, or if they're directly stating their target audience. XD
It's pretty blatantly intentional.
In Mexico they call them Ninis. Ni estudia Ni trabaja. Translated to He/she doesn't go to school, he/she doesn't work.
DISNEY
A really really REALLY awesome Easter egg with HD Rumble is in Kirby Star Allies.
Once you have beaten the game and unlocked the final FINAL level.
When you reach the end of the level and initiate a certain sequence (you know) you can actually listen to the Joycons and it will play the Kirby theme, and it's really damn cool! I had goosebumps the whole level and only to realize my Joycons were emitting a small tune, I had to replay the level to truly listen to it and it seriously made me cry from nostalgia.
My aunt told me that when i was a kid and i got a controller with rumble functions she went to my house and stood up all night playing
She never was that much into games either, she just was so amazed she got hooked up
;)
Uh... huh. All night, you say? I guess "hooked up" is one way to put it.
@@jasonblalock4429 aprox 6 to 10 hours, wasn't old enough to stay up late (and pretty sure i didn't have much reason either if she was hogging the console) so i can't tell exactly other than the fact that she slept until 2PM
@@rompevuevitos222 got her rockz off...
Btw, that Lumines rumble is kinda crazy, I started it up with rumble set on high and I swear my hands were going to fall off.
i'd always get tingle hands after playing for a while
@@solidus4prez Kooloo-Limpah!
I'll just... see myself out.
And it also makes so much extra noise.
okänd
I kinda like the noise. It adds to the music in my opinion.
Fun fact about the Gameboy Player logo: the software on the GameCube actually uses this screen to detect if it needs to poll the game to communicate GameCube controller support - and the polling is pretty much the GameCube pressing a load of buttons super rapidly (including impossible buttons like Left+Right at the same time)
that's super interesting, any idea if emulators with tool-assisted input could reproduce the same effect?
@@TrystanDavis emulators that detect Gameboy Player do exactly this, however they cheat a bit: rather than checking the display for the logo they check to see if the memory matches known setups display the logo in various commercial games, which unfortunately means simply displaying the logo isn't enough for these emulators, you have to display it using the exact same set up as one of these commercial games
NEET - short for 'Not in Education, Employment or Training' and is used to describe people who are lazy/do not want to work. It was first mentioned in Japan in 2004 by social psychologists and quickly spread out with the release of the books written about NEETs
TIL that NEET is an acronym. Thanks!
Huh. That makes me a little worried about how Japan treats those who _can't_ work, rather than don't want to.
Neat!
Just like how I like my whiskey: Neat!
*Welcome to the NHK music intensifies*
Reminder however that they are trying to take care of the hikikomori problem, as it is getting worse and worse every year.
[SPOILER ALERT!] Best use of HD rumble: the Kirby theme song rumbled at the end of Kirby Star Allies. It was so good it almost made me cry [/SPOILERS]
If you put the joycons on a table or box, the rumble actually makes the song AUDIBLE from the vibrations
Gourmet race?!
That took me by surprise, more usage like that needs to happen. Maybe in a horror game
It honestly felt like magic when that happened.
HOW DID SSFF FORGET THIS?!
10:32 and what about Microsoft deciding to put haptic feedback in the triggers?
And now according to revealed details the PS5 is gonna rip of both the switch and xbone by having its own HD rumble and haptic feedback triggers
MK3424 IMO one of the most underrated features of the Xbox One controller.
I personally have all wireless controllers with rumble deactivated to save battery but keep the rumble enabled for Forza games. It is great to feel the car losing traction and such...
Yeah thought so too. Only point in the video where I was like "wait! Xbox one Rumble is different than before!"
Came here to say this.
The Xbox One actually did do something unique with rumble; they put small rumble motors in each trigger to create "Impulse triggers," working in addition to the standard rumble motors in the handles. They rumble with the rest of the controller normally as well, but developers could also choose to support the feature by specifically activating the Impulse Triggers independently, like during gunfire or driving sequences
The use of HD Rumble in Golf Story must be experienced to be appreciated. They even managed to create some funny sound effects coming out of the controller, to compliment what's happening on the screen!
Super Mario Party does a similar thing where the joycon vibrates out a cute little jingle when it's your turn, it's very subtle but a neat little touch
Golf Story is a goddamn masterpiece, especially in the departments of storytelling, comedy, and conveying an immersive narrative through text only by using animated speech bubbles along with what you mentioned.
@@EvilApple567 yes it is. i cannot wait for Sports Story. hell i may replay Golf Story again before it comes out. those sportscasters were savage as hell
Kirby Star Allies plays the green greens theme
The best part of all this is EASILY the tangents. Their honesty is refreshing.
I love Grace's additions to the show. Also snack time with Derek is pretty rad
The best use of the HD rumble on the Switch is Senran Kagura: Reflections
Fuck you
my nigga
And Dead or Alive xtreme 3 scarlett
Celeste uses it for telling you hoe much stamina you have.
Kirby Star Allies
I remember when Nintendo showed off the Switch for the first time and then started talking in depth about the "HD Rumble" and everyone rolled their eyes, expecting the Switch to be the end of consoles for Nintendo. Then HD Rumble was awesome and so was the Switch soooo
ngl it sucked on the Steam controller and it sucked again on Switch controllers
9:41 I wonder if we're so old and it's been long enough, a little over 18 years so older than some watchers here, that maybe gamers might not get this reference but that's for real a thing that happened.
There was a (awesome if you're into EDM and club music) game called Rez that, when it first came out on PS2, had a "trance vibrator" that you were SUPPOSED to put in your pocket or wrist or sit on top of. And when the pretty ladies OF LEGAL AGE SO NOT KIDS (my disclaimer) in the audience discovered that sitting on it did... stuff to them, they started using it for other means than what it was intended for.
If anyone is curious, you can google around information about it or read Wired's piece on it for the 15th anniversary of the device.
www.wired.com/2017/01/rez-vibrator-womens-sexuality/
Well, they were legal in at least one country.
He never said "ARE YOU READY TO RUMMMMMBBBLLLLEEE!!!!!" smh
Angus Beef probably because that phrase is copyrighted and he doesn’t want to get in trouble
Don't sleep on HD rumble, I've seen some indies really make their games stand out, the one mini-game in Mario Party is amazing at highlighting the true extent of HD rumble and the secret Kirby song will probably startle you and leave you wondering if you imagined it
The haptic feedback on the Switch is amazing. I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and the rumble compliments stuff like when you're doing skillchecks; if you succeed, the rumbles *feel* like a happy little "*ding*~!", but the "failure" rumbles feel dissonant in a very specific way. It's not just vibrations, they get a lot of specific moods out of how those Joycons rumble.
There's another GBC cart that had rumble in it: Rhino Rampage! I remember Tips And Tricks Magazine once talking about the challenges in collecting it; it came packed with a free AAA battery for its built-in rumble feature, but over time the batteries started leaking. So collectors had to choose between opening their copies and taking out the battery, lessening the MIB value to keep it from getting drastically worse, or leaving the battery in and praying the game didn't get *too* badly damaged by the battery leak.
I love Derek and Grace, these videos are so fun!
Important, life changing information for you Ninfriendos! You can easily mod the Rumble Pak to work without batteries, it's a super easy first soldering project. You don't need any material besides a soldering iron and some solder.
That feeling of still owning an original Sixaxis PS3 controller. I never knew a difference until now when I hold my Dualshock 3 controller.
A friend had one & kinda liked how much lighter it is.
You're videos are always a delight Mr. Fighting, Stop S. F.
Thank your effort and hard work.
Both you and Grace have such good delivery and banter. Love having you guys talking about all the ridiculous history and ambition of the world of gaming.
"Yeah, It Should Of Had A Lovely Lady Lump On That Goal."
Me: Dead! 😂💀
Yo Derek, I just found your channel! I am an old fan of you and Calvin from back in the "The Power of Science Is Staggering" and "Zoom Zoom Internet days". I loved all of your work and podcasts and would even sometimes catch one of your streams every now and then. You guys got me through some really tough times in high school and every time you would post a new podcast or album, it brought a little bit of light into those days when I really needed it. And then when you guys made Scoops the Robot, I could really tell and feel proud in how you guys improved your craft and matured. And it kept going from there. IDK where I am going with this, but I just wanted to share a little love and am very happy to have found your channel! Easy sub. See you around! :)
13:39 Stop Derek From Snacking
If remember the lack of rumble and when Sony claimed it was last gen.
Aged well. They made a big deal about PS5's HD rumble.
MAAAAAAAAAAAN I didn't know the gameboyplayer logo functionality thing! I just thought it was a brand logo when I was a kid and never made the association! Thanks for the wonderful content SSFF! I love you Derek and Grace!
NEET snacks? Do they have chicken tendies?
Stop Skeletons from Snacking.
The Xbox One/Xbox Series actually did do something unique with rumble. There are motors inside the triggers that can be activated separate from the main motor for haptic feedback. My personal favorite uses of it are in Outlast, where during a specific scene later in the game your character has their index finger sawed off and the right trigger simulates the bone cracking, and when you're charging up an energy weapon in Halo you can feel a pulsating rumble in both triggers.
Very happy to see another video. I was legitimately worried the channel was disappearing this year after the video in September.
You guys are great!
Honestly. All the rumbles feel the same
That Star Fox promo from Nintendo Power was the best.
"Peter!? You didn't tell them about... the *Rumble Pak* did you?"
"No... Bob. _You_ just did!"
Talks about sponsorship :
ABSOLUTELY SLAYS EVERY PRODUCT IN IT.
Hah I love your videos man xD
The steam controller had the hd rumble before the switch even launched
True that, but it's not for a console, so I guess that's why it was not talked about.
@@CommodoreFan64 it depends on how loosely you define a console because they were originally for steam machines, he did also mention the iPhone in relation to this so he probably just forgot. I don't blame him I think a lot of people forgot about the steam controller.
@@ArtemisMaxs The Steam machines where just off the shelf PC parts put in custom OEM cases with Valve's own Linux distro based on Debian. Also you can try to make that argument that a console like the OG Xbox did the same, but it did enough different like the clock capacitor, firmware, etc.. that it can't really be used as a normal desktop style PC.
Getting TB flashbacks from the "ad". Loved those videos where Genna forced him through snacks he mostly hated xD. RIP Biscuit!
Fun fact. The N64 Rumble Pak can work without batteries by bridging a few pins. Nintendo made batteries a requirement because they worried 4 Rumble Paks could short the N64
Can the N64 power 4 rumble paks at once when modded like that?
I'm so glad they talked about rumble features via the Gamecube Gameboy Player. I've always found it interesting that Nintendo has three different pinball games on three different systems that all have rumble options. Oh, Derek didn't know about that? *smug smile*
"And you can use Warioware Twisted as a DS rumble cartridge!"
WHAAAAAT? REAAAALY?
I had no idea, but I can't wait to try it, lol.
Completely unrelated to anything in this video, I LOVE that a music clip from Tomba made it into this video around minute 4. Thanks for the video Derek,Grace, and crew!
Haptic feedback was also used in the Steam Controller to make it create virtual track ball feedback and other odd things but it's never used in games with special programing like Nintendo does.
Rumble on Switch is good in some pinball games too though some pinball games have really lazy rumble.
SSFF has released a video! My day has automatically improved
Love this series. You’re the man.
I have two original ps3 controllers and i hate them lol
Two people can play Lair! What’s not to like about that???
I prefer no rumble. It is way too much exept in NS games. So no problems for me
@RJ Cox My issue is more with how extreme the rumble is on PS4 and later PS3 controllers. HD rumble is a blessing though
@RJ Cox Not precisely the problem but I'd like if there was an option to just control the intensity of it. At least to my experience, you can just turn it on or off. I don't remember much, I was young back then.
In the few PS4 games I have, in all them the rumble is super agressive and *every other action has it atached.* Mad Max, driving in slightly rocky terrain, the controller trembles like and fing earthquake. Charging in the Spyro remakes, controller fing trembles. Good thing I can turn that shit off.
In Switch games rumble is not only it is much softer but if feels apropiate when it does. Like the fishing in the Link's Akakening remake. There is a mild touch of rumble with small fish and it is much stronger with harder to catch fish, and even at that point it is nonewhere close to as agressive as the rumble on PS4
@RJ Cox The only racing game I play are the MK ones
The rest feel boring to me
Damnit Derek! I never click on the bell for anything, but that rumble the bell bit gave me a dumb smile. Bell has officially been rumbled on my end
Long time watcher, first time commenter. I love the channel, & everything you guys do, but what I really want to say is that this is the first time I've seen someone really make the sponsored content look cool & natural! Normally I skip right past the sponsored parts, but Derek really makes me feel like he's giving his honest opinion about the snack pack, instead of just telling me it's good even if he feels it's really mediocre. Any sponsors reading this should totally endorse this channel! Great content, great hosts, it's a no-brainer! Keep up the good work, y'all!!
I love you guys. I never knew your channel existed until a couple months ago and I just love it.
Make a Patreon tier where I can go grab a beer with you two.
The videos just keep getting better! Great job derek and grace
"2020 is just getting started" Unkie Derek
Gonna watch this video a couple of times to get as many ads as possible. Thank you for the upload, guys!
Great video. I had pokemon pinball when I was a kid and it was one of my go to GBC games when I just wanted to zone out after school. It had a really neat catching mechanic that was addictively fun.
Y'all are the best, informative and fun
The joy cons can actually make different sounds with the HD rumble
damn you were spot on! PS5 DualSense has an HD rumble!
Punching Weight, Japanese Corner and Snack Time all in 1 video?! The channel is off to a great start in 2020!
I had no idea about the rumble patent lawsuits, guess this video really SHOOK my perspective about rumble features in video games!
This series represents everything I love about Nintendo and has become a favorite channel to watch the vids are varry informative thank you
"Rumble The Bell And Wrestle The Thumb."
That should be a new thing for only SSFF! 😄😁👍
1:38 that moment when you realize the two of you have LITERALLT EVERYTHING IN COMMON
Best use of HD Rumble was in Kirby Star Allies, they somehow used HD RUMBLE to make the controllers to play Kirby's theme.....MAGIC
4:08 Am I the only who finds the phrase "Super Wide Gear" unexplainably hilarious?
SSFF actually means "Sega Saturn's French Fries"
Derek: they're all so small, except the Genesis controller, yeah that's a thicc boy right there, damn Genesis controller, damn!
I laughed more than I should have lol! 😂😂😂
That whole thing about "making portable games bulky," honestly kind of makes sense to me, because I've never seen someone pull a GameBoy or a DS out of their pocket, raw. There's always been some kind of protective case with room for other games
No love for the Steam controller and its dual haptic feedback bits that could play music? The Steam Controller was a totally weird piece of tech and might be worth checking out.
love your vids. Brings back so many memories for this 38 year old guy
I want a series where Derek & Grace just review snacks from around the world!
Best use of HD rumble for me is Pinball FX3, you can feel the ball bounce on each flipper. One of the few games I opted to get on the Switch rather than pc. It also lets you play the game in handheld portrait mode which is fantastic for pinball.
And you forgot to mention the best part of HD Rumble. Because it works like a speaker, it can play music. Super Mario Party uses it to let you know it’s your turn. It’s quiet, but noticeable if you listen.
Derek: I love video games.
Also Derek: Video games are dumb.
In my opinion, if you can't roast it, you don't really love it.
"I love video games"
"Video games are dumb"
Roughly 47% of UA-cam summed up in two sentences.
SSFF, you forgot to mention that if your using a Wavebird there’s no rumble on the Gameboy Player because the Wavebird has no Rumble Motors.
I found the snack eating oddly comforting. I DEMAND MORE SNACK EATING! Stop Skeletons From Snacking.
The Trigger Rumble in the XboxOne controller and the haptic feedback of the SteamController would have been nice.Maybe in some form of follow up
It is badass in Lumines on Switch. With the music being so key to the gameplay, it's crazy that you can actually play with the console on Mute, but the vibration gives you a genuine feel for the music playing. Crazy and so impressive.
Derek just went in on that sponsorship and didn’t give one of those snacks a five lmao
I wasnt ready for this to become a mukbang video, Derek
Great vid ad always :)
Keep up the good work Derek and Grace
yo props to shelby! i don't know what you did but clearly it was something good!
It’s always a good day when SSFF uploads.
3:15 Microsoft strategically licensed the Immersion "tech" to set precedent. Then immediately bought stake in Immersion so Microsoft could profit from making Sony and others pay royalties.
XB1 put vibration in the triggers, now the ps5 controller will have that feature too. Its only really useful in racing games cause it helps you feel the car sliding but still can't say the xbox 1 didn't do much for rumble if sony and microsoft are gonna use the feature going forward.
Golf Story's use of the HD Rumble really was fantastic. Probably the most fun use of it I've seen on the Switch, even getting it to make little sound effects like the ball falling in a hole.
I don't really think I've played any games that used it better, honestly (Haven't played 1-2 Switch, as it just seems like an expensive tech demo). Does anyone know of any other interesting uses not mentioned in the video?
Final Fantasy X HD has amazing HD Rumble. When Yuna summons, the rumble is customized to each Aeon.
It’s turned off by default…
The about of haptic feedback possible now is phenomenal when you take into account that a good portion of games are natively mixed in a minimum of 5.1/7.1 channels with quite a few being natively encoded in 7.1.4 Atmos channels. With the .1 LFE channel in addition to sending all 120hz and below content (you can adjust the LPF filter on your AVR or pre/pro but the bandwidth is widely accepted as 10hz-120hz) all you need to add is a bass shaker or actuator powered by its own power amplifier and soon you’ll be feeling tactile feedback down to 10hz. It’s exponentially cheaper than buying subwoofers that are capable of meaningful output into the subsonic region as many companies make frequency response claims but these are done in either anechoic or semi anechoic chambers and exponentially different in each individual small room they’re placed in. I mean for $200 you can get a Buttkicker Gamer complete with the bass shaker and power amp or for around $400 you can get the larger LFE unit with a power amp. For comparison in terms of retail prices you won’t find a subwoofer that has 85-95dB output down past 15hz for below $1000 and at that point SVS and HSU are your only option unless you take into account DIY subs but that’s a whole different wormhole. I run two Buttkicker LFE’s paired with 4 SVS SB16 Ultra’s all controlled by a pair of MiniDSP 2x4HD’s and the low frequency tactile feedback is absolutely amazing. While quite expensive for the entire setup, and that’s not including the 16 channel Storm Audio processor, speakers, power amps, cables, UMIK-1 USB calibration microphone and the countless hours I’ve spent calibrating it all, it provides an assault on the senses that just simply wasn’t possible using the older native two channel PCM gaming sources.
I realized the patreon version doesn’t have sponsor content in it, which makes sense. I enjoyed watching this a second time and seeing you eat snacks at the end XD
I guess you could say seeing all those snacks made my stomach... RUMBLE (omg I’m sorry)
The amount of Tomba music featured in these videos warms the heart
Great vid^^
The main use I ever had out of the rumble pak involved the hidden locations in Ocarina of Time that you could find by putting a bomb on top of areas where the controller was vibrating. It was mostly just for small rewards though.
That joke at 1:15 just earned you a sub.
hi derek, great videos, I hope you still make this videos in the future by the way im looking for a n64 peripheral that was attached to the controller and i know it wasn't the rumble or memory card it was long and had a screen that had red number ranging from 1 to 32 i think and 2 buttons to adjust the numbers, i had it wen i was kid and didn't know for what it was for.
I vividly remember Sony making the bogus claim that since the SIXAXIS was all about those gyro motion controls, you would never want that vibration interfering with the movement, plus being overall dismissive of everyone who missed the feature, until the moment they brought it back.
I got so scared by the Psychomantys trick that I ran off my room screaming when he did that (it was my first experience with rumble controllers xD)
