You guys requested, and I've answered! The Power of Goodbye continues Madonna's addictive sounds. But most importantly I consider it a sequel to FROZEN find out why!

This album was a giant hit she won Grammies , I remember waiting outside in a long line to get this album
I bought the album first thing in the morning and was on a plane within the hour. My two week trip turned into a two-three month trip of self discovery post divorce with this album as my soundtrack. My therapy.
It's definitely a sequel to to Frozen. In Frozen she says You're frozen when your heart's not open and the first line in The power of good-bye is Your heart is not open..
and both songs are MASTERPIECES

It's the ballads that get me every time! I love her as a brunette.
The layers of sound here work beautifully, accompanied by her amazing vocals. The video is a work of art with multiple symbols. I love the ocean effect throughout, the colors, the shapes in her jewelry, chess pieces, beach light. And the wave treatment edit. Her stunning look is on another level.

One of the few songs by Madonna that I honestly can say I love. It hits me on and emotional and gut level. Vocals are beautiful, instrumentals sweep you away.
There are two more videos/songs left from Ray Of Light album that you NEED to see right the way: “Drowned World/Substitute for Love” & “Nothing Really Matters”. I’m sure you’re gonna love them.
In fact... you should listen to the hole album, its a jewel, its a zephyr, its a journey you should take.

Madonna's ballads are just beautiful. Fun fact the man that plays her love interest in this video is Goran Višnjić a Croatian actor. He was on the tv show ER, also in Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock and Sandra Bullock.

William Orbit's synth, Madonna's sensitive voice, string arrangements with instrumental solo and acoustic guitar. Her most beautifull, but also sad song.
This song proves Madonna is a great songwriter. The producer William Orbit did a wonderful job creating sensitive electronic sound.

Your intelligent insight on this masterpiece is spot on! You definitely “get” her! It’s refreshing to know younger generations are discovering this true living legend’s art, WAY beyond the “pop” Queen that she is! Other pop artist you “hear”, & thats fine. But Madonna’s music you “feel”! She’s one heck of a songwriter!

Very astute review. What you might be interested to learn is that "Power of Goodbye" came after "Frozen" on the Ray of Light album. When we first listened to it, we listened to it and had a sucker punch one-two. And this two-thirds of the way through an already masterful album.
You need to review "Nothing Really Matters" and "Drowned World/Substitute For Love" from the same album when you next do a Madonna review.
her music with William Orbit is all sensational. He has that very distinct sound & it matches Madonna perfectly. Her voice is never given great credit but on all her ballads she sounds absolutely gorgeous.

Powerful song. The producer William Orbit is phenomenal (he also produced the song Pure Shores by All Saints - which was used in the film The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio). He was so ahead of his time in the 90s - his edgy use of marine sounds.. dolphins, whales.. electronic slides, in and out pulses almost like sonar .. You knew it was his unique work instantly.
I often listen to Orbit's chill-out versions of classical songs on his album Pieces in a Modern Style, particularly his version of the classical piece Pavane.
Lyrically The Power of Goodbye is just amazing, first class:
"The spell has been broken, I loved you so. You were my lesson I had to learn.. I was your fortress". Just brilliant.
Can we talk about the imagery? Love the pale green-blue. Such a vibe, visually and sonically!

Back then this sound was so futuristic, now it’s nostalgic and it makes me cry for the time that has passed. This is one of my favourite songs of all time and Ray of light album is probably best pop album of all time.

@Marvin Morawski I totally agree with you but these two younger vloggers, i follow, did a reaction vlog on this vid and those words were said during their analysis after. (DanDTV). I guess younger generation just expect the extra sexualized party anthem songs Madonna is known for. But others like us see the beauty in all her work. Mind you i personally didnt like the Madame X phase. But i did still thanked them for exposing her to the younger generation😁

It's great she did Evita before this album, she had a lot of vocal training, she would never have been able to sing most songs from this album if it wasn't for all the voice coaching she had to star in Evita...
Spare us the stupid condescending lecture on her voice. Madonna covered Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" BEFORE she took vocal lessons for Evita and that was one hell of an amazing performance from her.

Dereck. I don't remember this song becoming a hit back in 1998-1999 however I believe now in 2020 this song is greatly appreciated . This song means a lot to me , since I met my current partner in 1998, we are still together and this is one of our favorite songs as a couple. I love the video, the instrumentation, Madonna looks. This is one of her most interesting videos, it´s full of symbolism from Buddhism.
The song is about letting go and stop insisting on something that´s already gone. The power of goodbye is the power of letting go the demons you carry with you. They want to be free. So you have to let them go to be free yourself.
Now, about the video: chess is an obvious methaphor for their relationship. Like a battlefield. And when she throws all the pieces that's an actual chess move called "kicking the board". When the player knows he already lost and there's no chance to win he can kick the board. The song goes that way in the lyrics, about not having anything left to lose or try.
Then Madonna comes down to the shore and submerges herself into the ocean, leaving her shoes behind, and re-emerging on the other shore. This is a direct reference to a buddhist idea of crossing the ocean, or the river, letting your backpack of demons behind (in this case her shoes symbolizes that), being washed off from your pain, and re-emerge on the other shore renewed, reborn, with your past behind and your future ahead.
This is the most intelligent, well thought video reaction I’ve seen so far. Thank you for this you did great and very interesting to hear your analogy of a stunning song by a stunning woman x

I thought it was inspired by the Joan Crawford film, Humoresque, especially the walking on the beach scene.
All the songs on 'Ray of Light' are a feast for the ears--together take you on a journey. I think you'll also like the two albums that followed: "Music" and "Confessions" albums, which layer electronic sounds masterfully.
