    Very imformative editing, how ever i would love to share a bit from my experiment.
    This shot you mention im called it as a fraction, as it do nothing or similar with side on its physics, a static ball often have 2 scenarios when we try to move them, 1 a grip from your chalk on your cue tip and 2 a cloth on snooker baize, this booth have a friction, if you do experiment by draw tru a cue ball right at centre slowly you will notice ball try to escaping side by side instead of rolling this make the shot not accurate deliver to intended path.
    Now try to draw tru cue ball slowly but this time with a little fraction of side, you will notice the ball move much straighter, this is because forcing a ball to roll upon impact tru a cue ball will reduce drag force and eliminate error on every shot.
    There are another way to reduce this drag force on a cue ball if you a centre ball player which is by applying scooping on your cueing technique, (look similar like ronnie cue action) but it vary tricky to master..
    Experiment it by place a cue ball and then raise up your bridge hand, then scoope a cue ball slowly, you will notice the drag force eliminate.
    I did this experiment for already over 1 year, tested on multiple table and my conclution
    1) a fraction of side does make shot more accurate to intended path.
    2) a shot with fraction of side wont take effect of spin when hitting a cusion, it should cancel out, if it spin then you have apply it wrong or to much of side.
    3) à scoope shot will cancel out drag force without applying side, however its very difficult to mastering it.
    4) side should be apply only when you going to hit a cusion rail or change the angle of cue ball and mostly player use for escaping or far positioning.

    Hi Steve, I love your idea about setting yourself a little test to gauge your ability. It would be fascinating if you could devise other tests to measure higher levels of ability. I think it would be very motivating to try to work your way up the various levels. Also it would set realistic expectation levels. So if a player was, for example, a 'mid level' standard then they wouldn't beat themselves up for not getting 100 breaks. (me!) Plus it would help them understand how much improvement was needed in order to realistically expect 100 breaks. Does that make sense? "The Barton Scale". I can see it now!

      If i may ask a question Steve, love your videos by the way, using helpful side feels very natural and when getting used to it and allowing for it becomes easier etc…..However if you wanted to pot a high black for example using helping RH side but instead needed to use LH side for a particular positional shot it (check side?) it seems a lot harder for some reason? The check side seems to have a more/ deflective etc effect on the shot outcome. Is that just me or a peculiar fact?

    Was looking forward to see this topic from you, great, thank you!
    So I did really incorporate this helping side into my game after playing plain ball for about 10 years. It feels more natural for exactly the two reasons you explained.
    I am currently at the stage to figure out at which small angels I should stop playing side because at some point the ball is to straight and the helping side kicks the white ball out of the line.
    Then I am experimenting with the amount of helping side vs the distance between white and OB.
    And since I am playing the helping side I now discover how important it is to incorporate the direction of the nap.
    Another topic is when the WB is on the cushion. Do the Pros play helping side when they are tight on the cushion? I mean, if it's hard to find the middle with the hand on the table, then it feels utopian to find the middle on the ball against the cushion.

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  9 місяців тому +2

      You're right.. tight on the cushion no side is played. You just try and hit the middle of the cue ball. That's mostly because top and side is very hard to judge. The curve that the cue ball does happens quickly and it's very hard to judge. So mostly we avoid that.

    I prefer playing little traces of side with every shot myself. (It's been a habit I think from a very young age) I kinda play it in a way where I'm placing my cue in the direction of travel that I'm looking for... so a subtle stun shot from the black for a red just above the black spot, I'll place my cue towards 4 O'Clock (about half the width of my tip) which is the direction I want the cue ball to travel and land nicely for the next red. Although it technically doesn't effect the white, it's a psychological habit in which it makes me feel comfortable in directing the white. And because it's only a psychological thing, if I wanted to actually play with side with actual results, then of course I would place my cue further from the centre.

    This could have some similarities to golf, as very rarely do players not fade or draw the ball so they can allow for it, if you purposely put slight side on every shot you shouldnt put unwanted side on

  • @MattLloydTube
    @MattLloydTube 9 місяців тому +2

    I'd already heard some pro's accept they have a low chance of hitting the exact centre so instead play a bit of side on every shot. What I don't quite understand is, surely they have no more precision over exactly where on the right or left of cue ball they hit either. (I.e. if say you would have 90% accuracy at hitting direct centre, surely you also have 90% accuracy of hitting the exact intended amount of side as well - as opposed to slightly less or more side than you intended). So I don't understand how it's any different in that regard?? Is it because the difference between 4mm and 5mm to the right, for example, somehow has less of an impact as compared to direct centre and 1mm to the right..? If that makes sense. Thanks!

    • @victors3803
      @victors3803 9 місяців тому +1

      There is little difference whether you hit a cue ball through the center or with a helping side.
      But!! If you occasionally hit it 1mm an opposite side, you will miss.
      In your words when you cut the ball to the left it is the same to hit the cueball into the center, 1 mm to the right, 2 mm to the right and even 3mm to the right.
      But if you occasionally hit the cue ball with only 1mm a left side you will miss.
      It is the opposite side to a helping side is what players are afraid!
      That is why players prefer to aim helping side 1mm away from the center, because if the miss to the left or right it will still be a helping side or a center of the cue ball thus meaning they will pot the ball anyway.
      But if you aim into the center you have a chance to hit the cueball into the opposite side. And even 1mm there will give you a miss.
      I hope i explained it. English is not my native language

    • @MattLloydTube

      Yes understand thank you

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  9 місяців тому +1

      Exactly that Matt.
      If I am deliberately playing for 4mm left let's say, then if I hit: 4mm, 3mm, 2mm it won't matter. Even if I actually catch centre I should be OK.
      But if I'm aiming for centre, and I catch the WRONG side of the cue ball by 1mm, that will cause me to miss.

    yeah, you need to be on very high level to do this. First you need to get rid of unwanted side on all kind of shots, have a perfect straight cuing, achieve good cue power to make the white roll all around the table, and made cueball go exactly where you want it to. After that you can see the benefits of putting those little sides there. I'm not at that level 🙂 I play side only when cueball hits the cushion and mostly running side when I need to speed up the white for positional reasons. Playing it more would screw up my pot success percentage.
    BTW, I can clear up the colors and those 4 reds in 5 attempts, but I would say, you should be able to clear up the whole lineup to start using side all the time. Colors clear up is just potting 6 balls and those 4 reds is just 8, right. You should be able to pot more in a row than that, I believe.

    I am sharing what really helped me in making conistent pots, hope this helps you guys:
    PHYSICAL :
    1. Made my physical portion of the game strong i.e. Aiming while standing, walking in, cueing straight with/out spin.
    2. Putting the chalk in my pocket rather than in table. As it messes up aim as I aim while i chalk the cue. I am assuming which most of us do.
    3. While getting down, i look at the spot where i want to hit.
    4. Accepted the fact that i am not a professional and understood that i cue differently for hard shots and soft shots as I pull my cue farther for hard shots and vice versa for soft shots.
    MENTAL:
    1. I predecide my chance if making the shot only then i attempt it. If its 90% + I aim only for potting, anything less i play with pot cum safety.
    2. Whenever i think of playing with top and while i am in bent position I decide that maybe bottom might give me better position. I get up and aim again as i noticed i cue differently for top spin shots and bottom shot. Made my accuracy go up a lot.
    3. And i always keep this in mind whenever i play. That oponent is as nervous as i am but he is just good at covering it. Gives me a sadistic confidence on my game. It's almost like you made your opponent an audience to your amazing game.
