Hi Gary, I know the Istanbul Barbecue kebab shop in Teddington and I agree with you. They have always fresh salads, tasty kebabs, wonderful chips and chilli sauce. You should have tried also their Shakshuka, which I believe is one of the best in whole London. I once went into their kitchen by mistake and was surprised how clean and tidy it was. This explains their Food Hygiene score which is a 5 for many years. It’s my family’s favorite place to spoil ourselves at least once a week after a tiring day. Congratulations to the team and the owner 💐👌🏻👏🏻
Absolutely agree with you Gary, GDK is possibly the worst place to experience authentic Turkish Kebabs. Best Kebabs are usually found at small family run businesses. Enjoyed watching your videos as always Gary. ❤ Thank you

Thank you Frank. Means a lot. I loved the first kebab - it was superb. I've seen a lot of hype surrounding GDK but it just wasn't appetising nor the required heat.
I was in Berlin over Easter and had a couple of kebabs - one meat and one falafel - and they were delicious and fresh and nothing like the versions GDK churn out here! Great review Gary.
Yes that's exactly it in a nutshell, the way Turkish people do kebabs in Germany is incredible, GDK seem to be just a chain that have tapped into that concept but the best analogy is you end up with a McDonald's type experience as opposed to an American Diner burger!
That salad from Istanbul kebabs looked so amazingly ice cold and fresh my PC screen nearly froze up (in fact I nearly got some de-icer). It looked a really beautiful kebab too , even if the pitta did look a little like cream crackers. A definite 10 from me. As for GDK.. There is nothing more uggy than a cold greasy kebab. You have shown once again how you consistently deliver honest reviews and always filled with such variety. Thank you for this great channel.
I got a carry out from GDK a few weeks ago and the kebab and sides were stone cold, a very disappointing experience. I'm with you Gary will never go or order from them again, loving your channel. Keep up the great work.

Hi Gary another great review. I agree with you the German kebab does not look great. I got a German kebab a couple of weeks ago and it was awful never again.
Me too, always wanted to try GDK and had my opportunity a couple of weeks back. The bread was good but other than that it was bland, tasteless and an absolute rip of at £12.50 for a Doner. Terrible, never again!!
Afternoon Gary another great video Visited a few GDKs and in my experience the quality varies wildly which is strange for a chain. At its best the value was excellent as a general rule if you "know" your local independent is of a decent standard you can't go far wrong
Another enjoyable review Gary, saw on another video about you mentioning the-German Doner Kebab! I would of taken them fries back, Istanbuhl Barbecue looked nice and been in there before-shame about you didn't like the Doner meat- I have had times at different branches where I have liked the meat and wasn't greasy at all! Another enjoyable review!
The first doner looked outstanding. So good infact, I would end my 25yr break from kebabs for one of those! So fresh and inviting. Unlike the German doner, it looked fit for the Alsatian dog only. Nice review as ever Gary. Keep up the good work and thanks for posting. 🙂
Thanks Gary, absolutely love your channel. Nothing better than being sat eating my dinner whilst watching you try great food. Just thought I’d mention that I was in Berlin recently and went to the TERAS Döner Kebab Restaurant. Best kebab I’ve ever had by far!
Oh the days of buying a Kebab and chips after coming out of a nightclub at 3am , then taking it home and eating it cold whilst watching Prisoner Cell Block H at Mum and Dads….
New subscriber here, I’ve never tried GDK and by the sounds of it I’m glad I watched your vid to save me the heartache. Keep up the good work my friend 👍👍👍
Hello Gary, I have certainly enjoyed this video. I have stopped visiting German Donner Kebab for the fact that as you mentioned in the video where fries are cold and as well, the meat is also cold too not even luke warm. The portions are too small for the price you are paying. It is amazing to hear you enjoyed Istanbul BBQ as the food looked amazing and the portion of food for the price you paid is worth the month. Keep up the good work
Like most people here (judging by the comments), I totally appreciate the honesty, and you seem to be a very kind, generous person. Always enjoy your reviews. Thanks.
I agree with all your comments Gary. I’m half-German and the GDK was poor quality. The traditional Turkish kebab looked really tasty and the salad was quality. Many thanks for sharing with us. A very enjoyable video 👍👍👍
New to your channel buddy and now sitting as I type in the Istanbul Barbecue place (which is fairly local to me) and waiting for my food Great channel and a new subscriber here 👍🏼👍🏼
Gary, I have to be honest I tried the GDK for the first time last year and found it was really good hot fresh and tasty, my local kebab shop tends to always give you pre cooked meat from a pot of hot water not knowing how long it’s been sitting there, and not cheap, when I asked him for fresh meat he got the hump. So I suppose you can’t take a snapshot and make a conclusion. Anyway I’m booked into the Bombay delight next week on your suggestion 😊
It’s very much dependent on the chain you visit. Some might be good and some not so good. That’s fantastic news Tony, I hope you enjoy. The restaurant itself is superb and I think you will love the food, please let me know how it goes. Cheers mate!
I'll also add that the GDK branch we use is absolutely brilliant as well. Everything cooked fresh, we've never had a bad meal there. I think what you have to accept here is that like any franchise you'll get good ones and bad ones along the way. What you've done in this video is compare a great traditional restaurant run by (probably) people who know the food, against what is in essence the McDonald's of the kebab world with servers who don't know the food they're serving, just how they're to package it.
Well its usually fresh. So what happens is, they put up a big donner bought from a supermarket. Cook it. And store it in the hot pot. If you want to taste traditional in house made then visit Istanbul shops. If the owner is Asian. Then 99 percent its not in house made
Good review. I love a doner and the German chain ones are OK- ish. For a really good German one, try Ali’s Kebabs across from Ealing Broadway station. For a traditional doner, I like them on a naan. Blackburn has some epic spots. Loads of fresh salad, loads of meat, brilliant.
you have the best food review channel on youtube, Gary. Straight forward and honest reviews! You should check out Bosphorus Kebabs in South Kensington and The Best Turkish Kebab in Stoke Newington.
Love your reviews Gary. That Turkish kebab looked good. However I can recommend one that would blow it out of the water. Crystal's on the Holloway Road just along from Nags Head and almost opposite the Odeon cinema. Its the best Turkish lamb doner I have ever had. Go on-give it a go!😂
It's only a smallish seating area inside. But very pleasant. I would order the medium size lamb doner. You definitely won't be disappointed. Comes with all the "trimmings". £10. I always call in before going to watch The Arsenal.
Hi Gary love your reviews. I reckon neither place you visited really captured the traditional British kebab experience. Check out the Macmasters review of the Caspian which is in a rough part of Nottingham. That is a proper kebab!!
I absolutely love a Doner Kebab and agree the Instanbul one looked great, just a bit unusual that it didn’t come with a complete pitta bread as is normal. I would’ve thought the German version would be good as I know a lot of Turks moved to Germany. I suspect it’s a location thing as I’ve seen other GDK reviews that have been great. I can seriously recommend Harringay (Green Lanes) as the Kebab’s there are amazing. Not sure if still available but hopefully they are, the charcoal grill Kebab restaurants are just fantastic and I’m sure are totally authentic Turkish. You will not be disappointed if you visit. I spent many years in that area and pretty much always dined Turkish!
Another good review, well filmed and narrated. Your comments were bang on and fair Gary. I enjoy your choice of background music; who is the flugelhorn player?
Turkish one for me wins by a mile, in my Town we have about half a dozen kebab shops and one GDK but the best one is the "kebab van" small donor £3.50 large £4.50 and they are amazing and are busy all day, the kebab shop in Nottingham called 'Caspian' looks very good though I'm tempted to try it out. As normal brilliant honest review, cheers Gary roll on the next video.
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman, brilliant comparison clip today. My first comment is that kebab has to be 'LAMB' it has to be, beef, pork, and chicken just don't cut the mustard and if you want that type, go to the Iceland shop. On impressions as soon as i saw the German kebab shop i believed it was going to win hands down as it was amazingly clean and tidy and looked the business. What a shame about the poor quality of meat and the fact it was luke warm, shame on them. As for the Istanbul restaurant i was not surprised the were a clear winner the Turkish just know there stuff when it comes to kebabs, on saying that this is the first place iv seen not putting the meat in a pitta, that did surprise me. Great vlog as always Gary, i look forward to my Gary Eats fix every few days. Chris. PS- Shout out to Mr Cameraman he did some amazing close up's and filming on this one. PPS- Im a Donner man also BUT YOU MUST try a Shawarma lamb kebab, they are out of this world.
Hi Chris. Firstly, a nice little assessment to read mate. I will say that GDK's interior is very modern and actually was quite a nice environment to sit in and very clean. However, you're right... there was no contest in the end. I appreciate your kind comments about the close ups, I will let the cameraman know and I will definitely try that soon. I know a place! Thank you as always my good friend.
I lived in Germany for most of the 90s and I used to go frequent a Turkish food truck. Their donor kebab’s were completely different from either of those. They served it with a soft flatbread, the meat looked more “roasted” and it was sliced fresh onto the bread. Had a little salad, tzatziki sauce, and red pepper flakes on top. The fries were extra crispy and served with curry ketchup. Germans loved curry ketchup. I haven’t found another kabob that compares to that! I remember it cost around five Deutschmarks. Köstlich!!
Hi gary . I think you was alittle harsh on the German kebab . Ive had that home delivered a few times , and to be honest i thought it was better than the local ones i walk too (i tend to get the meat , salad , bread , and sauce delivered separate ) that way its not a sogy pitta and limp salad etc mess ). I feel the gaff you went too was well , i think its a case of some are good some are crappy . As for the traditional kebab houses , again some are good and some are crappy . Keep doing the vids , hopefully when you get more subs , that should pay for your cuisine exploration.
Hi Gary I enjoyed your video, the first kebab looked really nice, I see what you mean they could of put everything inside the bread easy to eat. GDK 50/50 I agree with you too, I recently tried GDK for the first time, I was disappointed the meat was beef not lamb, also the chips weren’t great. The best thing about GDK was the bread & they put everything inside , the sauce and salad was alright so yeah mix feelings about GDK
I have to say Gary, I’ve tried the GDK, at a couple of places and I’m not impressed. Traditional Doner all day long, but not often do you see it cut fresh. It largely is taken from a steel pot which keeps the slices warm. When you get one cut fresh in front of you, it’s the tops.
Another very useful and informative review Gary. I have a GDK in Nottingham which I have considered trying - not on your nelly now! Be careful - you may become the Martin Lewis of the food world! Keep up the good work...David
I fully support everything you said about this comparison. No reason in the world to be served lukewarm food in a restaurant. Like, kitchen to table in at most 2 minutes. Also I’m a kabaholic (there’s a new word 😀) I’m addicted to them. Mine has got to be lamb meat. Great review Gary. Great to see subscription numbers creeping up too. 👍
You always give a fair review , giving reasons why you think how you see taste and it’s always in a way that you do not offend . The Turkish kebab was definitely the one to have . Thank Gary🙏🏼🤩👍❤️
I fully agree with you. The Istanbul kebab was far superior and looked fresh. I’ve tried the German kebab at 3 different shops and like you said they’re beef and not lamb. The chips are always cold to lukewarm and as for the kebab they’re just one soggy mess. Istanbul is the winner here or any Turkish kebab place is a 100 times better. 🙂👍
Once upon a time you could fly to lamb kebab heaven very cheaply. Now you can't. trust me, once upon a time the street vendors loved serving you. It was amazing!
I tried my local GDK and it was revolting, next to no sauce, meat or salad. However that was about a year ago now and I have noticed in this video the bread is now thinner as when I bought it the bread was thick, which was a problem as the little sauce given soaked into the bread and none on the meat or salad. The meat given was only one strip of beef and the rest chicken (though not really meaty as they were crispy strips), the salad was not fresh, the fries were unseasoned and they gave me a sauce that tasted like coconut.
It must be awful to be a restaurant owner or manager to see that your staff does have not enough pride to create good food and then witness bad reviews on UA-cam or FB!
Ok so first plate, no way was that kebab meat fresh its cut off one of those big lumps that sit on on vertical rotisserie in the window for days on end, pitta bread was like a cream cracker only thing missing was oinion mayo. Secocond plate looked cheap and cheerful but we knew it was going to be poor as the thumbnail pointed that out
Sorry Chris. The usage of the word fresh was probably incorrect, I mean that instead of leaving it in a pot and then taking it out, they actually sliced it from the rotisserie which personally I much prefer.
Amazing how the high the prices have gone up Gary, we've got a GDK in Brum City Centre and it started off really great etc, but as time goes on these chain outlets just lose the concept and quality, the best outlets are always the one with stakeholder ownership.
As a turk that grew up on bbq kebabs be it doner or shish GDK isn't a comparable. Its bloke comparing a gourmet burger to a McDonald's cheeseburger - flat and tasteless. They put a mixed source of meats in the alleged doner in GDK so you don't even know what animal you are consuming as the chicken also has other poultry. They will be gone in a few years but those traditional high St kebab businesses have been operating for 15+ years in some cases 30 + years ( bosphorus South kensington)
Hi Gary. Very nice video. I thought I left a message last night after watching, but apparently not (think one beer too many). / So the first kebab and surroundings are clearly top quality. Just such a nice plate for sure. [Aside - there are a couple of Kebab vans I go to from time to time, not often but I do visit. They are also top quality - everything is on show, the salad is amazing and the whole van looks bright and clean. As a teenager I used to only visit the vans after several pints (!), but of late I really enjoy the odd Kebab of the van!]. / That second Kebab - well THAT reminded me of a bad kebab from a van. Not to be repeated. Cheers, Mark.
Thanks Gary another great review...i miss London's Turkish kebabs since moving up to north Yorkshire two years ago i haven't found a decent kebab anywhere.. cheers mate.. kind regards Dave 😁👍👍👍
Just a heads up for people in UK donner meat gets heated up when takeaway open then when they close it goes cold over night then re heated day after day... think about that before you next order
Great reviews as usual - that Turkish one looked fabulous. Shame about GDK - we tried our Sunderland one and was really nice. What I would have found interesting would be how GDK handled the problem of cold food - how stuff is put right is important to me. Keep up with these fab reviews - my list of places to try as recommended by you is growing by the week 👍
Really enjoyed that, thank you. Having spent time in Berlin, I wouldn't be surprised if the meat wasn't horse. They don't have the same attitude as we have. Couldn't be doing with luke warm food so it would be the real McCoy for me. Thanks for taking us along.
The German doner kebab I belive is a beef kebab all the proper kebabs should be lamb👍I know a lot of people slate the kebab shops but in Luton we have loads of kebab shops and they have really upped their game with the food they sell everything fresh no meat in a warmer cooked and cut in front of you ,we have a German doner in Luton and it is greasy and not the best ,great vid again mate 👍👍
Well now I fancy some donner meat, but the Turkish type, with that lovely salad, the way they do the red cabbage is delicious. The bread I don’t think was pitta it was a Turkish flat bread and is the same as the bread we get from our local Turkish restaurant and is cooked exactly the same as the bread you had. Like you I think I prefer pitta but that maybe Greek rather than Turkish. A very good honest review as always, I know which I’d choose
I was actually would have much preferred pitta and it said pitta on the menu so I was a bit surprised when that greeted me but there we go. Thanks for watching Karen and glad you enjoyed it.
GDK is mass produced conveyor belt food. Istanbul kebabs looked head and shoulders above it. Everything down to the in-house produced chilli sauce looked first class. I will be trying them out in the near future.
😍💋🔥💜💕 Goodmorning Gary snd lovely Cameraman!! Hope all is well, and you had a great nosh! 👍🏽 The first one was quite stellar. Deconstructed. It's like a Fondue evening. Gotta do it yourself, but it tastes even better, somehow. (If only hubbies came the same way.)😊😊 Germany.. home of many beautiful folk .. but the donner, is unfortunately, isn't one of them. Cold chips? Lukewarm kebab and price. Sacrilegious. You both did amazingly well to get through the meal. So sorry about that. Much respect lads!!
Oh dear - ive had many ropey kebabs but cant recall one ever being lukewarm. Also im not a fan of the German style beef/chicken. It has to be lamb. Great review and loved your brutal honesty.
No brainer for you there old chap. The Istanbul looked fresh, well presented and a substantial portion to boot. The German offering was completely the opposite and frankly looked a bit of a mess. Absolutely no excuse at all for cold food either. Another well presented review for which I thank you
That was a very fair assessment. There is no excuse for food that is supposed to be hot being served luke warm. If ever you are in Singapore the best kebab I've ever had ( I don't know if they are the best kebab in Singapore ) was at Turkish Atas Kebabs, I had a chicken and beef kebab with chips, the salad was fresh, the chicken was so tender, the beef not so tender but it was full of flavour, the chips were nothing special until you dipped them in the yogurt and spicy tomato dip which was awesome. Keep up the good work Gary.
Not sure what part of town your from Gary but if you ever are around East London go to the best Turkish kebab been around 40 years and only make there own doners from lamb minimal fat and can do it in a pita and their chilli sauce is to die for not actually chilli but lovely only downfall it’s got no seating but worth it
Gary I must admit I have been to GDK in Liverpool twice and it was lukewarm there as well! I do prefer my kebab meat in a bread rather than separate thought! Let’s get Gary to 200,000 subscribers 😮
In Turkyie you get the kebab served as the plated version Gary - with differrnt types of bread on the side. If you want a 'takeaway' type kebab, ask for a kebab sandwich !
Definitely agree with you Gary. When this GDK place first opened up everyone was going on about it. Even then without trying it I felt a degree of scepticism that was compounded when I went there. To get rid of any doubt I went more than once. Just didn't match up to my local Turkish kebab shop in terms of quality or taste.
Evening Gary 👍 the traditional Turkish plate looked superb although the pitta situation seemed a bit strange and might have been better had it come as a constructed kebab imo. The 2nd place as you say appeared very quiet but you had tepid food, not good really. The first one looked the clear winner to me simply by presentation. Great review, honest as always, cheers ✌️🍻

Great review. I've used to frequent my local German Donner Kebab a fair bit . They seem very hit n miss - I have some great ones, but others not so good.
My mouth is watering for that lamb doner Gary! Have to say though I do love german doner too but it's not always consistent. The one i used to go to was the one in Finsbury Park. Keep up the good work , you've got a new subscriber! Chicken shops next?
Sounds great my friend. I will take a look at them as I love kebabs. I can do chicken shops but I'm not mad on fried chicken and they'll be much better UA-camrs than me who will do it justice. Thanks for watching!
@@GaryEats yes your right the chicken shop thing has kinda been done on youtube especially round London. well, I shall be keeping an out for future uploads and have bookmarked the pizza comparison vid as the next to watch!
@@GaryEats I personally hope that the GDK-chain is the only one which don’t have mutton Doner. I think that real Doner should always be made of lamb (or chicken of course for pollotarians) and not beef.
Nothing comes close to the doners I get in Turkiye, from the places that have the meat rotating out the window of the store on the street. Their meat and their bread is epic, and even though the prices in Turkiye have got up a lot, they're still about half the price in the uk and twice the portion size. Plus you get to pet a cat whilst your wait and have Turkish coffee/tea too

Visited a few GDKs and in my experience the quality varies wildly which is strange for a chain. At its best the value was excellent as a general rule if you "know" your local independent is of a decent standard you can't go far wrong
Thanks my friend. It does seem like lots of chains are different - appreciate you watching!
agreed.I tried the GDK in Colchester. never again!
So much depends on whether the staff take pride in their work, or just see it as a job.
Thank you Mike, I did return to GDK as I was told I wasn’t fair however second time was worse 😳
The first doner looked outstanding. So good infact, I would end my 25yr break from kebabs for one of those! So fresh and inviting. Unlike the German doner, it looked fit for the Alsatian dog only.
Nice review as ever Gary. Keep up the good work and thanks for posting. 🙂
Thank you very much Neil. Much appreciated and I will say the first place was lovely. I think it might be time for you to break your streak!
Outstanding with ultra processed donner meat? no thanks. Any sit down restaurant should have better quality donner meat for a start in my opinion.
Another great video Gary. Just slowly going back through your video library.
Wonderful. I’m sorry if you get a bit bored of my face.

No it’s fantastic i wish u could recommend something special in Oxford.
I would love to do a review in Oxford!
Thanks Gary, absolutely love your channel. Nothing better than being sat eating my dinner whilst watching you try great food. Just thought I’d mention that I was in Berlin recently and went to the TERAS Döner Kebab Restaurant. Best kebab I’ve ever had by far!
Thank you Neil. Really appreciate it. Wow, sounds delicious. Might have to give Germany a go!
Oh the days of buying a Kebab and chips after coming out of a nightclub at 3am , then taking it home and eating it cold whilst watching Prisoner Cell Block H at Mum and Dads….
LOL. I've been there.
And then waking up in the morning and finding the remnants under your pillow. 😅
New subscriber here, I’ve never tried GDK and by the sounds of it I’m glad I watched your vid to save me the heartache.
Keep up the good work my friend 👍👍👍
Welcome. Thank you very much :)
Keep up the good work
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Yes, couldn’t agree more with you. Thank you 😊
Thank you for yet another fantastic video Gary! I have tried both the German and traditional Doner Kebab, like you, I do prefer the traditional...
Glad you enjoyed it and agree with the assessment as well. Great minds think alike, Seb!
Like most people here (judging by the comments), I totally appreciate the honesty, and you seem to be a very kind, generous person. Always enjoy your reviews. Thanks.
Thanks you as always Siobhan x
As a Turk living in the north of England.
Watching you eat the Turkish kebab made my mouth water.
There is no REAL doner kebabs here.
Great vids.
That is really kind to say, but only one was a genuine Turkish kebab as you would know, really appreciate you watching and commenting 👍
I agree with all your comments Gary. I’m half-German and the GDK was poor quality. The traditional Turkish kebab looked really tasty and the salad was quality. Many thanks for sharing with us. A very enjoyable video 👍👍👍
Thank you Andreas. I've heard amazing things about the Doner in Berlin so might have to try it there. Thanks!
New to your channel buddy and now sitting as I type in the Istanbul Barbecue place (which is fairly local to me) and waiting for my food
Great channel and a new subscriber here 👍🏼👍🏼
Wow. That's great stuff mate. Enjoy your meal and let me know how it was!
@@GaryEats ~ Thoroughly enjoyed my scoff, set me up nicely for my nightshift..lol
Looking forward to your next video now 🤜🏼🏴🤛🏼
Wonderful mate. Good luck on your night shift (it's freezing!)
Then 99 percent its not in house made
Seen a few of your videos Gary, and really enjoying the content you put up, new sub. Hope your channel keeps growing. 👍
Thank you my friend :)
Thank you my friend. Appreciated!
Ali's is alright but I prefer Tavuuk's Gemüse Kebab in Soho.
you have the best food review channel on youtube, Gary. Straight forward and honest reviews! You should check out Bosphorus Kebabs in South Kensington and The Best Turkish Kebab in Stoke Newington.
Wow thank you mate. I can do that for sure 😊
Love your reviews Gary. That Turkish kebab looked good. However I can recommend one that would blow it out of the water.
Crystal's on the Holloway Road just along from Nags Head and almost opposite the Odeon cinema. Its the best Turkish lamb doner I have ever had.
Go on-give it a go!😂
Thank you Peter. Very kind of you! I will have a look at it.
It's only a smallish seating area inside. But very pleasant. I would order the medium size lamb doner.
You definitely won't be disappointed. Comes with all the "trimmings". £10.
I always call in before going to watch The Arsenal.
Thanks mate. Confident for this season?
Yes quietly confident. Came close last season. I used to live nearby but now live in Wales. I manage to get to a few games though.
Meant to add. With the lamb doner you can choose either rice, couscous or chips. I always choose rice.
Amazing channel mate
Wow. Thank you mate. Much appreciated!
Hi Gary love your reviews. I reckon neither place you visited really captured the traditional British kebab experience. Check out the Macmasters review of the Caspian which is in a rough part of Nottingham. That is a proper kebab!!
I will take a look Peter. Thanks for your feedback and I really appreciate the kind words.
The British kebab experience is generally standing in a queue at 1am half cut🤣I can't see Gary doing that tbh but I know what you mean 👍
I've done that far too many times than I care to imagine Martin, lol. In my younger days anyway!
New subscriber here Gary, Your reviews are always honest and informative. Just scored German DK off my list.
Awesome, thank you!
I will be sure to give it a try mate. Thanks for the recommendation!
GDK is nothing like Kebabs you get in Germany. Berlin is incredible for kebabs. The best I've had outside of Istanbul
@@sneer0101 Berlin kebabs are the greatest. And I say this as someone who lives a 20 minute walk from Green Lanes
Another good review, well filmed and narrated. Your comments were bang on and fair Gary. I enjoy your choice of background music; who is the flugelhorn player?
Thank you and I appreciate the background music comment. I will let you know very soon! Please remind me :)
Hey Gary, it’s a shame you had such a bad experience with GDK. I eat at my local quite quite regularly and it’s always been amazing x
I would assume it's just the local chain which isn't good. Hoping for a better experience if I ever go back!
I can't stand GDK. I find the portions a joke too
That was my experience with them too. Cold chips and not many at that. Meat was razor thin and flavourless.
GDK is garbage...not even proper Donner meat
My GDK is very good, beats all local Pakistani kebab places by a country mile
Turkish one for me wins by a mile, in my Town we have about half a dozen kebab shops and one GDK but the best one is the "kebab van" small donor £3.50 large £4.50 and they are amazing and are busy all day, the kebab shop in Nottingham called 'Caspian' looks very good though I'm tempted to try it out. As normal brilliant honest review, cheers Gary roll on the next video.
Thanks Harold! Much appreciated :)
Köstlich!!
That’s sounds amazing and wow great value as well
Thank you mate. Appreciate it 😊
I think a bad experience was had. The GDK in Glasgow produces good quality food.
Like with many chains. No consistency.
You are fast becoming my favourite Gary, so clear and honest without overdoing it. What was the little pot of sauce with the first kebab I missed it?
Thank you so much Sue. Means an awful lot. The pot of sauce was homemade chili! Thanks.
Thanks my friend 👍 I didn't like GDK at all mate so can see where you're coming from. Thanks for watching!
That crunch from the fries in the first place. Amazing. Felt like I was there with you.
😋 lovely!
Not surprise Steve, seems to be a common consensus. Thanks for watching!
Another very useful and informative review Gary. I have a GDK in Nottingham which I have considered trying - not on your nelly now! Be careful - you may become the Martin Lewis of the food world! Keep up the good work...David
Glad it was helpful David!
Good honest review mate
Thanks 👍
I fully support everything you said about this comparison. No reason in the world to be served lukewarm food in a restaurant. Like, kitchen to table in at most 2 minutes. Also I’m a kabaholic (there’s a new word 😀) I’m addicted to them. Mine has got to be lamb meat. Great review Gary. Great to see subscription numbers creeping up too. 👍
Well said! Kebabaholic is great, might use that myself. Thanks mate, trying my best!
You always give a fair review , giving reasons why you think how you see taste and it’s always in a way that you do not offend . The Turkish kebab was definitely the one to have . Thank Gary🙏🏼🤩👍❤️
Nice honest reviews.
Always! Thanks mate.
I am not a kebab eater, Gary, but even I could tell the Turkish doner was far superior! Looked a lovely place inside too😊
It was Sheila. Thanks for watching!
apparently they hate German Doner there lol real German Doner is supposed to be more rich than traditional Turkish.
This is a very good comment
Proper perspective and review BANG ON
BOSH
Thanks my friend!
Totally agree! Much better 😊
If you had said that GDK was better then your channel would of died! Glad you know what your talking about. Thanks.
Lol. Thanks Richard!
Once upon a time you could fly to lamb kebab heaven very cheaply. Now you can't. trust me, once upon a time the street vendors loved serving you. It was amazing!
Times have sadly changed. Thanks for watching!
I nearly ordered on ubereats once. But if they couldn't keep it warm in the shop, there's no hope!
Just discovered the channel Gary. Great stuff
Welcome aboard Stuart. I would avoid it mate!
I've never been to a GDK commercial outlet, but I've had plenty of "proper" German Döner kebabs in Germany, and they're wonderful.
Oh I can imagine they’re lovely in Berlin.
Great channel Gary and I really enjoy your reviews .I recommend O Calhau in Bedfont it is a Mediterranean menu
Really kind of you Roy. I will take a look!
Never been to GDK but thanks for the head's up. The Istanbul place looks so nice and lush. Credit to them.
More than welcome. Thanks for watching!
I always watch and enjoy your channel Gary ,A question though how do you keep so trim eating all these lovely not always healthy meals ?
I try not eat too much during the week my friend 🤣
It must be awful to be a restaurant owner or manager to see that your staff does have not enough pride to create good food and then witness bad reviews on UA-cam or FB!
Agreed. Some serious room for improvement.
I tried GDK a few months ago, a big mistake,
I tried Subway some years back and haven't returned.
GDK will be the same deal, once bitten twice shy.
Seems to be a very common theme with GDK.
As it’s a franchise operation, maybe the overhead increases
I've no interest in food reviews but subscribed to your channel to give you some support in progressing further in your endeavours.
That's very kind of you. Thank you.
I do not like GDK at all. I would rather have a traditional kebab every day of the week. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Mark! Hope you enjoyed your beers last night. Spot on - can't disagree with anything you've said!
Thanks Gary another great review...i miss London's Turkish kebabs since moving up to north Yorkshire two years ago i haven't found a decent kebab anywhere.. cheers mate.. kind regards Dave 😁👍👍👍
Sorry to hear that Dave. Hopefully you manage to find one soon. Thanks for watching mate and enjoy the week.
Istanbul barbecue is my local one.Always great food and service. Thanks for all your reviews gary
Wow wow wow. What a small world! Glad you enjoy it :)
Just a heads up for people in UK donner meat gets heated up when takeaway open then when they close it goes cold over night then re heated day after day... think about that before you next order
Thanks!
Thank you Carol. Much appreciated!
Hi Gary 👋...really enjoying your reviews....Do you drive to these places ? Was wondering if you could mention parking options. Would be a great help..
Hi Sarah. Thank you. I do drive to these places mostly. I can do that for you certainly :)
Really enjoyed that, thank you. Having spent time in Berlin, I wouldn't be surprised if the meat wasn't horse. They don't have the same attitude as we have. Couldn't be doing with luke warm food so it would be the real McCoy for me. Thanks for taking us along.
Glad you liked it Jeff. Much appreciated mate!
Completely agree with you Jamie. Don't rate GDK at all, thanks for that mate.
Gary makes great videos!
Thank you mate!
@@GaryEats maybe they loosely use the term as that’s what people are used to.
GDK is mass produced conveyor belt food. Istanbul kebabs looked head and shoulders above it. Everything down to the in-house produced chilli sauce looked first class. I will be trying them out in the near future.
Completely agree with you. Glad you live close by so you can give it a go. Thanks for watching!
All is great thank you. Thank you as always for your lovely comments.
Evening Gary, Only been once to a GDK, I won't be going again. I'm sticking to the the Turkish kebabs. Great review.
Evening mate. Don't blame you. Much appreciated!
I recently had a kebab at Istanbul in Teddington and it was amazing!
Excellent news!
Excellent review Gary, I too tried GDK and that will be a one off experience, very disappointed, keep up the good work mate.
Thanks Jason. Very kind of you 👍
Oh dear - ive had many ropey kebabs but cant recall one ever being lukewarm. Also im not a fan of the German style beef/chicken. It has to be lamb. Great review and loved your brutal honesty.
Completely agree with you Rob. A cold kebab is virtually a waste of money. Thanks mate!
No brainer for you there old chap. The Istanbul looked fresh, well presented and a substantial portion to boot.
The German offering was completely the opposite and frankly looked a bit of a mess.
Absolutely no excuse at all for cold food either.
Another well presented review for which I thank you
You're more than welcome Ian and I completely agree with your assessment.
Went to GDK once at Lakeside Essex never again. I go to Kebab King Kings rd London good value good food keep up the good work Gary ..
Thanks Michael and I completely agree with you.
Thank you Gerry.
Not sure what part of town your from Gary but if you ever are around East London go to the best Turkish kebab been around 40 years and only make there own doners from lamb minimal fat and can do it in a pita and their chilli sauce is to die for not actually chilli but lovely only downfall it’s got no seating but worth it
Hi Mate. I'm actually not from London but if I see it, I will give it a go!
Gary I must admit I have been to GDK in Liverpool twice and it was lukewarm there as well! I do prefer my kebab meat in a bread rather than separate thought! Let’s get Gary to 200,000 subscribers 😮
It’s better to visit a traditional Turkish kebab shop John and thank you
I had a German Doner Kebab at their outlet in York and i enjoyed it! Mine was nice and hot though! I seem to remember they used beef instead of lamb?
They use beef instead of lamb, Scotty. They also have chicken or a mix. Glad you enjoyed yours though!
In Turkyie you get the kebab served as the plated version Gary - with differrnt types of bread on the side.
If you want a 'takeaway' type kebab, ask for a kebab sandwich !
Got you Andy. Cheers mate!
Thank you. Much prefer the usual kebabs.
Evening Martin 👍 How are you mate? Yes, I would have much preferred a constructed kebab. Spot on mate. Thank you very much!
@@GaryEats I'm good thank you, I've often wondered do food reviewers still complain about naff food and or service, or is it just reflected in the review, you are after all a paying customer review or not? Within touching distance now of 10k Gary, seems like only last week you were on 5k🤣Great stuff and take care 👍
I just reflect it in the review my friend. I can't believe how fast everything has grown, all a bit overwhelming Martin. Thanks as always.
Great review.
I've used to frequent my local German Donner Kebab a fair bit . They seem very hit n miss - I have some great ones, but others not so good.
Completely agree that most of it is probably chain based. Some good and some not so good!
My mouth is watering for that lamb doner Gary! Have to say though I do love german doner too but it's not always consistent. The one i used to go to was the one in Finsbury Park. I used to live on Green Lanes and the kebabs down there are amazing of course. In particular Gokyuzu and Diyarbakir kitchen which I was lucky to live 2 minutes walk from!
Wonderful stuff.
Does it is easy in London (and in UK overall) to find places where they have Doner made of mutton?
I am not sure
@@GaryEats I personally hope that the GDK-chain is the only one which don’t have mutton Doner. I think that real Doner should always be made of lamb (or chicken of course for pollotarians) and not beef.
Interesting comparison. I was thinking of trying German Doner Kebab but will stick to a local independant shop.
You should stick to your local, Nick. Thanks for watching!
The intro was interesting 😮
The young boy was interested because of camera 😅
He was very interested!

Are Greek "gyros" a thing there? We don't really have many actual kebab shops here in the US. I
Of course. We have lots of shops like that!
You're around most of my favourite places Gary
Great stuff Michael.
I don't mind GDK but you can't beat a proper kebab ,GDK don't actually sell doner kebab as they opt for beef over lamb as cheaper
Spot on mate.
Nothing comes close to the doners I get in Turkiye, from the places that have the meat rotating out the window of the store on the street. Their meat and their bread is epic, and even though the prices in Turkiye have got up a lot, they're still about half the price in the uk and twice the portion size. Plus you get to pet a cat whilst your wait and have Turkish coffee/tea too
That’s absolutely brilliant 👌
