Dear Gary, I’m a Yorkshirewoman, living in Denmark. When I was a little girl, we used to go to Ilkley sometimes, for a day out. We always stopped at Harry Ramsden’s for fish and chips, on the way home. It was a treat, every time. I’m 62 now, and you’ve brought back such lovely memories - a sentimental walk down memory lane. I'm a Yorkie now retired to Lincolnshire and we used to visit Harry Ramsdens frequently for superb Fish and Chips. Here in Lincolnshire the Fish and Chips are lovely but sadly ( for us) they cook 'skin on' not something we like. In West York's where we originate from it was always cooked with skin removed.

Billy Murgatroyd, the founder was an old mill owner and when the mills shut down Billy used his assets to develop this new venture. We don't see quality wool worsted cloth that was the pride of Yorkshire but we still have glimmers of past success in the form of this outstanding emporium. Thanks for your honest review Gary.
Hi Brian, you are underselling Yorkshire, something Yorkshiremen, don't usually do. The last three suits I had made, were all Yorkshire woollen worsteds, from mills in Halifax. Yorkshire worsteds, are still among the best in the world and I would always pick them and did for years, prior to retirement. I live in London, so I have never been to Murgatroyd's, but it looked great, you are lucky to have it on your doorstep. I am fortunate to have a few decent fish & chip restaurants nearby and they will have to do, all the best.

Wow Gary and Mr Cameraman, what a brilliant vlog, so many firsts here we need to mention. First impression of the place, talk about clean and tidy, the place was amazingly smart and that always gives me confidence in a place as they clearly care. Food, as soon as it came out it had that wow factor and looked the business, and as for portion size you just can not criticise that. I loved the fact also that nothing was swimming in grease as often happens in a lot of places. Also i know i go on about it, but the camera work here and close up's were A1, it was like i was actually there. Well defiantly a 10/10 for me, especially as it was nearly a tenner less than Blumenthal's place, and with no service charge. Chris.

There are some terrific fish and chip shops in Yorkshire and I've seen this one reviewed before. I don't necessarily think you need nice surroundings for simple fish and chips, but it certainly seems really pleasant decor without being over the top for traditional food like this. The tea was 'proper' and it needs to be to accompany fish and chips. The haddock looked beautiful and succulent and the batter yummily crispy. And thank goodness for properly thick mushy peas too. Really nice Gary and I think the price was OK for all-in! Totally agree with your 10/10! 👍

Been here many, many years ago and it was excellent. A few years ago we flew in from China and went to the Magpie in Whitby which was also superb plus we had excellent views while we ate.

Yet another great review and I totally agree with your marking. You cannot beat fish cooked in beef dripping. Locally where I am only one fish and chip shop still does this and luckily they cook the chips in the beef dripping as well. The fish itself looked really flaky and the batter was just perfection and price wise you just couldn't beat it. As you mentioned you would be paying a lot more in London especially if you eat in. Keep those reviews coming as I am blitzing this channel trying to see all your previous reviews.

It looked amazing Gary. You usually say "chips are chips" but here you didn't so they were clearly some of the best. And you can order a giant portion too which is great. I also noticed how spotlessly clean the restaurant was so seems an absolute winner all round.
That haddock looked outstanding and even better than the fish I get at my local Traditional Fish and Chips. However they do keep the skin on there which I feel is a bonus. I absolutely love mushy peas too so that also looked so delicious. Overall it looked like a very pleasant meal indeed. Excellent review 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼!

Hey Gary, off topic but thanks for the suggestion of Porterford Butchers in London. We went there together for some take away lunch and got the pulled meat baguettes. Very tasty and much better than anything from Pret-a-Manger! Thanks for the recommendation!
I went to that place as well following the GaryEats recommendation. The queues are crazy but its a sign that they're doing something right! Baguettes are definitely good - I went for the lamb and onion one. For £6 its great value given how much meat you get and given how expensive most places are in London. I also went there after work to buy some cold meats (Italian sausages, steak etc) to take home and cook. I can definitely recommend them.

Good timing for me, I'm planning to make some chip shop curry sauce from scratch at the weekend to have with some fish and chips. Hopefully it will turn out as nice as the sauce you had here. The batter on that fish looked amazing and plenty of premium looking fish inside. Should have made a chip butty for Mr Cameraman to help you polish off the stack of bread. As a southerner, I'll concede to the good folk up north, when it comes to fish and chips, they run rings around us on most occasions.

One of the best Fish n chip restaurants I have been to is ‘steels’ in Cleethorpes, North Lincolnshire. They are excellent and come with bread and butter and a pot of tea as part of the deal.

Harrods seriously need to up their Fish & Chips game.

The restaurants I have listed to visit are below. I am working through all your old videos and I can develop my list further. Margaritas Fish and Chips- The curry sauce looked amazing. It the fact the batter did not overwhelm the haddock. You said the portions size was good. Aldo jut greasy. Goldman's - I love my steaks medium rare. So I liked what I saw on your plate. Liked the look of the chips and massive fan of peppercorn sauce. Which you gave the thumbs up. Hinds Head - service seemed good, considering you had not booked. The crunch in the chips as you but in!!!! The curry sauce also liked a winner here. The crisp batter was shading, liked they get their fish daily from Cornwall. Plus: Regency Cd Paul Rothe and Son De Vine E Pellicci

I live in Leeds and Murgatroyds is the only place I go for fish and chips. I agree with your rating. The other thing is no matter how busy they are, (and it’s nearly always busy), all the staff are so helpful, friendly and kind . Many have worked there for years which has to be a good sign. So glad you enjoyed it as much as I do. We’ve lots of places much nearer but none compare 👍🏻

I just discovered this channel a few days ago, and was recommended the two expensive fish and chips videos by UA-cam. I watched them both, and kept thinking we've got to get you up to Yorkshire to try Murgatroyds or the Wetherby Whaler (a couple of miles away in Guiseley in the former Harry Ramsden's building), and here you are! I've been going to Murgatroyds for years with my parents - there's a senior citizen's option on the menu and always been impressed. Glad you enjoyed yours!
Oh my.....That fish & chips looked absolutely magnificent Gary ! Curry sauce & mushy peas were terrific too ! Yorkshire tea (what ese) to wash it all down with. The perfect meal ! My wife & I had fish & fish 'n' chips 4 times during our UK holiday this year (July-Sept) and loved it every time ! We preferred haddock for the taste. We had never tried curry sauce before but we loved it. Wish they did that over here. We had haddock & chips in Oban & Plockton (Scotland) and Robin Hood's bay North Yorkshire coast & in Falmouth. I don't think fish 'n' chips here are a patch on what we could get in the UK. Batter is never crispy, you can't get mushy peas or curry sauce and you never know exactly what sort of fish you're getting most of the time. Usually is a variety of shark. My word Gary, you have my mouth watering now !

Just found this channel and after watching a few videos I'm hooked. Proper reviews of good food with a nice dry sense of humour! Having lived in Bradford for a few years I can vouch for the fact that the food is always that good (and if you want to save a bit the takeaway prices are a few quid cheaper)
Hi Gary. On the strength of your recommendation I've been to Murgatroyds 4 times in the last month, it really is top drawer fish and chips as good as anywhere in the UK. Great value for money especially the senior citizens (over 60) 3 course fish and chips special for a bargain £15.50! And that includes peas 3 slices of bread and tea or coffee. I opted for the prawn cocktail starter which was an extra £2.50 which was worth it because of the generous portion of north Atlantic prawns which were succulent and juicy. I had a slice of homemade cheesecake with cream which was delicious. A proper 3 course meal for £18. Keep up the good work Gary because you're the best UK food vloggers bar none pal. And thank you 🤗👍

I have so many happy memories of going to Murgatroyds with my grandma before she passed away in 2009. I've moved away from Leeds since, and not been back to Murgatroyds, but this video brought back those memories. We loved that place!

I worked in that building when it was an AFG Nissan dealership in 1991 so def not eating chips there for 40 years 😅

Wow Gary and Mr Cameraman, what a brilliant vlog, so many firsts here we need to mention.
First impression of the place, talk about clean and tidy, the place was amazingly smart and that always gives me confidence in a place as they clearly care.
Food, as soon as it came out it had that wow factor and looked the business, and as for portion size you just can not criticise that.
I loved the fact also that nothing was swimming in grease as often happens in a lot of places.
Also i know i go on about it, but the camera work here and close up's were A1, it was like i was actually there.
Well defiantly a 10/10 for me, especially as it was nearly a tenner less than Blumenthal's place, and with no service charge.

@@fickling3178 This is a food review, and if you look at the surroundings and attention to detail of the establishments as some of us do, you can make a safe assumption as to the toilet conditions.
There are some terrific fish and chip shops in Yorkshire and I've seen this one reviewed before. I don't necessarily think you need nice surroundings for simple fish and chips, but it certainly seems really pleasant decor without being over the top for traditional food like this. The tea was 'proper' and it needs to be to accompany fish and chips. The haddock looked beautiful and succulent and the batter yummily crispy. And thank goodness for properly thick mushy peas too. Really nice Gary and I think the price was OK for all-in! Totally agree with your 10/10! 👍

Been here many, many years ago and it was excellent. A few years ago we flew in from China and went to the Magpie in Whitby which was also superb plus we had excellent views while we ate.

Yet another great review and I totally agree with your marking. You cannot beat fish cooked in beef dripping. Locally where I am only one fish and chip shop still does this and luckily they cook the chips in the beef dripping as well.
The fish itself looked really flaky and the batter was just perfection and price wise you just couldn't beat it. As you mentioned you would be paying a lot more in London especially if you eat in.

That haddock looked outstanding and even better than the fish I get at my local Traditional Fish and Chips. However they do keep the skin on there which I feel is a bonus. I absolutely love mushy peas too so that also looked so delicious. Overall it looked like a very pleasant meal indeed. Excellent review 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼!

Hey Gary, off topic but thanks for the suggestion of Porterford Butchers in London. We went there together for some take away lunch and got the pulled meat baguettes. Very tasty and much better than anything from Pret-a-Manger! Thanks for the recommendation!

I went to that place as well following the GaryEats recommendation. The queues are crazy but its a sign that they're doing something right! Baguettes are definitely good - I went for the lamb and onion one. For £6 its great value given how much meat you get and given how expensive most places are in London. I also went there after work to buy some cold meats (Italian sausages, steak etc) to take home and cook. I can definitely recommend them.

Good timing for me, I'm planning to make some chip shop curry sauce from scratch at the weekend to have with some fish and chips. Hopefully it will turn out as nice as the sauce you had here. The batter on that fish looked amazing and plenty of premium looking fish inside. Should have made a chip butty for Mr Cameraman to help you polish off the stack of bread. As a southerner, I'll concede to the good folk up north, when it comes to fish and chips, they run rings around us on most occasions.

One of the best Fish n chip restaurants I have been to is ‘steels’ in Cleethorpes, North Lincolnshire. They are excellent and come with bread and butter and a pot of tea as part of the deal.

Absolutely right Clive... If you were to take the Harrods Fish & Chips Meal... And the Murgatroyds Fish & Chips Meal... And you had a hundred people try both of these meals... And then asked them to pick their favourite out of the two... I would hazard a guess... That not one single solitary vote would go to the Harrods version of Fish & Chips... Harrods seriously need to up their Fish & Chips game.

Gary this is awesome and so thorough. Meant to reply to you before. I'm the person who has stomach cancer but it's responding to treatment so I can eat again. The restaurants I have listed to visit are below. I am working through all your old videos and I can develop my list further.
Margaritas Fish and Chips- The curry sauce looked amazing. It the fact the batter did not overwhelm the haddock.
You said the portions size was good. Aldo jut greasy.
Goldman's - I love my steaks medium rare. So I liked what I saw on your plate. Liked the look of the chips and massive fan of peppercorn sauce. Which you gave the thumbs up.
Hinds Head - service seemed good, considering you had not booked. The crunch in the chips as you but in!!!! The curry sauce also liked a winner here. The crisp batter was shading, liked they get their fish daily from Cornwall.

I live in York and usually venture to The east coast to sample decent fish and chips, I'll have to head westwards to Murgatroyds I think.
The owners are brothers andy and james and are the loveliest of lads despite being leeds united fans 😂, I regularly sign write their chalkboards for them and sometimes get a free chippy lunch ! They are indeed the best fish and chips in england , love your channel gary 😄

I live in Leeds and Murgatroyds is the only place I go for fish and chips. I agree with your rating. The other thing is no matter how busy they are, (and it’s nearly always busy), all the staff are so helpful, friendly and kind . Many have worked there for years which has to be a good sign. So glad you enjoyed it as much as I do. We’ve lots of places much nearer but none compare 👍🏻

I just discovered this channel a few days ago, and was recommended the two expensive fish and chips videos by UA-cam. I watched them both, and kept thinking we've got to get you up to Yorkshire to try Murgatroyds or the Wetherby Whaler (a couple of miles away in Guiseley in the former Harry Ramsden's building), and here you are!
I've been going to Murgatroyds for years with my parents - there's a senior citizen's option on the menu and always been impressed. Glad you enjoyed yours!

Oh my.....That fish & chips looked absolutely magnificent Gary ! Curry sauce & mushy peas were terrific too ! Yorkshire tea (what ese) to wash it all down with. The perfect meal ! My wife & I had fish & fish 'n' chips 4 times during our UK holiday this year (July-Sept) and loved it every time ! We preferred haddock for the taste. We had never tried curry sauce before but we loved it. Wish they did that over here. We had haddock & chips in Oban & Plockton (Scotland) and Robin Hood's bay North Yorkshire coast & in Falmouth. I don't think fish 'n' chips here are a patch on what we could get in the UK. Batter is never crispy, you can't get mushy peas or curry sauce and you never know exactly what sort of fish you're getting most of the time. Usually is a variety of shark. My word Gary, you have my mouth watering now !

Just found this channel and after watching a few videos I'm hooked. Proper reviews of good food with a nice dry sense of humour!
Having lived in Bradford for a few years I can vouch for the fact that the food is always that good (and if you want to save a bit the takeaway prices are a few quid cheaper)

Hi Gary. On the strength of your recommendation I've been to Murgatroyds 4 times in the last month, it really is top drawer fish and chips as good as anywhere in the UK. Great value for money especially the senior citizens (over 60) 3 course fish and chips special for a bargain £15.50! And that includes peas 3 slices of bread and tea or coffee. I opted for the prawn cocktail starter which was an extra £2.50 which was worth it because of the generous portion of north Atlantic prawns which were succulent and juicy. I had a slice of homemade cheesecake with cream which was delicious. A proper 3 course meal for £18. Keep up the good work Gary because you're the best UK food vloggers bar none pal. And thank you 🤗👍

I have so many happy memories of going to Murgatroyds with my grandma before she passed away in 2009. I've moved away from Leeds since, and not been back to Murgatroyds, but this video brought back those memories. We loved that place!
