I had GDK once but never again. I think that sums it up, but not only was it tasteless, it also lacks authenticity, so I have to wonder about these places; I mean, they can be either good quality but have a spin on things so as not to be authentic, or be truly authentic and do their best. But when places lack quality and authenticity, why do they even bother?
I have to agree with you on GDK - over sanitised, lacking in flavour and authenticity. If the best thing about a place is the fries then you know there are problems!!
Not the first bad review I've seen for GDK ill avoid. Although I do prefer a kebab that is placed of rolled into the bread. There is a bad habit when getting a kebab around here to put everything on top of the bread on a plate and you eat it with a knife and fork.
I had a kebab not so long ago, where they cooked the pitta on the grill, sliced it open, then simply put it in the box and piled everything on top of it... I mean why?? Mad. As for GDK, yeah I would have to say it's a red light from me - give it a wide berth.
@@GreenoEatsI’m peckish for a decent kebab now. Haven’t had a proper one in ages. Got one last week but the kebab house beside the football stadium is rough and is only edible after several pints 😀.
The way the Turks do Döner kebab in Germany is completely different to how it's done in the UK and other countries. It's its own thing and has a kind of cult status. This GDK chain relies on Brits not knowing how it's supposed to smell and taste. They also use beef from 100% mincemeat, when in Germany, it's usually veal from max. 60% mincemeat.
Yeah, I wouldn't bother with GDK. But kebabs nowadays are generally a lot better than they were back in my youth I think - find a good, local kebab shop and give it a try !
That's too bad about the kebab, it looked like it would taste nice, but flavourless meat is a no no ina kebab for sure. Hopefully your next place will be more enjoyable. Thank you again for the video.
Hi greeno it says it all when you are unable to tell the difference between the beef and chicken in the spring rolls doesn't it?! Looks poor quality I must say. Thanks for the vids
Quite, it’s strange to me that they use beef rather than lamb, or at least a lamb/beef mix. Lamb has that distinctive flavour I associate with doner meat. Thanks for watching 🙂
Same. Meadowhall, first one I had was good, I was quite excited. Had one a couple of weeks ago and it was dire, vowed not to try it again. I'll stick to Barburrito!
I always ask for the salad *separate* and assemble my own kebab. You tend to get more donor meat and salad. (I don't understand why most kebab houses don't do tahini sauce)😋
Although the chain was started in Berlin, the kebabs do not reflect the Donners from the schnellis and street vendors in the city. They are half the size, greasy and the flavour is not representative. Some of the UKs own kebab shops are far better. Keep up the good work Greeno. Honest and subjective review as always.
I need to try me a proper German kebab clearly. Not sure when I will be in Germany next. I am in Austria on Monday, but not heading north from there until I come home !!
Greeno could you do taco bell ?, we have a couple in exeter and one in torquay, also would love too hear you view on popeyes chicken in exeter and kebab revolution in torquay is very nice
I actually took my daughter for a Taco Bell at the weekend and thought to myself "it's about time I filmed here" - got quite a few things lined up for the next 2-3 weeks but will see if I can sort it after that. Popeyes is on the list too - didn't realise there was one in Exeter (although that's still a 90 min drive ha ha!)
@@jonesychatswrestling4841 yes, Popeyes still very much on the list - I tried to get to one when I was in London recently, but it was so rammed I could film there so had to move on elsewhere !
I has GDK and it tasted rank. It's a tacky chain restaurant like KFC, Taco Bell, McDonalds etc. The German kebab opposite Ealing Broadway station tasted better and it's much cheaper.
This "kebab shop" gives us Germans a bad name. Here in Germany, I'm not aware of any large kebab chain. Most restaurants are small family businesses. I would recommend anyone who thinks this "restaurant" is "German" to go to a real kebab shop in Germany. We don't eat the kebab as dry as it is apparently served there. We usually have a garlic sauce or yoghurt sauce on top. Depending on the restaurant, there might also be other sauces.
I’ve not had a kebab on any of my visits to Germany, but generally have found the food to be good on my visits, and as you say, many family owned restaurants. I have spent most time in and around Frankfurt area, and always enjoyed the regional specialties such as Handkaese and Gruene Sosse, delicious!
GDK is an American chain. If you’re German you’re aggrieved that they use the word German. I had good experiences in the first year when they opened here. Went back a year later and it was shockingly poor.
@@GreenoEats Yes according to a franchise owner here in Canada. They rely on weekly shipments of their meat and bread from the U.S. Seems a little inefficient.
What a bummer when a "specialty" restaurant drops the ball with the thing they are supposed to do best. At least the fries and rolls were nice. But then, they are not what makes the name. Its "German Doner Kebab", not "Fries and Crispy Rolls". Better luck next time, Mr. Greeno.
To be fair I've never tried one but from all the reviews on UA-cam and friend recommendations they're definitely something to avoid or in today's speak , swerve 🤣 Lamb kebab with a few scoops...win ,win 👍
@@GreenoEats There are a couple in the village. Not my usual takeaway of choice, but if you find a good one locally, it is a result! Same for Indian and Chinese takeaways!
@@GreenoEats but then, isn't it just Turkish Kababs? if it was made with salted pork,I could see the fusion. am I missing something, how is this different than non German kababs? thanks
Hi Greeno, I totally agree with you about GDK, one visit was enough for me too. At my local kebab shop you'd have got that for about £7/8, not including the spring rolls. Better luck with your next eatery.
£11.48 for a kebab meal isn’t a bad price nowadays - hope it’s better quality than the crap we used to enjoy after the nightclub! 😂 Hmm…maybe you should stick to remembering them from the good Ol days! 😂
I saw Gary's comments on the German kebab phenomenon. Think he tried it twice and had horrendous experiences each time. Haven't tried it myself, but could it be that the meat in the form you have it is of a kind that somehow appeals to German palates? Given the varieties of wursts, I doubt it, but I did wonder... Great channel, discovered you via Gary. Greetings from Wales - I lived in Winchester very briefly as a student some 30-odd years ago.
Personally I thought Gary's moans were totally off target. He was having a bad day that day I think..😅😂😅 moaning about some of the meat being browned and dry and other pieces nice and moist which he liked. Its great to have both for flavour. Who doesn't like the odd piece with a lot of character in the bite? I love the first slice of any joint of meat when it comes out of the oven...seemingly Gary doesn't and that's his loss imo.
Tried GDK once and never again... it wasnt bad.. but the beef doner just doesnt taste right to me.. kind of odd in fact... and i didnt like the super heavy bread either... sorry... but for me a kebab isnt a kebab unless the doner meat is lamb and its either set on a naan or shoved in a pitta bread :P
I'm alright with different kinds of flatbread, but as you say the beef kebab is just a bit weird - need to have at least some lamb in the mix for the flavour!
@@GreenoEats yeah i'd be ok with the bread on its own.. it just seemed to heavy and filling on the stomach to eat alongside a kebab which is already heavy enough for me... i even struggle finishing of the ones in naan..... a pitta bread is my preference because its not so filling and quite light.. and thanks for the quick reply :P appeciated.. i just subbed :)
@@jaynadiah5498 thanks for the sub, much appreciated. One thing I’m not a huge fan of it the recent trend of putting a pitta in the bottom of the tray, and then just piling meat and salad on top… it’s supposed to go inside. At least when they do that with a naan it’s big enough to kind of wrap it.
Why mix the meats I always liked donnas only lamb and thats why I dont have them now. Sad that people just except a mix not what it should be. Even if it was a pound or two more I would pay that.
Lazzat kebab winton decent kebab i do noor for a super clean kebab or next door turkish for a tasty more greasy kebab or ali baba charmister for a charcoal real deal kebab
I was dreading you doing a review of this chain - fair play to you though, you deserve the Victoria Cross for extreme valour in the face of total gastronomic adversity. Had one of these meals, it was utter crap, unless you like tasteless cardboard and something as dry as a docker's armpit. Fact is, bearing in mind I speak German, have German friends and have been to the country frequently ....... German cuisine absolutely sucks .... the only thing they can cook is a sausage, nice with their well known curry sauce with pommes frites .... so effectively, it's all Death by Sausage - whenever I was there we always went for a Greek or Chinese .... my German friends wouldn't inflict their cuisine on me. Obviously, this German Doner Kebab stuff came from the Turkish influence of same living there .... would be good if they asked same for culinery training.
I've found a couple of regional things in Germany I like - especially around Frankfurt - the Hankkaese mit Musik and the Gruene Sosse - otherwise it's pretty functional (although I did have an amazing chiliwurst at a Wehen Wiesbaden game once!)
£11.50 for a Donner and Chips god mine at my takeaway is £3.50. I do think if you do a number of Kebabs you take some scales and weight what you get for the money I did a video from mine and did the weight of meat etc including the container of sauce. For what you are paying the items look a but lost. Have you done a Taco Bell. I tried for the 1st time a £2 one and it was really nice. but they have a meal deal for I think £6.50 For this place I have NOT seen any good review from GDK from every one who has done it.
It’s funny, in my youth you’d never think of having a kebab unless you’d had a belly full of beer. Now I don’t think I can remember the last time I had a kebab when I wasn’t stone cold sober!
A german doner kebap in the UK, sounds not real 😂😂😂 Most of the doner shops here in germany are absolute rubbish, expensive and low low low quality. Ever heard of Lukas Podolski? A formar german soccer player. He owns lots of doner stores in Cologne called Mangal Doener, it has nothing to do with authentic doner, but people buy the shi*** 😂
Podolski is originally from Poland I think, why on earth would he have kebab shops ha ha ! Of course, German has a huge Turkish population, back from the "Gastarbeiter" days in the 50s and 60s - you'd have to guess the Turkish guys make better kebabs than Podolski does!
@@GreenoEats he is from poland, true. I guess he is just a good business man. Pretty sure he has the most doener stores in Cologne, well it is franchise... there are only a handfull good turkish doener stores here, most of them are boring.
@@jessicanippes1730 That's really interesting. Whereas in Germany most of the workers came from Turkey and Yugoslavia, here in the UK we looked to our colonies, and invited folk from India, the West Indies etc. - as a result curry is now probably the most popular food in the UK - interesting that the Turkish folk aren't doing more to give their food a similar profile in Germany.

Yep, support your local Smithy, it’ll be money better spent that way!
The worst thing about gdk is not there disgusting kebabs it’s the fact they don’t do lamb in a kebab shop that blew my mind
Just weird isn't it - I guess beef is cheaper than lamb, but still!!
@@Kiangaf good excuse to have a few pints I reckon!
Don't think I've ever had a kebab while sober
I hadn't until about 10 or 12 years ago - but they are surprisingly good (well the good ones are ha ha!)
Interesting, thanks for the information!
Winchester even better during the King Alfred bus running days.
Is that the vintage bus thing they do sometimes?
Go back and try the plant based,it's like chewing elastic bands, still got jaw lock and I eat it 4 months ago, but the chips are nice 👍
Based on that assessment I think I will give it a miss ha ha!
@@GreenoEats 🤣
Interesting! I've not had a kebab for about 32 years. I was thinking of trying GDK, but will give it a miss now.
Yeah, it was very disappointing. Fingers crossed for better things to review around the corner!!
I tried this at Meadowhall and must agree Greeno, chips are nice but kebab very sickly, weird after taste, not enjoyable!
Same. Meadowhall, first one I had was good, I was quite excited. Had one a couple of weeks ago and it was dire, vowed not to try it again. I'll stick to Barburrito!
Just surprising how bland the kebab was, cos the fries and the sauces had plenty of flavour!
I always ask for the salad *separate* and assemble my own kebab.
You tend to get more donor meat and salad.
(I don't understand why most kebab houses don't do tahini sauce)😋
That’s a good tip. Very rarely see a tahini sauce in my experience.
@@GreenoEats The best that I've personally had are in Berlin. Enjoy Austria and hope that it's to review food. 😊

Back in the day there's no way you'd ever eat one sober though - probably the days before the Food Hygiene ratings were introduced!
@@GreenoEats that's why the main word sober 🤣🤣
I like kebabs but I had one in the German kebab restaurant in Portsmouth and did not like it either.
Average at best aren’t they. Just bland.
@@GreenoEats would be good to see you do the above especially popeyes thats quite an interesting branch as very mixed reviews
I was really diappointed with this - just bland
What a disappointment, haven’t had a kebab in ages, loving the channel keep up the good work
Yeah it wasn’t great but at least now you and I both know not to bother with GDK 🙂 Thanks for the kind words.
I don't go near kebab meat at all. It's suspect to say the least.
That's fair enough - I guess there is an element of "mystery meat" to it !
Yourself and Gary, whom i saw review it, also says it's disappointing, i know now to give that place a wide berth.
Better to spend the money on a tasty kebab from your local in my opinion!
Definitely agree.
That looks like what we call a gyro here in the states. I like the traditional lamb meat.
Yes, much tastier with lamd
I had dorito donna in Huddersfield like i said never again
Seems like a lot of people have tried it, and now want to steer clear of
GDK is an American chain. If you’re German you’re aggrieved that they use the word German. I had good experiences in the first year when they opened here. Went back a year later and it was shockingly poor.
Are they really American? I didn't realise that!
@@GreenoEats Yes according to a franchise owner here in Canada. They rely on weekly shipments of their meat and bread from the U.S. Seems a little inefficient.
Gary eats didn’t have a good experience at GDK either! X
So I believe, and I completely understand why!!
Alfred The Great......Top Man! ;)
Clue's in the name isn't it haha!
That kebab bread is just odd. This video has definitely not inspired me to try a GDK.
It's like a kind of waffle - a little unusual, but I didn't mind it. Just wish they'd put something better in it !
Well, there is a reason why the German Doner Kebab has no outlets in Germany. 😅
Yes, I think you are right!
What a bummer when a "specialty" restaurant drops the ball with the thing they are supposed to do best. At least the fries and rolls were nice. But then, they are not what makes the name. Its "German Doner Kebab", not "Fries and Crispy Rolls". Better luck next time, Mr. Greeno.
Yep - if you're gonna specialise in one thing, you better make sure that one thing is good right !
To be fair I've never tried one but from all the reviews on UA-cam and friend recommendations they're definitely something to avoid or in today's speak , swerve 🤣
Lamb kebab with a few scoops...win ,win 👍
Yep, few pints and a proper kebab, that’s what it’s all about 🙂
Gave GDK up a while ago. So disappointing. New subscriber.
Hi Paul, welcome to the channel! It was my first time trying GDK, I won’t be rushing back!
Thank you for the welcome, Greeno. Your collaboration video with Gary Eats brought me here. I gave GDK a second chance, haven't been back since.
Is it only me that's never eaten a Kebab? 😁
Never? Wow. I guess they had a bad reputation back in the day, so lots of people stear clear even now.
I've never had one either just doesn't appeal to me

Looks like a shocker that Greeno! I'll stick to the little family run Turkish and Middle Eastern spots I reckon. 🥙
I've only reviewed one other kebab on the channel, from a little back street place in Weymouth - ten times better than GDK !
I've never fancied GDK. It always looks too clinical. I'd much rather support my local independent kebab shop.

Hi Greeno, I totally agree with you about GDK, one visit was enough for me too. At my local kebab shop you'd have got that for about £7/8, not including the spring rolls. Better luck with your next eatery.
Yep, the one other kebab I reviewed on the channel was from a little backstreet place in Weymouth and it was 10 times better than the GDK one
£11.48 for a kebab meal isn’t a bad price nowadays - hope it’s better quality than the crap we used to enjoy after the nightclub! 😂
Hmm…maybe you should stick to remembering them from the good Ol days! 😂
This was dreadful, give me a proper kebab shop doner any time ahead of this!
Welcome to my channel 🙂 Whereabouts in Wales are you? I used to live in South Wales for about 12 years, in Magor, Cardiff, Newport and Caerphilly.
@@GreenoEats Cwm Tyleri, near Abertyleri - Abertillery if preferred. Obviouskly know Cardiff and Newport well. Caerphilly not far off either.

I do not agree 😂 We have a lot of delish meals. But, like everywhere, it depends where you eat it and who cooked it ❤
I've found a couple of regional things in Germany I like - especially around Frankfurt - the Hankkaese mit Musik and the Gruene Sosse - otherwise it's pretty functional (although I did have an amazing chiliwurst at a Wehen Wiesbaden game once!)
