- The legendary Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top joined Social Distortion onstage for "Drug Train" at the House of Blues Sunset Strip on December 15, 2012.
Listening to and seeing this is as close to being in church as I'll ever get. Billy Gibbons brought down the Commandments and Mike Ness spread the Gospel.
Searched for Billy Gibbons as ZZ Top have been my favourite band for over 30 years and I saw this. Loved it and began to search out more SD. They, too, are awesome - can't stop playing Sex, Love & Rock 'n' Roll album.

It's been over 35 years since my first ZZ Top concert, and they are definitely one of the best rock/blues bands ever (I would say the best). And Social Distortion is fucking excellent. Just started listening to them, but wish I'd found out about them sooner.
+klondike316 We may have missed out on SD at the time but what a back log of songs to enjoy! I've seen ZZ several times but, being in the UK, SD doesn't appear that well known. Hopefully, I'll get to see them.
Yes, that’s a great album start to finish. A lot of feeling there. “don’t take me for granted” is about Dennis Dannel, a guitarist who cofounded the band with Mike and was in the band for about 20 years before dying young from an aneurysm.
Their 2 best albums are Somewhere Between
Heaven & Hell, White Light, White Heat, White Trash. Sex , love & RNR is good, def one of my favs.
@@kustomhooligans In the past 5 years White Light, White Heat, White Trash has been my “go to” Social D album. I didn’t appreciate it much when it first came out but that changed. Not really sure why to be honest. Maybe I just relate to the lyrics more that I’m older? 🤷♂️
Social Distortion, what more can you say? Real bad ass band in the footsteps of Johnny Cash. Awesome to see Billy jammin with them!
Love it. It reminds me of "Roadhouse Blues". Billy Gibbons! And that guy on harmonica was killin it
lol at 0:51when Billy Gibbons says, "key of F?" and Mike is like, ya bro sure, idk wtf that is. XD
Woah fkn cool! Billy Gibbons and Mike Ness rippin together! fk yeah!!!
Saw Social D way back in 99' at Irvine Center, along with Offspring and a bunch of other bands - was a fundraiser for family of Dennis Dannell, and few years ago at The Knitting Factory here in Boise. That was a good show. In this performance here of Drug Train with a true legend Mr. Billy Gibbons, Mike and Johnny's singing sounded awesome! With Mr. Gibbons, yeah it sounded like the Sharp Dressed Man didn't have enough sonic room, so he put in some tasty licks and fills where he could fit them in. Before I came upon this video, I somehow had a feeling that Social D had shared a stage with Mr. Gibbons and sure nuff! He did an awesome job within the space he was given...
Imagine how bad ass this would have been had they chance to rehearse, all get in the same key, adjust sound and had Billy sing some parts with Mike.
For anyone who thinks that Billy Gibbons didn't give it his all, or that this performance looked awkward, I can guarantee that it stems from when Billy asks "KEY OF 'F' ?" .. Mike Ness capos his guitar, usually tunes to Eb, and making matters all the more awkward is that Billy will solo in F … Blue riffs like this are traditionally in the key of E, and anyone who has played rock or blues knows that the key of E allows you to endless open string soloing, which is a staple in blues .. Not to mention that playing in F is a half-step up and for any guitarist walking out on stage to jam on something, the neck suddenly looks alien in F when everything is usually a fret back or open … Billy Gibbons is a living legend, one of the best ever, but any blues based guitar player who walks out as a guest onstage and hears "KEY OF F" right before the song starts is gonna think "oh Christ, WTF " … There was a time when my band was opening for a fairly successful band, and the guitarist of that band called me up onstage, totally unplanned … I get up there with my guitar, and he says "Key of E" .. and I'm like "I tune flat, a half step down, let me retune" .. He goes "No time for that, just play it in F" and he starts the song ….. Awkward isn't even the word
Come on, just play f min pentatonic and you'll be fine. I'm a pretty bad guitarist but knowing your pentatonic shapes is really early stage playing. Sure e is more comfortable, but i think that should not be the Problem for a pro musician.
I thought that he just didnt know the song or the chords well enough in general. seemed like they didnt rehearse this together at all. But who knows.
Silent trouble I agree in that this was not Billy Gibbons' best showing .. He seemed like a deer in the headlights, which is surprising because he's been around the block and usually plays effortlessly ..
They didn't leave him much room in that song either, he could have played over it, but the harp took all the fills.
Just play by ear! Lol. That's what I do
Even when Billy is screwin up his notes, it still sounds cool... one of the greatest..
Its nice to see guys playing with mike and social D they really are a legendary band . Ive been a fan since 1980> Seen them at galaxy, cathay de grande , Tbird rollerdome many other spots in so cal through the years always great performance
Springsteen's has played with m7ke and sd
Really cool.
mike ness gets alot of respect. seen him play springsteen, eddie vedder, and now bill gibbons. he so well respected. too bad the mainstream never figured out social d.
I just love this video. It is an ass kicker tune!
It will make your friends and take your friends who never live to tell
Last night was the 1st show to kick off the summer 2015 tour. It was total energy on the floor. This video is awesome, one of my favorite SD songs, but it's funny when someone says Johnny 2 Bags before Mike introduced Billy Gibbons...that's a keeper
Mike the king. Yes I watched Billy in Lex, Ky.
When I first listend to "Drug Train" I already said "man, this song sounds like a song of ZZ TOP!" :D
My first thought was that riff of guitar and harmonica, roadhouse blues the doors
I'm a SxDx head and this is one of my top 5 cuts, and I'd forgotten how sick Billy is as they were a touch before my time...EPIC!!!!!
Oh hell yes.
como me gusta social distortion!!!! La mejor banda cheee... saludos desde Arg.
That dude influenced Jimi Hendrix ! That's how badass he is !
No he didn't. Jimi said Billy was one of the best. Moving sidewalks opened for Hendrix. Quit making shit up
Hell ya that is awesome
Billy is an ARTIST
This is awesome!!
i love how all these old time rock n' rollers like Gibbons and Springsteen play at Social D. shows and vice versa,. It's the ultimate passing of the baton to Mike. His Mike ever played with Fogerty?? John Fogerty was one of Mike's biggest influences. When You listen to songs like "Fortunate Sun" and "Sweet Hitchhiker," you can definitely hear the influence.
im usually a heart racing type but this is totally cool, i have always liked both bands and grew up on the two of them what an awesome combo!!!!
its like GOT ME UNDER PRESSURE crossed with everything social d is!!! I Love IT!!
The best band ever
not sure about that but i'll give ya this; we saw them friday nite and right now i can think of none better!!!!
I've seen them a lot but this song never made the set list. I'm thinking since it's one of their few blues songs that they'd do it for Billy, I guess.
Oh
Fucking Billy gibbons as simple as it comes ,you don't need to be shredding to be good just play with feel that's what makes great guitar playing
I want to see everyone thumbs up
Que genios... que grandes!!!

The Rev. Willy can punk out with tha Best of 'em, people!! He's supposed to miss a note or 2, wouldn't be punk if he didn't,.imo, anyways. :)) Great share. Thanks! C.
Yep...and if Hendrix himself said Billy Gibbons was the america's best guitarrist...who are we to say otherwise!!! hehe
This is true.
I would like to meet mike ness
That was great.. Who is blowing harp?
Rob Hornstein That's Eric Von Herzen . My brother in law 😊
eric von herzen
Kind of reminds me of the one Bob Dylan show, was in the third row and didn't recognize Tangled Up In Blue until he was halfway through, longtime Social Distortion fan but this is not the best version of this song
BFG!
Can you imagine how bad Billy's hat must smell? 40-50 years of road wear, ACK!!!
Awesome I think these guys could school three bad jacks any time
hard to stop this machine
Johnny “two bags” FUCKIN A RIGHT!! Take me for a little drive!❤️
Tramps were the baddest tho….
If you know,….you know…. js😀
EV!
but they dont light all their crap on fire!
Billy don't screwup no notes, your ear are bent
Well, Billy certainly didn't try his best. It sounded okay, but I expected more. It looked a little awkward.
I don't believe he (Billy) knew the song.
I haven't seen a surprise guest onstage look that awkward since I saw Joe Ely onstage with the Clash for the first time trying to play White Riot. Here's Ely white Stetson, white Western shirt with the bolo tie, white jeans tucked into cowboy boots trying to keep up with the chords at the speed the Clash played White Riot.
gibbons kicks your ass, who the fuck are you?
The awkwardness most likely comes from the fact that Mike usually puts a capo somewhere on his guitar and tunes to Eb .. This version being in the key of "F" makes the entire thing awkward .. Blues riffs like this as almost always in the key of E, as it gives the guitarist a totally different approach and allows them unlimited open string soloing … Key of F is not something any blues guitar will be ecstatic hearing when they walk out onstage to jam ..
I feel bad for Johnny on this one.
🤒🤠👻
not bad
de la bonne
Ur just trying to head or tail of the social distort
Mike Ness getting old like me. Losing hair like me.
Actually j 2 bags is the best guitar player in this band. Love ya Nessy, but he's a killer.
