Seriously Why does No one talk about that celebration? That was the GREATEST celebrations I have ever seen (Way better than this and Chase Elliot's burnout). He brings a watermelon beach ball and STARTS PLAYING WITH THE FANS! This is definitely my favorite season of the last decade. Total opposite of 2017 where Truex dominated singlehandedly. This time there was actually real competition. In the spring I skipped my college physics class (only time ive ever skipped class) to finish watching Bowyer win at Martinsville because that was more exciting than stuff I'd already learned in high school. In the summer I got to go to the second best Sonoma race I've ever been to (nothing tops my all time favorite driver getting his final win in 2016, although Pearn's pit road bluff was the best strategy play I've ever seen), and in the fall the best Phoenix race I've ever been to (where according to my friends who were watching, I apparently dabbed on live tv). And to top it off a girl I really really liked invited herself over to my dorm to watch Homestead with me and I remember her being so startled when I suddenly jumped up in excitement when my guy Larson slipped past Harvick to win Stage 2 because she thought I was kidding when I told her I really enjoy NASCAR. That was all before I began to experience why engineering is such a difficult major. Life was so simple back then...

Honestly, I enjoyed seeing Logano steal the title from the Big 3 simply because I was fed up with hearing about them all the time. The fact that it also exposed how broken the points system is was just icing on the cake for me.

@@zcams You're missing my point. The way NASCAR media wouldn't shut up about The Big 3 for most of season made it get stale. On principle, I agree Logano was less deserving, but the way The Big 3 was hyped up ad nauseam made them being upstaged feel cathartic. When I'm less entertained by the thought of a tight championship battle by three talented drivers than I am from a guy spoiling the party by exploiting a ridiculous points format, then there is a problem.

I mean while I agree one of the other three was deserving, Joey only wasn't comparable stats wise in wins. He was close in everything else.
However, here is my idea. Can we go back to the pre-2004 format. Nascar changed this to the chase all because Kenseth won with 2 wins, versus Newman who had like 6-8 I think. But Newman also had a ton of DNF that year. Imho, I'd rather we let the season play out and whoever clinches in whatever race deserves it. Winning should matter for sure, but overall consistency should to. That's what JJ did so well. He won but was consistent.
The chase has screwed drivers out of titles. Like I think Jeff would have 7, Harvick would have a couple more, guys like Edwards would have one. Formula 1 and Indycar have no playoffs and are just fine in crowning a champion.

    • @insideline2162

I don't understand how NASCAR could throw a totally fine points system they have for 3 decades in the trash. 2003 wasn't the first time someone won the title based on pure consistency. It's like they don't see all of the great championship finales Formula 1 and Indycar have had in the past 15 years running a points system that makes every race count the same lol.

I loved this result because Logano really deserved to have a Championship.
And i got really sick and tired of hearing all the time about the big three.
That's why for example i loved the fact that Suarez won Xfinity Championships because he was an outsider and that's the point of the current system, giving everyone of the 4 a real chance of winning the championship.

People take issue with the playoff format, but as far as I am concerned, its the craziest, most interesting thing to watch. It separates the men from the boys, in a sense. Yes, Crafton got the win this past year without winning all year, but that's the magic of the playoffs. Anything can and will happen. You could have the best season of your career, like Busch, Truex Jr, and Harvick did in 2018, but if you can't close the deal and get the job done by winning the championship, then it matters not. You have to be on your A-game EVERY week, and you know those tier lists with that "S" tier? Yeah, you gotta be on THAT level for the playoffs. Playoffs or not, it works the same way.

I honestly think NASCAR has managed to do better with this playoff format. Sure, it isn't always the case that the best driver and team go on to win it all, but please bear with me:
Joey Logano won the 2018 title because he was there when it counted the most. Sure, the 1 win all regular season at Talladega really puts you down compared to the 3 guys that have outright dominated the season so far, but Logano managed to keep his consistency up in the first two rounds, and went to victory lane at Martinsville when it mattered in the third round, and when he had to finish better than the Big 3 a Homestead, that's what he did. He brought a better car to the track than the Big 3, and he had a better strategy than the Big 3, and that's why he won.
Also, think about this: Let's throw the playoffs away in a sport like the NFL. Guess which team wins the Lombardi trophy in 2007 with 16 wins to their name? I don't think anyone outside of New England would like hearing that. To add on, in NASCAR, Jeff Gordon won 4 championships in 7 years under a format with no playoffs, and fans would boo him because he won all the time. Jimmie Johnson won 5 titles in a row with a format that was basically a 10-race regular season. Compare those to one of today's drivers who win all the time, Kyle Busch. He's won 2 titles under the playoff format. What will fans do if a driver like Martin Truex Jr, Alex Bowman, Ryan Blaney, or William Byron go on to win 3 championships in a row? They would be booed, but they aren't in real life because they don't win as much as guys like Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Joey Logano (except for Truex, he wins a lot too).
The look of what I see in a NASCAR fan is confusing and kinda strange, too. But the product NASCAR puts out is the most important thing in the end. Thanks for bearing with me.

Expanding on Fj Fj's point, the circumstances of football don't change game-to-game like they do in stock car racing does by going to an entirely new track every week. With the current system, a driver could theoretically perform "so so" throughout the year and win one race to get them into the "playoffs". From then they can just continue to race mid-pack until they get to one track they feel good at.
The problem with this system is that it doesn't encourage drivers to be better than most. It encourages them to be "good enough", which is the wrong way to crown a champion.

Believe it or not 2018 was the first time Kyle Busch won the most races in a season (8, tied with Harvick.) Harvick could have had a lot more, there were several races he lost despite having the lights out fastest car. Busch meanwhile won some races he probably shouldn't have, for example he was a 10th place car all day at Chicagoland. Harvick off the top of my head choked away Michigan 1, Texas 1 (a race that Kyle Busch eventually won), and got completely snookered on strategy at Sonoma when it was going to be a dogfight between himself and Truex. Also had race winning speed at Auto Club and was probably the only guy who could have had anything for Busch at Charlotte. Yes they both won the same amount of races, Harvick on average had a lot faster cars though.

2018 in my opinion was not a bad season. I think when you got 3 of the most hated drivers in the sport dominating (me personally have nothing against them) its gonna lead to fans calling the season garbage because a lot of fans out there are biased. Had this been chase Elliott, Ryan blaney and bubba Wallace that were the dominant guys then people would've been calling this the best season ever. People don't pay attention to the actual on track racing. Did it start off kinda lackluster? Yes without a doubt but it got better as the year went on. Especially when NBC took over for the rest of the season. Fans complained about the driver's that were winning and guess what....? We got a crappy aero package with reduced horsepower. Maybe paying attention to the on track product and judging the season by that instead of how you feel about drivers should be the way to go. It's a classic case of "you never know what you got until its gone".
