Jeep Cherokee Front Wheel Bearing Replacement

  • How to replace a wheel bearing (wheel hub) on a Jeep Cherokee. This Cherokee has a sealed hub unit. Older models have a separate bearing that require additional tools to press the old bearing out and the new one in. With a hub replacement, the repair should only take a half an hour barring any problems with seized bolts. I will do an additional video on diagnosing a bad wheel bearing in the near future.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hopefully, my 16 year old daughter and I will be doing this job this weekend. It is great that she can watch your video beforehand.

    I've watched parts of half a dozen other videos describing how to change this bearing assembly, I couldn't finish any of them. In a little over four minutes you told me all I need to know. Thanks

    Ashley great video. Short and to the point. Loved it. Btw, the axel nut torque spec is 175 ft./lbs.

    This video, alone, gave me the confidence to tackle this project myself. I was able to do BOTH front bearings, calipers, rotors, pads on my 99 XJ for less than half the price a local shop wanted for JUST the passenger side! My 99 XJ feels like a brand new Jeep! Thanks Ashley :)

    Just had to do that the hard way ( on the trial) last weekend because my unit bearing froze up. The lighting in the wheel well was a big +. It made things a lot easier to see. Might mention it can help to have the jeep in 4WD so the axle doesn't move when you torque the axle nut off. Oh and the axle nut torque. 105 Ft/Lbs. IIRC off the top of my head. I'd also suggest using some no seize on the 3 bolts that hold the hub assembly in and around the out side of the bearing to knuckle assembly. It's and interference fit so it needs to go in straight. Pulling it in evenly with the 3 bolts is the best way. The never seize made a world of difference in my trail experience this last weekend. Nothing beats a competent Jeep Gal! This one was much improved over the ball joint video! You're awesome. I enjoyed watching. Keep it up!

    Hi Ashley. We have the same Jeep although mine is a Minnesota one that I drove to California....not without incident. Thanks for your video on the bearing replacement..I got the pleasure of replacing mine recently, and I used your video to walk it through. I love my Jeep and every one of the 266,757 miles I put on it. Hahaha. #MNMAN

      +Danny Netherton I would suggest having someone step on the break while you try to get the nut loose. Or put something under the tire to keep it from spinning. Thanks a bunch for watching and for the comment!

    Wow... That just came right off... I came inside to see if there was any trick to it since mine's stuck tight. Guess I need a bigger hammer...
    The new sealed hub units are convenient to replace compared to the old ones, but boy are they expensive compared to the $15 bearings that you can put into older hubs in 10 minutes with a few sockets and a hammer...

      I apologize as I'm just seeing this comment. I had to use a 5 pound sledge to get the hub assembly to separate from the knuckle. The camera I was using for this video had some operational issues, so it may not have caught that on video. I will do another in the future. Thank you so much for the comment, and for watching!

    I really like your step by step video it really helped me in replacing my wheel hub. But I was wondering how do you replace the cv axles? Is that the part that slid out when you pulled off the wheel hub? Do you just simply slide out that part and put the new axle in? I Would really like to know thank u.

    • @ChickBuilt
      @ChickBuilt  9 років тому +1

      Shadrach Hanohano The part that came out after the hub is what you're looking to replace. Though it's not a cv axle, is just an axle shaft with a u-joint. You'll likely end up needing to replace the u-joint itself, unless there are damaged splines on the end of the shaft that sits in the front differential. to get the shaft out you take the tire, caliper and rotor off, remove the axle nut, undo the three bolts that hold the hub (bearing) assembly in, and the shaft will slide out. Removing the hub may take some effort as they're usually stuck on there pretty well, but with some patience and effort it'll come loose. Thanks for the comment, and let me know how your repair goes! :)

    • @ChickBuilt
