Heilung would be a fun one. Music videos are so good, the live performances are sick too. All the instruments are like skin drums and rattles, stuff from Viking era, bronze and Iron Age.

    Eivør singing "Falling free",
is one of the best and most beautiful songs I've ever heard besides Dimashes performances. With a full band. On a concert. And man, she knows how to handle a guitar 🎸. Seriously!! I mean it. It's Eivør at her best. Best regards from Norway 🇳🇴

Her "beatboxing" is the Scandinvian version of throat singing, we share alot of musical heritage from central Asia. Both our instruments and the throat singing goes thousands of years back and we can trace its origins back to as far away as Mongolia. Its tribal allright :)

Eivør is from the Faroe Islands - a group of volcanic islands about half way between Iceland and Scotland, and with a total population of just over 50,000. The islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark. She is an incredible vocalist and sings in both Faroese and English. She provides all the background singing and tribal vocalisations to the Netflix Viking drama series ‘The Last Kingdom’. For one of the truly great live performances of all time please do try ‘Eivør - Falling Free (Live at the Old Theatre in Torshavn)’. She sings that one in English.

    Lyrics:
("Troll-bound"= like how we would use the word "spellbound" in English.)
    Trollbound am I am I
    Trøllabundin eri eg eri eg
    Wizard stuck me stuck me
    Galdramaður festi meg festi meg
Trollbound deep in my soul in my soul
Trøllabundin djúpt í míni sál í míni sál

Í hjartanum logar brennandi bál brennandi bál
    Trollbound am I am I
    Trøllabundin eri eg eri eg
    Wizard stuck me stuck me
    Galdramaður festi meg festi meg
Troll-bound into the root of the heart into the root of the heart
Trøllabundin inn í hjartarót í hjartarót
My eye was fixed on where the wizard was standing
Eyga mítt festist har ið galdramaður stóð

    • @Fomaster
      @Fomaster 4 місяці тому +1

The linguistic similarities between Icelandic and Faroese are striking, with both languages sharing common features. However, it's worth noting that the phonetics of Faroese align more closely with Norwegian than Icelandic

    • @tcf_iceland
      @tcf_iceland 4 місяці тому +1

@Fomaster in writing, Faroese is a lot closer to Icelandic than Norwegian. The further north in Norway you go, you'd find it pretty easy to understand Norwegian if you spoke only Icelandic. I've managed to read whole books in Norwegian without ever learning the language, I'm Icelandic. But listening would take some practice.

Nice to see how the power of music unites... Eivor is a one-of-a-kind gem.. last summer, I visited her home town Syðrugøta, a small serene and quiet place nestled in the many fjords of the Faroe Isles. It was gorgeous as with everywhere on the 7 or so islands located there. Her family still lives there, but I think some of her sisters have relocated elsewhere like her. She's now living in Copenhagen with her husband, former bandmate. She loved doing live podcasts chatting with her fans and doing improv performances (esp. during lockdown).. perhaps you can catch her doing it some time soon ;)

Her "throat singing", what BP called beat boxing, is inspired by inuit throat singing that inuit women often do in duette form in a kind of "battle". They use a totally different technique then lets say Mongolian throat singers, and one thing is that they also do it on the breath in.
If you want to hear more of that search for "Tanya Tagaq" or just "Inuit throat singing" here on YT. It is a rabbit hole...

Eivør is from the the Faroe Islands, The national language of the Faroe Islands is Faroese. The Faroese language is a Germanic language which is descended from Old Norse.
But its shot on location in a fjord in Norway, my home country.
If you want a pronounciation guide:
Eivør can be separated into Ei and vør, Ei is pronouned like the AY in Okay, and the Ø is like the U in butler, So its AY-VUR, with a little pronounced rolling of the R.
Palsdottir is pronounced like POL in Pole, så its POLs-Dot-Tier.
Trodlabundin its straight up Trod-La-Bun-Din, but the U in bun is more like the U in Music than in Bun :)
Palsdottir means daughter of Pal, and is her last name. And Trodla-bundin means spellbound :)

I loved watching your reaction to Eivør (she's from the Faroe Islands), she is a force of nature and listening to her singing is a spiritual experience. My favorite songstress of all time, angelic and at the same time such raw power in her voice. As a Scandinavian she awakens deep stirrings of the old Norse ancestry within me.
This is old Scandinavian culture, this is our old Norse tribal culture. There is another version with her singing this song and it's even better, try to find that. It's worth looking for.
You should also listen to her singing the Icelandic hymn "Heyr Himna Smiður", that is the most beautiful musical piece I've ever heard.

If I right remember this Live was recorded in a norwegian Fjord. I was there and is one of the beautiful things I saw. It's salted water. ❤

I've been discovering music from around the world for a very long time now. It has taught me how utterly restricted and unimaginative the mainstream music industry is in the USA and here in the UK. There is so much more that they pretend does not exist. It's sad. People are missing out on so much.

Curiosity is good! I won't tell what happens to cats. Cool reaction!! Eivør is faroese invited by Vamp, a norwegian band. The drummer is in this band.

I love her songs! Through her videos I also discovered Jonna Jinton and her beautiful voice. Then through her I discovered kulning and watched a lot of videos about that. The whole nordic culture is so fascinating to me (I'm from Germany).

"Curiosity killed the cat!" .... Yeah, but... _"Satisfaction brought it back!"_ Let's go! I've heard of Eivor a long time ago and haven't heard her in years. This immediately makes me think of the opening credits soundtrack to the series "The Last Kingdom" and I wouldn't be suprised if she was the one who performed it! (Edit: oh it _must_ be her, this is straight outta The Last Kingdom!)

The natural progression from here would be other groups like Wardruna, Heilung, and Faun. The folk/folk-metal genre is full of treasures.

Eivør is a gem! I'm stuck on her rendition of Heyr himna smiður, a pretty modern but oldish melody with a text from 1208 AD. But Trøllabundin is amazing.

I nearly suggested this before but wasn't sure if you'd be interested. She's a legend. Other stuff like this includes Heilung, Skald, Omnia, Faun, Kiki Rockwell, oh and Songleikr to name but a few 😊❤ love your channel always.

Eivor, as far as I know wants to evoke the singing of her ancestors and to your point there is as far as know the back ground to this song quite some level of evocation of earth and nature sounds. interesting review Pegasus.

Eye-Vor is how I've heard it, Pálsdóttir literally means Daughter of Pal or Pals in the patronymic naming system (trying to recall the long ago knowledge I vaguely know) Still common in Iceland and the Faroes. She sings everything from old folk to rock. a very lovely voice.

Runrig is the Rammstein of Scotland, in the sense that their songs are in Scottish Gaelic. For that tribal vibe, songs to check out: "Meadhan Oidhche Air an Acairseid," "Ribhinn O," "An Toll Dubh," "An Sabhal Aig Neill," "De Ni Mi and Puirt," and "Rubh Nan Cudaigean."
