    Welcome aboard Aer Lingus' new-ish European premium product, AerSpace. They don't market this as a business class and...it's sort of confusing...especially during the pandemic! I enjoy your trip reports more than any of the others. Yours are more comprehensive because you don't focus on just the plane, the food or the class you are flying in. As much as can be anticipated in the time allotted, you manage to cover more facets of a trip, from beginning to end, than anyone else on UA-cam.
    I am an American who had the privilege of living in England as a child, and I do enjoy your blogs. 😊

    I agree with you Paul - the old Aer Lingus livery is far more distinctive and superior to the latest rather bland option. Great video as always, thanks. I think also that the pre-clearance for the USA alone would tempt me to fly via Dublin.

    • @simonpilk
      @simonpilk 3 роки тому +7

      Fully agreed! Aer Lingus former livery was much better with the majorly green livery. It wasn’t broken so it didn’t need fixing. The same (in my opinion) applies to the Lufthansa where the former livery with a hint of yellow was really great and instantly recognisable, but it has been changed to something not as good.

      But dont you think that these planes would be more efficient (as in it wont burn as much fuel) if they have less paint?

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  3 роки тому +6

      They have the same amount of paint. Just different colours.

    • @TomCro73
      @TomCro73 3 роки тому

      I'd the same thought as others about the new bland livery - much quicker to repurpose, when airframes transfer within IAG. But I reckon the commercial impact of *any* livery is overestimated by its PR folks - witness the countless hues, good/bad/hideous, inflicted upon UK passenger trains over the years. Doubtful a single one of them has measurably impacted ticket sales. People remember the trips they took - and perhaps, the deals they got. Few really care about the paint/decals that they arrived within!
      Regarding paint density (i.e. mass per unit area) - I seem to recall that when United transitioned from their 'old old' gray/navy colors to the white/blue, final 'tulip' livery, cost/weight savings was quoted as being among major reasons for the change.

    I took an Aer Lingus flight from DUB to SEA in the States a couple years ago. The TSA pre-clearance in DUB is fantastic for flying into Seattle, especially on a Saturday, the busiest day for international flight arrivals in that city. SEA has such a small customs checking area that it routinely got jammed up pre-covid. I once came in from Dubai and it took me 3.5 hours from deboarding the plane to get out of the terminal. Also, the business class on the long-haul product is great.

    1:20 Been on that airline before and for me it was better than BA in terms on their livery and service. 3:40 The old green livery completely bodies the new Aer Lingus livery on the A333. It does look better on certain aircrafts like the A321lr and A320. Either way, I can't wait to fly on Aerspace on A321lr hopefully next year.

    My most flown routes was Berlin-Tegel (TXL) to LHR and back ( more than 40 times)
    Flew in September 2021 from the new BER to LHR. Tegel was for passenger nicer than BER. You had at TXL the checkin area next
    to the gate. When I flew to LHR from TXL and the departure gate was 5 I went to the checkin desk of gate 5 and after checkin I needed only 5 m to the gate,
    That was especially relaxing since the police came often late for checking the passport.

    For those looking, since the ban on non-essential travel from Ireland was lifted this week then the A321LR and A330 both with the business class seats are being used as AerSpace on a number of intra-European routes whilst there’s still minimal US traffic, so check your flights and you may see the seats available on Paris, Lanzarote, Malaga, Faro etc. Bar service is also available since the lifting of travel restrictions too.

    The dog-leg turn after Wembley, to reach the turn into line: I have done that a couple of times before. Perhaps when they quickly need a little more time on the approach? Your observation about DUB-LHR being your regular route, caused me to check my spreadsheet. Highest counts for Domestic = LTN-EDI at 46 sectors (23 returns). Europe LHR-MUC at 42 sectors. Intl LHR-JNB at 18. LHR always closet to home, thus a total of 120 departures from there across 55 years!
    Thanks for a great channel.

    16:09 Amazes me how much Wembley Park has changed in the last 20 years! I am from Wembley and the old twin towers stadium footprint is totally smuthered by the 'new' stadium and all the tower blocks and changes around it. Just to the right of it you can see Wembley Arena with the very distinctive roof design....again this was where if you werent a mega music band or star that could sell out the stadium you would perform at the arena instead until the O2 arena opened and then the arena became far less utilized for mainstream concerts.

    I remember back in the 90s having to go to Dublin for the day for a business meeting. My company booked me in business class on EI, but back then the divider between business and economy was simply moved depending on how many passengers were booked in business on each flight. I was on the first flight of the day from LHR to DUB, and the economy section consisted of three rows at the back...the rest was all business class! One good thing back then was that EI served a champagne breakfast to all business class passengers! 🍾🥂 😊

    Little correction that you are not pre clearing with TSA, but actual immigration and customs - CBP and Homeland Security. You deal with actual American officers just as you would in the USA, when you land there. They also do that in Abu Dhabi and some other places, and that was the reason why the iconic BA A319 all business flight stopped in Shannon as you all know.

    I just booked two tickets from CDG to DUB in September. This is a one way trip for us and will fill in a gap in the into CDG and out of DUB trip. In comparing flight options I had visited the Aer Lingus ticketing site several times. I was just about to order the better flight option and I noticed that the AerSpace class was almost the cheapest option. I saved 40 euros per ticket over what I was about to select. I don’t know the actual plane model that will be used, but we are on row 1.

    Everyone should be aware that this is NOT what AerSpace is usually. Normally AerSpace is just the front row of a standard economy class, they just don’t book anyone in the middle seat and you get free coffee and snacks on board and you get lounge access. It’s usually not worth the extra money, sometimes you can get a cheap AerSpace seat but if you already have lounge access then it’s just paying for something you already have and a guarantee no one will sit beside you.
    Also before covid this long haul plane used to fly once per week or so to Malaga so you could get “business class” to there too.

    The route I fly most is London-Hamburg. My sister always sits by the window on the way there to look at the landmarks in Hamburg and I always sit by the window on the way back to look at the landmarks in London. Sometimes I even spot our house!

    The plus is getting a ride on the A321Neo. But the service was bog standard for that route I guess. Maybe when the aircraft lives up to the LR part of its designation, the meal service and so on would make it worthwhile. I bet that thing climbed like a rocket too with hardly any fuel and gross weight.
    SAS did a similar thing back in the day between Copenhagen and London. There was a flight around 18h00 which on a Friday, they replaced the usual MD-83 with a longhaul B767 because they had sufficient bums on seats to make it worthwhile. That was always a scramble to get the good seats at the front. At least we got a meal on that flight but still identical to what you got on the MadDog.
    Approaches. I wonder if 9L and R were in operation until late in your descent and they reversed the flow. However, London is fantastic, especially a clear night. Especially a clear fireworks night! Frankfurt runs close second.

    I did Dublin - Newark return over the last week with family. Out in economy, return in business. Flying from our local UK airport to Dublin and tranferring was much cheaper and preferable to direct to JFK from our nearest hub - Manchester - also with Aer Lingus.
    The US customs in Dublin was excellent. Despite hundreds in the queue we were through in just 40 minutes and the staff were excellent at calling out connecting passengers who were getting close to their flight leaving.
    Plenty of room even in economy row 24, good in seat entertainment, although I slept for most of the trip! On arrival at Newark not even a passport check. Off the aircraft, into the terminal and down the stairs to luggage pick up. 20 minutes from off plane to transfer taxi to Manhattan.
    Business on return and a disappointment. Despite being a group of three we were booked in row 2 which has 4 seats, and not a double and a single seat behind. I checked the night before and there were business class seats available, so my hope was the adjacent seat would be empty. It was until everyone was on board when my neighbour arrived so business was full! He was an ex Aer Lingus pilot in his 70s and still had perks, unfortunately his wife had to sit in the back! He had flown 747s for many years and was also authorised to fly the 5 engine version which was used to transport engines around the world.
    We had access to the BA lounge in Newark so had decent food and some drinks before departure. Business class service was excellent, attentive staff and great food. My neighbour knew the cabin crew leader as she had 25 years service. My only disappointment was the return flight was only about 5 hours 40 min, with a couple of hours to serve drinks and food and tidy up I only had time for three hours sleep in the very comfy lie flat bed! I was happy to miss breakfast for an extra 30 minutes and woke as we crossed the Irish coast over Mayo.
    We booked in March and the business class return sector was £400, which was only £200 more per person than economy and well worth it.

    The approach to the westerly runways at LHR over the city is the best approach in the world. I always reflect on the trip I have just done, good or bad, but I also know the minute I leave LHR I am ready for the next one.

    Worth noting that BA have paid the license for IFE on short haul ever since the A350s arrived in 2019 and they were being used to Madrid.
