  • The burden of healthcare expenditure is a matter of grave concern to India, where millions still remain below the Poverty Line- with not even a full day's meal to survive. Even then most families refuse to take up Palliative Care and resort to expensive, painful but fruitless drugs and procedures. Palliative Care has still not found its way into the Indian Medical Education system and as a result, the future population faces the threat of undergoing rigorous and expensive health care, even when it may not have results.
In this talk, Dr. Chitra highlights these concerns, while also describing how a state in India successfully managed to come up with a comprehensive healthcare plan encompassing palliative care. Learn how Palliative Care is not just an end-of-life option but can be integrated and adopted into regular health care not only by doctors but also accepted as a viable alternative by the patient's families. She is a member of the National Faculty in Palliative Care in India and will talk about how Palliative Care should not only be limited to terminally ill patients, but should also be provided to patients who have hopes of survival. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Amazing discourse Dr Chitra. Much needed and I would say urgently needed. Less than 100 likes & a very few comments prove very few are interested or don't care. I am not from a medical background but have heard or seen people dying in pain without their consent. I would love to connect with you Dr Chitra on this to take it ahead in terms of spread & knowledge , allowing people not only to die with dignity, alleviate their pain, but also for all diseases that are not life threatening but which come with a lot of pain to body as well as to the mind. Once again, kudos to you to have touched upon this topic which seems so far , taboo in India.

An excellent, and compelling, presentation Dr. Chitra. I hope that the matter of children's quality of living with chronic illnesses and their comfort, quality of life, and lovingkindness at the time of their dying - free of pain and enriched by the presence of an accepting family, receives attention in India as well.

Very coherently put across. Indeed palliative care is an aspect of healing that needs to be integrated into the health care system.
