  • Sven Kirsten wrote the Book of Tiki in the year 2000. It forever changed the way that I looked at art, architecture, and music. If you haven't read the Book, I would strongly suggest that you begin your tiki education right there.
Sven recently collaborated with Trader Vic's to produce a small book and mug that celebrates a very special style of tiki which was seen at the entrance of many legendary tiki places.
To make the the drink in the video you will need:
    --------------------------------------
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz fresh squeezed orange juice
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice
    1 dash (1/4oz) grenadine
2 dashes (1/2oz) creme de cacao
    2 dashes (1/2oz) orange curacao
    1 oz Italian vermouth
    1 oz 151-proof Demerara rum
1 oz 123-proof rum (Havana Club)
    --------------------------------------
Combine in shaker tin with small ice cubes. Shake vigorously. Pour everything into a 'Ten Pin Pilsner' glass and fill with extra ice.
    Garnish with fresh mint.

When people say there are no rules in tiki they are dead wrong. Yes, you can do whatever in your own bar but Sven documented what tiki culture was in Mid-Century America and that’s the stuff I love. Thanks Sven for all you’ve done and continue to do. And thanks, Matt for documenting what’s happening now and bringing us these great guests and cocktails.🔥🗿🍹🙏

Thats why all the bars in the NYC metro aren't so great; they all have to try their own spin on it, and they're all not so great.

Great show! I love hearing the history and how it connects to actual Polynesian culture! It's funny when I met my (now husband) and found out he was half Samoan and half Hawaiian I thought well he's gonna see my tiki mug collection and he's going to stop talking to me thinking im some weirdo whos into Polynesian pop. Quite the opposite, he loved it, started collecting mugs too, wanting to go to tiki bars. When his mom saw my Hawaiian print 50s style dresses she dug out bolts of fabric she brought from Samoan for me to make dresses with. Eventually I asked him "you don't find it offensive or feel like it's culture appropriation?" and his response was Polynesian people are too chill to care about stuff like that. So hearing Sven talk about how us outside of the culture worry more about it being offensive than those actually in the culture think about it was spot on, at least for my husband and his family!

    • @BreezewayCocktailHour
      @BreezewayCocktailHour  3 роки тому +1

That's great to hear. I always find it comical when someone professes to speak for a whole ethnic group and say that tiki is 'offensive' to them. The audacity in that is insane.

Love the episode, so good to actually see and hear Sven rather than just read about him and his works! Just a question on the "cocksmithing" side of things as the murky colour came up in the show, was there a reason you used brown creme de cacao vs white creme de cacao? The drink definitely has a reddish hue in the old menu pictures (which I'm guessing comes from the unhindered colour of the grenadine and Vermouth), plus Jeff Berry lists white creme de cacao in the grog log and Potions of the Caribbean. That being said I'm curious if the the trader Vic's bartenders guide specifies otherwise, and that Berry using the clear stuff is based off him going off the specs for the La Florida cocktail.

I enjoy most episodes too, but like think it misses the mark when you don’t have specific calls even down to brand of juice, bitters, etc not just rums. To present a drink that just willie nillie grabs bottles and calls it the same drink is just as bastardizing, especially bothered in the 1947 zombie. Like you know that had a v specific rum call to “make it work” and probably was lots of experimenting/wasting rums before finding the calls.

That lovely Mug Face Looks Like It's Borrowed From A 1930 Parisian Modernist Sculpture By Brancusi, Who Was Himself Partly Influenced By Impressionist Paul Gauguin.
FYI - Tortuga was the tiny legendary late 17th century Caribbean pirate island HQ wedged between Cuba, Jamaica & Hispanola - far away from anything Polynesian.
The island's name comes from describing the many sea turtles (once) found there & the fisherman on the tiny island who used a special wood rack to made smoked turtle meat- La Bocaneros -and the origin of the famous pirate nickname name; 'Buccaneers'.
