Another Mai Tai? [Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Surf Room]

- Yes, another 'Mai Tai...' At least this one comes from the guy who invented THEE Mai Tai. The whole concept was to have Victor Bergeron craft something delicious and palatable to tourists so the Royal Hawaiian could 'sell' the islands. They really could have named this thing anything else, but the Mai Tai name had such inherent value that they couldn't resist.
Thrifting genius, Jason T Smith, joins us to explore this mai tai and talk about the wild world of vintage collecting and selling on-line.
To make the the drink in the video you will need:
--------------------------------------
1oz fresh squeezed orange juice
1oz unsweetened pineapple juice
1/2oz fresh lime juice
1/4oz fresh lemon juice
1/4oz orgeat syrup
1/4oz sugar syrup
1/4oz orange curacao
1oz Demerara rum
1oz dark Jamaican rum
1oz light Puerto Rican rum
--------------------------------------
Shake with ice and pour into a double old fashioned glass.
Garnish with pineapple spear, rock candy stick, orchid, and mint sprig.

Great, informative episode, especially because I learned I'd been making the Surf Bar Mai Tai incorrectly. I don't know if it was a misprint or what, but my copy of Beachbum Berry's Remixed omits the Curaçao from the recipe. I made 2 back-to-back, one with Curaçao and one without, and can confirm that the Curaçao makes the drink just different enough to be better.
Richard “Jaws” Kiel is scared of Jason’s teeth!🤣 Jeez, that rock candy was getting munched like a 2 year old eating Goldfish!! 😲 🪨 🦷
I dont know why...but I dont think this guy likes tiki
Squeezing like that is a tried and true technique. It’s how you milk cows!
I totally been binge watching your videos for days now.
CORK BLASPHEMY!!! He's got a reason though. THe reaction was priceless!
you guys are so funny. loved jason's head inside the barrel lamp at the end. and that TVs blue glass with gold!! make some more why don't we
The more mai tai recipes the better!
Following up on the cork discussion, two things: First, it may be heresy, but a good screw top is probably the best closure for a bottle of spirits or wine. Second, if you have a corked spirit bottle in a dry place, you can turn the bottle upside down for a couple of seconds every once in a while to moisten the cork (but if you leave a spirits bottle on its side like a wine bottle, the high concentration of alcohol will destroy the cork).
I'll admit, I'll binged watch breezeway cocktail hour at work. 10 hours of sitting at a table polishing machined parts. Sometimes I'm not really watching, I just my earphones in listening to the history of tiki and stories of your cool friends.
Nice version of the Mai Tai. Cool guest!
I live in Cleveland. We should all meet up in my garage -- AKA -- Tommy's Hideaway.
Undertow is legit. Nice seeing the love for it.
Well that was fun.
Jason made me laugh many times thankz for a fun show Spike.
Thanks for talking about the Restaurant/Tiki Bar in Columbus, Ohio. I loved that place!
Man, I just got into cocktails this year and I really didn't get the whole tiki thing until I saw this channel. You are awesome dude.

Love the banter, I OD on all the stories.
Don't freak out, I've been binge listening to your show while at work. I love the history and your guests have been great.
