- Sony FX3 Cinematic BTS Film - Video Footage
A behind-the-scenes look at the film we shot for Freedom of Movement in collaboration with Sony. I had a lot of fun shooting with the FX3. With my monitor and handles attaching directly to the camera via the 1/4" threads, it felt like an extension of the camera. Shot using the 24-70mm F/2.8 GM and the 35mm F/1.4 GM

Woow freaking awesome. With minimal team and still 100% perfect. Love every bit. The bts made me appreciate the content more. Bravo!!
Thank you so much, we wanted to prove that you can do more with less, we had so much fun!
Freaking Amazing BTS! Love your clips, also the a7s iii was such a banger!
Thanks so much, the BTS was shot on the A7sIII :)
Amazing video! Colors are lovely! Looks like Cape Town. Most pro looking video so far on UA-cam shot on FX3 or A7Siii! Super impressive!
Thank you kind sir, yup it's Cape Town, your words are most encouraging! Thanks!
You guys did an amazing video. I thought it was such a huge crew behind but I as the bts and I was wtf!! Well done
Thank you so so much, probably the best comment I've received in a long time! Thank you!
Fave me chills! Awesome work man

This promo is the reason I got a 24-70mm👌🏾😎🔥
Bro that's huge! Thanks for telling me that :)
You are underrated! This is not fair. Perfect balance in Story, Transitions, Grading, Movements, etc. - Subbbssccrriiibbbeeee
Yeeeew thank you so so much, really means the world to me! I just dropped a video on how I grade this footage ua-cam.com/video/mTOYQ11JJzo/v-deo.html
Waou ❤️
Thank you!
This is 30% gear and 70% talent....awesome job...
That means so much to me, thank you!
Again, your work is awesome!!! Did you use the gyro stabilization when you went handheld without the gimbal? If so, how much did you crank up your shutter speed?
Thank you so much James! I didn't use the Gyro Stabilization just the In Body IS.
subscribed 💯
Whoohooo thanks for your support!
What diffusion panel did you use at 0:42? I like how it keeps some of the contrast of direct sunlight but at the same time keeps it under control.
It's an 8 X 8 Scrim Jim Frame with 1/2 stop diffusion. Using more than a 1/2 stop will lose the natural feel of the sun so it worked out just right.
Very nice behind the scenes video. Really like your rig, could you tell me more about it?
Thank you Dennis, I tried a variety of options but the handles are Cinevate which gives me pretty decent stability, the rest was Gimbal and the handle that comes with the cam.
Could you please tell me if you turned the active stabilization and the standard stabilization off for the gimbal shots? They look so smooth! And of course, it is such a great video! 😀
Thanks for your kind words! I only used the standard stabilisation on the Gimbal, I feel like the active sometimes gets it wrong.
great video Jacques !! what are those double handle ? interesting
Thanks Giuliano! It's actually my old Cinevate Handles from the Cyclops, not sure if you can still buy them but I love it.
This looks great!! What memory cards did you use?
Thanks a ton James! I'm using the new CFexpress type A Sony Cards
Very cool! What handles were you using on the fx3?
Thank you so much! The handles are old Cinevate handles but I love them!
Beautiful. Did you use NISI variable ND filters? It looks like Nisi on the BTS. You list Freewell in the description as best. Do you prefer Nisi or Freewell? Thanks
Thank you so much! Yeah I did on this shoot but right after I got the Freewell ones, I prefer the Freewell A LOT MORE!
Wow. great work. what side angle being used?
Thanks, much appreciated. What do you mean by side angle?
@@jacques_crafford sorry I meant side handles
could you please let me know where I can order the side handles?
Hey man! Which shots were the 35mm? Just the ones in the intro?
Hey Stephen! Yes only the few in the intro :)
Hi Jacques. Your videos was extremely useful for me! Thanks so much. Because of you, i decide to buy an Fx3 because i need a good autofocus when i use a gimbal. But i have a question and will be great your help. I see that the best codec to get the most out of the FX3 is the XAVC S-I 4K but if you want to do slow motion (in S&Q) is mandatory to use CFexpress cards wich are so expensive. I wonder what is you way to do slow motion? You use the CFexpress cards? You use XAVC S-I 4K always? Thanks so much! Best regards from Spain.
Thanks Jaime, I'm grateful to have your support for the channel. I hear your dilemma about the expensive cards but depending on how much grading you want to do, it's not always necessary to shoot XAVC-I, I often shoot in XAVC-S and XAVC-HS. For slowmotion I prefer not to shoot in S&Q and then XAVC-HS is a great option since it's a more efficient codec!
@@jacques_crafford Thank you so much for your time. I assume then that you make your slow motion recording at 60 or 120p and after interpretate the footage as 24p. Thay way you could use sd cards.
Please what picture profile did you use..this is beautiful ❤️
Hey Samuel, from the video he shoots in Slog 3 cine gamut with the Phantom Luts applied. I've used those lots before, and while i like grading images manually, they look freaking awesome when applied
@@gregk1075 is right, I shot all of it in S-log3 with the Phantom Luts and it works for me in most situations but starting from scratch will still give you amazing results.
Thanks so glad you like it!
@@jacques_crafford Amazing work mate! Which version of the phantom luts did you use? The A7SIII versions presumably? Thanks
South Aaaafrica spotted. Filmed in Cape Town
Wait just a minute... how do you have the new 35 gm already and mine is still on delay even though I preordered it😕
Aaaaw sorry to hear you're still waiting. I got it from Sony to review :)
What kind of computer do you edit on? im in the market for something that can handle both 4k and 8k
Budget?
I'm actually editing on the new M1 Mac Mini, it's a beast and it's super fast!
Was that shot internal or external via Atomos?
I only used the Atomos as a monitor, all internal!
@@jacques_crafford I am impressed that the regular 10bit 4:2:2 internal recording looks that good.
@@jacques_crafford Is there any reason why you chose to record all internal opposed to recording external with the Atomos?
hey jacques,
youve used obth a7siii and the fx3
color/image quality wise
are they any different?
Honesty, there's no real difference although I felt like the S-log3 is a tad bit cleaner, no "scientific" proof yet but these cameras really differ in functionality rather than IQ.
@@jacques_crafford slog 3 is cleaner on the fx3 you felt?
i see...my biggest gripe with the a7siii is the digital sharp look, i hope the fx3 has somewhat less digital sharpness
@@jacques_crafford thanks for the reply man!
Wow. Manual or auto focus? Thanks
Thanks so much, it's pretty much AF for everything :)
Hi,Where did you get those hand grips at?
I got them many years ago from Cinevate :)
What handle grips were you using ?
It's actually my old Cinevate Handles from the Cyclops, not sure if you can still buy them but I love it.
I see... it's all lighting and spun to make light softer. Not really camera.. well sure it helped a lot. But more just softening the look. Did you use a mist filter as well?
No I didn't use any mist filters but when shooting natural light (which we did for the entire film) it's only wise to enhance the light with some modifiers.
Bro what is best ? Sony FX3 ? Sony A7SIII?
Bro! Honestly they are exactly the same camera. The FX3 has some nicer features (internal and external) but the final image that comes out of both cameras is identical :)
what handles are you using?
And what is the point of those handles? They are so high for nothing, it can only make you tired more quickly...
Cinevate?
@@GuillaumeB7 I found that it gives me really steady shots the way my arms are locked in.
Nice! What you used at 0:35?
Thanks, that's just a Cinevate handle attached to the bottom which gave me extra support to hold the top handle
Parece que usaron el 24mm GM y el 24-70 GM, pero no estoy seguro, alguien lo sabe?
Yes that is correct, most of it on the 24-70mm F/2.8 GM
@@jacques_crafford Thanks!
What lens is that?
It's the 24-70mm F/2.8 GM & 35mm F/1.4 GM
Who needs a 1st AC right? haha
Haha the times they are changing. Few years ago it would have been impossible to produce something like this with a small crew we had.
Outstanding. What is the name of the song
Thanks Vimal! The song is called "I'm back" by Royal Deluxe
@@jacques_crafford thanks brother.
You can do all this with the A7s3..just saying..
True, but you would need a cage / top handle. I personally think this is an amazing addition to the line up and I like the form factor so much. Each to their own.
@@monolithpoem I got a cage and top handle from small rig for less than this, plus I have an EVF. But creatively they are the same camera, so there shouldn’t be any creative envy from us a7siii owners
@@earlstudios You're right but there is a HUGE difference between both cameras: there's no _"cinema line"_ mentioned on the Sony a7s3!!! 😃😃😃
Yes you're 100% right, it really comes down to functionality and preference. At the end of the day I prefer this camera over the A7sIII but if I only had an S3, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.
Which gimbal is that
Hey it's the DJI Ronin S
@@jacques_crafford do the fx3 fit on the rs3 ?
Anyone know the gimbal?
Dji Roinin S
Cheers.@@juannewhyte7416
That's the one, thanks@@juannewhyte7416
What codec did you u use? XAVC-SI etc?
Definately can reccomend XAVCS-I - Handles just like pro-res from my BMPC - if not better!
@@andyhardyfilms Do you see any color/image quality difference between FX3 and A7siii?
@@dathofilms hey! Essentially the same internals, the difference is the functionality and layout of the body, I’d say if you find your self using a camera cage on the a7siii often then this could be good for you due to all the thread mounts on the body!
@@andyhardyfilms Thanks a lot for taking time and replying. By the way your work is outstanding. Keep doing what you are doing!
I shot in all the codecs to see how the camera performs. Honestly even XAVC-S performed super well as long as it's 10BIT!
0:42 what's the name of that diffusion?
It's an 8 x 8 Scrim Jim (1/2 Stop)
Sony fx6 or Fx3 😬
Do you need the IBIS? (Personally, I do for live session concerts.)
Do you need the Electronic VND? Or could an external variable ND do the job for you?
Do you need to have DCI 4K, an SDI connector, and Timecode internally? Or would you use them only in a fiction setting with an external monitor like the Ninja V, which allows you to have them all and more (Prores Raw and focus assist for example)?
It really depends on what you need it for. For most of my work the FX3 is perfect but sometimes I'll need an FX6
