Roland Tiny Desktop Synthesizer Jam - TR-6S and Aira Compact S-1 synth pairing

  • I bought the Roland Aira Compact S-1 to see if it’s a good target for starter synth nerds who just want something fun to jam in, travel with and compose song ideas. I love it for certain things but felt it truly needs a companion percussion module… that’s why Roland offers the Aira Compact T-8, but I already have the TR-6S … bigger but more powerful (me thinks)… so this is a first jam attempt…
S-1 is strong as a sound tweaking melodic sequencer but I feel it absolutely needs that percussive partner.

Nice video! What is the signal chain here?
How do you connect them together?

From what I remember, midi clock out from S-1 to TR6S and both independently audio out to mixer… I usually add those notes to these videos but missed that here!

This is great! I've been pondering the S1 as my first non-plugin/app synth, any good reason I should reconsider? Its closer to in my budget and most of my music time ends up being on the couch with a little midi controller these days.

It’s definitely a budget-friendly and space-friendly (and travel/couch-friendly) synth - and has strong sound design features. The things that make me less excited are: 1) that only one sequencer track makes me want another box alongside most times, like the T-8 perhaps. 2) the patterns store BOTH the single patch/sound AND the sequence - so if I want to change the sound on the same sequence, I have to re-dial in the sound, I can’t just load a saved preset (pattern) without also overwriting the sequence….
I’m also not sure yet how much memory there is for automation - as yesterday for the first time I got a “full” message during jamming - but haven’t looked into why yet, and I changed direction with my tune before getting a chance to investigate… but 64 step sequencer and sound controls are strong!

@rochefsky Thanks! I do think having a sequencer with the features you say this one lacks would be nice if I only have one device available for a long time. There's a lot in the microfreak/mininova type price range to consider if I'm patient.

What cables do I need to work the s-1 and tr-6s together? Confused about midi type a vs type b, any knowledge you could share on this?

almost all Roland devices which support TRS-Midi use TYPE A - so I use a regular midi cable on the TR-6S side and a TRS Type-A adapter on the other side.
This site - minimidi.world/ - has a table of many manufacturers use of the type A or type B standard... not sure about the accuracy, but has worked for me when I needed it - otherwise I just look at the manual for the specific device.
