I make music by night and create tech products by day. I collect music thoughts and learnings to share on Rochefsky.com
Experimenting with music composition and learning everything I can about sound design, music, instrumentation, sequencing, sampling, hardware and software synths, Digital Audio Workstations (Ableton mostly).
I also create accessories for my home studio - and yours ;) - at homestudiostuff.com
I love collaborating if you have ideas...
I work with Synthesizers mostly these days - Moog, Teenage Engineering, Arturia, Novation, Roland, Korg and other popular brands, with a specific interest in indie devices and experimental music creation devices. I also play guitar, but don't have enough formal training on any of my instruments.... Trying to change that later in life (aka NOW) ;)

Teenage Engineering EP-1320 Medieval - ALL SOUNDS demo & Instrument Overview
Teenage Engineering launches the second in the EP series today with the introduction of the EP-1320 Medieval! Following on the trend they started with the Pocket Operator series, this second EP device has a theme, which leans into Medieval sounds, demonstration songs and graphic treatment on the device itself and even in the documentation.
While many will criticize the launch of a new device that so closely follows the prior in the series (the KO II EP-133), perhaps this opinionated approach to sampler/sequencer devices could inspire new music that would never have been made with the more general approaches taken in so many existing devices. Listening to the demo songs on the device is inspiring toward this end...
Time will tell whether the EP series continues along this path of theme-based instruments - and hopefully the next few in the series, in addition to having theme-based samples, will also introduce sound-making and song-making features which are theme-aligned.
If you have ideas of what the next theme should be - please leave it in the comments!!
My first guess: 80's punk bands... or maybe even a license deal with one band - like Echo and the Bunnymen, or even more mainstream rock, like Pink Floyd or Devo... so many choices...
This video provides an introduction to the device, a summary of the similarity to the EP-133 KO II, and an audio demo of all the sounds and taste of every one of the 9 demo songs!

The Korg NTS-1 mk II is a new version of the original with an improved keypad, arpeggiator, new effects and synth models, and a bunch more. The newest firmware update from Teenage Engineering on the TX-6 Field Mixer - firmware version 1.2.12 - includes Sampler and Looper features... but are they really enough to be useful on this otherwise highly-functional and high-quality device? TX-6 Sampler feels more functional than the TX-6 Looper... but you decide. Thanks to @Khordmaster who seems to have broke the news (at least for me) abo...

It’s not easy to pick an all-in-one groovebox from the huge array of options available on the market - so this video compares the EP-133 and SP-404 MkII - since they present different price points and different feature sets… I use a visual presentation of the Sony, pattern and sound data on each device since that has a large influence on the workflow of the two devices. The original is way better and the samples of this will be about in a few weeks
Anyone even remember what cheap Monday was? I just pulled mine out the retro bank.
"Down, down, down by the river"
$300 for this??? That's just silly...
THANK YOU!!
You’re welcome ☺️
so $300 for a novelty sample pack?
Brace yourselves - wave of medieval themed mediocre dance songs is coming!
Ok, is this real, or just a really elaborate joke?
These sounds are horse cheeks…..
Crippled sampler with a read-only sound pack? I'd much more appreciate a decent sampler with paid sound packs. The environment would appreciated it too. It's like a smart phone with one decent app preinstalled and a no room for much more. Don't get me wrong, I do see musicians having fun with this, it's just the technician side of me that screams in horror.
Useful video, sucked all curiosity out of it for me thank you. I think a lot of people don't get these units, the limitations are the essence of the design. Even a 404 is too complex for its own good, better to just use Maschine or a DAW. The idea of hardware/DAWless is to have fun. Here they locked in the silly sounds to prevent anyone from redefining this as a non-medieval KO2. It's a novelty item, my first impression was April Fools joke, but they may sell 1000 mostly to people who never make music largely as something cool to have on the coffeetable.
Thanks for the video, So how much storage do you have to add your sounds?
32 mb
My Mk. I of this lasted about 8 weeks. The PCB is a toy. Hopefully they improved the build quality, or lowered the price. Don’t plan on having this at Xmas if you buy it this month.
My MK I has lasted , but I haven’t used it as much as the MK II - both are definitely toy-like - but pretty powerful in my view and the mkII has been really fun and useful for me
@@rochefsky I think they’re toys. Fun, but not a serious instrument.
Just make it possible to increase the memory on the original KO II. 68mb is worthless. It has 1000 sound spaces but the memory is full at 300 sounds.
64Mb definitely has been a limiter…
More of The Wicker Man(1973) vibe than The Holy Grail(1975). A mean fat rich Medieval teenager who is ready to be sacrificed😑
I’ve got a movie to stream… thanks!
"Taking Retro to its logical conclusion"
Mighty boosh fan eh?
@@anthonysherwood9863 I'm old Gregg! :)
So they took something that they could have put into one box and now spread it out. So you spend $300 10 times? Because it looks like all that's really different is what's in the solid state
They locked up the memory so it's the same, we're in an age where where you know they could put at least a couple gigs of memory in there, I'm just thoroughly convinced teenage engineering goes to a China trade show finds manufacturers of older hardware. That's cheap, then pays a guy a lot of money to make it look cool.
Such a weird release. I don’t know what’s going on with TE, but medieval sounds are something I’m not into lol. And imho the device looks hideous.
…but does it have a “‘‘tis but a scratch” button?
The men in tights version
😆 OMG
Missed out on calling it Midi-val
Brilliant! Perfect to make Rennaisounds…😶
why the fuck would anyone want this lmaoo
I’m not asking the guy with the huge swords and body armor…
I'd like to see JG Thirlwell rework his Black Ships Ate the Sky remix only using this thing!
Googling that…. I want a Who collection and device features that mimic Townsends strumming speed, Moons drum patterns and maybe a Daltrey Vocoder LOL (actually Pete Townsemds Ironman is what inspires this bigger ask)
@@rochefsky Some quick Keith Moon fills from Can't Explain era Who.
@@sludge1298 awesome start to endless ideas!!
Kind of seems like gimmicky bs in lieu of any real substantive upgrades. Why would I care about a locked in sample set when you can load whatever sanples you want on the ep133?
Similar in approach to the PO series but at a 3x price point - very fair question
Pulling up to Ren Fair as a medieval DJ with this 😂
Selling them at the door! 🤑
chopping on 12 is lameeeeeeeeeee
That coulda been my key press miss rather than the sample…
@@rochefsky you sir did a great job: whoever at te hello microphone check teenage engineering. Nobody wants to chop 12 pads Lolo.
Yes m’lord
Will be using this to create music for my DnD campaign.
Perfecto
Exactly my thought. This makes me want to go roll up a bard. I like how it’s got sword swishes and knife toss sounds as well, along with person-getting-hit sounds. Even tavern ambience and secret passage opening sounds. And a fire breathing dragon. This is *made* for Dungeons and Dragons. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to hear it on D&D streams.
It’s a cool theme, but I was really hoping for more of a PO Arcade II or Robot II.
I would love to see those themes repeated in the EP series - especially if they come up with theme-aligned features rather than just sounds
I will never understand people’s fascination with stuff like this.
I’m still trying to understand my own motivations - but so far the learning new devices is part of it… this one didn’t have much new learning after the 133
Ok it can play the Witcher 3 soundtrack. But can it play Ameno and Mea Culpa?
Googling…. 😝
Skyrim be like, 'you lack the perk to improve faders'.😊
😝
Elf needs food
Ill state the obvious, how is anyone able to read the panel unless they were a Latin major?
Yeah this was a “bold” move … for EP-133 owners it’s easier to remember what’s what, but that points to how similar the devices are
I thnk they maybe taking the piss out ot you all.
Bardcore
This should've been released on 1st April 😅
They should do an emu sp 12 version, Teenage engineering Rock.
Love it - the key thing for me will be seeing them come up with features, not just sounds, which fit a theme…
@@rochefsky true, different pitch types, different compressors, bit crushing etc, exciting
My girlfriend would kill me if I played on that device next to her. Some of the sounds are extremely nervewrecking.
Witches, goats, tavern laughter and beheading? Yeah. I could see that. 😶
@@rochefsky I meant the instruments in particular. I also get the looks when I play with my chiptune synthesizers.
this is ticking all the boxes pretty soon...
Uh oh
A bummer they didn't do any actual early music--the composers have been dead for hundreds of years, so it should all be public domain. Could've had a kick-ass version of Robert Morton's "L'Homme Armé" or the Istampitta Isabella...
Great point about public domain! I feel a contest coming…
@@rochefsky One possible complication: it can be argued that what's in the public domain is what the composer originally wrote down (or had printed post-Petrucci). That might mean non-mensural notation, funky clefs and the like.Modern conversions to modern notation probably are copyrightable/copyrighted.
Stonehenge by Spinal Tap Medieval disco cover anyone?
Oh please! So many medieval remixes in the works I hope!
No sample of Sir Robin the Brave’s minstrels?
"They ate Sir Robin's minstrels, and there was great rejoicing!"
@@raygunsforronnie847 minstrels are a bit gamey. Not unlike grouse.
Interesting, not sure the £300 price point makes them quite as "gotta catch em all" as the OG POs
Agree that’s the main difference for a collector on this series…
If TE really wants to make people buy more than one at this price point, they will have to make them very different in terms of what they offer
why the hell would they not make the stock samples rewritable? like just make it a cool limited edition release no need to cripple it like that.
I definitely would have preferred that along with a restorable orig sound kit through their sample tool
Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Cute idea, but for that crazy price they should have included a larger memory for user sample, I mean seriously it's 2024
takes you back to the middle ages
@@Neoplasma I do kinda klike it, but it's crazy ha ha
Ooooh the Neptunes will fell in love with this thing!
