Firefighter uses flare gun to ignite fuels in a successful defensive burning operation

- A wildland firefighter working on an Initial Attack fires a flare gun in the vicinity of Lime Village, Alaska, to ignite fuels during defensive burning operations. The operation went as planned and Lime Village was protected from the lightning caused wildfires that were threatening it. Without the use of strategic defensive firing operations, homes and infrastructure would likely have been impacted, damaged or destroyed.
2022 Lime Complex Summary - Western Alaska Lightning Caused Wildfires
The Lime Complex consisted of eight staffed lightning caused wildfires and ten unstaffed lightning caused wildfires. The total size of the combined fires was 715,595 acres. There were 198 firefighters assigned to the complex. All of these fires were lightning caused. All unstaffed fires were monitored for growth and potential threats to identified values.
Highlights: Resources were engaged in structure protection near values at risk as well as evaluating opportunities to slow fire spread with line construction and aerial resources. All defensive and offensive operations were successful, protecting homes, tourist locations, village infrastructure and human lives.

Background: Staffed Fires in the 2022 Lime Complex
North Point Protection Group consists of the South Lime Lake Fire (#190)/Swift River Fire (#228), Door Mountain Fire (#244), Door Creek Fire (#273) and the Hook Creek Fire (#188) - 149,023 combined acres. Defensive firing operations to protect structures north of Fire #228 were conducted while conditions were favorable, and firefighters are mopping up the area today. Crews continue to engage in pre-treating areas ahead of fire growth to slow spread and defend values at risk in the Lyman and the Lime Village areas, as well as near Stony River, Trout Lake and Tundra Lake.
Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) - 258,693 combined acres, Lightning start. The fire is 35 miles north of Iguigig. Several fingers of continuous fuel having been burning together and producing more smoke in the area, which impacts firefighting efforts as aerial resources are unable to fly and visibility is reduced. Firefighters are working to secure structures with sprinklers and hose lays, as well as slowing fire growth with water drops along the Mulchatna River.
Aghaluk Mountain (#206) - 116,342 acres, Lightning start, point protection and structure protection are ongoing. The fire remains 51 miles east of Aniak. Resources from this fire are providing support to fire #228 as well as planning for future threats in the area.

This style of strategy was used close by my home. Cal fire had a control burn that jumped from the section they were buring, and a 27mph wind blew, and the fire just spread. Luckily, all the cal fire firefighters got it under control overnight.
Yea we normally have hand crews or additional assets on standby incase a controlled burn gets out of hand.
In Louisiana we have controlled burns in our forests to eliminate all the ground fuel.
@Dee12346 yes it is necessary. It's also the reason we don't have as many forest forest in the east. California has mismanaged their forests for too long and they'll never be able to keep up again. We just did a 70 acre burn a few weeks ago, everything went perfectly.

@@goranjovcic6962nature usually burns the forest but you can't control when or where lightning will strike. So, they do a controlled burn to keep nature from making a BIG fire that can't be controlled. Also many forest seeds such as pine need fire to release them so they can grow into young trees. These controlled burns do not burn everything.
Lots more sparks than the ones I've seen before--do they use specialized flares, different from the usual signal flares?
Most likely burns a lot hotter and a lot more intense, give it more of a chance to catch
Wildland Firefighter here! It’s called a Very Pistol, it’s a special wheel flare that’s made of Magnesium burning very hot, and spins like a top!

It probably uses magnesium or some other flammable metal in order to give off such sparks.

This doesn't work in a house fire situation I'll bet .
House fires aren’t in massive open areas with tons of fuel to burn. It’s restricted by the house. Unlike a wildfire
I got the chance to be on upper lake Mary while the firemen did a control burn around the lake, it was awesome being able to watch fire shoot those same type of flares from their boat, also got to wake board during the controlled burn it was really awesome and got some really cool videos and pictures from it.
Back burning we used a similar method on the YELLOWSTONE FIRE in 87/88 from CASS job CORPS for 31 days

No you’re burning all the fuel the big uncontrolled fire needs to spread.

It's because it's unsafe to send some one out to ignite it with a drip torch.

If you burn up the fuel in the direction the main fire is heading it will stop any advancement because there's nothing to burn! I used to do backburns but with a drip torch not flares.
Fighting fire with fire eh. Just fell fire lines and use the material as biomass. Use a root ripper and level and wild seed the lines.

In control stub burning we used fan to direct flames if you increase size you could keep flames in one spot
Aren’t fire fighters supposed to put out the firs not light them?
Since 95 they brought back controlled burns since they found out (the hard way) that putting out every natural fire just builds up the fuel reserves until you get a fire you cannot control creating a firestorm hellscape.
It’s a backfire. It basically burns out the fuel before the fire meets it. Saw someone on here compare it to lighting the two ends of a piece of string. The fire will go out in the middle when they meet and there is no more fuel to burn.
Controlled fires can prevent further spreading of growing fires and can be a containment method

How about changing the trees from more fire resistant trees like broad leaf. Mix the population of needle trees used for dimensional wood and plant a boundary of broad leaf it burns slower and are not so tall. This gives the fire stompers to catch up.
