I am also inspired by how you did a detailed sketch first, as I have come unstuck with trying to go straight in with a paintbrush and then wasting time correcting misaligned features or even having to start again. I was taught to do a layer of paint (1 color, similar to your brown thin layer) after the underdrawing, which would focus on the values before the rest of the colors are added. Your approach seems faster and likely a better fit for me. The video was a helpful find.

I was taught a different method in art school (loose blocky under-drawing just to get a general idea of where shapes will fall, rather than a complete drawing, then working out details in paint) and watching this has given me more confidence that my desire/instinct to begin with a more detailed drawing as I would in a watercolor is definitely worth trying. I've been taking an oil painting class for the last year. Its only 2 hours a week so it's slow going, but I do enjoy using the oil paints. I have the same issue though, I tend to focus on the details too early so always trying to get back to being loose when I start out. Your work is great, the end product looks touchable.
Beautiful. I honestly have never tried sealing the sketch. I also use a burnt sienna wash for undertone most of the time (occasionally I go with a stronger red) so I'm looking forward to trying this method. I needed tips to paint MY furbaby. She's black though, it's a challenge. So beautiful, you are so talented. Thank you for sharing this.
