My granddaughter showed me your video , It is great, I made these in Las Vegas Nevada in the 70's and 80's,Had some of the problems you had back then, but like you we figured it out, Dont have to turn them that much because of the way we cast them Still making them a few times per year...But I like the work you do....
It would be cool to see like a "Nature Dip It" series, where Peter places different insects, small flowers, or small plants in resin or something. I think he could make some really cool things with them. Like if he put small flower petals in resin, he could make a pendent out of it or something.

I know the bugs are a pain in the butt, but if you catch a few extra this summer maybe consider making an "amber" pendant for a necklace? Or a bracelet? It wouldn't even need to be amber colored and/or the same type of insect. Just a thought!
It's likely the ones found in amber were alive when they got stuck. Probably drawn to and caught in the sugary tree sap that would eventually harden around them.
Hi Peter, if you ever need to make a mold like this again: instead of wrapping the wooden block in packing tape try sanding it really smooth then spraying it with lacquer. The silicon will not stick and you get a very smooth mold which will greatly improve how many times you can use it. I look forward to you video's all the best George

I was thinking the same thing. Amber is always irregular in shape, color, density, and clarity. This is too uniform. A couple of tiny leaf fragments or smaller bugs added would help the illusion.

I meant specifically the resin knob part, not the wooden cane. Or did you mean that the shape would have to be made in wood first to make the mold? Wood isn't ideal for making original positives. Even then, he could have saved himself shaving time. And a casting could be made any size you wanted it to be, even to compensate for polishing. As a prop maker, I guess I'm saying I would have gone about it differently. I was curious whether or not he had a specific reason for approaching it that way.
GreenGleem You're gonna have to shave and polish it anyway, so I think it's fastest to make a cube and then cut it, instead of making the mold the size you want it to be.

I use insects in my resin work, but only ones I find dead. But I'm a HUGE insect and animal lover. I realize most people don't think much of them. I feel bad for the bugs here, but your work is awesome. It turned out SO cool.

I meant specifically the resin knob part, not the wooden cane. Or did you mean that the shape would have to be made in wood first to make the mold? Wood isn't ideal for making original positives. Even then, he could have saved himself shaving time. And a casting could be made any size you wanted it to be, even to compensate for polishing.
As a prop maker, I guess I'm saying I would have gone about it differently. I was curious whether or not he had a specific reason for approaching it that way.
GreenGleem You're gonna have to shave and polish it anyway, so I think it's fastest to make a cube and then cut it, instead of making the mold the size you want it to be.

Those things only live a few days anyway. They inundate us for 7 to 10 days each spring then disappear.
@Andrew Jubeck They don't even have mouth parts, they dont eat anything. They fly around for 2ish days, mate, than die.
I use insects in my resin work, but only ones I find dead. But I'm a HUGE insect and animal lover. I realize most people don't think much of them. I feel bad for the bugs here, but your work is awesome. It turned out SO cool.
