Effects of Porn

- As requested by our donors, this is an episode on the effects of porn. While there is no causal evidence of aggression, healing, or change in perception there are many experiences people who consume porn have:
sensations of arousal
intense pleasure
changes in self-image
new body expectations of themselves or partners
desire for cosmetic surgery
acting dependent for arousal and pleasure
depression
fear
loneliness
divorce
more traditional gender roles
normal theatrical sex
expanded sexual knowledge
more experiences/experimentation
increases in communication
rise in sexual expression
self-doubt about the normalcy of their own sex lives
feelings of inadequacy or injustice about non-porn lives and partners
coercion to do what's on the screen
sexual harassment
exposure to sexual diversity (behaviors and identities)
sexual stimulation without rejection, infection, pregnancy, or criticism
...I'll share the reference list soon...
Thank you to everyone who made this video possible! Stay curious!
While I definitely don't think porn in itself is a bad thing, I do think sex education by means of porn is.
In my personal experience, sex education here in Ireland is pretty poor, and results in most young boys and girls getting their knowledge of the hows and whys of sex from the internet and from porn. This really gives young people from about 11-16(as the statistics in the video show) a very skewed perception of sex and it's realities and gender roles. I know for me, growing up as a young girl wasn't all that fun, and looking back, all of the misconceptions and pressurisations were ridiculously avoidable.
This is more a problem with education than with porn though I suppose. And part of why I think this channel is so amazing! Sex education and openness is really something that needs to be improved on if gender equality is ever going to become a true universal thing!
True.
Im irish too and the way they explained sex during the "Talk" was so bad.
They never explained masturbation, porn, ejaculation and a few other things.
Although I already knew these things since I was 8 (researching online by myself not porn ) I have to be honest that a lot of people simply don't understand it properly and it seems to be sugarcoated a LOT.
I agree. Here in Ireland I got mostly talks about puberty but nearly none about safe sex etc.
That's Catholicism for you pre Medieval Sky fairy nonsense.
I'm from Ireland too and agree that its teaching of sex education is shit. Especially since I'm only 15 and last year we learned about sex education it was cut in half because of covid
I freaked out when you drank the water. There is a BATTERY in that
coughdrop01 I didn't drink it.
sexplanations Oh thank goodness, haha
coughdrop01 Batteries are waterproof, in fact, they contain a fluid (the electrolyte) so it HAS to be waterproof or it will leak out.
Batteries will eventually start leaking because of gas forming inside the waterproof shell and when the pressure gets big enough. psssh... You can see when that has happened to a battery.
So if the battery's new and hasn't got huge amounts of harmful bacteria on the outside (which can just as well happen on a spoon, or in the glass) it's perfectly safe
I would really worry more about the key and where that has been, lots of sweaty palms, trouser pockets and/or purses.
coughdrop01 haha I didn't even think of it all I was thinking was "NOOOOOO that will stain your teeth!"
Tap water is conductive, wouldn't the battery heat up?
I know it was probably sealed and fine, but I would highly recommend not drinking water with a battery in it.
Dixavd I agree. Energy drinks aren't particularly healthy.
I don't think she actually drank anything.
Dixavd I was thinking the same.. except because of the key :P

One thing that porn helped me realize was that autonomy and self-respect is often less about what you do and more about the mindset with which you do it.
I had thought a lot about the arguments from people who argue for or against nudity in the media: Some claiming that if women allowed themselves to be seen as nude would give others a chance to objectify them, while others claimed it would constitute an escape out of restrictive, controlling social norms about how women were supposed to dress. In contrast, I heard people arguing that dressing conservatively would mean to escape our cultures "obligation" to appear sexy, while others argued that it was a way of falling in line with conservative expectations.
Porn helped me realize that a) any behaviour that you do, just because you either do or don't want to be conformist is equally lacking autonomy. b) The true autonomy lies in choosing a behaviour not based on considerations of approval or disapproval (aside from not harming others), but based on whether it's the right thing for you(!). c) Hence, nudity, sex, porn can be produced and consumed out of very different mindsets, some being unwise/unhealthy, while others aren't.
To give a very blunt example: I have seen clips in which the perceived attitude of the actress did fit right into the negative stereotypes of a naive woman being "used" as a toy by men who objectify her. And I have seen scenes in which another actress did the very same thing and yet it seemed like she was in control. I'm not even talking about differences in dominating or submissive behaviour, I simply mean in terms of attitude, like the difference between an emotionally submissive person who hands over a gift because they feel the need to please and another person handing over the same gift from a position of confident generosity.

My input: I enjoy porn, and I don't mind if my man watches it, with or without me knowing. I will say that sometimes I take a break and make sure I can get myself off without the use of porn or a vibrator. Kinda like cutting out sugar to refine my palette. ☺️ I went through a stint where it was quite difficult to get off without it, so I took a break. I think it's like anything, moderation is key.
Variety in general is good for the libido. Good point!
Exactly. Anything in excess may be harmful. If the chemistry is good between performers, I like that. I like to watch scenes where the couples are laughing. Watching porn is witnessing the primal energy and power of the human form. I find myself watching the expressions on performer's faces more often than anything else. Every one of those performers I've watched over the years is expressing his or her sexuality as a celebration of life.
Fuck that I say do it till you od
The last statement you made is esp true. Well said!
@@jackpinesavage1628 i enjoy porn too LOL

underrated comment
Wow, this reminds me of the controversy society has with violent video games. There are people who believe that they cause real world violence, but in reality the violent individuals that act out the violence, already have violent thoughts to begin with and use the medium as an excuse for why they act that way. This video has also got me to look at the type of porn I watch and how it relates to how I view sex. I tend to view more of the consentual and real sex porn over other kinds (though when I first watched it, seemed like any kind would do). Thanks ^_^ .
Flexor35 Wanted to voice my similar thoughts. This^
Flexor35 I'm guessing you like video games? Don't be a slave to your tastes. Video games can cause real world violence, just like movies, books, speech, theater and any other way of information transfer that humans have invented. Should we ban them? Well, maybe yes, maybe no. I am in the "no" camp, but I can understand the rationale of the "yes" side.
I know that our beloved video games, being the new thing, are wildly misrepresented, taken out of context and used as a scape goat all the time. We should strive to be understanding, and considerate. If we descend into fan-boyishness, we are no better than the people attacking video games, we're just on the other side of the barricade.
Rompo Stotski Did you watch the video or read his comment?
Rompo Stotski I was just making sure.
I understood Doe's and Flexor's arguments to be that porn/video games are simply media through which people can express their already-existing thoughts and desires. I'm not sure fanboy-ism is involved...? I think it was more a "video games are on my mind; oh, I can see how Doe's comments on porn could also be applied to the video game debate."
Bryan Berry So, it goes only one way, huh? Never, in the history of humanity, has anyone been convinced to do something they otherwise wouldn't have done, after using some sort of media? Its always people on their courses, driven by their inner selves, never swayed by the things they experience?
Remember kids, porn can be educational, but it's not obligatory.
Films can be serious documentaries or just fiction.
Also, don't expect to experience sex through porn the same way you don't expect to experience a car chase through hollywood movies.
It's just a start up for your imagination, not a real life experience.
If you are having troubles gasping the concept, I suggest you to go back to your parents and ask them to explain to you the difference between life and fiction again.
lloydgush ...unless ur lucky and meet a filthy minded woman like my now fiancé who loves it visual like a guy.
It can and does happen👍🏽💕
Porn, like all “pleasurable” things in life MUST be enjoyed in moderation. Gluttony leads to addiction.
no. it depends on the person. some people like me, don't get addicted that easily.
I agree with you, Cathy. I believe most people form addictions due to a lack of a sense of connection., and feeling of isolation. If we can't find an intimate genuine connection with a person, we'll find connection with anything that trips our dopamine production. With the advent of internet, and technology, porn is ubiquitous and accessible like never before, including to children.
Gluttony has nothing to do with addiction. The two concepts are very different. Gluttony is social precession that a person has or consumes something more than is socially acceptable. It applies to physical objects like wealth, food and trash. Addiction is a compulsive need to consume something, typically after being exposed to chemical compound that triggers the brain psychologically and physiologically. This apply to medicine and chemicals produced in the brain naturally like oxytocin, cocaine, alcohol, etc...
Gluttony can be compared to charity. If you have so much that you can easily donate something without any personal sacrifice and loss. Then you had more than you needed and were being gluttonous. As such it is a moral concept based on judgements of right and wrong.
Addiction is a medical condition, and should be treated as such.
The *psychological* effects of porn, you mean. You missed the one important thing I wanted you say―the physiological effects! Porn induced sexual dysfunction! The physical inability to maintain full erection during normal sexual encounters due to routine over-stimulation. It's very common in young men, and I have experienced it.
+pbrown7501 And do you extrapolate the "very common in young men" based on "I have experienced it" or is there solid research?
Because, personally, I could give the opposite example that porn has actually increased my appreciation of "real" sexuality and of "real" women, by which I mean that the constant presentation of "perfect" looking actresses & the the typical porn scripts has actually increased my appreciation of something that differs from the movie magic. Simply because it feels more real. Porn is still stimulating, but it can become mindnumbingly fake.
A cursory googling would reveal that yes, it's not just me and the false consensus effect. yourbrainonporn.com/research-confirms-sharp-rise-youthful-ed
I know the url makes it sound like biased bullshit, but it cites legitimate sources, so go ahead and have a look.
I've experienced it MANY times. I don't care anymore because I stopped dating completely many years ago. Now I have no drama, no rejection and no performance anxiety. And I have way better orgasms and saved tons of money on dates that went nowhere.
50%-99%? What the hell kind of research is that?
It's a round up of studies that have shown different results based on methodology. One survey isn't producing that range
iii But even a very large number of studies normally wouldn’t have that huge of a interval.
@@bobcat24 They absolutely could. A study of opinions or beliefs can have such wildly varying results each time you run it, because humans just aren't straightforward

My ex had a boyfriebd before me who thought he was a master of sex because of porn. He was her first sexual experience, and when she got with me, she also acted like in porn because she thought that’s what sex was. I started researching sex ed youtube channels (we had a joint account so she would get the notifications as well) and I found this channel. It changed a lot to our relationship. Thanks you so much Dr. Doe!
Thank you for this segment, Most of my relationships enjoy having porn thrown in as a kink. But my last girlfriend was completely intimidated by it and I was chastised by her. I am a firm believer of diversifying my sexual life with my partner. Especially now that I am over 50
I think I agree with the beginning quote. My job is to counsel sexual offenders and pornography can be a great escalating force for some of them to abuse and then they go to worse places. I also emphasized to others that pornography can be used in a healthy way as well. I get it.
This video is so timely. I was just recently debating giving up most porn. I'm a fat cisguy (gay), and I'm starting to feel like most porn is just too toxic for me. The other day I watched a few things with fat guys in it, and not only did I find it hot, I found that I felt much better about my own body after watching that type of thing. I still find the other stuff hot...but I'm reminded of a quote from a cheesy tv show (Witches of East End): Just because something feels really, really good, doesn't mean it's good for you.
Ur comment made me throw up.
Bryan Garcia Ur comment gave me cancer.

andar90 There's nothing wrong with feeling good about yourself. On the contrary it is the greatest weapon for self improvement, after all one feels far more eager to work hard at change if they are motivated by confidence and well being than by frustrated bursts of catharsis.
***** "sensual" is also a good tag to look into, it can get cheesy too, but it is more romantic i guess... And I also find lesbian or solo stuff seems far more real than a lot of hetero things I have watched.
Pornography has so much potential as a tool for education and healthy risk-free sexual expression and experimentation. Which is exactly why i have such mixed feelings about the industry as a whole, and think it needs to do a lot more growing. The prevalence of corporate stranglehold centralises the power towards those who control the capital, when the power should skew a lot more heavily to the performers and sex workers. What i'd love to see is a push for unionisation in the industry.
Soooo... why the food color?
Because this episode's about porn

I just read Living Dolls: the Return of Sexism by Natasha Walter and it made me pretty concerned about the effects of porn on men and the way they see women. I was more positive about porn before but now my eyes are opened to how damaging it can be and I don't know how to feel anymore.
***** Keep in mind some books or other materials might focus on specific aspects of the porn industry to the exclusion of others. It is easier to point out the negatives of pretty much anything after all. Your eyes have been opened to one view of porn, but reading about it through the lens of another might not give a large enough view to actually claim to be seeing the big picture.
Compare and contrast some of the damaging effects you've read about with some of the positive effects Dr. Doe showed. Do some more research if you'd like. As with everything it's going to be complicated.
But I think the conversation should be acknowledging what harmful effects porn can have both on the people making it as well as the people viewing it, and then looking to figure out how to minimize those dangers while boosting the benefits. If we're talking about exploitation then penalizing stuff like revenge porn comes to mind to discourage it. Google recently said it would honor requests to take down revenge porn search results. www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015/06/19/google-revenge-porn-search-results/28983363/
Other exploitations do include professional directors and such taking advantage of actresses by forcing them to do certain scenes. Getting rid of that partly involves the porn industry having policies that respect consent and allow the participants full autonomy to say they won't participate in a certain scene even after starting to film it.
Negative effects from the viewer's end should be thought about and considered by the viewer. They need to keep in mind some porn is fantasy and if they find anything objectionable about what they're looking at then they should at the very least ponder why it's objectionable on one end or simply stop watching on the other, possibly reporting the material for illegal activities and the like.
***** Nobody's forcing you to watch porn. Please dont force your fears on other people.
Jackalope In some states there are waiting periods for purchasing guns. I'm in favor of a two day waiting period after disclosing the script and planned actions for porn scenes. Then the participants have time to consider what they're consenting to and back out if they choose.
flinx Sounds like an excellent idea!
I haven't read this particular book but as for the title I'd assume it may be quite biased.
I'd like to say porn has led me to be open to nearly everything you can think of in the sexual setting. I often think about how you said you were desensitized during your studies, and I feel that has happened to me in a sense. Stuff I considered weird became less so the more I saw it.
I think the "floating" analogy was great. Not just in terms of our general personality that we bring into our consumer behaviour, but also in terms of the different mindsets with which the same person can consume a product, much like with the consumption of food, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
If I pay attention to myself and my mood, I do realize, for instance, if I'm motivated to go out with friends and have a drink as a way of adding enjoyment to an already good mood or if I'm motivated to drink as a way of compensating for/keeping away troubling feelings. In the same sense, I think porn can be completely healthy if it is consumed for the right reasons, while it may also be an unhealthy consumer behaviour to compensate for some personal issues.
As far as "healthy" is concerned, I would also argue that it is a matter of degrees: If a person goes through a stressful strech at school or work, they might choose to make themselves feel better by distracting themselves by watching TV and eating fast food. Now, technically, a doctor might recommend that this is not the ideal, most healthy way of dealing with stress and exhaustion, but it is not the end of the world either. In other words, it is not so unhealthy that it may require external intervention. If, however, a person compensates a lot of stress in this way and in an excessive manner, than the health effects might become so troubling that a change in behaviour is advisable. If, like in the case of excessive drug-based compensatory behaviour, the behaviour might even lead to the harm or neglect of others, a change in behaviour certainly seems necessary. This, however, may not just require the call for change, but the necessity of actually providing the consumer with outside help/support, especially if the person feels unable to change on their own. I think that porn-related concern are largely the same.
As for the issue of gender roles and image, I think porn could actually be helpful in normalizing people's attitude towards bodily/sexual issues IF people are not left alone with the material. If people are left alone with it and have no opportunity to exchange ideas on what is going on, there is indeed a high risk of people feeding their own preconceptions.
it's so satisfying to find a completely scientific and apolitical explanation of this.
What I have learned in my human sexuality classes is mostly that porn can do harm to young people who have no one to tell them porn isn't like reality. Porn shouldn't be the ONLY teacher on sexuality someone has (especially considering the amount of abuse and violence contained in some porn videos).
In response to your take Dr. Doe: Sure, it could be an industry that teaches healthy sexuality and positivity to others, but is it right now? Is mainstream porn overall a positive industry? Is there a link between mainstream porn as we know it and sex trafficking and other generally considered "negative" byproducts of the industry. Thanks!
Megan Jae Riggs Overall it probably is a positive influence, but of course more could be done to both raise the positives and encourage healthy sexuality while putting down the possible negative aspects like nonconsent and human trafficking.
That sounds like a topic for uni level thesis. Don't expect the answer in a video.
Porn does not cause sex trafficking. Porn is not sex trafficking. Sex traffickers, who produce porn, typically produce porn of a non-consensual nature. That isn't a negative byproduct of the porn industry. That is a negative byproduct of sex trafficking painting their illicit product as more acceptable.
The vast majority of porn is of a consensual nature, and if consensual porn didn't exist, sex trafficking would still exist.
That is because there are evil people in the world who enjoy abusing other people.
You can't blame porn for the evil actions of people in the world, and more than video games, movies, or drugs.
When society thinks something is causing people to be evil and makes it illegal to engage in, it creates elicit black markets, which gives more power to the evil people abusing the mediums in the first place and leading to an increase of the "negative" byproducts we were trying to get rid of.
This comes at the right moment for me because only last night I was at a conversation between my conservative South African aunt and my (much more open minded but still) mom. My aunt actually said that people who watch pornography are more prone to 'becoming pedophiles' which to me sounded so weird and ridiculous. It's indeed not an effect of porn but an effect of a person, who already had those thoughts and then sought out pornography.
I liked the video, very informative, but I also think maybe you should talk about the reality of the porn industry, where it COULD be purely informative and pleasurable, but the reality is many many of the people in the industry are abused and forced into it, and their reality is not fun or interesting
I love the pace of your videos. Lots of information, useful and unbiased. Thank you.
A few comments I'll leave mostly trying to be constructive.
- I wish your videos were longer. An average of 5 minutes makes these vidoes feel more like fast food than education. I know I know every single person on youtube says keep your videos short. This is an education channel you're not doing "the 10 things asian people hate hearing" this is not buzfeed. Better for page views worse for me the viewer.
- I really wish this video would have gone into some depth about the physiological changes associatied with porn. As a BA in sociology I found the research nearly impossible to sift through myself. Considering how many religious groups are associated with the "anti-porn" or "downsides of porn" arguments finding the information was really hard.
- I would love to hear who's behind the pro's and con's of porn. Example. Second wave feminists discuss the victimization caused by the porn industry. Christian groups may chose to focus on the sinful aspects of porn. That sort of thing would be interesting to me in particular. Not that these videos are made for me, but I like to think theres 1 or 2 people out there like me.
- I would love to hear your bias before you give your discussions. I know this would be a huge speedbump to the flow of your videos, but if you are pro-porn before reading the research no matter how hard core an academic you are the end result is probably going to be pro-porn. Unless theres some super damning research & you are awesome.
I doubt very much this was helpful? My goal was to give feedback. I love the channel and and hopeful for lots more content! :D
Love your feedback. I'm of that opinion too but I'm more grateful for the discussion that this has sparked up. One thing is clear. This is not a black and white issue as to whether or not porn is good or bad but more so the causality and pros/cons of it.
-Educational videos don't have to be any longer than is needed to cover the topic. Again, educational videos don't have to be any longer than is needed to cover the topic.
-This is a video on the effects of viewing porn, not the effects of porn on society. This video covers many things that happen to people who watch porn. Most of the negatives are associated to the shame and guilt individuals felt from viewing porn. Which typically comes from societies judgements about porn.
-This is a video on the effects of porn, not who is responsible for the anti-porn movement. Dr. Doe wants to break down societal stigmas where it is good and strengthen stigma where it is beneficial. So she has a rational middle of the road approach. She says consensual porn is okay if you want to watch it, everything else is definitely not good. It is a wonderfully refreshing and balanced view based on research and health.
-This is a video on the effects of porn, not how Doctor Doe personally feels about porn. Although all of us know she not into shaming people for normal human feelings about sexuality and sexually stimulating materials. She says so in the video. Which tells volumes about what Doc Doe's bias. Doc Doe isn't pro porn or anti porn. She believes everyone shouldn't feel guilty for having watched it, and if people watch it they should consciously be watching consensual pornographic materials. She wants to destigmatize porn viewing that was created through consent, and put an end to nonconsensual porn.
But what about the effects on the actors?
lyadmilo Great question!!!!
lyadmilo Rapid increase of moolah and/or dosh.
lyadmilo In some cases, people are exploited. I'm not ok with that. But the vast majority of commercial porn is totally voluntary, drug and disease tested, and above board. I don't hate clothes because a few Chinese kids were forced to make some.
Qermaq I agree, it's generally great but there are some extraneous examples
lyadmilo What about the effects on coal miners?
Every job has it's advantages and hazards, it's up to the individual taking the job to decide if they think the advantages outweigh the hazards to them.
Also, in the LGBT community, watching porn that reflects ones own sexuality can be affirming, show you that there are other people who identify similarly an help make sense of your sexuality while sex education classes fail to do so.
"It is like porn, see, because you get WET." A++++ punning, I cackled.
Great video Lindsey and Matt. This was incredibly informative without being judgemental or bias. Keep up the amazing work.
Congratulations! this channel is amazing, you even take the time to reference properly with annotations on the video, I love that (Y)
Im glad i found this channel, i feel like sex is such a taboo, i can barely ask anyone about sex without being made fun of, called horny n stuff but like, i recently went to see a gynae n she talked a bit abt masturbation n sex n stuff i felt so stupid abt my own body
what does "50 to 99%" mean? is it because 0 to 49% of men lie about it? or because they watch porn that might not actually qualify as porn?
pete275 Varies per study as they were made in different locations. I don't think the people conducting the study are going to spy on people to see if they lied, friend.
pete275 That's the margin of error. All studies have a margin of error.
pete275 It could be a few different things but the main possibilities have been covered by A bee and Qermaq.
Some more insight into those answers: Given how difficult it can be for American people to talk about porn much less admit to having seen it or regularly consuming it, getting an accurate picture of who watches it is difficult. Some people in certain locations are more likely to be open about it than others. There are also different methods of obtaining information but none of them are 100% accurate without being illegally invasive.
pete275 It's a result of numerous different studies producing inconsistent results. Ethical Review Boards have all sorts of strict standards about how to handle experiments with human subjects, especially related to sex. So one could potentially have a survey where you are alone in a room, a room with other survey takers, a room with survey takers and an experimenter, an online survey, a survey where your teacher is proctor, and more. That's on top of variances stemming from time of day, time of year, what outfit you are wearing, and more. The social pressures in these different environments will make people respond differently. So results are a bit more all over the place than other areas of research.
I've seen this on many educational sex shows. When referring to porn they almost always seem to be talking about produced porn with actors/models etc. There is a HUGE percentage of porn users who watch amateur porn much (or most [or all]) of the time. There aren't going to be any unrealistic body images or expectations there, because it's real people really masturbating or really having sex because they really wanted to in that moment. I don't even watch porn with directors/actors etc. So from my perspective, those aren't even an issue.
Stumbled on your channel, love your knowledge and playfulness. Thank you for your great work.
I think porn saves you from having to go through the heartache of rejection and the turmoil that comes with most relationships. It can discourage one from actually pursuing a relationship, as in myself. I've watched it since I was about ten. I'm 36 now and have never been in a relationship. I've tried in the past, but after getting rejected 1000+ times, and not even getting as far as hugging a woman, I gave up. I do experience those symptoms of loneliness and depression from time to time but I get better at dealing with them. It can't be any worse than the person in a relationship who worries about their spouse cheating on them or lying to them. But I can't compare since I have no experience with the latter.
This is exactly what I've been saying for ages. It's the same with all media that has been criticised for causing violence and stuff. It's not the media, it's the people.
Also, was there any reason you dyed the water yellow, because it seemed like you were making a reference of some kind...
Another amazing video. Thank you Dr. Doe.
May you talk about shaving? You know, down there? Is there side affects? Does it help arousal? Is it safe?
Amber M. Hello! I am no doctor by any means, but from what I've learned on the topic, the total removal of pubic hair can have a few side effects. Since the layer of hair is meant to protect the genitalia, "naked" pubic areas are more susceptible to infections (think vaginal infections for women). Moreover, the act of shaving can irritate the skin and leave it more sensitive to infections as well. However, shaving is totally a personal choice. You are the only master of your body hair and can shave it, wax it, trim it, laser it, cut it, etc. as long as you are careful not to hurt yourself. The only thing to remember is that pubic hair is not inherently "dirty", as some people believe, or unsanitary. Oh and when it grows back, boy is it prickly!
Shaving keeps away pubic lice
orayole Shaving your head keeps away head lice.
Amber M. How can a person with access to the internet ask this question? Its like not knowing if France is in Europe.
I'm asking this question because on the internet there's a lot of perverts and creeps that will write a bias opinion on this topic. There's also a cultural barrier too where certain things are a norm, like completely shaved, and there'll be a lot of clashes between these two options. People either write "oh it's gross it'll stimulate pleasure more too so shave it all off" or "oh it's bad for you men are disgusting you should grow it out". I want someone to tell me the full picture. No lies, no cultural influences, just pure facts.
The use of annotations for footnotes is a fantastic idea. More people should do that!
People that use porn frequently, especially males can cause their arousal threshold to change. That can make it difficult for them to be aroused by real women. This has been seen more often by therapists and while "Porn Addiction" isn't a diagnosis porn abuse certainly should be.
I love your channel you are always educational and you explain it so that just about anyone can understand and enjoy it.
I know these videos are each a huge undertaking from research to execution to editing but I do wish this had gotten more time than 3:36! (I wish all your videos were closer to a 5 minute mark at least. Selfishly.) I felt the ending was abrupt! I'd like to hear more about your closing thought. When I think of the negative affects of porn, I don't wonder if it's causing violence. I wonder what affect is it having on the developing brains of kids and teens? What I really really want is for the subject of pornography to be included in sex education. The number of kids viewing porn for the first time before they've even hit puberty is astounding. I want them to have the tools to think critically about what they're viewing, as with any other form of media. I know it would have helped me and people I've been in relationships with, dealing with mixed feelings about porn (or struggling with dependent behavior), as adults. I could go on and on. Thanks for this Lindsey, but you left me wanting more!
karajfree More of my closing thought is on tumblr ;o)
sexplanations You wrote a study showed sexual assaults didn't increase between 1995 and 2005, however I wonder if exposure to porn is causing an increase in unhealthy sexual behaviors? Unhealthy as I define it means: 1) People who had abusive childhoods or varying amounts of poor parenting that manifests in their adult sexual behavior.
2) People who take away from watching porn it's normal to regularly be selfish and cruel. Some societies have spent hundreds or thousands of years trying to instill behavioral ideas many of us think of as good things, like sharing, being considerate, being respectful. Most of us want people to keep doing those. Porn could be instilling bad behaviors that were less common before. The equivalent of telling people they shouldn't share, be considerate, or respectful if they don't want to.
Fantastic well rounded view. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. YOU ARE Fantastic and a great knowledge source
Those citations fill my nerdy and skeptical of online education heart. I will read them if I have time and if my uni has access. Please do this more.
Posting a link to this on my Facebook wall would definitely make me lose a lot of fake friends. :P
But then you know who your real friends are.
The researcher in me loves the citations in this video. It makes me insanely happy. I must now go look up whether there is a paraphilia associated with my adoration of appropriate scholarly citation.
Such a great video! Thanks, Lindsey!!!
I don't agree with the sociologist. I've read so much research showing porn, which you showed half of viewers see by age 11, affects teens and their ideas about gender roles, teaching them outdated, harmful bullshit. You're not predisposed to being affected or not--in your teens you are VERY impressionable to these ideas.
I saw that there's actually no experimentation done with porn because the scientific community has affirmed that the shown dangers of porn are too harmful and effective, sorta like how psychologists can't experiment on children or biomedical engineers can't begin testing on humans until they've undoubtedly proven their science.
I worry for my generation who is growing up in the age of harder and harder hardcore porn. I'm sure a few playboy magazines don't ruin a person but porn where a girl acts as if she is being raped, forced into oral sex having a voracious audience of men concerns the fuck out of me. There's no way those guys wake up and still have healthy views about women.
I'm not anti-porn or erotica, but the way the sex is presented, I think, is very important. Mature rated fanfiction and softer porn are much healthier forms of pornography than rape porn or other types of porn where women are treated as sexual objects. And there's a lot of sexual objectifying in porn.
One last note: the reason why I think fanfiction porn or sex scenes in movies are such healthy forms of porn are because the people engaging in sex exist outside of the sex. They are dimensional people with lives, hopes, dreams, and aspirations that continue beyond sex. For ex., Katniss isn't just a sex toy, but she can engage in fun sex while you still see her as a nuanced human being. Very little sexual objectification there.
I've been watching porn since I was 10. If I didn't have an outlet like that for my sexuality at a young age, I feel confident in saying that I would be a grade-A piece of shit right now (meaning I would have a twisted view of sex as well as the opposite sex under the governance of western customs and my libido). If boys go looking for violent and "objectifying" porn, then there is already something else at play. I didn't like watching gangbangs at first, they were there and I knew about them, but they grossed me out because I had a narrow view of sex ("Girls are hot" is about as sophisticated as I got). I preferred lesbian material because the female body turned me on to no end - that's what I was obsessed with - and watching two girls make eachother cum was otherworldy. Today, I do enjoy watching gangbang videos every once in a while because I have a new perspective on it that I didn't have when I was younger, but when I WAS younger I at least got to see it and process it and know what I felt about it; that clued me into what my impulses were really about, "There's a sexualized girl in this video - cool, she is in distress and at the mercy of all these men. This bothers me, but it's still sort of nice; yet there is a sexualized girl in this video - also cool - and I love everything about it. It must be the one-sidedness and lack of agency in the first that turns me off and the mutual pleasure in the second that makes it so great. Or maybe it's just the men being there that ruins it? I should try watching..." Obviously I wasn't consciously thinking through it like that - it was intuition, but I would never have created a foundation or understanding of myself sexually if I didn't have ALL of that to sift through. Similarly, if a boy had excessively violent and twisted sexual proclivities, I'd assume that he'd be better off KNOWING that and keeping his mind over it instead of it leading him as he represses it. I guess you can think of it like growing your palette for music: start oblivious with chintzy material and a brand fixation, find stuff that happens to share some trace elements of that thing as well as EXOTIC stuff and so on and so forth, until you realize that your appreciation for music extends beyond brand or label and into the integral parts that make up all pieces of music (and you won't have to turn into those close minded, self righteous people who squirm at anything that isn't the one thing they listen to because it's "good enough and I don't know why"). Porn can do that for sex: reveal parts of a single piece of media that you didn't know permeated everything, reflecting something personal back in those concrete elements and using that perspective - which had shown you this greater order - to take charge of what you want as well as be receptive to the feelings and desires of others.
At any rate, I know that seeing hardcore stuff early on didn't preclude me from having a healthy view of sex and women - it did the opposite, but I was also an exceptionally empathetic kid to begin with so maybe I just got lucky.
Also, how you describe "there being very little sexual objectification" I would describe as textbook sexual objectification. Impressing upon someones image your own sexual kinks is a defacement of their identity. The familiarity that exists between you and that identity does not give you any more of a right towards using them for sexual pleasure. That is highly disturbed. People in porn, when done right, even in the most compromising positions should be embodying their own sexual empowerment. They are there to make something and have it be seen for what it is, what you describe is a perversion.
Dr. Doe, I just noticed that you listed references in your annotations! As a current student who has had to do a number of research papers, it is greatly appreciated!
P.S. could you tell those of us who are interested in sex therapy / sexology how you found your path to this line of work? I myself am very interested. Thanks!
A huge factor is indexation of content/exposure. If a person is bombarded with a certain variety of sexually explicit content (especially earlier in their sex life) they might be lead to hold beliefs about their potential partners' most intimate desires more based on what "the algorithm" thinks they want to see/hear than on reality. The internet tells/shows people what it thinks they want to see/hear/belive, and not a representative, properly sampled picture of society.
This video needs more exposure. We not stop generalising issues of human behaviour.
Yeah, because looking at gigantic numbers of people means nothing. If 100 million people all do something they didn't before porn... Yeah, totally bad to assume it's related.

You are right
to the publishers, please put the links of your citations in a more accessible area. When I go down to click on the citation you provided, it's covered up by the UA-cam scroll bar. I have no way of seeing of whether or not the information you're provided is valid or not.
No comment on PIED (porn-induced erectile dysfunction)? People, whether you like this channel or not, PLEASE at least get information from multiple sources before making decisions that could lead to severe trauma. I know she claimed to have researched both sides, but we are human and it can be difficult separating personal bias from fact, or even choosing what facts to share based around our personal bias.
If you're looking for more information as to the possible negative effects, try searching for "your brain on porn," "fight the new drug," and "r/nofap"
You listed three echo chambers as your sources...talk about bias. If you really want to be well-informed, the best chance you have is typing "effect of porn on ED" into google scholar. Don't read anecdotes on forums...
Nice citations to published studies
Casual Earth DINGDINGDING! exactly my thoughts 😂
Your brain on porn is propaganda that falsely represents scientific research. Nofap, which relies on the same false representations, is a sad anti masterbation movement of men who are ashamed they jerk off and blame all of their life's failings on jerking off.
The research at issue found that people suffering from a condition called compulsive sexual behavior have a chemical reaction in their brains in response to porn that mimics addiction. Your Brain on Porn uses that research to say that porn is addictive for everyone, but that is not true. The research says that only about 4% of the population has sexual compulsive behavior, not everyone. If you don't have that disorder, the research does not effect you, and there is no evidence that porn is addictive beyond your regular sex drive.
Bobby Salvin thanks for the info.
Not to be too pedantic, but would you happen to have the titles of the studies in question? I'd like to have references on hand in the future
Total mom here. I yelled at her when she drank the water "NO! There's a battery in that!!"
It would be interesting to see a video on the effects of porn on those who act in it.
+Hannah Jervis Indeed. Based on the interviews I've read/seen with former adult actresses, the experiences differ extremely and, no surprise, those who seem to have gotten into it simply for the sex and not just some misguided emotional issues, money troubles, naivity or being forced into it seem to have come out of it alright.
+Demian Haki it is interesting how extreme the range is isn't it!
Some can handle it, some cant. Same with retail sales, sports, even working in a fast food restaurant.
@@demianhaki7598 That's my experience as well, having followed quite some interviews.
Dr. Doe... you’re doing a good thing. Thank you.
I find the discrepancy between the percentage of people consuming porn and the number of those who find it acceptable quite saddening. Also, the last video on porn really changed how I view porn. I though that the negative effects were more severe than the positive ones, but I guess that comes from all the messages in more conserative media. I'm much more accepting of it now, and would maybe try to find ones made for women (and maybe even feminist).
but what about the culture that surrounds porn websites and the industry?? isnt the majority of porn violent towards women and promote fetishization of other ethnicities or cultures? isnt it a little concerning that the most searched porn category is 'teen'?
Loch Ness Monster Teen in porn basically just means like 18-23 or something. It is often said that all porn actresses are either teens or milfs, and milf is also a highly searched term. Anyway, it is probably less healthy to shame people for what they find hot than it is for people to explore their sexuality, even if knowing what they enjoy is offensive to some people.
I think as she said, the problematic part of the equation is the individual. If in their lives it's all done consensual then great.
'Teen porn' is not pedophilia but for the sake of argument let's say all those who watch are pedophiles. If they don't molest children and porn is a good copying mechanism for them, again, then great for them.
+Loch Ness Monster Why is it concerning? young people are beautiful and they look like what we like. Nobody is fucking children or minors, they are men and women over 18 who expressed a SIGNED consent.
You shouldn't care about what others do in their sex life as long as it is legal and with full consent of both parties.
Porn is my escape from the trouble in this old world. Stories of war and starvation and shootings fill the nightly newscasts. Weary of it all, I watch two people enjoying each other's company. Watching porn is witnessing the primal energy and beauty of the human form. Each performer expresses his or her sexuality and personality and each exhibits their own unique way of expressing themselves. They're nothing boring about it to me. Sex is a celebration of life. Make love, not war.
Just damn good stuff, thanks for all you do! I think I love you...
It feels wrong to discuss this without taking into consideration that the porn industry is often abusive and harmful to performers. If you do a second episode on the topic, is that something you might discuss? I feel like a lot of people aren't aware, and that's a problem.
Porn is as abusive as any industry. Seen how the fashion world treats its models?
Doctor Doe is always Awesome. Thanks :)
I am curious about one thing, when are the Stay Curious shirts being shipped this month? I am excited to get mine! :D
***** They're scheduled to go out this week ;o)
Very cool! Another useful video I'll add to my arsenal of things to share when people think there's only one side.
I can't believe you drank that shit!!! I was freaked out, yet amused.
Saying that porn is a form of sex ed is frighteningly accurate. Wish schools could teach more stuff more accurately.
Dr. Doe, you are my everything.
Hey Lindsey, this was such an interesting video, but I noticed you highlighted a lot of benefits of pornography. I'm curious: are there negative consequences of engaging in porn? What kind of effect does it have on the brain, good or bad? I'm really curious to know--may I suggest a follow-up vid to address the other side of the issue.
Best wishes!
Interestingly I realized recently that for me, the consumption of porn was actually a stimming effect from various undiagnosed conditions. It gave me a calming influence. Now that I, in my later life, know what I'm dealing with, I'm not as compulsive about it anymore. I still don't see any harm in it, and it hasn't in any way negatively affected me. I'm just more aware now of why.
So we’re gonna gloss over when she said millions discover it by 11?
You are honest and informative.
so...you took a sip from that water while the battery was still in there...ballsy
How many times per period of time (day, week, month) is it healthy to masturbate at different ages? And how big a part metabolism and our circadian rhythm play in the buildup of arousal, if any?
Inorganic Vegan I wonder... If you're having sex with a partner, and you're chafing, and he/she's chafing, but you both still want to go on, should you? If you say yes, I'd say you should go on even if its masturbation, and not sex.
Probably shouldn't drink from a glass with a battery in it.
40mIKe04 It was a metaphor... ;o)
sexplanations Is that you, Augustus Waters?
The whole time I thought, would you pretend to drink the water?
Your a lot of fun!
Hi, honest question, is there a benefit on "no fap challenge"??? I think the benefits vary between each person
My ex-wife had a big problem with porn, but she also had a big problem with anything but very vanilla sex and did not like discussing sex either. After our divorce, we reunited five years later and her attitudes about both porn and sex in general had totally flipped. Now she was very comfortable with sex and even liked watching porn from time to time. This confirms what I have seen in other women, but men as well: Those who have the biggest problem with porn are those who are the most sexually inhibited. It's not that way for everyone, but sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one.
"Masturbation is cheap, clean, convenient, and free of any possibility of wrongdoing - and you don't have to go home in the cold. But it's lonely." - Robert Heinlein
You’re the greatest Lindsay
is this on the affect of all porn, or is there a difference when it comes to hentai (animated porn) because unlike "real" porn you can you can distinguish fantasy from the norm. also you can see alot of stuff that you cant otherwise do ie limits of reality
Dr. Doe what do you think about movements like FightTheNewDrug or NoFap?
The primary issue with porn is over consumption. Like any addiction, its a form of escapism, and the constant easily accessible over-stimulation causes dopamine up-regulation, desensitizing one to stimuli and people within other areas of life.
2:09-2:17 YYAASSSSS!!!!! When my gf and I realized we both watch porn regularly, and were both hiding it, and we both watch the same types, it opened a humongous world of sexual exploration and fantasies and turned our entire sex life around. It's totally amazing to share our fantasies together and then let each other live out those fantasies WITH each other, while watching the porn. I recommend it to everyone who hasn't filled their mind with the preconceived notion that porn=evil, damaging, horrible, bad, etc..
While on this note, I've found in my own research, most porn stars absolutely love their jobs. It's not some evil conglomerate of imprisoned women, abused, and addicted to drugs... so get over the guilt trip!
Quick question - but were the studies looking at all forms of porn, or heterosexual porn only?
I've been watching this channel for so long and every time you upload a video I love you guys more and more. Does anyone know if there is a way to ask Dr. Doe a question?
Great information Dr. Doe
Kind of sad you didn't throw in the fact that porn is generally a performance and that often does not reflect reality in much the same way as hollywood.
Either way, love the video, keep it up Dr.
Curious, with the internet wide open and most boys now watching porn at young ages
does this have any harmful effects to creating maturation or a speed up on growth faster than nature intended?
In other words, would a young person get a boost of hormones that might change changes in development early?
Could there be any positive effects such as lowering stress in teens?
A former porn star said that porn kills love. He used to think about women as objects. If you're a guy who watches porn you are more likely to stare at a woman's body parts instead of her eyes.
This is a real shocker, women enjoy 'Porn' just as much as men. The ones I've met act "Holler than thou".
And now I have the perffect analoge for whenever/ if I ever have my own kid and have to give them the talk.
Thank you. :)
I think what you are doing is amazing!!! Please keep it up!!!
Thank you ms lady great information,I subscribed.
I want the reference list?! It's been two years since this has been posted?
This is my favorite woman on this channel, she is too cute
what is the demographic of the mentioned statistics. in this i mean is it; all, or just a sample size. or have I been missing the wrong census takers all my life?
I read a pretty amazing article the other day about this, which is where I'm assuming you got your numbers from. I'd say this was probably a good way of explaining it too. :)
Dr.Doe, one of my seriouse girl friends is a professional porn star and I tend to get really jelouse. Am i justified or am I just being over protective?
