Bad fish tank: existing
Chris: EMOTIONAL DAMAGE
small note - don't boil or bake rocks! They may contain water inside, which will expand when heating. Of course, gas expanding inside of a rock can cause an explosion!
I've always boiled my rocks & wood not baked them though- interesting comment though
River rocks specifically. You won't have this issue with something like dragon stone for example
@@someguy3167 kinda wanna boil some river rocks now ngl
Best way that I know of to clean them is a good scrub and a 30 minute soak in a 5:1 water and hydrogen peroxide (respectively) solution. Then let them dry for 24 hours and they should be good!!
I've boiled my rocks everytime when I clean my aquarium but thank to that now I know it explode
So I'll try to boil one and see how it explode
(Bc I'm curious)
I miss these old vids. Repashy!! Tell Chris to bring back these zen thoughts on fishkeeping vids!
My favorite thing in the aquarium hobby is, depending on who you ask, you'll always get a different answer. Clean your glass, don't clean your glass. Snails are great! Snails are Satan incarnate. You don't need co2 for live plants, co2 is absolutely necessary.
But what we can all agree on, SpongeBob doesn't belong in our aquascaping.
Unless you are wanting to introduce a young child to fish keeping hobby, and they're huge spongebob fans.
@@michellebarnhill5130 orrrrrr, and hear me out on this... We could leave SpongeBob out. And I say this as I have a scuba Steve bubbling away, in my all natural tank lmao
@@Pennysfishkeeping LOLZ, I just want to encourage little ones to be responsible fish loving aquarium keepers. It's so awesome that the hobby is so easy to learn about now. I have tried to keep fish and invertebrates since I was young. I wish all children had the opportunity. If it takes a Nickelodeon cartoon to encourage that lifelong love, so be it.
I have a blue semi coiled dragon at the entrance of a cave. But the planting is so heavy (now that it has all grown) it's very difficult to see. Very occasionally someone will spot it. The rest of my 4ft long is naturally decorated. As too are my other tanks. But I wouldn't want to not have it in there. Originally got it to encourage the offspring over 20yrs ago. 🤣
Tbh the way I see it is, artificial decor can be ok if it only takes up a small amount of your fish's swimming space. CO2 though... The answer really depends because there are some high tech, mainly carpeting plants, that do require CO2 to thrive but there's also plenty of low tech plants if that is your aim. It's kinda just, pick whatever you're comfortable with and build a tank around that. "Pest" snails though... Again, depends on who you ask and their tank keeping style, I'm one of some people that actually purposely keep pest snails as biological indicators since the health of their shell is a great way to check nutrient levels in a tank and their population density is a great way to check how much you're feeding your tank, since many freshwater snails are very slow compared to your fish and will starve if you only feed the perfect amount to fill your wanted bellies and not unwanted bellies. Hearing all the different answers is fun though, like I'm partial to low tech, low flow, no water change tanks and do well with multiple species of both plant and animal, then others swear by giant expensive canister filters for just about any sized tank and hey, there's a ton of factors that go into keeping a successful tank, starting with the owner's knowledge level, so I say do what works for you but don't be afraid to experiment a bit and listen to others' experience, and share what works for you as well, we're all constantly learning in this hobby and that's what makes it so fun and rewarding
Chris aggressively miming everything has me cackling 😂
Your voice is so relaxing that I was fading I almost fell asleep.
I subscribed ❗❗❗
Thanks for subbing!
I've always kept tanks by mimicing my father, who kept them his whole life, so I sorta skipped the beginner phase and jumped right into fancy tanks that he helped me set up. Now, I am looking at a new tank as a calming desk top view, and learning the basics for the first time may change how I scape this tank.
Thank you! The substrate IS an important choise! So many self proclaimed experts say otherwise!
I finally got the OK from my landlady to keep baby shrimp! Im researching for plants and tanks right now, so the tank will be ready for my new babies in about 6 months :p
Your channel is the gateway drug to fish keeping and good husbandry! :)
damn what a depressing world having to get permission to keep a small tank of shrimp in a place you pay to live in.....
This channel is really great for tips but I also recommend mdfishtanks he has a couple of videos on shrimp tanks also girltalks fish:) if you are interested obviously good luck
@@knabdank someday ppl can't even have kids without the landlord's permission lmao
Thanks for the tips! I was having trouble growing my plants, and I’m going to try some of them!
np and good luck!
My fish tank has pea-sized gravel. Can I grow plants? The gravel also helps to filter the waste in the fish tank. As you mentioned, you need substrate to grow plants. Can I place the substrate beneath the gravel?i@@FishForThought
Thanks for compiling these tank hacks bro. The basics are def relevant :)
np!
Oh god , I missed watching this regularly, life is starting to hit , getting too busy to watch anything regularly. But hey , looks like you're still thriving with your channel , huge props Chris!
I really like neon tetras. Bright blue with a pop of red. I have 16 or 18 of them in a planted 75 gallon with habrosus cories, harlequin rasboras, cherry shrimp, a hillstream loach, 3 otos and khuli loaches. In my opinion the tetras are the prettiest fish in that tank. And because they are so cheap you can get a lot of them and they are even prettier swimming together among the plants. I hardly see the rasboras as they stay at the top which means bending over to see them. The tank is in an inconvenient spot for pulling up a chair lol.
That tank sounds amazing
Your smile is contagious. love the videos 🥰🙂👍👍
So, whoops… I have my Betta in a 10 gal with Serpe Tetras. I didn’t know how agressive they were. They tend to get along well. There’s also a Narite and an algae eater. The tank is planted with mature Java ferns that I’ve had for a while. Nice video.
Working this morning and it's so refreshing to do so with Chris's voice in the background haha
You can also keep your church shoes clean by staying at home. Worked for me.
No matter where I go on YT I can't avoid hearing the hate on Jamy OliveOil 🤣🤣🤣 THANKS UNCLE RODGER
Great advices. I used one species for several years with the correct plants and clean up crew (I have to say one of my friends is a marine biologist so I had a bit of advice to get the right combination.)Then I started to add a few other species to it which were compatible. For the second tank I did a lot of research and combined several different compatible species with my Betta. And yes I put him in a larger tank with a lot of plants and compatible schooling fish and a clean up crew and he seems a lot happier in there than in the smaller tank.He loves exploring. The filter flow can easily be adjusted in a larger tank or in my case I bought large sponge filters.
After seeing how much my betta uses his 10gallon i will never go back ❤ he loves to explore !!
Love all your vids I've seen almost all of them
Omg super helpful!!!!!!!! I might do the green scape with the red crew😍
Always loved your videos even tho I've never had a fish tank
But I just found a 3 gallon in my neighbor trash so I'm preparing to join the shrimp gang
wish me luck
One of us
One of us...
Seriously, welcome and have fun!
Good luck! Also, a tip from someone who's made this mistake: expect to wait a month before getting any shrimp, they actually want you to give the tank time for algae to set in and the system to settle before adding them since shrimp can be pretty sensitive to changes and will graze constantly on algae if allowed, which means less risk of starvation if you can't feed them 2-4 times a day and can only do 1-2 times. Also definitely make sure you pick a species and test your water parameters to match that species, it should make acclimation easier. I hope that tank does great, shrimp are adorable and you can even add in a few small snails after a bit to add some variety ^^
I used paper towels to remove biofilm from my betta tank. Never had a recurrence. Probably because of the bladder snail invasion. My betta is definitely eating the baby snails and eggs thereby keeping them in check.
Now if I can keep up with removing the excess salvinia. Once a week, I use a fork to pull out as much as I can. It always grows back. Have to regularly chop off whole chunks of hornwort, too.
I have these lights too and, they're great!
Man just leaked out secret to aquascape that most aquarium shop hated. Another tips for the substrate, use a fine net to wrap the soil. Then use sand to cover the top. Root tab also necessary for long term longevity
I got my first Cory’s woooo! Also it’s weird being so early
Which variety?
@@michellebarnhill5130 albino
I made an aquaponics/planted tank. filled mesh bags with potting soil for the base then mixed blasting sand with a little fluval stratum as a cap. Veggies are coming in strong and the plants are growing wild but still don't have a carpet yet since I used monte carlo (taking a while to fill out)
so your vegetables are working as a phyto-filter? You have two tanks, and one of them is above the bigger tank, and the smaller tank is fed with the stream of detritus water from the big tank?
Loved this video full of tips and tricks! Thanks!!
Longer videos with lots of useful information and suggestions 🙀. Great job and a vast improvement to much of the previous content.
Chris is word...but chirs is an emotion..
You had me at church shoes!
So funny
Then I could hear your wisdom shared , also amazing and funny

I have my 10gal planted tank not super planted but have a diverse group of fish and it’s fun seeing them swim together with all the color and then see them kinda go off and do their own things. First planted tank and gotta say i am addicted can wait to do another one
Did not expect video to be so funny. 👍
This is the channel I've been looking for. Haha
I don't know how to say this but your videos over the others, which I watched hundreds of hours on even acoop has enlightened me. 2023 I am knowledgeable. My entire goal now is to see people with live plants, "I sell plants and FW fish" Because I know first hand it makes your professional overstocked tank, even if a jungle amazing! AMAZONING edit 8:43
Dirted tanks are where it's at, learn balance, ride the wave of only having to feed a tank and top off with RODI water twice a week, you can just keep a bucket of water setting with a couple well season plants floating in it, ready for top offs at all times. Don't adjust parameters until 3+ hours after you top off, I always wait to do my tests the following day. Adjust if necessary and only with the water at or above the full line, on mine I consider anything being obscured by the black rim as full. My care schedule means I only spend 5-15 minutes per day working on fish depending on the day of the week, and I get to spend 10 times that just looking at and enjoying them. The profit margin on effort:enjoyment is very very wide with a well-planned dirted tank.
I end up uprooting my plants too much. Started keeping them in small pots filled with Fluval stratum, with gravel on top. Super easy to move if I need to hunt for a dead snail, move to quarantine, etc.
I am so excited to watch already! Thank you ❤
ty!
Very good clip! Funny, full of info and what more is required? 10/10 Subscribed.
Thanks for the tips! I'm getting a fish tomorrow and I need to tell my family about this. We've owned fish that we found in a pond before but they all died of different reasons that could've been things like: Jumping out of the water, wrong food, fed too much, poor water conditions, fed too less etc... Maybe it was because my grandpa kept on trying to feed them bread and rice 😭
@@Steves_fish It's really depressing 😬Thankfully, my grandparents are now in another country.
Omft is back
I am with you 100%
People having problems growing plants.. Mine need to calm the hell down on the growing.XD So glad I took a pic before things grew out so I have a before and after. Shrimp are crazy happy though.
Nice, I was the 1,000th like
I like the Bible references 😊 I’ll keep watching just for that. 👍
After like 3 yrs off and on I finally am having success with plant growth. Idk if this is for all but for me I was using purigen in my canisters all those yrs. This past month I did a filter clean, and did not put the purigen back. Along with staying consistent on lighting, adequate ferts, and removing the purigen I've finally seen new growth on every plant I have. I'm especially excited about my s repens which I never had luck. Good vid and tips, always enjoy ya vids my g
yeah first thing i do is throw away any carbon inserts like purigen from my filter haha
My goldfish like to eat the biofilm, and I don't want to ruin their fun 🫤
It's all cute until there swim bladder have them 💀
@@jayparker96 ....what?
@@MrManiac2591 when goldfish eat from the surface, they usually end up with swim bladder issues.
If they get swim bladder problems you can feed them deshelled peas
@jahniparker they poop the air out fine. I stick with the hardier types of goldfish so there's less chance of it being an issue
9:49 Gary the Snail 😪
Reminds me of instruction when you get on a plane in case if the plane crashes
This is just what I was looking for. Thank you 😁
Uh, I experimented while building up my 55 gallon, so it was just empty but with filters and lights, and my pothos pots
It only had one fish which was a Betta, it was mostly confused but it did enjoyed moving around the pot, this Betta is now in a 10 gallon with a clown pleco as it's friend
Should I get some white clouds for my 9 gallon Fluval flex to accompany my betta?
I wont add any other fish which swim at thr top or middle of the tank with my betta in a 9 gallon. You can add bottom dwellers like kuhuli loaches or Cory fish. Adding amano shrimp and snails is a must tho.
And I also do dirt thank toppoed with nutrient substrate! Always works!
In The next video do a category for Cory cats And pleco (bristlenose, common) whatever..
A LOT OF PEOPLE DO MISTAKES WITH THESE FISH.
So maybe by doing a 1min video about this, u will save some catfish life.
Like tank size, enviorment etc
Your voice is so relaxing 😔👌
Yeah my nicrew is dope
yesss
nice vid, tto get rid of the biofilm on the surface i use one sheet of the newspaper, lay it on the water surface and drag it towards you lifting it this way you will remove all from the surface in one go. It is a 2 minute job done and all is clean on the surface.
Hi Chris
Can you provide theme ideas for a couple of 40 gallon breeder tanks...a la Walstad? I am big on Corys as a springboard to your thoughts and creative genius!
Nice furret
this is a really awesome video thank you
What temperature should I keep my tank? Guppies, Mollies, and a dojo loach w/ Java ferns, Java moss, and anubias
Chris . . . Why are you in my kitchen!?!?! Why does your kitchen look exactly like my kitchen lol
Found you recently, I have been binging your videos. just working on planting my dirted tank so I can add some shrimp and maybe an angel fish in the spring. may add three guppies as well.
That’s SpongeBob house comment made me feel attacked 😅
hi chris
I love your editing XD
ty!
sucking away the biofilm as a "life-changing event" :D hahaha... that is funny. - well, i guess if you don't have to do it every single day. had a tank once that had a problem with this and i remember it more as rather annoying. :)
My water lettuce are blocking light and there is cabomba, rotala, dwarf grass underwater. Do they need intense lighting cuz my floating plants are blocking light
Notes taken this vid came in clutch as I’m setting up a 30 gallon as we speak!
Also does anyone know why my lyretail Molly is sitting by the heater so much? Like I’ve checked the temp so much but I just can’t figure it out.
A pet store employee once told me that the rule of thumb is one gallon per inch of fish
I have a question
I saved a betta who has a bent back and can't really swim.
What size tank would you suggest for her?
She is my first betta and i want to give her the best life
Chris not even water cress / duck weed will survive in my tank. Java fern melts, anubias survives, everything else dies:( all the fish seem happy and don’t die tho
Hello Chris I just want to say that your videos are amazing keep up the good work (:
tyty!!
Boil everything except rocks because if heated up they have a chance of exploding
I was wondering about that. I remember camping and how certain stones couldn't be used around the campfire. I was a kid so I didn't understand why until someone told me about exploding rocks and from then on I was terrified to be around the campfire.
@@girrl88 yeah it's not certain rocks lol it's all rocks it's just some have less tolerance to it but your fine around a fire unless it's basically on the fire because u gotta think rocks are in fires in the bush and don't explode when u boil them tho your putting them directly in water that can hit hundreds of degrees real quick and usually for long periods of times
@@thenamesfrog85 Thank you for explaining that! Next time I go camping I won't be stressed about it so I'll have more fun.
Ive got a question... if i was to use a nutrient rich substrate would i have to change the substrate eventually? How long would it last roughly?
please don't boil rocks, they can literally explode ._. also some aren't aquarium safe, so best to figure out what kind of rocks they are before putting them in your aquarium. everything else in this video is *chef's kiss*
Depending where you find the rock ie the river. DO NOT BOIL IT!! They have a risk of exploding. You could be seriously injured!
hey man is it possible to do a set up without changing the water
12:23 what is that snail I have a random one I got from someone giving me plants? Is that a red ram horn?
can I use calcium clay substrate for a planted aquarium
Every Thursday huh 😏
how to clean up or prevent that little rim around your aquarium where the waterlevel is at?
Hi
Chris how do you keep the water cleaner then your..
WELL OKAY THEN
Heyoooo
I want to keep Cardinal tetra in my newly build 10 gallon tank.....which other nano fish I can keep ?
Wow thxsc
The issue I see with using dirt substrate under the gravel.. how am I supposed to vacuum out the detritus off the top without causing muddy. mess in my tank?? 🙄
Prime time Aquatics uses 1 root tab to start out with, and the fish waste does the rest afterwards.
You won't get mud if your gravel or sand cap is thick enough
Sand/Gravel cap must be at least 1.5 inches, preferrably 2.
Mine currently is at 1.5 to 2.5 from front to back
Unless your cap is 3in or more, which very few people do, don't dig into your substrate to vacuum it if you're using dirt or you can completely ruin your substrate. Instead, just skim the top and try not to disturb it too much or go for a heavily planted, low stocking tank and just forget the gravel vac altogether. Tbf aquasoil is ridiculously expensive for most people with a low budget so I've used organic soil in idk... Five or six tanks so far? I'm three or four max on actual aquasoil use and the only tank that's given me trouble with keeping the substrate clean is one I didn't fill carefully and air bubbles under the substrate made a mess, so instead of fixing it... I invested in a trio of young bristlenose plecos for that 90gal ^^'. It's my biggest tank and the substrate I went with has a lotta wood fiber so I'm hoping I can just use that for any wood eating species and have them leave any woodscape I might add alone for a bit longer
What kind of light did you say that you use?😄
Just a question, newbie in this hobby and is currently aquascaping my new 130ltr tank, I've noticed my house mates tank and has some sort of brown stringy like hair but shorter algae on the plants and some around the glass, do the shrimps eat them as well?
what was the floater at 728 in the video
How would you stock a 55 gallon tank?
Regarding lighting timeframe.. I don't know where you got the idea there is 16 hours in a day? For you said keep aquarium lights on 8 hrs and off 8 hrs. What about the other 8 hrs. We have 24 hrs in our days.. im just teasing you Chris, but you should correct that.
when did I say off 8 hours? can you give me the time stamp I tried to find it but couldn't
Which salvinia species do you recommend?
What fish tanks do you have
What’s the Amazon light you referred. A link would have been helpful. Thanks
It's a nicrew light
What is the carpet plant at 1:35?
Yo Chirs I got 3 neon tetras and one keeps on hiding it’s been over one month and it keeps hiding I have 3 mollys in the tank but they do not bully them, can someone help me
It may be that you have 2 males and one female so she is hiding from them so they won't harass her.
It’s probably feeling stressed from being in such a small group of neons.
Ok thank you guys
What is the song in the background?????
Plants dont grow fast enough for me... Was gonna invest in a heavy duty steel shelf unit and have a stack of 20 gallon tanks on it
@fishthought wut?
