EPISODE 250!!!!! We've come a long way since the very first episode y'all. Go check it out if you're curious. I came back from a long hiatus after hitting 10k subs at the time, I was so burnt out and knew I needed to do something new. I remembered I used to watch Meme Review by Pewdiepie all the time when I was younger, so I wanted to combine the 2 things. Episode 1 didn't get much traction, but I decided to do a clutch 2nd episode which took off and exploded. Now we're 250 episodes in. Thank you Cory Gang!

Turf idea is interesting but I would be nervous because A) if it isn't designed for aquariums it might leech chemicals into the water and B) loose bits of turf could be ingested by the fish.

My crazy fish tank idea is to have several tanks around my house connected with a series of transparent pipes from one to the next so my fish can see the entire house and I can have the same fish in multiple scapes. I think it would be cool to have the tanks at different heights so some can be full aquariums while others can be paludariums, all this needs me to have my own house and lots of disposable income so it isn't likely to happen soon.

    QOTW:
I took a bunch of black lava pebbles, smoothed them out in a ball mill with sand until they were soft to the touch, glued them together with black glue (I used glue from jbl so it's tank safe), and made a sculpture out of it that resembles some kind of petrified lava tree/castle ruin with large holes in the trunk, branches, and a crown. because of the irregular shapes of the pebbles, there are many tiny holes and crevices in it.
so i planted the hole thing with loads of anubias plants of different kind from very tiny to medium to large. it turned out to kind of resemble the tree from the first avatar movie.
Being made from lava rock and with all the anubias, it acts as a giant filter for the water column, which is great. crystal clear water with no algea, ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate levels since the setup 2 years ago. the plants even cover the parts where the glue would otherwise be visible.
was a very fun project and I would definitely recommend it.

@@dragonwithamonocle Certainly! And your only boundary is your imagination. Fortunately you can get a 55lb bag of lava rock for dirt cheap. I’d recommend walnut size pebbles and smaller, depending on the size of your tank, for more detail in the sculpture. You can do many different designs, and even mess up a few when you try it out first. It’ll be a looker for sure 👍

I'd recommend to be very wary of chucking random crystals in your tanks to anyone that wants to replicate it since they might release heavy metals that might poison your fish and shrimps. Definitely something I'd research before attempting. They obviously did and used clear quartz and an amethyst which are generally harmless.

QOTD: Clams and Mussels to help filter out any stuff floating in the water column. The only problem with it is that they eventually poop it back out again, adding more nitrate to the water. Great for floating plants though. For my Mississippi River tank (which I didn't put anything alive in) it would have to be the broken pipe which belches out polluted water ever now and then so that the filthiness doesn't all sink to the bottom. It's more or less a protest tank which has a lid solidly attached to it so that the horrible stench doesn't escape. If it ever breaks I'm in a world of hurt. The rusty old gun I put in there as part of the scape has rusted even further, and is hardly recognizable anymore. The old tire is getting silted in nicely, as are the assorted bottles, cans, sunglasses, and old cell phone. The old cell phone is leaking something. I took the battery out so God knows what it is. The slick of motor oil on the surface is still holding it's integrity, though a few balls have congealed and sunk to the bottom where they have covered a small patch with a tar like look. There is a good bloom of cyanobacteria and who knows else starting to grow around the water line. That's what I can see around the edges of the aquarium. the water has such a heavy silt load that you can't see more than an inch or two into it. There are two impellers which are located far enough in that you can't see them through the silt. They run and stir up the muck and silt 24/7. There are no filters or air pumps on the tank because I don't want to filter out anything. It's supposed to look terrible, and it's meant to be anoxic as well as toxic. I'm sure that when I get rid of it, the EPA is going to declare it a Super Fund site. I haven't put anything radioactive in it, and I won't because it's not led lined and I don't want anyone (including me) to get cancer from the monster. It also has a tangle of fishing line and rusty hooks which I collected from a local reservoir while they had it drained. It's also where I got the mud and silt for the aquarium. It was already pretty horrific smelling when I dug it out, and it probably already had some sort of horrific evil in it when I collected it.
The tank is meant to be a protest against water pollution, and therefore it is the first thing you see when you come into my abode, along with the sign above it which reads, "End Water Pollution Now!" It might be the sign which is my favourite hack for this tank. I'm hopeful that it gets the point across.
I have thought about going out to one of the reservoirs either in the spring or late summer to collect one of the many dead fish to put in there. The ones which float to the surface are coming there due to the bloom of cyanobacteria which grows in thick mats because farmers in the area are pouring way too much fertilizer onto their fields, and it runs right into the lake, causing it to become anoxic. A lot of fish get caught in the ice in the winter time, and as the ice thaws in the spring, they come floating in. The problem with those is that there are entire air forces of eagles, both bald and golden feeding on them and squabbling over each one. I have to ask myself, "Do I really want to fight grumpy hungry eagles over a fish? Comment below, and let me know if you think this is a good idea for the tank or not, and if you think it is a good idea, should I go during the summer and struggle against the stinking green slime, or whether I should risk a run-in with eagles and their sharp talons in the early spring.

My vote is battling the nasty green slime i wouldnt want to take food out of the eagles' "pantry"

QOTW: not much of a hack perhaps, but a really B I G rubber stock tank (for farms/horses) of about 100 gallons, with a bag of river rock on the bottom, some elodea canadensis, American lotus, and fathead minnows makes a neat outdoor pond (unless you've got a big basement). I threw in a few cheap goldfish (in case herons or mink come to visit the snack bar, I don't mind them eating a 20 cent goldfish). A small pond filter, and a small stock tank heater/de-icer for winter. It runs itself; the plants balance things. You can dig it into the ground or leave it sit above ground like a raised bed garden.

QOTW: This was for my pond: I got a large pot that I previously used to hold water lilies before, put it on its side, weighed it down with a few river rocks, and piled a lot *more* river rocks on top of it, making an almost-natural looking fish cave. I also wedged a few java ferns and water wisteria between the rocks on the sides and the top.
The fish love it! They swim in and out of it often.

    QotW:
Can't think of any good hacks as I'm busy feeding dogs and fish... and cats I guess😮‍💨 but my best friends in the hobby for maintenance are a magnetic silicone vase cleaner from Amazon or temu for jar, bowl and vase water gardens. It works just like the little magnetic glass cleaner gadgets but for containers that aren't straight walled. And turkey basters and toothbrushes, the humble turkey baster is the "gravel vac" for planted tanks when you need to get in crevices and corners to get out some debris or clean a sandy pathway. And toothbrushes of course for twirling algae, scrubbing assorted hardscape and getting in the corners and along silicone lines where scrapers don't reach. ✌️

Put aquasoil in plastic washingbags like the ones ladies use for lingeri. That way you can pour sand over it and the subtrates won't mix. All the style from a sand substrate, all the benefits of aquasoil.

6:05 Animals will use the space you give them, the more the better (to a certain extent, some animals might not like too much space. Like some snakes might stop eating due to feeling stressed because of the amount of space they have). Fish are no exception to that, they will explore and move around if you give them the option. Animals will utilize horizontal and vertical space, they might prefer one over the other but if they have more they'll use it. Just because there's a minimum of space they need doesn't mean there's a maximum of space they'll use (obviously in a tank/ enclosure, not in the wild)

    • @4nn4h

Snakes get stressed at "too much" space because they aren't given enough places to hide.

Discus tank is so beautiful and natural. We love planted tanks because of how “natural” they look, but that’s not how waterways look in nature. Instead we have something like that, plants growing out of the water with tree roots reaching into the water. Just, chefs kiss for that. Only thing missing is the tannins and leaf litter

7:13 Double Dragon Tank owners. Chris thanks for showing our tank and saying that you love it!!! No it is not one of those giant Bullfrogs. It is Lithobates pipiens formerly Rana pipiens (commonly known as the northern leopard frog). Frogs are about the size of a silver dollar fully grown. These frogs spend 95% of their time out of the water in the upside down rimless tank that is on the right side. To feed them we have to put crickets in water tight container submarine them from the left side of the tank to the right and release the crickets. FX6 is in the cabinet to the right, and remember there are two large sponge filters in the tank as well. We are keeping Aquarium Coop in buisness by using their water test strips very often. I love that it is Unrated = Unbelievable so we are going to self claim a 5 out of 5. 😂Bucket list checked. Keep up the great channel.

AOTW: My crazy fish tank hack is hanging breeding tanks on my shrimp/guppy grass aquarium
The breeding tank flows into the shrimp tank, and they clean whatever flows over
I feed the cory fry raised in the breeding tanks, and when I clean the tank, I use a turkey baster and release what I pick up into the shrimp tank.
Long story short, i think I have raised about 40 corydoras (proper sized juveniles go from the breed tank to a Cory aquarium) and now have about 300 red cherry shrimp
I also sold a full tank of Guppy Grass for $40 per batch to my local fishstore 3x.

Have 1 or 2 black ghost fish living in 150-200 gallon loooong tank and have something in the very center (like a stump or a very big stone) and make it in a way that the fishes can go move around in a circle. That way the fishes don’t have to move back and forth and move so much in reverse. (Just imagine you drive a car but you can only move back and forth because your planet has only one street and it’s straight between your house and the only grocery store and gas station. So a circle makes more sense and at least more pleasant)

Something I've been really wanting to do for a while is make a "patio pond" style aquarium, using a stock tub instead of a glass tank for fancy goldfish. Since glass tanks are so heavy, fragile, and expensive, using the stock tub instead would be a great way to provide ample room for fish that I've always wanted to keep but never had the tank size for. Patio ponds aren't too crazy, but this idea might be: I want to cut out a window or porthole in one or multiple sides of the tub and silicone in some glass, plexiglass, or acrylic. I have been toying with how limiting the viewing angles of an aquarium affects the perceived size, and smaller viewports really do make the tanks feel larger and more private. I have a six gallon tank that feels bigger than the ten gallon it's right next to because of some of this experimentation.

You really don't need to suck on the hose to start a siphon. You need a longer hose to start with. Once you get better at it, you can do it with a shorter hose. Just get a bit of water in, then lift it up so it drops down the hose. While it's dropping, quickly put the hose back in the tank. The water going down the hose will start the siphon for you. If you fail to start the siphon, So long as there's still water in the hose, you can coax it out and that will start the siphon. It's a bit difficult at first but once you get the idea, it's pretty convenient and intuitive.
If you have a gravel vacuum then it's much easier. Just bob it up and down the water and the siphon will start.

Watching FFT in Spain (on vacation) is a whole other experience knowing I can experience this greatness six hours early! QOTW: If you have a bamboo shrimp and a hang on the back filter watch out! My bamboo shrimp (affectionately named momo) would crawl UP the water flow and INTO THE FILTER! He was having the time of his life grazing off of the particles cause I only had a coarse filter sponge and some biomedia but I never saw him in the tank! So I guess the hack here is to opt for a sponge or canister filter with these guys. Peace ❤
Edit: I realized that I’m not actually seeing it earlier but I like to think of it that way haha 😂
Also congrats on 250 FTRs making it happen! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

QOTW: When I do something dumb like replace the sponge filters in my turtle tank canister and toss all that good bacteria, I sometimes set up a temporary bog filter using a bucket with an overflow drain pipe and a cheap $5 water pump to help carry the load for a while. Usually a bunch of pothos and whatever else I may have rooting at the moment. Maybe some water lettuce from the porch pond. With controlled lighting, you can even farm algae to do the same job in this way while keeping your main tank space largely clear of it. With a little work to conceal the bucket, it can even be made to not look completely stupid, lol!

Turf/ fake grass is sometimes used if you are breeding egg scattering fish. Take danios for example. They spread the eggs, eggs falls into turf. Fish can't reach them to eat them, then you remove the adults after they are done doing their thing. Doesn't look half bad either!

I have tried turf as deco, turned out bad. Afterwards i realized that its bad for gold and kois. I think it could be fine with small fishes, if you somehow stick turf to glass that the poop would not go underneath.

Run the biggest canister filter you can and just put a smaller impeller in it to reduce the flow. Saw it in a master class but haven't tried it yet.

  • @Diresilence
    @Diresilence 2 місяці тому

Turf could be viable, but keep in mind that it would be a pain to clean, as most substrate lets fish poop sort of filter in ande ventually semi 'sink' into the soil which then lets beneficial bacteria grow, as well as giving nutrients to plants. The turf would just hold it at the top layer. I'm pretty sure turf doesn't leach, since they have to make it so it can take a beating and isn't toxic when exposed to rainwater, but definately would have just used aquariam foam for the cave, or just standard dragon stone or the like for it.

I would do fake grass and you probably don’t like my aesthetic, but I like actually experimenting such as I used this blue sand mixed in with all natural decor for my Scud tank. I think it looks great. My emergency tank has of course neon fake plants in it and then I actually put some real Plants in there that are potted in fake rock pots that can be taken out when I need to medicate the tank. It’s a lot of fun when you start broadening your horizons.

    QUICK CYCLING A TANK
Put a single pellet of fish food in a cup with declorinated water. Heat it up and stir till it dissolves. Add Sechem pristine and stability Strain it through a coffee filter in your new tank and let it do its job for 24-48 hours. If you have a second ESTABLISHED TANK use ur sponge to clean the glass and then submerge and squeeze in the new tank. And then eat something and forget about the tank till no ammonia or nitRITE is in it. All you want it nitRATE (20-50ppm)

Assuming the turf is actually safe for fish tanks, I could see it being used for part of the bottom of a goldfish tank (turf on one end, sand on the other? or sand in the middle as a "path" with turf on either side) or other low-plant setup. Maybe stick some java ferns in there to lend some credibility to it hypothetically being actual turf Also QotW: I just let java ferns take over a block of driftwood to make it look like an even more massive bush than it already is lmao

Then and island of driftwood, real dirt/ sand substrate with as many live plants as I can cram in there. I’m thinking it will be much easier to maintain. Thoughts?
