LL Cool J: The Original Drake
Вставка

- Everything in the culture of hip-hop has a trailblazer that made it possible. From Kool Herc’s inadvertent creation of the genre as a whole and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five injecting social commentary amid the pulsing beats on “The Message” through to Schooly D paving the way for NWA to take gangsta rap global with his groundbreaking “PSK”, nothing within this genre is born without the seeds being planted before them.
In an industry where no one exists in a vacuum, the steps that most hip-hop artists take are a case of retracing that which came before them in one way or another. And while the internet has opened the floodgates for diverse, experimental voices to find audiences, the mainstream landscape is one which remains adherent to tried and tested templates, formulas and set roles that need to be fulfilled.
And ever since the man LL Cool J, lesser-known James Todd Smith left his mark on the game, one of those has been for a smooth-talking, million-selling ladies man who isn’t afraid to spit with the best of them when it’s required.

Who did it better tho?
Not even a question LL.
LL
I’m a 2001 baby so I grew up with Drake . So I’ma say Drake . I don’t know any of LL cool J music in that time I wasn’t born yet . No disrespect. Just saying. 🤷🏾♀️
Are you serious? Of course LL COOL J
@@sweetqueenladybug2028 I was born after you and I know ll cool j is better
Cannibus said "99% of your fans wear high heels" LL responded back with "99% of your fans don't exist". Savage
"u aint got the skills to eat a niggas ass like me" LL won after that line
Canibus still a better rapper. He def phucked up stepping to legend like LL, but bar for bar LL is beginner level--Canibus just bit off more than he could chew in terms of gatekeepers and fanbase--this was in what 200/1--we didn't have census of the internet, it was select few who decided things, that's why Eminem needed Dre just to get started, etc. Today soundcloud and famous overnight.
AND it's Canibus, like Can-I-Bus, even his name has bars; not a bad spelling of cannabis.
Listen to Canibus-Channel Zero
Yeah and canibus still destroyed him lol, ll cool j had a bunch of nursery insults in his response
*LL Cool J is a certified legend in the game. Most of these millennials will never understand how influential he is, considering the fact that he came in the hip-hop game at the age of 16. He was one of the first few rappers who superbly mastered being versatile from being hardcore to being a lover boy.*
Drake can do one of them
Not sure why you’re dumping on millennials when a fair amount of you grew up listening to him. I think your beef is with gen z who weren’t born until after his career became legendary
Millenials heard of him as well and may have listened to his music.A gen zer has either never heard his music or know who he is through parents who grew up listening to him.
@@msnewsenior I have heard of his music and I’m a gen Z. What are u talking about ?? My parents and grandparents had me growing up listening to old school music even till this day my grandpa is 75 and only still bumps old school like James brown, llcooj, Marvin Gaye, blues music etc
@@daedae556 ok? you're in the minority. i bet a majority of your friends wouldn't be able to name some of his songs or the name of any of his albums. point still stands...
This comparison is so obvious. There’s are an archetype… mainstream appeal, musical versatility, clean cut image, charismatic, ability to enter other art forms, being commercially viable, etc.
No way bro lol Drake is a different beast

I grew up hearing my elders say how dope LL Cool J was as a rapper, and my introduction to him was his "Phenomenon" album and I definitely became a fan shortly after that. His beef with Cannabis is one of those ones that was mostly petty, but brought on some truly great diss records and LL is definitely a legend in Hip-Hop with a doubt.
Did you actually listen to Canibus? BC if you did, you would easily see he had mad bars, but LL was pretty broke. Compare the times, we didn't have internet to decide who is better; only a few gatekeepers and payola DJs. Now you see how a inferior artist won.
Real ones know LL is a legend.
NO, if you were around back in his day, you'd know, he candy af. Outside of Momma Said Knock You Out, which he did not write, he was wgak. Another Deangelo, just selling male sex appeal. Nobody in rap thought he was good, but the hoes. He pulled mad hoes to shows, more than Al Green, which is saying alot.
He’s the original LL Cool J.

Huh?
Don't think Drake been rapping since 9, & making his own beats' & probably became a heartthrob after becoming a rapper..🤔
LL definitely deserves his props. He still is the blueprint for hip hop lyrically and one of the very first rappers that influenced his followers to hit the gym too.
LL is incomparable.
yeah the fact that he went right into acting and killed it is crazy... drake still acts like hes 21 tbh
LL is wack

Saw him live in London. A class act for sure.
I understand the comparison, but it's different in the way that no real emcees look up to Drake from the aspect of being a rapper. They just respect his ability to keep himself relevant. Some of the best emcees of all time looked up to LL as an emcee.
I’ve never heard anybody speak or complment drake for his ability to be relevant you sound dumb 😂😂😂😂😂
yeah idk one artist that wants to be drake beside the success of him. Style and everything is no way. Someone like King Von is a example of rapper everyone copies. Chief Keef... Love cool j. One of the best of his era alongside Rakim. He made Kangol and rope chains a status symbol. I still wear 'em today.
Unlike Drake, LL said things with his chest. And, when Cool J said: "Mama said knock you out," he actually meant that shit. Aubrey, though... Idk, but seems like there's many spots where he's lying.
He definitely meant that shit. His mama probably said that too😂
I mimic my Game after LL .. a street guy they ways a ladies man.. thank you 🙏🏽 LL cool J for everything you Did
That line by Canibus "ninety-nine percent of your fans wear high heels" I never saw as an insult. So many rappers wish they have more female fans and some maybe that type of male fans.
LL came back and said “99% of his fans don’t exist” which I think is one of the best comebacks of all time
@@slimshady1363 Yeah that is funny lol. I forgot about that one. LL that man only rapper/actor better than him is Will (Wahlberg don't count).

Idk chief. Check out Drake's time stamps. Also check out songs like Middle of the Ocean, Views, The Ride, Pound Cake, Diplomatic Immunity... This is coming from someone who is very critical of Drake, I also wrote a report on LL Cool J in 2006. It's just trendy to hate on Drake, especially from Older Hip Hop Heads.

That statement from Drake shows how far he's come. "I wanna go about rap in the most non-confrontational way possible" is wild in today's day with drizzy. He all about those mob ties and instigating beef with other rappers. Though I still feel like he's trying to paint this picture of a hardcore gangsta, surrounding himself with this beef energy when truly he is a smooth talker. See his beef with Kid Cudi, his beef with Ye. He always making sure his enemies are closer than ever. Maybe close enough to make some records or live performances with.
drake be having the corniest beef possible. esp his response to anthony fantano's lighthearted trolling. he responded with the corniest shit of all time.
@@noodlesushi111 I totally agree. Even if he was trying to be funny, it wasn’t. Just highlighted that even with that kinda money and his place in the game, he is insecure as fuck. And I like drizzy, but that’s just the reality. I wish he would stay true to himself, but eh.

This is why Im starting to hate hip hop UA-cam channels especially newer ones cuz they dic ride anything that's right now & disregard anything before it Drake is not the end all be all he's just really successful and able to make hit radio songs off of other peoples contributions there's literally nothing original about Drake he did not originate anything he was at the right place at the right time with the right people and they were able to mold him into what he is today in the process they had to screw over a lot of people have a lot of people work in the sweatshop and not get credit while also stealing more popular older songs and trying to pass it off as if it was his own AKA plagiarism AKA stealing copyrighted songs Drake is the most overhyped person in the world it's just because social media it's all about who's the most popular most followers etc which he's on top of all those numbers

LL Cool James can actually rap!
It’s true 🤷🏿♂️ he created Drake’s entire lane. He gets respect for it now, but if you listen to a lot of his rivals at the time, he was seen a soft-ass pretty boy. They didn’t back off until he started ending careers on wax. And I think after Meek, Drake thought he could do that too, but Push put a stop to all that.

Gimme LL over Drake any day thanks.
Phonte is the original Drake. But LL is definitely the biggest Hip-Hop mainstream influence overall.
Great analysis here 👍
Good video but point of correction:
As much as rap was very masculine in the 80s, when I Need Love dropped in 87, rappers weren't acting like pimps yet (that was only after 1988 when NWA and Too $hort blew up). Rappers were just acting hardcore when they rapped about how good they were. LL was a master of this as even Arsenio told him back then that fans said he was too hardcore.
LL also had many instances where he was accused of being a sellout, especially after his 1989 album Walking With A Panther, leading him to go back to his hardcore side on Mama Said Knock You Out.
Big daddy Kane was the original Mack before NWA
Title was a little indifferent. Should say this “LL the original lover boy.” Drake is more a descendent of LL than LL is of Drake. If that makes sense.
"Let's get ill"
I was ready to dismiss this video but you have made a compelling point. Thanks for this content

LL was his own bodyguard.... drake ain't tough like that.... been a fan of ll even before I knew he rapped.... honestly.... saw him in deep blue sea as a kid.... hes a straight icon ... a real man
LL is the Original LL. LL grabbed a lane that was not being occupied. He was the FIRST Hip Hop heart throb, and he brought the bravado braggadocios style with him. LL was labeled the King of Hip Hop by the media during his early years, but LL called himself the Prince. Later on in years, he called himself The G.O.A.T., a term that he created as an ACRONYM...yes LL CREATED that! He named his album G.O.A.T., it was released on 09/2000. That album hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. After that album hit the streets, everybody and their daddy started using the term GOAT....for everything!!!

I think because everyone doesn't want to let go of Ll the lyricist , we can't forget that he can finish some rappers in a battle But he can also speak to women he does both. Drake on the other hand started off with women but now is having an identity crisis lol

I have yet to hear anyone call LL corny tho....
LL was the first rapper to make records for the ladies AND to bang the club. Drake did the same, although none of his joints banged quite as hard as Mama Said Knock You Out. Sorry, gotta hand it to the OG.
Can't forget 4,3,2,1 with Meth, Redman AND I Shot Ya Remix ft. Foxy Brown, Fat Joe, Keith Murray, etc. 2 of some of the hardest songs out there, go listen 🙌🏽
MC's making slow joints was the thing in the 80's. Cowboy from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five murdered You Are in 82. Followed by Curtis Blow with Back In Love in 84. Whodini followed up with the super popular One Love in 86. The same time Statasonic and Fat boys put out Float on and Failing in Love. In 87 Shane dropped Left Me Lonely along side I need love. And a year after Slick Rick killed it with Teenage Love....few years later Dre and the World Class dropped Turn off the lights.
