Hi Norbi, If you are talking about refinements/adjustments to the instrument, then there is not much that can be done. A new cork might help slightly. If you are talking about high register in general, I have had a couple questions about high notes this week so I will be working on a video to address that. It is an ongoing process, but I am constantly looking to find the most efficient approach to sound production in the high reg. Stay tuned for more info and thanks for watching! Lance
As someone who hasn't played an instrument in over a decade, with no intentions of doing so really. I don't know how I came upon this video - but totally appreciate your fair and unbiased review on this cheap instrument. Lol.
I like that you think I sounded like an oboe! Godard Allegretto is a very standard piece and you can find the free sheet music here: imslp.org/wiki/Suite_de_trois_morceaux%2C_Op.116_(Godard%2C_Benjamin) I also highly recommend the other two movements of this suite. 🎶😍
I purchased a glory flute for my daughter when she first started playing the flute in fourth grade she’s now a junior in high school, and she’s been using the same glory flute. Today one of her bandmates dropped it and I have to replace it only because of the drop. It really was a great flute and all of her band teachers have always been shocked at the sound quality.
I played years ago, and thinking of getting one. Was in a high school band and used their instruments. A relative gave me one on loan, which I used for over a decade, but eventually wanted it back for another family member. I had the pads replaced and had an electric pickup Which I included when I returned it to the owner. This flute in your video would be occasional instrument to take out to play. My wife likes to sing, so this would be a way to include myself in that interest. Great review.
I was looking to pick up a new instrument at the beginning of quarantine and ended up picking one of these up and learned the basics on it. It worked pretty well honestly, though I upgraded after a few months and found it much easier to play in the upper register. For the price, if you have realistic expectations about what you're getting, I think these are pretty neat.
Yeah, I started playing on a Glory flute in 4th grade in the 2019-2020 year, when covid struck. And then i went back in 6th grade, so i played it for 2 years. I upgraded to a Yamaha student model flute, and i wasn’t really able to get to the upper register, which my yamaha does.
Love the toss of the gloves...also baffled by the inclusion. Screw driver is eyeglass a cheap substitute in a pinch though a beginner is the LAST person I'd hand a screw driver to...
Singularly one of the best review video of these category of flutes that I have viewed! Very well done! Subscribed! Also the white gloves are for those who will use this instrument in a marching band. They get free marching band white gloves.
Thanks for the review! I'm interested in picking up another instrument (clarinet is my primary, and I can play some songs on ukulele), but I don't have a ton of money to throw at this right now. This looks like the perfect thing for me. Also, I love the painting behind you!
That’s great! I hope the flute works out well for you and your needs. Thanks for watching and For noticing the painting. It is an old art school project of my brother’s.
Pretty nice work here Lance! I've been thinking about buying an Amazon/Temu/AlilExpress flute due to the low range price of this instruments. I use to play piano and guitar at home with my kids, so after watching this video I've decided to buy a flute. I'll upload videos of my learning process. Thanks a lot.
This is proof that mass production is the king of just about everything we buy and own. Now one can buy the best and most costly of anything, some things as with most things are over priced. I don't see with flutes how they need to be more than 1k for a good one. There is a jazz flute player in my area here in Detroit and she is amazing along with being a great sheet music reader of any style she said "I never pay more than $1700.00 for a flute even though I can afford to.
The problem with cheap instruments is that you need to be good at gambling... sometimes they will surprise but they will last for a short time like it happened to my first flute... it lasted some couple of months with constant adjustments until the flute died...
I got this exact flute on Amazon (the listing was $89.99, not $78.99, but still relatively cheap) as my first one, and it arrived Saturday afternoon. I'm just learning how to play, but I think the closest thing to that I actually know how to play is one of those plastic recorders. Thanks for the video!
Or just going to your pawn shop. Excellent review. I played the flute when I was a kid and want to try it out again after playing the guitar for several years. I now think I will get a used one to try out. If it doesn’t work for me, I’ll just donate it to my local middle school.
Thanks for the review...I'll buy myself one as a repair project with only $100 to loose I'll take it apart and try to learn how to work on flutes. Beside having fun I may save lots of $$$ on my expansive flutes.
I was just here to see how to clean the flute. I'm leaving here understanding how weird flute players are. Especially the whole glasses thing. Why take them off before speaking to the camera? Kind of like a real life NPC. But damn can he play.
i just realized my mom lied to me and said she bought me an expensive flute, only for it to be this exact lower than $100 one :( no wonder it sounds worst than my classmates

Hi, I'm.... Well, it's a long story, feel free to ignore if you wish: I played the flute for a year in elementary school and then swapped to trumped during middle and most of highschool, because kids love to be rude where I live I wish to play a instrument after some years of... Well let's face it, after I graduated highschool I mostly just hung my trumpet up in the closet, I thought my music days were done.... And because I haven't really wanted to push into college music, because my family didn't have the money to put me into a college for music, in a world or state that... Doesn't really care for musical talent aside from rap songs and music that wishes to instil combat and conflict over playing for the heart and soul, so I kinda just left my musical heart be a relic of the past... I graduated 2015, it's not 2023, and it's been truly a age (8 ish years) since I played any instrument to speak of, trumpet or otherwise... I gave up on the flute because people (kids my age years and years ago, this was 5th grade after all) wanted to bully, and loved the idea that 30 flute players and only 2 were boys... As much as I wish to play music, I don't think my trumpet is a good idea, not only for the need to maintain and possibly repair it (it has been stored literally after graduation, so it may need a lot of work) but also my home isn't thick walled to not be too loud. And my family may not wish to hear a trumpet blasting music, as I don't have a mute device... So I... It's hard to open up and take a risk nowadays... I wish to return to the flute because not only is it a more calmer music (the music I wish to practice may be calmer when I play, I intend to try to put a calmer emotion into it) but it's also possibly able to be played at any random time without being too loud to annoy my family... I'm 26 now and wish to have my hands on a instrument because I wish to play music at home and try to play a instrument once more, specifically the flute.... Sadly my research showed that internet is as detailed on what to get as... Well as school is trying to teach students how to handle the open world of life (I had to teach myself how to pay taxes and even then this is bare minimum, I'll need more know how on taxes) I don't know what exactly what I'm looking for in my first personal flute to call my own, idk what to look for specifically because in 5th grade there was only one flute type, one rented to the school, 30 flutes, one brand, now there's many many brands and many reviews.... The internet said to mostly avoid some of the cheaper brands like glory and 2 or 3 others, based on longevity and sound (proper care can solve that and hearing you play it here helped me know it has a beautiful tone, for it's price surprisingly) but to go to more trusted brands, one of which is Yamaha brands... But sadly I do not wish to rent one I wish to own a flute, and sadly I'm not at a financial stable point to put over 1 thousand dollars into a flute I may not play (I intend to try but I wish to try without such a high risk, since I paid over 400 dollars for a 3d printer and so far only printed 3 things on it.... So I'm worried my desire to play the flute may be as much a standstill as trying to figure out how to use a 3d printer when I never even studied how to work one, most just say plug the power upload a file and it does the work, no one mentioned the extra work hidden behind the printer, so now I think I'm too cautious to make my own personal choice anymore...) In your best opinion, which flute brand should I get, which cord style, I think overall I may wish for the closed holes over opened for familiarity but even that is a maybe there, as you recommend open hole for smoother tone and a more smooth play... Sadly unlike 5th grade me, I have too many choices and not enough knowledge, young me only had one flute to choose from, now there's like 20 brands, 10 cheaper/risky ones and 10 overly expensive/ possibly grander sound and tone, and too many variables... Sadly I can't pull a young me and let someone else make the choice, I must overall make my own choice.... But I wish for some possible ideas, because there's different cord flutes like f, g, and many other types, there's different brands, there's even different metals, between nickel, silver, and basically quarter metal (not the actual name but it's what glory had as you reviewed it) I only know of my 5th grade flute that I rented from school, which I think might had been a c... It was a closed flute for newer players but it might be a c type... Idk there's many now I researched them.... I'm sorry, it's very long, but I only plan to ask what flute in your opinion should I get? Flute type (b, c, f, g?) Which brand (glory, Yamaha, other?) And what style (open holed closed hole, metal material, and other possible information I may be missing) I know this is a massive read and I know you may not have the answer as I'm asking for a very big step, if you can't answer, then just a short I can't truly answer will suffice, thank you anyways wether you answer it or not, the time you took to read it I will appreciate as I know I took plenty of your time making this
Does anyone know how you can get instruments that don't use any animals products?? Often companies won't label their instruments as vegan (in fact, I've never seen that) and I wouldn't know which things to look for, like the fish-derived pads on a flute..
Hey Lance, that was a great review. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I just subscribed and I can't wait to see more of your videos. 😊 I've always enjoyed playing my beginners soprano recorder. I play for fun and relaxation. I'm seriously considering an upgrading. Would the Glory flute have the notes l need to play Ave Maria?
I love the glasses on and off haha. Thank you so much for this video. I played the flute almost 20 years ago and am thinking of picking it back up. My sister got me a wooden flute in nepal and I have fun playing it even though no real notes come out of it. I think it is for decoration :D. I am ordering the glory now to see if I really want to get back into it.
Thank you very much for this review, dear Lance! I was choosing some flute for my student and I did't knew this brend. And I love your sarcarsm! Warm regards
Good review. One guy on the internet said to people you have to pay a $500+ to buy your first flute. I totally disagree with him. Not only is it expensive esp. if you do not stick with it, its a waste of money. I never bought very expensive instruments and they have stood the test of time, i have piano, guitar, drums, trumpet and now the a flute. Of course at the start of musical learning i got a really cheap guitar, wrong size and just a bad guitar £30 any one. It looks good on the wall the though. I then got a C40 classical guitar for £85 over 11 years ago which is worth £124 now. The guitar was and is brilliant and i still have it. i did get an encore electric guitar set which is ok to start with. I eventally got an epiphone guitar which looks great, poor finish, damn neck heavy. What that means the guitar will drop down from the guitar head stock as your trying to play it. I had to varnish the guitar to keep the finish. The electronics were great though but not the tuners. I then got ibnez grgr221pa-aqb gio guitar. Damn thats a long name. This is the best guitar ever had even (though i did the like the fender squire cheap knock off in red). I have a yammaha accoustic which i bought off ebay and that is a fantastic guitar, plus a12 string guitar that guitar is great, lovely low action and nice sound. Also i have a gear4u piano which is fantastic for the price. The drums were cheap but with a good drum speaker it sounds great. All are basic instruments along with my student Bb trumpet. The problem with brass trumpets you have to keep oiling them or the valves get stuck or rub- and they dent easy ( did that to my trumpet grr). I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy my instruments and my kids get to use them if they wanted. Oh i have ukeleles too which my son loves.
I did purchase this one from Amazon. After the first 8 or 9 hours of practicing, not all at once lol, one of the little rods that holds the upper pads came loose and the rod was moving, which resulted in off seating of the pads and no sound. I need to pay $50 for diagnosis and then I don't know how much for repair. This would be almost the cost of the instrument. I really want to play as I volunteer my time. Should I invest $500 in a nicer instrument or pay to get this one repaired?
@@xhibisha I did purchase a nice one from a reputable music store. I just wanted folks to be aware of what they were buying from Amazon. It did however, last me for 3 years. I am very happy with my professional one. Thank you for your input. :)
Thank you for the great video. Buying a flute to reacquaint myself (from high school days gone bye) has been on my mind, so to find your channel is most helpful and you obviously know your stuff. Thank you for the great review and detailed information. I will watch your next video on the Mendini flute. In school I played a Yamaha - I loved it and I remember it having a rich warm and soulful sound and tone. I have to say that this one did not sound like that - although it was good - probably because of your skill which pushed it somewhat. I hope to find out what is the least I would need to spend in order to obtain a rich tone a lay person could still be proud of. ha.!
Trumpet/sax player 25 years picked up a flute for the first time today. I must say if I bought a new Sax 🎷 or Axe 🎺 and it came with a pair of what gloves I would look just as confused. Because why do they come with it😂😂😂😂
Lance Suzuki yes it really slippery and it makes me feel like I’m going to drop my flute. But my director used to let us cut the tops off so we wouldn’t drop it.
Thanx for the validation on my Glory flute purchase! I played for some small audiences ....they liked the sound! Plus I did practice diligently!Only one question...I can hit the high C. I can play low D flat ..but I can't seem to play low C....any suggestions? Any adjustments needed?
Hi Curt, It's hard to say without seeing the flute. However, my first guess would be that the Low C-C# connection might be off. Unfortunately, this is one of the connections without a screw adjustment. It is not easy to adjust without taking the footjoint apart, so definitely best left to a pro technician. Sometimes if you press on both the C# paddle and C roller (rather than just the roller) it can make this better. Good luck! Lance
Short answer...yes. Closed holes are generally easier to learn on for beginners as they figure out where the fingers go. However, open holes dramatically improve the sound of the flute. As a compromise, I ask my beginner students to purchase open hole flutes with plugs.
Our daughter decided she wanted to be in band for 6th grade. She's never played an instrument, and went for a fitting and evaluation and decided on the flute. We purchased this Glory flute before we decide to rent to own a more (much more!) expensive instrument. It should arrive tomorrow. Thank you SO much for this detailed review! It has been immensely helpful.
Cupronickel - this answers the question about the gloves - some people are allergic to Nickel. Even e-guitar/bass players might be forced to use either gloves or strings of stainless steel to avoid reactions.
@@LanceSuzuki theres also the part that students in something like a marching band typicaly don't want to use their nice horn (in this case a flute) so maybe a Glory flute might be a great marching flute. Marching bands typicaly wear gloves for marching, and are most common in white (explains the color). They are also wearing gloves to protect the outside of the instrument from all that sweat and dirt on their hands, which especially comes out when one is running around a football field or doing a parade in the hot sun. From all the videos of "cheap" instruments the outside of these instruments aren't very good at keeping their laquer or coating, so the gloves prevent it from fading as well. I just thought i would add onto what Thomas said. Great video too edit: i had some spelling errors

@@LanceSuzuki thanks yes i meant what are the different refinements from student intermediate and pro flutes, the actual mechanisms seems standard.
What color is it? 🙈 (your Flaute)
🤣 I got the nickel plated one (I think that was the cheapest).
As someone who hasn't played an instrument in over a decade, with no intentions of doing so really. I don't know how I came upon this video - but totally appreciate your fair and unbiased review on this cheap instrument. Lol.
Thanks a lot, Matthew! Glad you found the video!
the most important thing is no matter how cheap or expensive the flute is, as long as you are a pro you can play it very well lolll
13:48 - It sounds kind of like an oboe.
16:40 - I can see where Katie Flute got her intro music now.
I like that you think I sounded like an oboe! Godard Allegretto is a very standard piece and you can find the free sheet music here: imslp.org/wiki/Suite_de_trois_morceaux%2C_Op.116_(Godard%2C_Benjamin)
I also highly recommend the other two movements of this suite. 🎶😍
I listened to about 16:30-16:45 and I think that is the song Katie uses!
O yeah, I agree, it sounds kind of like an oboe. Maybe that's why I like it more than most flutes 😊
That is awesome! Love it!
I played years ago, and thinking of getting one. Was in a high school
band and used their instruments. A relative gave me one on loan, which I used for over a decade, but eventually wanted it back for another family member. I had the pads replaced and had an electric pickup
Which I included when I returned it to the owner. This flute in your video would be occasional instrument to take out to play. My wife likes to sing, so this would be a way to include myself in that interest.
Great review.
Sounds great! Good luck with the flute and thanks for watching!
This is an amazing flute for the price and quality and of course you make it sound absolutely beautiful Lance.
it's not just glory flute, its glory closed hole flute, very dangerous name indeed
@oldcowbb 👍🏾😂
Allegretto was satisfying to watch and hear you play.
Thanks so much! ❤️🎶
Indeed, when I hear the words ´glory´ and ´hole´ in the same phrase, it is hard to keep a straight face.
@eylam9690 Indeed.😄
Love the toss of the gloves...also baffled by the inclusion. Screw driver is eyeglass a cheap substitute in a pinch though a beginner is the LAST person I'd hand a screw driver to...
Also def right about fish skins. Though apparently animal intestines also happen on occasion 😳🤔
OH WOW I PLAYED SICILENNE MY FRESHMAN YEAR THAT TOOK ME BACK UNEXPECTEDLY this was a great video though
Hopefully good memories of Sicilienne!
Singularly one of the best review video of these category of flutes that I have viewed! Very well done! Subscribed! Also the white gloves are for those who will use this instrument in a marching band. They get free marching band white gloves.
Thanks so much for watching and thanks for letting me know about the gloves!!
2:32 I’m not sure if that was sarcasm or not but I’m pretty sure the gloves are for bands or something like that
Pretty nice work here Lance!
Watching Rupaul too much. I laughed so loud! The library is open. Thanks for a great review. Nice tone.
😂 Thanks for watching!
I want to see someone review one of the cheap open hole flutes.
I had one.
Open hole...B foot...Venus.
Sold it.
Really wish I hadn't.
It was really good tbh.
A great review!
But are no one going to pickup on the name "Glory Closed Hole" ':-)
LOL! Very unfortunate name indeed!
Or just going to your pawn shop. Excellent review. I played the flute when I was a kid and want to try it out again after playing the guitar for several years. I now think I will get a used one to try out. If it doesn’t work for me, I’ll just donate it to my local middle school.
The library is open ❤️
The glory hole is closed? noooooooooooo, not the glory hole!!!
LOL...well, you are the first one to go there...Lucifer!
@@LanceSuzuki Nah, sadly I went there too 🤣😂🤣 I had to rewind a couple times 🤣
Thanks for the review...I'll buy myself one as a repair project with only $100 to loose I'll take it apart and try to learn how to work on flutes. Beside having fun I may save lots of $$$ on my expansive flutes.
Excellent idea! I wish I could learn how to repair flutes!
hey lance! could you maybe do an armstrong flute (if you have one) VS one of your favorite flutes?
I was just here to see how to clean the flute. I'm leaving here understanding how weird flute players are. Especially the whole glasses thing. Why take them off before speaking to the camera? Kind of like a real life NPC. But damn can he play.
I don't think I've ever rewound a UA-cam video so fast as when you said "$29,000" pro flute". That seriously caught me off guard 🤣
You Know, For a flute that's under $100, it actually sounds really nice!
i just realized my mom lied to me and said she bought me an expensive flute, only for it to be this exact lower than $100 one :( no wonder it sounds worst than my classmates
Thanks Teacher Suzuki. After your really good demonstration; I have much confidence to buy this flute to start to learn Flute. Thanks again!
Wonderful! Good luck with your musical journey!
@@LanceSuzuki Yes thank you , Sensei!
Thank you for posting such an indepth review. I am getting this for my daughter's first flute. She will be starting 6th grade in a few weeks. I enjoyed your playing very much. Excellent job.
Thanks a lot, Ryan!
I just baought a new one, not working.. not sure if issue with flute or I dont know something
THANK YOU for doing a fantastic job breaking this down! 100% professional and excellent communication ⭐
Great, review and even better "concerto" !!! Thanks for the great moment
Beautiful review
You got some killer skills Lance.
Thanks, Rick!
Excellent playing . .
Thanks so much, John!
I mean, it's probably you... but it sounds pretty nice.
i can't hit the middle C, i don't know is it a skill issue or the flute is faulty
Hi, I'm.... Well, it's a long story, feel free to ignore if you wish:
I played the flute for a year in elementary school and then swapped to trumped during middle and most of highschool, because kids love to be rude where I live
I wish to play a instrument after some years of...
Well as school is trying to teach students how to handle the open world of life (I had to teach myself how to pay taxes and even then this is bare minimum, I'll need more know how on taxes)
I don't know what exactly what I'm looking for in my first personal flute to call my own, idk what to look for specifically because in 5th grade there was only one flute type, one rented to the school, 30 flutes, one brand, now there's many many brands and many reviews....
So I'm worried my desire to play the flute may be as much a standstill as trying to figure out how to use a 3d printer when I never even studied how to work one, most just say plug the power upload a file and it does the work, no one mentioned the extra work hidden behind the printer, so now I think I'm too cautious to make my own personal choice anymore...)
In your best opinion, which flute brand should I get, which cord style, I think overall I may wish for the closed holes over opened for familiarity but even that is a maybe there, as you recommend open hole for smoother tone and a more smooth play...
Flute type (b, c, f, g?) Which brand (glory, Yamaha, other?) And what style (open holed closed hole, metal material, and other possible information I may be missing)
I know this is a massive read and I know you may not have the answer as I'm asking for a very big step, if you can't answer, then just a short I can't truly answer will suffice, thank you anyways wether you answer it or not, the time you took to read it I will appreciate as I know I took plenty of your time making this
What did you end up getting?
Does anyone know how you can get instruments that don't use any animals products?? Often companies won't label their instruments as vegan (in fact, I've never seen that) and I wouldn't know which things to look for, like the fish-derived pads on a flute..
Can you please do a review for the silver plated Glory Open hole hand engraved 17 hole B-foot joint flute?
Hi Gina,
Thanks for watching! I will certainly look into that flute. It looks very pretty with the engraving!
Lance
@@LanceSuzuki Yes, it is a beautifully engraved flute! But I hope it sounds as good as it looks you know!
Why is the glory hole closed?
Excellent job Lance! Thank you for all the insights on the Glory Flute. Remarkable instrument for such a low initial cost… Keep up the good work! 👍
Hey Lance, that was a great review. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I just subscribed and I can't wait to see more of your videos. 😊
I've always enjoyed playing my beginners soprano recorder. I play for fun and relaxation.
I'm seriously considering an upgrading. Would the Glory flute have the notes l need to play Ave Maria?
Thanks for watching and subscribing! ❤️ Despite its low price tag, I can confirm that this flute has all the notes you would need.
@@LanceSuzuki Wow! Thank you so much for your feedback. 🤗
Lol, I have one of those wooden flutes. It has been relegated ornamental. 😄
The “Glory Hole” flute!
FFS, these kitchen sinks and their names!
🤣
Thanks for your video! I shared your video to someone who is interested in buying a flute on Amazon!☺️
Great! Thanks!
Gloves are for marching band! Lol!
All the pros I’ve watched are like “what are these for?” Which was my thought when I first saw them. 😂😂😂
1🏆Yamaha, 2 Muramatsu,3 Haynes.
Yes, it sounds good but how long will it last?
Thank you very much for this review, dear Lance! I was choosing some flute for my student and I did't knew this brend. And I love your sarcarsm! Warm regards
Thanks so much, Clara! ❤️
This helped me unbox this flute, thank you!
Get a new one, if it does break apart, just get a better quality one, just a suggestion, but, I cannot control you.
Because why do they come with it😂😂😂😂
The gloves are for band in high school I have to use them when I preformed for high school band
Is it harder to play with the gloves on?
Lance Suzuki yes it really slippery and it makes me feel like I’m going to drop my flute. But my director used to let us cut the tops off so we wouldn’t drop it.
@@katiethompson1406 wow that's kinda terrifying lol
Thanx for the validation on my Glory flute purchase! I played for some small audiences ....they liked the sound! Plus I did practice diligently!Only one question...I can hit the high C. I can play low D flat ..but I can't seem to play low C....any suggestions? Any adjustments needed?
Hi Curt,
It's hard to say without seeing the flute. Good luck!
Lance
Thanx Lance!
Hi again! Does really matter if the flute is closed hole or open hole?
Short answer...yes. Closed holes are generally easier to learn on for beginners as they figure out where the fingers go. However, open holes dramatically improve the sound of the flute. As a compromise, I ask my beginner students to purchase open hole flutes with plugs.
Play Thick as a Brick
Check out my friend’s channel “But on the Flute.” She does tons of covers and sounds AWESOME! ua-cam.com/channels/0DFlXh8G77WjAkgOH2BAwA.html
yeah, i love Glory holes
Thanks for a very informative video. I am interested to learn playing such a flute.
One can give the grease to a clarinetist if it's the same as cork grease. Otherwise, a brass player may be able to use it.
How much days did you keep saving your money?
A lot of saving for this flute! 🤣
Which did ypu buy?? I was going to to do the same...to rent to own is 40 a month...i looked and those flutes are thousands of dollars
Cupronickel - this answers the question about the gloves - some people are allergic to Nickel. Even e-guitar/bass players might be forced to use either gloves or strings of stainless steel to avoid reactions.
Good point! There's still the lip plate though...
Great video too
edit: i had some spelling errors
