in federalist no. 10, james madisons solution to factions is a larger public. he argues that within a smaller public, there is less diversity in views and ideologies. in a smaller group of people, oppression of the minority is more prone. however, by having a larger public, there will be more factions, diluting the power of each one. more factions means less power within each one because there is so many. federalist no. 10 acknowledges that factions are inevitable, but the only realistic way to control them is to have a larger public
So lucky I found this video. Our teacher made us read the original document and it was just a pain in the eyes I cant understand a single word of it😢 Thank you so much😭😭😭
Love it. Using the text to explain these documents is so helpful. Federalist #10 is probably my favorite government document. I love the way Madison structures his argument, first talking about the causes of factions then the disadvantages of direct democracy and then the advantages of Republic.
It's like a monopoly. If there's more businesses competing for the same market, it's less likely for one to take over. If there's only one, they have a monopoly.
Thank you so much for making this! Been looking for a comprehensive video about Federalist #10 like this for a long time. Cheers! P.S. I see you on Harvard campus in your profile pic. Nice! I’m at Harvard College. 🤘
Thank you so much for this video! With online learning, it is hard to understand concepts. I will definitely be using your channel for the AP exam. Thanks again :)
Much praise to you for this video. There are some crazy teachers out there asking students to read federalist papers it's true. That simply won't do, and I'm glad to see you, I'm not trying to read anything 'cause the clock just hit 2. (am)
the solution for factions is more factions through a larger republic. The various (non-majority) factions will compete with one another's interest thereby preventing the genesis of predominant faction.
Political parties are certainly a type of faction, since they are groups of ppl with some common goals coming together for some purpose. The type of negative factions that Madison sought to control, though, were unified by interests adverse to the rights of others or society more broadly. So are parties an example of a faction? Definitely. Are parties the negative faction that Madison is warning us about? That's probably up to you but I'd say usually probably not.
Thank you!!!! Although I'm doing Dual Credit Gov instead of AP, your videos helped me so much (especially since I opted for virtual school rn)! edit: grammar
Not so fast, the reason for many factions is diversity of opinion, and the size of A republic might not, reflect wide diversity. Diversity creates problems of its own when the needs of significant factions are not met, and such a rift was clearly demonstrated in the US civil war. The separate unifications of agricultural vs industrial confederations may have obviated that conflict. Smaller homogenous realms may be very peaceful , so as much as I admire Hamilton, Fed10 is really a weak argument for preferring a single federal umbrella. We currently have two broadly based super factions of similar scale ,that span the continent ,and possibly beyond. This is the worst case scenario, and in such a state it's often apparent that division along those lines might be advisable. Civil wars are protracted and brutal , the militaristic European history may be as much a reflection of diversity , so the combination of diverse factions under an ill advised common banner is no guarantee of harmony. There are in fact many small states which are not fighting amongst themselves or with others.
The Confederacy was a reaction to the election of Lincoln who was opposed to the expansion of slavery into the west, not necessarily the existence of slavery in the south. I imagine two competing republics instead of one government would have just gone to war sooner and continued to fight, and might be fighting to this day. Imagine what would have happened in the 20th century without a unified United States. It’s a frightening thought.
@@oscarheller4510 Oh wow reading it for school??? That's ambitious lol. Yeah, it's definitely a work that you have to fight and struggle with, but if you stick it out (admittedly a huge commitment) I think it's extremely rewarding

To what extent do political parties represent the factions Madison warned against in Federalist 10?
