Madison is attempting to portray the idea that a republican form of government is the most secure way to maintain our REPUBLIC, and that democracy may prevail at state levels, but the federal government should remain a republic and in small stature in order to fend off national-level threats to our constitutional rights. He is correct.

Yeah, but easier said than done. Not everyone is going to agree with this let alone go ALONG with it. It’s mentioned around the top of the page, regarding human opinions and everyone’s best interests.

The purpose of the federal government was to protect the rich minority against the leveling tendencies of popular democracy. To ensure that the wealthy elite would rule over the majority of men who don’t own property is the central purpose. Contempt for democracy was the thrust of the article.

@syourke3 Aristotle wrote that democracy is the corrupted form of Polity (such as our Republic) and that democracy is the system which benefits the rulers and the few.
Likewise, Plato pointed out that democracy devolves into oligarchy. So really you are flipping the script like every democrat loves to do.

Liberty is to faction what air is to fire. An ailment without which it instantly expires. But it could not be less folly to abolish liberty which is essential to politicial life, because it nurishes faction, than it would be to wish the annihilation of air which is essential to animal life, because it emparts to fire its destructive agency.
Faction (different parties) are necessary to political life and due to these factions, humans lack, or cease the ability to understand their own circumstance, and provide a unbias, good judgement for the whole, but instead choose synicism for the self. One of the two ways to end this factions is to destroy liberty or to provide all humans with the same possessions and opinions and feelings. The second is impossible, the first is moronic. As air is to fire liberty is to faction. Perhaps faction and fire are bad but without air animals would cease to exist as would politics without faction and liberty.

To distill what he’s saying: for a republic style government to work, people need the right to choice and free will, the issue with this is that through the choice and free will necessary for that government to function, people will form factions (like political parties for instance), and if one of these factions should gain a majority, their power would be unchecked. Madison suggests a large and diverse republic so that many interests may be in competition, so that they may prevent tyranny by the majority, insuring a more secure and democratic society.

It seems like the definition of democracy has changed since Madison's time. From #39:
If we resort for a criterion to the different principles on which different forms of government are established, we may define a republic to be, or at least may bestow that name on, a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of the people, and is administered by persons holding their offices during pleasure, for a limited period, or during good behavior.
I have not yet found a definition of democracy from James Madison. However, here he defines a pure democracy by what we now call direct democracy, whereas a republic is defined by what we now call representative democracy.
Also, Madison argues here that the structure of the government would prevent the government from allying with any one economic class over another, even the majority. At least he was right on the "majority" part.

Probably the one that gave Justice Thomas a half a million dollar vacation after a Supreme Court ruling benefited a company owned in part by the gifter
