I will never play a cane reed again- You have to get used to these synthetic reeds- But it's all I use now on everything - I haven't played a cane reed for over three years - I play here in Las Vegas and my buddies can't tell the difference and neither can the recording studio - the nice thing is the reeds are easy to clean they don't stink and they stay true to shape
Synthetic is much better. The tone is really clear. Most audience members don't have an opinion on dark vs. bright tone but they can definitely hear when a sound is fuzzy or not.
Personally like cane/wood reeds better. i think the synthetic reed gives me a sound that doesnt sound like a sax. however, we are all different and have different preferences.
Very true, also keep in mind that there is a certain adjustment as far as strength so you should check the conversion chart so you don't get something too soft and make you think its "different" than the sax.
Most tenor sounds are a little fuzzy, and tbh the synthetic sounds empty to my ears comparing to the cane ones..
I play in middle school band, and some bitch decided to steal my legere synthetic reed😡
@@ezrecordz same never found the reed either
This just opened up a whole new world and ballgame between reeds.
Agreed!
I've been using the same traditional reed for 9 months and i still sound great with it.
I used the same Rico reed for about five months. The look on my teacher's face when I told him this was priceless. I wonder how much it'll take me to go through an entire box of ten 1 1/2 Vandoren reeds I am about to order, and five Hemke reeds I just added to my online cart. Holy shit if the Vandoren reed I am still using lasted me for about 5 months or perhaps even more (I think I got it in october), then how much is an entire box of these things is gonna last??? 4 years??? Then who's gonna need Légère, honestly. And I still have the Rico reed, which is still in acceptable conditions. I mean, after a warm-up it produces acceptable results somebody in the audience might not even pay much attention to and think it sounds great. Though I should say that I have already ordered a Légère reed, only I don't know when it will be delivered to me.
dude get a new reed
Sgt. Dale it probably smells like shit
I tried synthetics and I never went back to cane reeds
Haha. :)
Was I supposed to get a legere reed ad before watching this video? XD
lol, I think its because of the title I guess :)
EnderMCx I got one too XD
EnderMCx i also got it
I'm guessing the manufacturer signed up to have their ad placed with videos featuring their reed. UA-cam determines if it actually gets placed, depending on the number of placements the manufacturer wants.
EnderMCx palheta com SOM de Teclado
I like the sound of the cane reed vs the synthetic reed. The cane reed sounds brighter, the synthetic stuffy.
I have had my plastic reed for 2 years now and it still plays like new!
legere reed commercial before a legere reed video
lol
I think there is a time and place for both but I feel like the cane reed has a beautiful dark sound but I also like the convenience and the cost effectiveness of the synthetics- a random bass clarinet player
What I like about the Legere/Other Synthetic reeds is its way more durable. I mainly play baritone sax and one time I accidentally hit the mouthpiece and Legere reed on my forehead and it didn't show any damage and played fine. But when I played Vandoren Blue, I tounge it for 10-20 minutes and the reed starts showing small chips and sometimes tears. Pedro for baritone sax I find 1 Legere reed around 1/2 the price of the Box of 5 Vandoren which expensive and yet the Legere feels like a immortal reed because my cane reeds die very fast.
+SuperNoob183828 hey buddy. Thanks for the comment. Yeah one huge factor besides better response and consistency is the cost. I've played some reed for a good 5-6 months before having to replace. Where as a can reed will need to be replaced in 2 weeks.
Very helpful video - thanks. I have been playing for less than 10 years and as I am now 70 years old, have decided that I don't have enough time left to mess about dealing with the frustrations of cane reeds - hah hah. I played at my daughter's wedding using a cane reed and spent ages fussing over the reed instead of enjoying the pudding.
I have tried most types of synthetic reed by now including Fibracell, Plasticover, Hahn and Legere and like them all in different ways. Even so, many people look down on them as somehow being inferior - I am always surprised at how reluctant some people are to try something new.
I haven't played Legere since the early days of learning to play and am going to give them another go having seen your videos. Just need to make some choices about strength, cut etc - currently use 2.5 Plasticover and 3 Fibracell on a 6* metal Florida Link tenor. Thought I might start by ordering a 2.5 Studio Cut.
Please keep the videos coming - it's so encouraging to hear your common-sense enthusiasm and great playing.
Hi! Thanks for the nice words. Check out the strength chart and be ready to try at least 2 so you can dial in the perfect strength for your set up. www.legere.com/strength-charts I teach adults of all ages, so I'm happy you've been playing for 10 years!
I played for my band teacher on a cane and legere reed and both times he he said the legere sounded better ( it was a blind test). I also got first chair and the highest score on my chairing test overall
I have been curious about the synthetic reeds. I have heard and read that they were expensive. When I used cane reeds, getting them wet was required. My instructor taught me a trick by taking a piece of sand paper and briefly sand down the top and sides of the cane reed. It improved the sound and getting it wet enough to play didn’t take long. I remember buying a box of Vandoren medium reeds and sanded down the whole box. It was different, but it worked.
I play guitar, and having to set it up each time i play would be a huge turn off, similarly i have an alto sax,but i have not touched it for about two years,i was learning it and the reed care just hacked me off,i have the vandoren blue reeds ,2 i think,to not have to mess around wetting a reed and all that stuff would be so much better, after which it comes down to are they harder to blow,as a total beginner the cane reeds were bad enough and knowing the cane reeds need to be broken in to sound good just added to the frustration,as long as the sax can sound the proper notes without squealing, the tone of the reed means nothing at this point.
Think i'll get a synthetic reed and start practicing again.
The softer synthetic reeds are pretty easy to make sound with.
Even on soprano sax, it's not that different from a broken in reed.
They soften up a bit with use, and then after like 2 month's worth of playing, they suddenly die.
So get a reed about every month and half or so or just always keep a back up.
If you put them in nearly boiling water and then put a book on them so the flat side doesn't bow up when they cool, you can bring them back to life for a bit.
I play very infrequent; and I guess you’d say I’m a few steps above a beginner. My horn sits on a stand, assembled and ready to play...next to my other instruments for weeks on end without being touched. But when I want to play it, I just want to pick up and go. The synth reeds are fabulous for this purpose alone. No wetting, no hassle. No need to visually inspect it before playing. Simply Slip off the mouthpiece cover and GO. They are a little pricey..... but if you take care of them, I think they are fabulous.
Just ordered my first Legere, after watching/listening to a LOT of these reviews, and not caring for the Plasticover that I was given to try. Even if I don't use them in concerts, this would save me a ton of money from not wearing out my cane reeds during near-daily practices! Thanks again for all you do for us!!!
I made the switch 25 years ago when tripping on outdoor gigs. For me it's Fibracell. Love em and will never go back to cane. Thanks for the video.
Im also a van doren cane reed user. I really love the sound. I thinks it sounds better then the synthetic one. Maybe i can give it a shot. And try the synthetic one?
sorry for my bad english im dutch.
Indochina?
no vandoren is good if you knew what you were talking about you'd agree there are plenty of pros that play on vandoren
@@Ethan-vp8tr I'm on a Java red 3 for bari sax... I made 1st chair regional band and 1st chair district... I'm running out of reeds now lol
@@matthewseebran3030 exactly god bless youre not an idiot vandoren makes good stuff
First off your Tenor setup sounds great. What mouth piece is that? As for the reeds... I feel like you had more control over the plastic reed but couldn't get that altisimo at the end. I was wondering if you can grab those altissimo notes easier on the cane. I have been playing Alto for nearly 30 years. I have used pretty much nothing but Java Green the whole time. Looking to experiment.
Thanks Pedro. Great video. Very helpful.
The reverb was annoying when you were talking. Glad you caught it.
Great video. Thanks. Quick comment that may not be obvious: The Legere folks service is outstanding. I broke my Legere reed somehow (i.e.., me being plain clumsy is not ruled out...) and they replaced it for free.
Thats awesome! :)
IM SO HAPPY, THE MINECRAFTER I USED TO WATCH PLAYS SAX. OMLLLL
Thank you I'm definitely going to try synthetic breeds and see how they work for me.
Well i didn't even knew synthetic reeds existed. Ive heard many teachers (I play clarinet) speak about cane/wood reeds like the v21s (vandoren) but never have i heard about synthetic reeds. i found the video quiet interesting :D
Great!
I bought a Légère Signature series bass clarinet reed for my older daughter two days ago so I'm anxious to hear her play on it versus a traditional cane reed. When I used to play B flat clarinet, it was in the early to mid 90s so before the era of synthetic reeds as an option. Thanks for giving your opinion in the video. It is cool to hear the difference between traditional versus synthetic just to get an idea. Nobody likes walking into a music store and stare at the reeds section feeling overwhelmed with selection and choices. I may go out and get some B flat Légère reeds for my younger daughter who is starting band this autumn.
On a side note, I smiled because you slightly resemble my boyfriend's eldest half brother José. Unsure if sax is a strength for him, just knew him for being a guitarist and drums.
I really like the sound of the cane reed for jazz or blues solos because it sounds sultry compared to the synthetic reed but i can definitely see using a synthetic reed when playing with a group or band. Thanks for posting this video.
+Terri Taylor thanks for watching!
Hai Pedro my favorite reeds are fibracell they have a more focused sound than cane and it also have a Buzz to the sound my setup on bari is Jody Jazz HR 7 and a 2.5 fibracell reed
my section is making fun of me just because i have better reeds now what do i do
get them all to get them too. And tell them to use the "MUSICBYPEDRO" code to save 15% off the Legere reeds. :)
Music By Pedro 😆
That self advertising was smooth af
Music By Pedro what harness are you using in this synthetic reed video? I cannot find one that looks like what I THINK I’m seeing. Help please...my neck needs some relief. Phillip Little aka TylerMultiSax. Thank you
Cool comparison. The synthetic reed sounded a little darker to my ears.
Have you ever tried different synthetic reed brands, like the Forestone Hinoki? I got one for free when Forestone was doing a promotion. Unfortunately, I got a M when I should have asked for a MS. So, I didn't get to appreciate it as much. The sound and tone was good, though. But I did find my current reed (a Vandoren ZZ 2 1/2) much more vibrant and lively. Maybe if I got the Hinoki in MS, I would have gotten a different sound.
+ketong71 I have tried other reeds but I'm so excited about the Legere and the consistency and tone they're able to deliver.
You make me want to learn a single reed instrument, but I physically can't. I used to play clarinet 7 years ago, but my jay pops out of place when I play it. Anyways, keep up the awesome work. You have an amazing talent, and you inspire many people including myself
Thanks for the nice words buddy!! :)
i used a rico cane reed throughout an entire school year and my tone just kept getting better haha
What harness are you using in this video? I’ve searched the interweb and haven’t found one that looks like what I THINK I’m seeing over your shoulders. My neck needs some relief. Many thanks.
So I picked up a "classic" legere reed and I like it much better! Thanks for the advice. I still like my fiberreed but I'm using this one for now on
+TONY FINNEY awesome! Glad to hear it. :)
Would a synthetic reed do well with a metal mouthpiece?
Hey Pedro I'm totally new to sax's instruments , I love instruments but never had a saxophone and I got a sax soprano as a b day gift just a couple weeks ago , it came with a mouthpiece number five and reed size 2 1/2 , I managed to blow all the high notes but I couldn't blow anything lower than low A , people recommended me to start with a lower size reed, I went out and bought a size 1# and it helped so much that I could actually go down from A all the way down to C , but I still can't reach the low B or Bb
MY QUESTION: is there anything else I can do ?should I change mouthpiece size ?will a synthetic Reed help me? . People say that I should start with the alto but I really love the soprano,
Thanxxx love ur videos
Thanx
Hi.
Thanks for your message.
You should start on an alto if you've never played saxophone, but if you've got a soprano, then you're just gonna have to work a little harder. As far as the mouthpiece is concerned I don't think there will be anything so wrong that it won't let you play. I do have a soprano sax embouchure video ua-cam.com/video/m8GyEJf9wIk/v-deo.html that will be able to help you make sure everything is set with your embouchure. Private lessons to get you going are also a good idea. Stick with the 2.5 reed if possible. The #1 i believe is way too soft.
Hope that helps.
Music By Pedro awesome I put back the #2 and I could play the same low notes now !!! Thanxxx
U do any Skype lessons
Practice long tones... On any horn you decide to play.
A WHOLE BOX ON 6-8 WEEKS!! Gee... how many hours a day do you play?
+Agustín Ríos well a box of 10 usually breaks down like this:
1-2 Bad Reeds (I won't practice on them, let alone perform with them)
4-6 Good reeds (for practice, and maybe last minute at a gig)
1-2 Great reeds (I will practice on them a bit, then leave them for performance reeds)
Hope that helps.
+Music By Pedro Yeah. I have a sax playing friend who tells me the same thing there will be some bad good and great
+mgninja (he's played for about 10 years so i trust him)
24 hours a day
you’re all noobs I’ve played sax for 63 years and I play at least 32 hours a day for the past 97 years.
I've been using the Legere Signature series for about a year.. And I definitely prefer it over the cane reed. The reed is much more consistent. With the cane i feel as is loosens up more and more through out my "jam" session
+Saul Salas awesome. I am also extremely satisfied with the change as the Legere reeds are more consistent and perform better than a cane Reed does for sure.
For the reason you mentioned, that cane reeds get dry and become unplayable, I've switched to Rico plastic coated reeds. I will give the synthetic reeds a try though.
Right now I play on fibracell reeds do the Legere Reeds sound any better in terms of the overall sound and can you play on the Legere Reeds for a longer time without losing any quality of tone? Right now I'm using a medium soft reed on a Soprano Saxophone. Also how much are they in Canadian funds, and how do they compare in the reed strength as compared with fibracell reeds?
The difference in sound is greater than comparisons I've heard of professional model saxes versus student model saxes using the same mouthpiece. I think it comes down to what your priorities are but strictly from a sound perspective the Legere to me sounded much warmer and less resonant whereas the cane reed was just the opposite brighter and more resonant. Too bad because I prefer the tone of the cane reed but wish it were available in a synthetic for consistency.
I got a legerdemain reed ad to, UA-cams algorithm gives you ads that pertain to the video, lol when I get my saxaphone though I’m going to get one of these easy to clean and reusable synthetic reeds
Thanks Pedro, love the advice as always and appreciate hearing the side-by-side comparison :D
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
I might have to see if there's a place in that sells the synthetic reeds in the UK since the Legere website says they only sell direct to Us and Canada at the moment, but it definitely seems like a good investment given how quickly I need to set up most of the time and it's my reed that slows me down.
That's awesome. Check Amazon or eBay to see if anyone sells them there.
As an engineer who works on plastics, I discovered you can bring a synthetic reed back to a half life by putting them in near boiling water for around 5 minutes and then keeping them flat with a book or something as they cool.
I'll be experimenting with higher temps and longer times on used up reeds to see if you can make them like new again.
The reason synthetic reeds wear out is because of the torsion forces acting on them as they flex or vibrate to create sound causes micro tears in the polymer.
So the theory is that heat can sort of melt these tears back together but, you can never just completely melt the plastic without completely deforming the reed, so you can only ever partially seal up all those micro tears, therefore while you can patch it for the moment, they'll open up again and also you'll still be creating new tears.
I'm considering getting a reed shaped aluminum cavity CNC'd and experimenting with that and running electric heat through the alluminum. maybe then you could completely remelt the reed without it loosing its shape.
But that's going through a whole lot just to not have to buy more reeds. XD
I think it's something saxophone repair men might wanna look into.
I'm motivated by a desire to recycle more than a desire to save money, but if you can get a jig that revitalized old plastic reeds, you can offer that as a service for ppl who save up their old reeds.
I tried playing another brand of synthetic reeds many years ago and was disappointed in their performance. However, I now find myself in a position professionally where I have to be ready to perform with very little preparation time.
So, to address that problem I want to look at the Legere reeds. I play Tenor Sax, Jazz with a hard rubber mouthpiece (Yamaha 5C), a lot in the low register (B flat to D sharp).
In your opinion, what strength/size Legere synthetic reed should I try first?
Check out the strength chart - www.legere.com/strength-charts
I've played cane reed yrs. I going give it synthetic try. Think be good one . To have as a back up synthetic reeds.
Great. Make sure you use the "MUSICBYPEDRO" code and get 15% off them bad boys :)
I might pick one up as backup, I try not to burn through reeds to fast and then sometimes I start to use one I've been using and it doesn't sound good and then I'm out of luck for the day.
I like to leave my C Soprano on the stand next to my computer. It can sit overnight or for hours. When I want to play a lick, I pick it up and it is good-to-go. I use plasticoat #3 reeds.
Would synthetic reeds be relevant in a marching scenario? I'm our only bari sax
+Hunter Alexander I personally have not tried synthetic reeds but from what I have read about them, they do not get affected by the weather like cane reeds do. So I would definitely give them a try for marching band.
In my experience synthetic reeds are amazing for marching band. I played tenor sax and after my first year with traditional reeds I switched and never went back when marching. For me it seemed like I could play louder with more control with the synthetic reed which was important when your trying to play over noisy crowds. Also being in Wisconsin and playing a night time football game halftime show in late fall where it's pretty cold out and your sitting outside in bleachers with your sax for the first half of the game the cane reed struggled due to temperature and humidity.
thank you sir. I'm playing a soprano sax. what size can you recommend for legere?
+mike tam I'd recommend starting on a 2.75 and seeing if it fits what you need.
thanks for making this dude.
+Sauzen anytime, dude! :)
Music by Pedro I was under the impression that the sax is a woodwind instrument, by placing the Légère reed...it become a synthetic instrument. Last ting...why do you have all that sponge on the back?
The saxophone is considered a woodwind instrument because it uses a reed to create the sound, regardless of what the reed is made from. The sponge on the back is acoustic foam used to damped and treat the room so there's no echo or unnecessary noise when I play my instrument.
Well, it SOUNDS like plastic.
Duh, as if a saxophone was a "natural" thing to begin with, like it grew on a tree or something...What's wrong with a synthetic reed? It's an instrument, a tool, one that either gives you the results you want, or not.
I`m new to the sax and enjoyed your vid.... I found it very informative and handy for me. I am looking to move to a signature synthetic reed, I am currently using a 1.5 natural tenor reed(dont know the make).. What strength signature reed do you think would be a fairly close match?
You should look up the make first, then head over to this link to compare and see what are the comparable strength - www.legere.com/strength-charts
They have a great exchange policy, so you can send it for a stronger if the one you order doesn't fit you. Also be sure to use "MUSICBYPEDRO" during check out to get 15% off :)
the cane Reed has a little more of a projected sound it's a brighter sound but the synthetic Reed has a darker tone
with some loss of tone but still sounds good I use fabercell reeds my self may I will try these as well
Can I still use your code for the reeds?
Hello! I am a saxophonist like you, which is how I found your channel, and I saw this video and started wondering. My mom is a bargain shopper, she won't buy anything that will be used up in less than 2-3 months that costs more than $15-$20. Making it hard on me because she only ever buys me packs of five. And I definitely took notice of your statement of synthetic reeds lasting longer than normal reeds. And here's my question. I play Alto sax (2 1/2 reeds) and have a "bit" of trouble with my reeds due to them never lasting more than a week or two at most. And my mother refuses to buy V-12 for some reason. And I was wondering if a 7th grader (I've been playing Alto sax for 1 and a half years, soon to be getting Soprano sax) should look into synthetic reeds, because what I really need is durability. Sorry for dragging on, but you're my best source right now. Thanks for any info you can give me!
+Noahminecraftguy If you want something to last so your mom won't complain about constantly buying new reeds then I would definitely suggest get a synth reed. Keep in mind of you do buy it you will most likely take a while to get use to playing it and adjust to how it sounds.

+Noahminecraftguy Thanks for your question. Yes, the synthetic reeds will last much longer than traditional cane reeds. It is difficult to say how long a reed will last on one person. It all depends on how much you perform, and how much you practice. I'd say, buy one for your alto, and see how long it lasts. If money is an issue, since your mom is the one making the final call, then I'd recommend just getting one, and then you can go back to cane reeds. Hope this helps.
+Music By Pedro thanks man! Really helps!
I'm interested in purchasing a legere but I'm not sure what strength to buy. Because I play tenor and for cane fees strength I use 2.5 so what legere strength should I play?
*cane reeds
As a multi-instrumentalist I just want to pick up the sax and play and that is what I do on Legere plastic reeds. No warm up, no nothing. Forget cane, synthetic is the way to go. Furthermore I have gotten 2 YEARS of consistent (but not full time) playing out of alto reeds (though there is a preservation trick to it) And the sound? can be identical to cane IF you drop a half/full strength. A 2.5 Vandoren cane equals a 1.5 or 2.0 synthetic depending on the cut and how you lay it on the mpc....
Pedro, mate, you put on a 3.5 cane and the 2.5 legere you have there..THEN repeat your sound test...they will sound identical, check it out.
Cheers Pete
+TresMamboMusicSchool thanks for the comment. I actually play #3 Legere all across my saxophones and I think thats the perfect strength. I've found strength to be a personal setting since only the player knows what kind of resistance. Thanks for watching the video and I'm glad to hear you use Legere! :)
My teachers hates plastic even though it is the player that most of makes the sound. I think the only difference would be at the very highest level of play but it still would be very different
Yeah, I've played on canes for years but I made the switch instantly after trying Synthetic.
What kind of effector do you use for the reverb?
have you ever plaid with a bamboo reed?
Do you have any advice I just switched to a tenor saxophone in my 6th grade band and I'm learning how to play?
The dream Team living practice
Ok
Hey Pedro. Thanks for this video. I've been playing tenor for about 40 years and have tried many different cane reeds (who hasn't), as well as the Rico Plasticover reeds. My tone has always been dark. Dark is great when playing in a classical wind ensemble and blending with brass like french horns, baritones, and trombones, but most of my work has been with amplified rock bands. I'm always looking to brighten up my tone for more presence. Would love your thoughts on cane vs. Plasticover vs. synthetic reeds.
+Robert Demetrician rdemetrician as you can imagine, I did try the Plasticover reeds before trying the Legeres. The response and sound that I want out of my set up is exactly what the Legere reeds offered. It was a no brainer that this was a great choice for me. Give them a try and let me know what you think. Make sure to use the strength chart to get a good starting size. I'm assuming you're playing on a hard rubber mouthpiece? If so make sure you offset the strength to a softer Reed if you're playing in a metal. Good luck and let me know what you end up getting. I also did a Classic Cut Legere and Signature Cut Legere so you can hear the difference between the two (when used in the way they're originally intended).
Thanks Pedro. I'm using a Van Doren V16 T45 metal mouthpiece, and I typically play a 3 strength reed in both cane and Plasticover. I used to play a Brilhart Level Air 7* but it was stolen.
+Robert Demetrician rdemetrician ok. If that works for your then I'd suggest starting with a #3 on the Legere signature. That is what I currently play and I love the response. Good luck!
Sorry to hear about the Brilhart. Yeah I think a 3 signature would be a great place to start if you're playing on a Metal mouthpiece. Good luck! :)
Is it easier to slap tongue on a synthetic? I haven't gotten to try it yet
Hey Pedro what about a plasticover reed, cane coated with plastic, thoughts?
I think that's a bit too much for the Reed to resonate freely. It should be one or the other. At least that's my thoughts.
I dig the plasticover reeds. Really when it comes to reeds you have to try them for yourself. I have been playing on a fiberreed and it's definitely my favorite synthetic.
I've bought a plasticover reed last year. I love its sounds.
I actually play a combo of both. I'm in marching band, which I play clarinet in, and everything is just tough on an instrument, so I switched over to a legere Reed and it works so much better in marching band circumstances. Life and cost felt like a stake in the heart, but I understand the value of it. I feel the sound comes out easier and not having to keep on top of wetness all practice or performance is a huge help. I've stuck with cane reeds for concert bands though because I've been told that they provide a better sound. With experience and your video I think I'm going to pick up another legere for my bass clarinet and maybe my tenor sax. Thanks for the lesson Pedro! And love your video style with the background and video inlay, keep it up!
I play tenor sax for jazz band, and I've been using the Java Vandorens. Are those actually any good? I haven't been able to find hard evidence about them, but they feel better than blue box V's.
Thanks buddy. Glad you're learning. I think for clarinet the synthetic still lacks a bit to give it that "woody" tone but they're getting close. :)
+Chance Price (Chancegamez) I've found that whatever other box vandoren has I can easily replicate with the blue box. It's a softer Reed at the end of it su just switch down 1/2 a strength and see if that works.
Ok so the cane sounds more full and has a more huskier tone while the synthetic is more louder too while synthetic sounds more automatic like it's ready to play and it stops when your embouchure isn't vibrating the Reed. However the cane Reed has a better tone if it's moist. But synthetic Reed's last longer.
Can a synthetic reed be satisfactorily adjusted ie if I buy a reed that is too strong can I 'sand' it down a little?
I don't think thats a good idea. Legere has a great exchange program, so you can send the one you buy back and they will send you the different size requested.
Uh I play a trumpet I don't know why I'm here
Tagerz Gaming 🤣
Tagerz Gaming That's why you're a trumpet player, and I'm not.lol
Tagerz Gaming, please
Just start playing the sax. Or any woodwind instrument in general
Lol wth😂😂
so Pedro, i play tenor sax and i was wondering if the brand of reed matters to get the right tone for jazz type songs, or is it all just skills with the whole mouth/jaw/whatever-else?
+Kristopher Arpero you should have different Reed strength and quality for classical vs jazz. A more stiff Reed for classical and a bit soft for jazz. Since the mouthpieces are very different.
thanks a ton man you're awesome!!!!
Kristopher Arpero no problem, I'll be making a video regarding classical mouthpieces and jazz mouthpieces so you can hear the difference for sure!
I've played Vandoren V-12 clarinet reeds now for over 15 years. I've tried over 25 different types/brands of reeds including very expensive handmade ones from Spain,Austria,Australia and Germany and nothing beats a good V-12. Sure you have to work on them but once you've done that they last a very long time and have evenness across the register and great balance between resistance and respond.
I've also tried this Légere synthetic reed and first I did the test at their homepage and heard which was cane and which was synthetic after one listening of both the opening of Brahms 2nd sonata and some staccato part. The synthetic reed lacks all the overtones that the cane reed has and the meat to the sound isn't there specially in the low register.
That being said they are great as a backup and when you need to play outside in a bad weather condition but for a formal concert I would never use them. My best V-12 reeds do get that honor ;)
+Stefan Sigfinnsson I've also been playing vandorens traditional for as long as you have and personally the response I've gotten out of the Legere is great for the multi instrumentalist and jazz musician. That being said, if you want the exact sound a cane Reed gives you on the bottom register, in a classical environment, then I can see why you'd pick it.
As with food, it comes down to personal flavor, but chicken is chicken. Unless you're looking for duck, then no chicken is going to give you duck.
Very cool to have professional musicians check out my videos.
Thank you for watching! :)
I also use a 2.5 Vandoren blue box...would a 3 be what I'm looking for?
Do you recommend synthetic reeds to beginner students?
Nykiea Hayes yes
I play the bari sax on 3 1/2 reeds. I'm interested in synthetic reeds but I don't know which brand to get. I also heard that synthetic reeds tend to run either hard or soft so what brand and what strength should I get? any help would be appreciated!
I forgot to mention that it is 3 1/2 Vandoran blue box that I play out of.
Check the strength chart here - www.legere.com/sites/default/files/images/Legere-Reeds-Saxophone-Strength-Chart.jpg
The signature reeds are thinner and are more suitable for jazz. If not the then try the Classic Cut. They're my favorite.
Please like this if you think a legere reed would be good for a clarinet player in marching band. I’m trying to decide if I want to get one or not.
can you do a traditional mouthpiece and a steel mouthpiece comparison. I'm curious about the minor differences
Yes. That video will be out next week. Thanks for watching and for the suggestion!
+Music By Pedro thanks
honestly liked the cane reed more. It had a more subltle sound than the synthetic.
Thinking about playing soprano sax.... Never played a wind instrument. Would you recommend it?
If you've never played a wind instrument and want to play saxophone, I'd recommend the alto sax.
+Music By Pedro The alto saxophone is super easy to play!
+Music By Pedro Alright. I'll give it a look!
Orangepuffs ; cool!
Legere sounds good to me! I have Fibracell on my alto and they too are great to play, very nice for beginners to know if it's you or the reed that's struggling! I only have one decent cane reed at the moment despite having lots of them, different makes and strengths. :( Very tempted by Legere now as maybe the Fibracell is a little bright, but other people I play with don't notice the difference. Thanks for your video.
was that a song or a freestyle that you were playing? If its a song I need it
Nah, it was just a little blurb I made up.
How do you know when to change the synthetic reeds? And are they durable
+ahrehl roberts they last a long time. It all depends on how much you play the reeds so I can't say how often.
Vandoren or légère, whoever will it be
I've always wondered. Does the strength of the reed affect your tone quality? I currently am playing on a Vandoren size 2 on alto. I'm considering trying out size 2 and a half, but I don't know if it will affect my tone quality. Thanks!
The tone does get slightly better as you step up in strength. You should be playing at least on a 2.5 regardless of your tone. Then step up to 3 if you want to try. A 2 Reed is just too soft for anything.
+Music By Pedro But I thought you pick a size that you are most comfortable with.
+Tenor Phone Then again, it also deals with the facing of your mouthpiece...God now I'm confused.
Tenor Phone yes, the mouthpiece helps determine what reed works also, its just a juggle between that and what you like in the reed strength as far as what you hear/tone.
+Music By Pedro Ah, thanks!
Thank you this was a great help .
+Steve Me anytime.
So Pedro, I play Bari and was looking into them I play a 3-1/2 cane Reed, what would you say in size wise a synthetic Reed would be
Because the only ones I found are large or medium and what not
+William DankSpear this should answer your question. www.legere.com/strength-charts
+Music By Pedro that helps a lot
+William DankSpear great. Let me know what you end up getting.
I was one that figured the synths would suck. Changed my mind. Changed my mind in a big way.
Its easy to come to that conclusion, until you've tried it :)
Dear Pedro do you prefer Legere to Fibracell reeds?
I prefer Legere over Fibracell. I've not been too keen on the sound I get out of one. Even after playing around and finding the correct strength.
Let me know what you end up getting. Be sure to check out the strength chart.

Thanks for your kind reply! I really don't like at all my sound when i am on synthetic reeds. I mean you save money and time but it's not the same. Think i ll go for BARI and Legere synthetics in order to get a decent perspective of this concept! Cheers!! You rock man!
TheFunkyKingston there is no difference in sound when you play on synthetic reeds, the issue might be that people get the wrong strength reed and end up with something too soft and make it "sound" different.
Do they chip at all?
What mouthpiece are you using? Inderbinen?
+Eduard Meier for my tenor I use a Ponzol.
Hai Pedro there is a special tone of synthetic reeds vs cane i play on fibracell, if the goal or purpose is that synthetic reeds must sound like cane then there is no point they are equal in the tone let synthetic reeds sounds synthetic and cane like cane thats what make the reeds so personaly and different i onley play fibracell 2.5 on tenor baritone soprano and alto sorrey for my bad inglish im Norwegian
What’s your jazz setup in this?
mai provato le rogerreeds?
This was helpful. Thank you!
Great video. Do you know how Legere reeds compare to Fibracell?
+jo black so I've tried Fibracell and I've always felt them to be a bit too soft for my taste. The Legeres give me the resistance and overall tone my ear wants to hear. Not to also mention the quality is incredible. 😀
Thank you!
I want that sax
what song are you playing?
+Elijah Dennings in the demo? Most likely something improvised...
I will Never go back to cane reeds. I want a consistent sound - which is exactly, what I get with my legere reeds.
