FINALLY! THANK YOU ALSO FOR REPLYING ON MY TWEET. BEEN POSTPONING MY BINGEWATCH OF YOUR VIDEOS BECAUSE THIS GOT DELETED AND SENDED A TWEET. THANK YOU FOR THE FAST RESPONSE!!
I saw this when you first put it out and loved it. Spent the last week looking for it again and was so disappointed when I figured out it had been flagged. So happy and thankful that you were able to get it back, this was easily one of the highlights in your wonderful review series.
Earlier today I noticed that it was gone and went and watched some dude react to the episode so I could experience it, and now you just so happen to have beaten the claim. What are the chances my guy. Anyways thank you for the awesome content I have been binge watching to relive everything that has happened with my favorite series!
Dude watch him talk about donflamigo and moria for 30 minutes. Kizaru the literal speed of light White beard can end the world Fujitora the man calls down meteors Black beard literal black hole Kaido literally hyper beams as a dragon. Honestly shadow man and string man aren't even that OP lol
Most authors: you can't just suddenly introduce dozens of new characters and expect the audience to care about them as much as the main cast! Oda: hehe Whitebeard goes gurarara then hugs Squardo
I mean nice joke but.....what makes Marineford work so well is that it didn't do that. Ace, Croc, Kizaru, Aokiji, Garp, Sengoku, Blackbeard, the Warlords, Shanks and certainly Whitebeard WERE all introduced before the war. Even Marco and Jozu were shown. It was the culmination of every thing and every character we'd seen clashing, 500 chapters in the making. So no you can't introduce dozens of new characters and expect the audience to care.
@@PaperPatriot yeah they had been introduced but for the most part none of them had any real character development other than the returning villains. Oda did a lot of ground work leading up to the arc but it's still ballsy as all hell to have over half a years worth manga riding on the ability of mostly side characters to hold interest. Of course people like the main cast they all have had whole arcs and years to develope. Here Oda had to make people care deeply about characters they've only known for just a dozen panels at most and he pulls it off. Look at Ors Jr. Gets dropped by the warlords with in about 3 chapters of being introduced, yet Oda manages to make him the center of two gut wrenching scenes as he falls and rises again just by telling a story of one time when he got a hat. That's talent.
@@PaperPatriot are you downplaying Oda's work? I'm sorry, in some other series even when the author already introduced, not just shown but literally introduced and gave some bg story of those characters, i still feel detached from them. I still don't care with them.
The reason why we love to listen Mark, or anyone who is new to One Piece read the manga is because we want to relive the experience we had when we first started reading/watching this series. I can't be the only one who wants to forget everything about One Piece just so we could start the journey at the beginning once again. But through them, we now can.
If there's a selective memory erasing potion, I'd gladly drink it! But I think that one of the charms of One Piece is obvious on re-read. With every new information we get, past chapters become even more important. It's a different experience everytime. Reading Wano changes my perspective of everything that happened since Punk Hazard. Stakes feel heavier and the foreshadowing is insane! These things are not something you'd get on your first read.
"The scar on the back is a swordsman's shame" - Zoro "And yet... neither that mighty body...nor his pirate spirit suffered even one coward's wound" - Whitebeard
A nice bit of attention to detail is that when Whitebeard died, Luffy was unconscious, which means he didn't hear Whitebeard saying that the One Piece is real, which was the ONE single thing he didn't want to know at the Sabaody Archipelago.
Sabo being killed by the Celestial Dragons or in essence (The World Government) gives the scene from Enies Lobby so much more meaning. When Luffy mutters the words “I know Robins enemy very well”
Broooo, you missed the reason for why Mr. 3 helped luffy with the wax key. He said something like " If I said I was helping you for my fallen brother (Mr. 2), would you laugh?" Luffy replies something like "I would never!". So wholesome.
"Thank you for loving me." To this date, Ace's last words still fuck me up badly. A man who went his entire life hating his father simply because of how the world saw him, and who at the moment he originally was to die, came to accept his fate, believing it inevitable. Then, through the efforts and love of the people who care for him most, he accepted that he does deserve to live and fought to escape, only to in the end give his life to protect his brother from death. And as he died, he came to truly accept his brother's and his crew's love for him, thanking them for it as his very last act.
Spoilers from Wano and chapter 1000 That's one of the main tearjerkers for me in Yamato's flashback about Ace. When Ace talks about Luffy's silly and childish dream, he fully expects Yamato to laugh at it. Insteads, Yamato declares he would never laugh at Luffy, because the greatest man Oden ever met said the exact same thing. And then, hearing for the first time when someone totally free of any hate, prejudice or knowledge about their blood relation talks about his father, Ace declares that this guy seemed to be amazing and that he would love to share a drink with him. I had to stop reading to regain some composure after that moment, because for coincidence, Ace learn more about who his father really was than in his entire life, without even knowing it. In that moment Ace wasn't hearing about the feared and powerful Pirate King, his lost father, the man who turn the world upside down, he heard about a man with a dream. A man that he would have genuinely liked, and that's almost as sad as it's beautiful
@@angelocosta6649 yesssss I say this all the time! If Ace had known more about Roger, he would have genuinely liked him. Even from someone like Whitebeard or Garp, maybe even Luffy his opinion definitely would’ve changed but it’s been rooted in him since he was young. Just thinking about that adds to his tragedy
@@strangething7379 the definition of evil in the D&D spectrum is selfish, chaotic neutral are not selfish but also not altruist, Luffy is chaotic neutral he does good or bad things based on whether he likes you
This is true, also in Japanese there is no differentiation between beard and mustache so from a linguistic point of view that’s why. However, if Whitebeard came up to me and asked me what I thought of his beard I would probably say ‘I thought you were dead’
In Japanese, 'Hige' means facial hairs (including both mustache & beard), so the name 'Shiro Hige' literally means 'White Facial Hairs', but for obvious reasons they dubbed it as 'White-beard'.
The reason whitebeard had so many crew members was because he would go to whoever he wanted to recuit and say "Ride my dick and call me daddy", now how can anyone refuse such an offer.
What's even more sad about the seperating of the crew is Brook was only on it for like a month and then all his new friends disappeared, props to his mental strength cause after all he'd been through losing everything again I'd think would make him finally crack
Sabo's death was the biggest take away from the flashback for me. The reason why Luffy cares so much about saving his comrades/Ace is because he had already experienced what losing a brother feels like. He'd literally risk anything not to feel that again
I love the parallels between Robin and Ace, how they are two characters that feel like they don't deserve to live and see their lives as a crime, while Luffy proves to both of them that they both have the right to live. The only difference is that Robin marked Luffy's first major victory against the World Government, while Ace marked his first major loss also against the Government.
I'm watching fishman island now, and I totally agree with you. I know it isn't the case, but I thought it would be neat if there was a twist where Roger is also Robin's father, linking her to Ace, and therefore Luffy. I thought of it when we heard that Dragon wanted to meet her, as well as how Roger and his crew found out about what happened during the void century.
And narratively, saving Robin was the coming of age of the straw hat crew where they became and unbreakable team that could concer anything. While failing to save ace was all to show that luffy is not ready. He's not strong enough yet.
"Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!" Doflamingo Probably my favoite quote of this arc, and possibly the entire series.
Best part is that with Doflamingo's later backstory imo it 100% makes sense for him to be the one to make that statement, and imo it feels more earned and real coming from him.
the moment Ace blocked Akainu's blow, he shielded Luffy with his back. a back with White beard symbol, his pride. it shows that Ace treasures Luffy more than his pride.
@Overdose Literally did. Even Mark noticed this, his inability to let things go and his pride in whitebeard as admirable as it may be, made him turn back and got him killed. He played right into Red Dogs hands.
The moment where Dadan meets Garp after the war and throws him to the ground is one of the most emotional scenes for me. It's a shame it wasn't brought up, but I know that Mark felt the same way about it.
We can give him a pass for that, this arc is just overflowing with content. Even after reading it so many times, I can still pick it up today and find things I missed before.
It's interesting how Vivi was able to tell that Luffy was sending a message from the tattoos on his arms. She couldn't figure out the meaning because she's not aware of the context but it shows her deep connection with the Straw Hats.
I think Dandan should have gotten a little more credit. She was the closest thing to a mother like figure in Ace and Luffy's childhood and clearly understands them better than Garp. That scene with her confronting Garp, instantly puts me to tears. Garp has been ignoring the reality that both Ace and Luffy had no way of becoming a part of the Marines because of their respective dad's background. Garp went home looking for pity and he was faced with the reality that he was so caught up in his own feelings, that he wasn't even considering what his blood related grandson was going through. Luffy- who spent his entire childhood looking up to Ace and treated as his own brother. With the fact that Sabo was killed off, they only had each other to depend on. And then you have Garp who dropped Ace off, and would visit here and there when work put him in the area. A mountain bandit that he put in charge of raising Luffy and Ace cares more about their well being then Garp, who did the bare minimum in helping Luffy and Ace escape/ raising them.
@@mattwayne9128 Yup, he prefers more lawful kiddos to train. Which raises the question why he left HIS kiddos in the care of a bandit. Seems like he has no friends.
Honestly I never thought he came home looking for pity. He came looking for dadan to beat the crap out of him as a punishment he thought he deserves. But when he sees dadans tears he gets a punishment far worse then any beating could be.
And the best part? Dadan’s actions feel totally organic, and are a result of character development! There was one piece of development I saw from Dadan which I really liked at the beginning of the Post-Marineford flashback. Dadan said that she doesn’t really care if Ace dies or not. Later, when they believe Sabo to be killed, Ace rushes out to take revenge, and Dadan steps in and prevents him from doing anything reckless, not wanting him to die a nobody.
Pity was the last thing Garp wanted. I think you're deeply misunderstanding him. It's not that he didn't care about Luffy and Ace. He was completely bound by his duty to the point where he lost what he cared about most. He finally broke free of that after watching Ace die (when he would've killed Akainu if Sengoku didn't literally pin him to the ground) but it was too late. The fact that Ace's death affected him so strongly he was going to do something entirely contrary to his code as a marine (kill an admiral) shows how much he truly did care. It made him go against everything that defined Garp, the hero of the marines. Nobody else in the series is bound so strongly by such a code, so it's hard to compare. He is easily one of the most well written and used "Lawful Good" characters I have ever seen. He wanted Ace and Luffy in the marines precisely because he *did* understand them. He knew they wouldn't lead ordinary, safe lives, no matter what, so he wanted them to at least be somewhere he could protect them with everything he had. The marines would've fully accepted Luffy and Ace if Garp had told them to; there's no question. He just wouldn't have told anyone Ace was the son of the pirate king and that would be that. Sengoku would probably also keep his mouth shut if Ace was a trainee under Garp. He didn't love them less for becoming pirates or not understand why they did it. He hated that he couldn't protect them anymore. That's why he was asking why Ace couldn't have just become a marine on the execution platform--it wasn't because he didn't understand Ace's decision or was ignoring reality. You can understand why someone did something while still wishing they had decided differently.
“Even in death, his body did not fall. His figure, taking down enemies while losing half of his head, was truly monstrous. The total number of sword wounds he received in this battle was 267. He was shot by 152 bullets and was hit by 46 cannonballs. And despite all this, his proud back, over the course of his entire life as a pirate, never received a single scar from running away!”
whitebeard is a part of xebecs crew, meaning they lost, and seeing how whitebeard is not dead then or is captured, he mightve escape (ran from battle) or more interestingly he teamed up with roger and garp to help beat xebec thats why he is friends with roger and its says that he didnt ran from a single battle
Half his face gone in the manga but 2 giant holes in his chest in the anime. That is probably one of the most hardcore injury in the series and I do like the change in the anime better because that makes more sense than half his brain being gone and WB still standing after that.

Can we apreciate Mark's editor. The hints he's contantly throwing at us are amazing and can only be accomplished by a huge OP fan and a great editor. Shoutout to you!
"This is the best story I've ever read" And there it is, the thing I can't get away from. Trying to explain that I like One Piece more than any book or movie is tough sometimes, so I'll be stealing some of your points next time :)
Yeah it's super hard to explain. For me this Series along with mr morj videos have really helped me understand why I like the series so much and how well thought out the story actually is
Honestly? Even if One Piece ends horribly, or if Oda fails to deliver on the ending, I would be satisfied. This is an amazing journey through and through, and that is what matters.
When the manga first reached this point I was in college but I wasn’t actively reading it. However on the suggestion of a friend I started reading consistently and after the death of Ace I remember crying and having to quickly compose myself. I mentioned something on Facebook about it and a classmate of mine commented about how devastated he was because of that chapter. Sometime after he went missing after a weekend out of town and later we found out he died. I never continued reading one piece in full because I always associated these chapters with that time of my life and found it hard not to think about my classmate. After seeing you pick this up after all the DB commentary I wanted to give OP a try through your videos. I’m glad I made it this far and maybe one day I’ll read OP from the beginning. I’d like to think my classmate would have liked your analysis. Thanks Mark.
Omg, this is so devastated. I remember I need to wait around 3 or 6 months from the shocked Luffy until he recovered by remembering his friends were all still there. I hope you will find joy by continue reading One Piece. It still magically brings me a lot of feelings.
Audy Rahmat Dian K I read maybe half an arc before Marine Ford and then until the time skip, I didn’t keep up with it after my friends disappearance and eventual death
I hope someone reminds Mark that oda already showed akainu in robin's flashback and how he was the one to destroy the rescue ship with the ohara fugitives as well as one of the commanders during the buster call. Goda is a master of foreshadowing
We have hated Akainu from the first moment we met him. He is a war criminal and has also committed crimes against humanity all in the name of "AbSoLuTe JuStIcE".
I loved how Oda called all the levels of Impel Down “Hell”, which means Luffy went through Hell and back to get Ace, which makes his death even more heartbreaking!
The Marineford Arc and all previous arcs were a giant message for me elevating one Piece even further: Effort and 'shounen spirit' isn't enough. The world of Op is much bigger and much more complex than that. Mark put it perfectly. Over the last 3 arcs luffy has been defying odds and we all thought he would succeed because he always does. This is a shounen story where determination & friendship always trimuph over everthing else. We all learnt it over 13 years, we joked about it, we made our peace with the sentence 'noone dies in one Piece present'... and then he pulled the rug out from under us! And it changed the tone of teh story and what it possible to this day. 99 other good mangaka would have chosen the feel good solution, killing 1-2 unimportant minor characters for emphasize and follwing the shounen pattern. Yet Oda did not and it amde it so incredebly tragic that I still feel it over 7 years klater. But it also elevated One Piece to anotehr sphere of managa quality for good!
@@MaJuV When I was younger (and i read the Manga at that time) I hated it. I didnt pay attention to any Franky panels lmao. Now that im catching up again from the beginning, im watching the Anime and now I don't have strong feelings about him.. he's okay 5-6/10 But his Dressrosa design is f*cking awesome LOL
A little detail I enjoyed in this arc that I never see mentioned is that Ace absolutely stomps in the war once he gets freed. He fights with so much ferocity and it makes so much sense given he’s been chained up all this time and he’s not injured like the others.
I mean its great seeing him unchained but also like He was definitely injured! They were torturing him in impel down and he's covered in minor injuries and suffering feom exhaustion long before the war starts
FYI: there is no linguistic difference in Japanese between beard and mustache, it’s just called facial hair. Hence why “whitebeard”doesn’t have a beard in the way we would think.
I liked it overall, but the pacing in the war is rediculously bad. There's so much exposition that it slows down what was supposed to be a hectic scramble into a crawl. It's ultimately necessary exposition in the long run and worth the time, but there's a time and place for exposition dumps, and it was not here. It felt like a hundred times the plot rams on the brakes and quickly returns to a sprint which made it exhausting to read.
There is something interesting to note that I haven't really seen anyone pick up on when it comes to the Marineford Arc. Earlier in the arc, Whitebeard makes the proclamation that he refuses to die until he sees a bright future for his sons. After Luffy release his Conqueror's Haki, that's when Whitebeard orders everyone to backup Luffy with everything they have. That is the moment Whitebeard saw the bright Future for his sons, and resolved himself to die.
Captain Roger!! I hope you're doing okay. Hope your health, your family and everything is okay. Im just a regular subscriber but I wanted to take the time to say that I appreciate you and your content!
wow i wasn't expecting rogersbase to be commenting on this. and i don't think anyone else was because this comment only has 134 likes so far. Let's get him up there guys..
For real. Her reaction to the news of Ace's death hit me just as hard as anything involving Garp. She was blackmailed into becoming a surrogate mother, and while she resented Garp she truly loved her boys. She deserves such a happy ending.
I just love how Oda can introduce a character in one arc where they are also killed off and still make them leave an incredibly lasting impression on the story and characters. In most series Whitebeard would just be some random leader type who you forget about some time later but his story reverberates throughout the entire series. Dozens of characters were only fully introduced in this arc and yet they're still so well realized. Amazing.
to be fair we do at least see him a little bit before this arc so that we know who he is, and we've heard him mentioned a good handful of times beyond that. If whitebeard was introduced for the first time ever without anything alluding to him before this, it wouldn't be as strong imo. Oda makes sure that we at least have heard of this guy in the back of our minds well before this arc begins so that we can be excited to find out more information about him when the time comes. if you introduce a character for the first time and then dump a load of exposition on them, it's boring cause it feels like you're having to do required reading to just get to the good bits. If you allude to a character hundreds of chapters ago, even if you don't know much about him then. Now when he's finally shown in full and we learn more about him, it feels more like a mystery being uncovered and it's exciting. It also helps that for the most part we learn about Whitebeard through his actions and not just some anime kid with glasses giving us his biography as they watch the war from a set of bleachers along the side.
TO MARK & MARK'S EDITOR: From all of us I just want to say thank you so much for the fun ride so far! You've both put a lot of hard work into this series and I hope you both enjoy your break. Can't wait for the next one.
I love every big moment that everyone else loves (Ace's Death, Whitebeard's Death, The 3 admirals blocking the shockwave, etc) but one of the ones i love the most is when Sengoku holds down Garp to stop him from killing Akainu. (Also Kizaru's interaction with his weed dealer Benn Beckman)
Some points that deserved emphasis: -- So much regarding Blackbeard. Not even to speak of him forcing the prisoners of Impel Down Level 6, criminals so feared they were erased from all historic record, to _fight to the death_ with the winners joining him, but the revelation that he effectively _set all this up,_ that he's been planning this ever since we first heard of him, and has collected on everyone else's efforts _flawlessly._ There's only one winner of the Marineford War, and it's _him._ Also, declaring "THIS IS...MY AGE!!" essentially declaring himself the Pirate King on the spot and solidifying his place as potentially the core antagonist for the series. -- Coby's big brass balls moment, where he actually stops the war for precious few seconds. Pirates, Marines, everyone is made to take notice as he screams to anyone who's listening how absurd this is, how the Marines are perpetuating violence against pirates who don't even want to fight anymore, abandoning their dying and wounded, making all the sacrificed lives thus far look as if they'd been for nothing, and that Akainu _tries to kill him for this,_ showing both the true underlying spirit of the Marines and the true corrupt nature of the powers in charge of them. -- Shanks' actual actions. Not only do all parties shit themselves collectively because _another_ freaking Emperor just showed up, but Shanks _compels everyone present to cry on his behalf, _*_including the Admirals and Akainu._* He caps it off saying that if anyone left wants to fight, they'll be fighting _him and his crew._ Also, choice moment of interaction between Shanks and Blackbeard, where we're reminded that Blackbeard's the one who scarred his face, and Shanks clearly takes the prospect of having to fight him seriously, even though Teach backs down. And of course, editor had to include the hypest shot from the very end that caps off the conclusion of the first half of the story; *GO TO NEW WORLD*
Also the little fact that before Shanks arrives at Marineford he literally fought ANOTHER YONKO. This man and his crew show up from a probably giant Fight unscathed and ready to casually take on the Marines and Blackbeard. Favorite moment of mine how Kizaru immedialy stops his shot when he notices Ben Beckman
The death of Whitebeard will be remembered as one of the forever greats ‘yet on his back, may not a single wound’ and ‘ONE PIECE IS REAL’ have been immortalized as the great moments of One Piece
There's a theory that Oda likes to draw parties and Luffy likes to party, and that's why there's almost no death. The few times there's no party is when Ace dies and Bon Clay sacrifices himself (though everyone else is happy about their freedom, Luffy just sits there). If you take Kaizoku-ou (pirate king) and split it into kai zoku ou you get something like "gathering everyone/family for a party"
This arc is One Piece's turning point in terms of scope and tone of the whole story. Thank you for the great video it made me relive those grandiose moments again.
@@maji112 I agree but IMHO it was a slight foreshadowing. Marineford with the first One Piece deaths in the present, was the confirmation as the tone shift was cemented. Before there were very high stakes like a more dangerous Enies Lobby retrieval arc.
Tbh, there was a chance for interesting narrative analysis; inspecting the implementation of the timeskip and just how well it works in reseting the stakes after such tremendeous escalation the past saga.
Whitebeard’s death is my favorite moment in all of one piece From his final words being about how the one piece is real to the fact he died still standing even after hundreds of wounds, to his backstory revealing his entire life goal was to have a family, which perfectly contextualizes the relationship he had with his crew, to even the significance of the theme of a change in eras just makes the writing in this moment absolutely god tier spectacular.
'Even his friend Koby, who he knocked to the floor without hesitation.' Dude, he didn't knock Koby to the floor. He knocked Koby into the air VIA the floor. Dude bounced. I felt so bad for him XD
Note Ace's Tattoo on his arm. See the crossed out "S"? At first fans thought it was just an amusing little detail. And then you realize that it's meant to symbolize "Sabo" and his untimely death. And this tattoo was visible on his arm from the firse time we saw him in the Alabasta arc. Really puts into perspective how far ahead Oda has planned the series. See, the main difference between Oda and other artists is that Oda knows *exactly* where his series is going and how he is going to end it. And it shows even in the details. One of the great things about One Piece is that it rewards you for paying attention.
When Sabo left as a kid to become a pirate his flag was the letter "S" corssed out with two bones, so i always thought Ace's tatoo was supposed to reference that and symbolize Sabo that way
Luffy's crying over Ace's death literally broke me. In the episode where it happened and the ones that followed it after.... "Ace is dead, isn't he?" *man*
It's so human it hurts. I lost a important older brother figure in my youth and I still wake up having to remember he died. I get a small portion of that kind of grief
When I was first reading it, I accidentally spoiled myself by searching up aces name. But even when it happened I cried so hard. I might’ve known that ace would die but seeing not only luffy but literally everyone trying their best to save him kind of made me hope that that search result was a lie. When I read through the portion of luffy and ace teaming up I cried cus I knew what was to come, but I also didn’t want to believe it. And then when it happened it broke me. It was probably the hardest I’ve ever cried
“Revealing to me that Shanks doesn’t make a habit of saving people…and that for some reason Luffy is special.” A year after this observation the current state of the manga does make things…interesting. I won’t spoil but Mark may have advanced observation haki
Mihawk’s quote @11:55 can be seen as a foreshadowing for what makes Luffy special. To be specific, him saying “this power has no restraint” and “heaven sent”. If he knew about Luffy’s power, how? So interesting!
“Heaven sent” is likely referring to Luffy’s falling out of the sky at Marineford, and the power having “no restraint” is likely Mihawk saying he’ll have no mercy on Luffy. But, I can certainly imagine that Mihawk could know of Luffy’s power because of the relationship Mihawk and Shanks have, which still isn’t all that clear.
Honestly Zoro was my favorite character in One Piece up until about Sabaody, but Marineford was really where Luffy blossomed as a character. Probably my favorite anime character of all time.
It's been about 10 years and I'm still not over Ace. That's just how impactful his death was written and how well Oda comes back to it. In this wonderful world he created that is just so alive.
@@victorarroyo5401 Luffy counting his nakama was like a small success after all his failures (losing them at Sabaody, almost losing his new friends at Amazon Lily, coming close to death and even failing to reach Ace in time in Impel Down and, in the end, Ace's untimely death). It capped off the saga of failure for Luffy nicely and showed that from rock bottom he can only go up.
This arc is in my opinion the greatest arc in all of anime, the way that ace's death is done and how it ties to one piece's theme of how just being born isn't a crime is just masterful. When I read the chapter where he dies and Ace says "thank you for loving me" hit me in a way nothing else ever has in media and made me cry and feel emotions that I never have before. I also, love how Ace was a fan favorite character despite not actually having that prominent of a role in the story overall. But for Oda to kill that character at only the halfway point of his series is just crazy. I remember the whole time reading thinking there is 0% chance that Ace actually dies here, because Luffy will come in and save him and everything will be okay like it always has been in the series up to this point. When I saw that panel of Akainu punching through aces chest/stomach I was just stunned. I was thinking there is no way he can survive that, Oda had certainly had characters survive stuff before but I didn't see anyway that he could make Ace survive this. Then the dialogue of the chapter that was titled Portgas D Ace's Death was incredible. What is so crazy to me is everthing I just described was about one character in this arc and there are so many other incredible moments in this arc this is just one of them and my personal favorite.
the Editor is so on point with everything he does, its incredible, i literally see no room for improvement. And the way he forshadows the next arc is fucking perfect, I need to know who this man is so I can simp for him.
Oda just showed us the imperfect Docking to foreshadow it. If Robin had agreed, it would've been OP and at that point in story, that much power would have been a Hack.
I'm watching this all for the first time at the age of 31. There is no way as a kid I could have appreciated this level of storytelling anywhere near as much as I can now. It's as you say, ineffable. It's a stroke of luck that I get to watch your first impressions along with my own and it's been a truly wonderful experience and has made it all the more richer for it.
We finished the series (up to now) a few months ago. Little over a year. Sometimes it's an amazing ride and you binge episodes non stop and sometimes it's slow and you'll consider dropping the series only to watch a couple more, hit a character/situation that revs the motor and off you go again.
I remember reading Marineford arc. I either expected Whitebeard or Ace to die, but not both! And you really should’ve covered Dadan more. Her beating up Garp was a great scene.
Whitebeard? Whitebeard had 2 feet and an arm in the grave even before they reach Marineford....his spacing out and his life flashing before his eyes was happening even before they got there and he even told Marco he hopes the Rescue doesn't take long as there isn't much time left after one of his deathbed space outs The plan always was to die with the eyes of the world on him and to yell "The One-piece is real" to revive the Pirate Era Sengoku thought he could crush the Pirate Era with 5d chess but Whitebeard called checkmate on him and he knew IIT which is why Sengoku yelled"YOU BASTARD" and Whitebeard had a trollface grin
I've reread One Piece 3 times, watched all 900+ episodes twice and yet remembering all these moments through your video, you still managed to make me cry. This might be my favorite UA-cam video. Hava a good break, you definitly deserve it.
@@atzero8954 That still makes him evil, using the law only pushes him from chaotic to lawful Buuuut I don't see doffy going anywhere NEAR lawful ever, he's the very definition of chaotic
Can you imagine that there are people out there who hate on this magnificent piece of fiction? How can you seriously hate a series so full of heart, creativity, charm, emotion and flat out epicness? It is just beyond me...
i like the imagination oda puts into his world building mysteries and designs and making you care for them...his ability to make likeable characters and harsh scenarios so you root for them from a hit to miss ratio is second to none cause he rarely misses..he is good at making a safer black and white hero vs villain dynamic....the same way I like how kishimoto can mix the twos sides and form a harsher real fate where black and white mixes and use themes morality messages narrative symbolism to subvert expectations and sorta make us audience members uncomfortable making me care about stuff i never thought I would in a million years and making you want to see unlikeable characters ..he is good at writing unlikeable characters that you still care about and want to see on screen and thats a real skill itself its just different and unique and I like that about hims style..its safe to do what oda does in terms of making black and white characters to be for or love to be against...ksihi chose not to do that as much and while his story can be more simplistic in the end stripped down to its core then oda's masterful subtle brilliance both guys are masters at different things and I am proud they are so popular
The shear length of the story definitely takes a bit of the shine away... However all that world building is probably the biggest reason Marineford is 1 of the best arcs in all of anime/Manga (its my personal favorite arc of all time) I do hope 1 day the One Piece story can be seen in a more digestible version focusing on simply progressing the main plot so anyone who already knows the One Piece world can just enjoy the main story without constant side stories interrupting the flow of the plot. We also need mini series that shows us things like the Shanks Mihawk fight, but that isn't really relevant to the rest of my comment
I just wanna touch on how you said this arc was about failure, and you're totally right, and with that said, I wanna bring it back to Thriller Bark with the Moria arc. Moria pretty much predicted something like this would happen when he was being defeated, because the samething happened to him when he went to New World (well not the exact same, but he also felt like a failure just like Luffy did) He got his ass kicked in New World and by Kaido (if I recall correctly) and he lost his crew too which completely wrecked his spirit and caused him to deteriorate. He wasnt the same pirate he used to be because of how much his spirt was crushed, and so when he was almost beaten by Luffy, he relinquished his shadows because he wanted Luffy to face the same hardships he did at New World and see how he reacts Luffy said it himself, he felt so weak for not saving Ace and he nearly gave up on everything just like Moria did, but thanks to Jinbe and a few others, Luffy remembered he still had his crew and instead of giving up, he chose to continue on and to work even harder to become stronger
I hope Mark gets around to reading this. Also makes you feel a little worse for Moria when you realize that he no longer had the one thing that saved Luffy: A crew. If luck/plot armor had not shown up in the form of Kuma, Luffy would not have had a crew to live for. Moria is Luffy without plot armor
@@adiljaved1330 I hate how people throw this buzzword around (plot armour) without actually knowing what it means. Its plot armor when a character gets saved without a logical explanation when the autor has written himself into a corner. This is not at all what happened with Kuma. It was logical, had a ton of context and made all sense in the world when the pieces come together and you learn more about his background and his relationships with other characters.
I've watched One Piece so many times now, but seeing the story told through the eyes of someone who's never read/watched it before is so satisfying and wonderful. Your editor has done a great job with this series and I can't wait for you to return from your break. :)
what really breaks my heart is just one single line luffy says during his mental breakdown while jinbei tries to calm him down "king of the pirates? what a joke!" this honestly hit me the absolute hardest because to me, that means his dream of being king of the pirates isn't his main dream, his #1 goal. If it was he would never give it up, luffy is just that type of guy even in a broken situation like this. His true #1 goal was to have an adventure with his friends and family, in which in that moment he has lost them all, until jinbei reminds him that his friends are still out there waiting, and caring for him, the final family he has left, which springs him back to life. If it wasn't for his crew, luffy would've never recovered, he would've never re-found his #1 goal, but his friends reminded him, his friends ARE his #1 goal, becoming king of the pirates is secondary to his friends, and he would give it all up for them, just to make sure his #1 dream goal comes true of keeping them safe, which in poetic fashion, was also ace's true main goal, to protect his brother and to make sure he survived, which is why he gave his life up just to save him, cause like luffy, he wanted to save the ones who loved him and the ones he loves.
I've spent months trying to get this back from copyright hell. I had to eat a strike but its here. Please like and share if you enjoy :)

Most authors: you can't just suddenly introduce dozens of new characters and expect the audience to care about them as much as the main cast!
Oda: hehe Whitebeard goes gurarara then hugs Squardo
Mangaka of Bleach: what do you mean I can't???

The reason why we love to listen Mark, or anyone who is new to One Piece read the manga is because we want to relive the experience we had when we first started reading/watching this series.
I can't be the only one who wants to forget everything about One Piece just so we could start the journey at the beginning once again. But through them, we now can.
I want to delete my memories of one piece just to relive them again.

I wholeheartedly agree.

"Thank you for loving me."
To this date, Ace's last words still fuck me up badly.
Spoilers from Wano and chapter 1000
That's one of the main tearjerkers for me in Yamato's flashback about Ace. Ah Whitebeard. A man so strong he grew a mustache, called it a beard and nobody ever questioned it.

The moment where Dadan meets Garp after the war and throws him to the ground is one of the most emotional scenes for me. It's a shame it wasn't brought up, but I know that Mark felt the same way about it.

It's interesting how Vivi was able to tell that Luffy was sending a message from the tattoos on his arms. She couldn't figure out the meaning because she's not aware of the context but it shows her deep connection with the Straw Hats.
Test
They did the same thing with the X....
Yup, I love that Vivi knows that it was so uncharacteristic of luffy to do all of that act
Tbf, Garp is fucking Garp. He can't have Luffy and Ace hanging around him.
My all time favorite scene is when dadan confronts Garp about not saving ace
I can't watch that scene without crying
@@mohj6042 I can

@@mohj6042 That coupled with Makino trying to defend Garp and ending up bursting into tears when she remembers teaching kid Ace good manners.
This is the superior translation imo
Yeah, exactly. I liked it a lot more. Simply "there was no scar on his back" - because he never turned it on the enemy.
whitebeard is a part of xebecs crew, meaning they lost, and seeing how whitebeard is not dead then or is captured, he mightve escape (ran from battle) or more interestingly he teamed up with roger and garp to help beat xebec thats why he is friends with roger and its says that he didnt ran from a single battle
Half his face gone in the manga but 2 giant holes in his chest in the anime. That is probably one of the most hardcore injury in the series and I do like the change in the anime better because that makes more sense than half his brain being gone and WB still standing after that.
Then around the same time Bleach tried to do the same thing, but their old man was full of scars on his back.

Wait.. So you ve read OP until Marine Ford arc when your classmate died and get traumatized
Or you never read OP before until now?
Im confused
Specially, he went through seven levels of hell. A reference to Dante's Inferno.

A little detail I enjoyed in this arc that I never see mentioned is that Ace absolutely stomps in the war once he gets freed. He fights with so much ferocity and it makes so much sense given he’s been chained up all this time and he’s not injured like the others.
I mean its great seeing him unchained but also like
He was definitely injured! They were torturing him in impel down and he's covered in minor injuries and suffering feom exhaustion long before the war starts

White mustache doesn't sound right. :/
Mystery solved!
Can we all take a moment to realize that marineford is only 30 chapters long?!?!?! I could've sworn it was longer.
Wait what?
I liked it overall, but the pacing in the war is rediculously bad. There's so much exposition that it slows down what was supposed to be a hectic scramble into a crawl.
It's ultimately necessary exposition in the long run and worth the time, but there's a time and place for exposition dumps, and it was not here. It felt like a hundred times the plot rams on the brakes and quickly returns to a sprint which made it exhausting to read.
@kollie79
The story is still really good, just not the pacing. For the manga, anyway.

I thought it dragged a bit, is all. Geez.
I'm never ready for Luffy's breakdown, everytime it hits right on the tear spot.
It doesn't matter how many times I experience it.

Sad the only mention of Dadan was a still image, the woman is the closest thing Luffy or Ace ever had to a real mother
Wdym theres still crocodile
crocomon hahahahaha
For real. Her reaction to the news of Ace's death hit me just as hard as anything involving Garp. She was blackmailed into becoming a surrogate mother, and while she resented Garp she truly loved her boys. She deserves such a happy ending.
They talked about in one piece virgin podcast you can go and listen there.
That scene of Dadan beating the shit out of Garp for letting Ace die was one of the most heart wrenching moments for me
Coby’s speech is so powerful for me and so are so many more moments in this arc it is crazy.
It felt kinda off to me ace is a murder and white beard and the other pirates are attacking military headquarters to protect a criminal
He's the strongest person after all
TO MARK & MARK'S EDITOR: From all of us I just want to say thank you so much for the fun ride so far!
From that moment I knew Garp was way Stronger then a Regular VA or The Most Strongest Marine & it got confirmed afterwards with Rocks reveal
If i had a pirate rew, I would only want three other people to be on it.
1. Borsalino
2. Kizaru
3. Bennnnnnnnnn Beckmannnnnnnnn
Most people cry after watching a sad 2 hr movie or a 12 episode anime, but to see a MC lose and grieve someone 574 chapters later hits different.
Some points that deserved emphasis:
-- So much regarding Blackbeard.
And of course, editor had to include the hypest shot from the very end that caps off the conclusion of the first half of the story;
*GO TO NEW WORLD*
Shut the up
Also the little fact that before Shanks arrives at Marineford he literally fought ANOTHER YONKO. This man and his crew show up from a probably giant Fight unscathed and ready to casually take on the Marines and Blackbeard. Favorite moment of mine how Kizaru immedialy stops his shot when he notices Ben Beckman

Mark is going through his own time-skip interval in order to get stronger for the next few arcs.

This arc is One Piece's turning point in terms of scope and tone of the whole story. Thank you for the great video it made me relive those grandiose moments again.
this whole saga was imo, starting from sabody
@@maji112 I agree but IMHO it was a slight foreshadowing. Marineford with the first One Piece deaths in the present, was the confirmation as the tone shift was cemented. Before there were very high stakes like a more dangerous Enies Lobby retrieval arc.
I'm so happy he included Post war with Marineford instead of adding it to Return of Saboady like he originally planned
Tbh, there was a chance for interesting narrative analysis; inspecting the implementation of the timeskip and just how well it works in reseting the stakes after such tremendeous escalation the past saga.
Whitebeard’s death is my favorite moment in all of one piece
From his final words being about how the one piece is real to the fact he died still standing even after hundreds of wounds, to his backstory revealing his entire life goal was to have a family, which perfectly contextualizes the relationship he had with his crew, to even the significance of the theme of a change in eras just makes the writing in this moment absolutely god tier spectacular.

@@Mikhail_the_great he already has the tattoo before he starts his journey so it can't be for the spades

Luffy's crying over Ace's death literally broke me. In the episode where it happened and the ones that followed it after....
"Ace is dead, isn't he?"
*man*
It's so human it hurts.
Personally I just roasted him for dying while wearing those goofy shoes.

Finally, a man of t a s t e
......i mean it obvious isn t it?
Obviously you don’t know bout Captain Buggy
Very underrated character.
Very
I would say Mr. 3 but Croc is a good pick too.
I'm watching this all for the first time at the age of 31. There is no way as a kid I could have appreciated this level of storytelling anywhere near as much as I can now. It's as you say, ineffable. It's a stroke of luck that I get to watch your first impressions along with my own and it's been a truly wonderful experience and has made it all the more richer for it.
im really happy you enjoy it!!!
I’m starting one piece tonight boys, wish me luck, and thanks to Mark for introducing me to this
We finished the series (up to now) a few months ago. Little over a year. Sometimes it's an amazing ride and you binge episodes non stop and sometimes it's slow and you'll consider dropping the series only to watch a couple more, hit a character/situation that revs the motor and off you go again.
Good luck and too bad you got spoiled about the story watching Mark's videos. But you're going to enjoy the manga anyway, dont worry
did you really have to get half the story spoiled before you started reading?
enjoy it ~
Good luck
I remember reading Marineford arc. I either expected Whitebeard or Ace to die, but not both!
And you really should’ve covered Dadan more. Her beating up Garp was a great scene.
Whitebeard?
Whitebeard had 2 feet and an arm in the grave even before they reach Marineford....his spacing out and his life flashing before his eyes was happening even before they got there and he even told Marco he hopes the Rescue doesn't take long as there isn't much time left after one of his deathbed space outs
The plan always was to die with the eyes of the world on him and to yell "The One-piece is real" to revive the Pirate Era
Sengoku thought he could crush the Pirate Era with 5d chess but Whitebeard called checkmate on him and he knew IIT which is why Sengoku yelled"YOU BASTARD" and Whitebeard had a trollface grin
Mark: talks about leitmotives
Editor: smiles in playing binks sake at reverse mountain
Btw I love you editor keep up the amazing work
He's like the Oda of editors.
Actually he's E.D.Tor, user of the hint hint no mi. And yes, he's a natural enemy of god
Leitmotifs but yeah
which minutes is it?
@@ilmanakbar was a while back on the reverse mountain video
Crocodile is definitely the MVP of the arc. Plus, he's such a daddy *inhales*
Are gonna exhale? Its been 7 months

I've reread One Piece 3 times, watched all 900+ episodes twice and yet remembering all these moments through your video, you still managed to make me cry. This might be my favorite UA-cam video. Hava a good break, you definitly deserve it.
Mark: Doflamingo is chaotic neutral. me: *laughs in sixteen holy bullets*
chuggles while getting crucified
He’s definitely chaotic evil, but it’s easy to not see that at this point in the story.
@@PartialKredit I'd say he is chaotic neutral, since he does use the law when it suits him.
@@atzero8954 That still makes him evil, using the law only pushes him from chaotic to lawful
Buuuut I don't see doffy going anywhere NEAR lawful ever, he's the very definition of chaotic
@@serafinschaller1688 You're right, in my head I was mixing it up with neutral evil.
Why Toei isn't just offering you tons of ad money to use this is beyond me. This is the absolute most amazing endorsement of a fantastic epic
However all that world building is probably the biggest reason Marineford is 1 of the best arcs in all of anime/Manga (its my personal favorite arc of all time)
I do hope 1 day the One Piece story can be seen in a more digestible version focusing on simply progressing the main plot so anyone who already knows the One Piece world can just enjoy the main story without constant side stories interrupting the flow of the plot.
We also need mini series that shows us things like the Shanks Mihawk fight, but that isn't really relevant to the rest of my comment
I honestly think it was the 4kids dub that killed a lot of US interest
it’s the length. i disliked it for a while just because the length was so intimidating
@@bobbydipshit3772 Ironically the length is the biggest strength of the series. :)
I just wanna touch on how you said this arc was about failure, and you're totally right, and with that said, I wanna bring it back to Thriller Bark with the Moria arc. Moria pretty much predicted something like this would happen when he was being defeated, because the samething happened to him when he went to New World (well not the exact same, but he also felt like a failure just like Luffy did)
He got his ass kicked in New World and by Kaido (if I recall correctly) and he lost his crew too which completely wrecked his spirit and caused him to deteriorate.
He wasnt the same pirate he used to be because of how much his spirt was crushed, and so when he was almost beaten by Luffy, he relinquished his shadows because he wanted Luffy to face the same hardships he did at New World and see how he reacts
Luffy said it himself, he felt so weak for not saving Ace and he nearly gave up on everything just like Moria did, but thanks to Jinbe and a few others, Luffy remembered he still had his crew and instead of giving up, he chose to continue on and to work even harder to become stronger
SiroBenju Here’s the thing, Kuma is a one use only plot armour. After that it’s just, bam! He’s gone, he’s now a human weapon with no emotion.
Random Person Doesnt change the fact that he was used as plot armor
@@adiljaved1330 I hate how people throw this buzzword around (plot armour) without actually knowing what it means. Its plot armor when a character gets saved without a logical explanation when the autor has written himself into a corner. This is not at all what happened with Kuma. It was logical, had a ton of context and made all sense in the world when the pieces come together and you learn more about his background and his relationships with other characters.
In a way Moria was right. Because if his crew members were really dead- Jinbe wouldn't have any words to put Luffy back on his feet.
I've watched One Piece so many times now, but seeing the story told through the eyes of someone who's never read/watched it before is so satisfying and wonderful. Your editor has done a great job with this series and I can't wait for you to return from your break. :)
what really breaks my heart is just one single line luffy says during his mental breakdown while jinbei tries to calm him down
"king of the pirates? what a joke!"
this honestly hit me the absolute hardest because to me, that means his dream of being king of the pirates isn't his main dream, his #1 goal.
