Yup - I'm 2 years younger born 76 and from a rock community in 90s being a skater and surfer yet never really understood the words when I was young but now listening to all 90s and offspring words it's hitting my heart deep
This song was a haven when I lost my father almost 15 years ago. It has sadness, anger, and a sliver of hope rolled into one. He was 54 years old, so I definitely felt like he was taken before his time.
You wouldn’t tell from some of their music, but these guys are academics. The lead singer actually has a PhD in Molecular Biology. They started in college, played for their school’s radio, and landed mainstream success.
Yup. Dexter is his nickname. Like Poindexter. Keep em separated was inspired by his Berkeley professor when he had cross contamination with his bacteria samples.
This has been one of my favorite Offspring songs since I was a kid, but it hits me like a truck now that i lost my mom a couple months ago. It’s already a tragic, beautiful song about mourning someone you love and can’t imagine life without, and relating it to my mom, who was like my best friend makes it almost too painful to listen to now. But it is very cathartic in a way as well, so i am thankful that the song exists in the first place.
The Offspring were EXTREMELY influencial to my teen years. I was a shy outcast angsty teen and really channeled a lot of frustration listening to their music. I delt with anxiety, depression, etc. I was introduced through the album Smash (Gotta Get Away is still prob my #1 favorite song of theirs!). But I quickly discovered Ignition and their self titled album. All classics (to me at least). I've appreciated their later stuff as I've grown older. All their albums are good imo. Please react to Gotta Get Away! (I happen to like the official video that goes with it as well.)
Smash was the one that did it for me. The first album I bought with my own money, age 12. The title track gave me everything I needed. To hell with fitting in, I'm gonna be me.
Love The Offspring! One of my fav concert moments was this song. At Red Rocks, while it was raining, Dexter played this solo on a grand piano. Absolutely fantastic!
Off spring was basically a Grunge / punk rock band in the 90's that became more mainstream late 90's and early 2000's. They've always been one of my favourites since i blasted their first few albums in my first Truck and still get in the mood to listen to their stuff today.
This song never ceases to make me cry. 2 years ago, my best friend got killed, he was pushed off of a cliff, and I watched him fall to his death. I still haven't come to terms with it, but there are 2 songs that remind me of that moment. Gone Away helped immensely ease the pain, especially with why Dexter wrote it, if you go into that story. But the other song was Hysteria by Def Leppard, as that was the song that was on the radio as I drove as fast as I could to the police station searching for help.
Im 31. I heard this song for the first time that i can consciously remember at 9. The evolution of the lyrics on top of the vibrational frequency has truley changed my life.... it has taken on so many different meanings for me! Now as a grown man when i hear this song it brings tears to my eyes..
For a long time they didn't disclose the source of the song. Finally they said where it came from. Apparently the singer and his wife were in a store and there was a drive by shooting, with people shooting into the store. I think he said that it made him think, 'what if my wife was killed in this event?' and that led to the song. It's a great song. Touches a lot of people.
When I was 21 my best friend was killed in a motor cycle crash. We played this song at the funeral. His mom was not sure she should let me pick because she had never liked our music. After playing it she said she understood and was glad I talked her into playing it. I still cry every time it plays and I am in my 50s.
The song was released in 1997, which was 26 years ago. If you were 21 at the time the oldest you could possibly be is 47. I'm an accountant and something is not adding up.
Sorry for your loss. My very close friend died in a car crash during police pursuit at the night of my best friend's bachelor party in 2013. I should have taken him to the party that evening but plans have changed and he was killed on spot. This song hits like a train every damn single time.
My favorite band, I have a few offspring tattoos! Gone Away is the most beautiful song of all time ❤️ they have another song called end of the line which is my favorite by them.
Another great reaction I like this song by either them or Five Finger Death Punch each has its own appeal I remember when this came out the kind of music in my wheel house although a little more punk side still a good rock song and enjoyable to the ears as always your ride or die Forever thanks for the fun ride Eyyyy Oooo
Great reaction Rosalie! The Offspring, when I got into them in the 90's, with their third album Smash, would bebwhat I'd call 'surf grunge', but their origins were in hardcore punk. This album had fun tracks like: Come Out and Play, Gotta Get Away, Bad Habit, but they already showed some songs with meaning (lyrically) with Self Esteem. They always seemed to keep the grunge/punk vibe. This track certainly showed a more serious side to their songwriting. Now for a track that's completely opposite to serious, you should check Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)!!
I Would... Its hard to lose those you love and define depending on circumstances i would take your place. To save my pain and yours Such a powerful song and sung at an all out wail. The band's newer slower version is like when maybe you have come to terms

You need to react to the 2021 version of this song. Dexter stripped it back to a grand piano and his vocals, and it was perfectly timed for the pandemic.
To me another perfect example where initially the music seems to contradict the message of the song. If you don't pay attention to the lyrics this might as well be your ordinary typical rock song with some punk elements and a very catchy hook. But that's also why I love music so much. It has the power to accentuate your feelings. If you're hurt or full of joy there's always the right song to channel or express your mood and emotions!
I bought "Ixnay on the Hombre" which is the album this song is on. I actually bought the album for the last track which is titled "Change the World" because it was the end credits song for an anime I watched and I really liked the song. The whole album is great and has many great tracks on it. From "Disclaimer" to "Change the World" I love listening to it.
I just did a quick search, dunno if it's correct of course.... What is the story behind the song Gone Away by the Offspring? The track was reportedly inspired by a real life incident in which singer Dexter Holland and his wife were shaken up after having to seek cover when an ice cream shop they were patronizing was riddled with gunfire by gang members.
i cant deal, its so unfair. the mic slipping out of his hand i think represents the bond with your lost loved one as time pulls you farther and farther away. at least that how it feels to me.
I always figured someone who writes songs for Offspring was a therapist or went to a therapist for a while, it's just the language he uses particularly in songs like Self-Esteem. It's that "therapyeese ", I'm sure you'll know what I mean.
You said something in your review that actually is one of the things that I've had the hardest time getting past in my Grief. I lost my wife to cancer nine years ago. She was 36. In an interview, Dexter said he wrote this song almost immediately after nearly being killed in a drive by shooting while shopping at a store with his wife.
I like this sooooo much better then the Five Finger remake. (Cover) The story behind the meaning of this song is a pretty messed up story. It is out there on YT if anyone wants to hear if from the man himself.

PLZ react to Away, and Tattoo Rings by Cam Cole. His while 1st album is AWESOME!!! He does a cover of California Dreaming that's awesome (video called Sounds From the Van #7)
The sound of my childhood. Not sure what I think about the Five Finger Death Punch cover, though I will say the musicianship and arrangement are more to my liking. But I have mixed feelings, being a veteran. Still, the original is what I grew up with, and you rocked the reaction. As a side note, considering your journey, if no one has mentioned them, you should definitely take a look at Heilung. Anoana is probably the smoothest intro. In Maidjan is a bit longer.
WHY NOT Tom Mac Donald System ??? please...I know it's just me but... cherry on top... ? I've been solber after you told me I could 😂🤣😂god it's been good even my wife likes it !!!!
You would perhaps enjoy a track from a DJ called INZO, and the track name is "Overthinker". I am not asking for a reaction, this is just a respectful recommendation. I am not saying you overthink either. My guess is that you would just enjoy the words of Alan Watts mixed in with post-dubstep EDM. The CloZee remix and music video is probably better, and some of the live forms are amazing. (Live at The Caverns for example. CloZee.) If you have studied philosophy and psychology, then I am sure you hear bars on bars on bars when that weird dude Alan Watts chose to speak lol.
Weird you haven't reacted to another offspring song. It seems to pull in the views. The views on their music videos are not indicative of their popularity.
These guys were massive when this first came out. I still can't believe a rock/punk band could have members that are almost certified geniuses. Dexter's background is crazy. One of those bands where even 30 years later I know all the lyrics to all their songs.
They are from garden Grove California. Dexter and Kevin k went to Pacifica high school where the lead guitarist noodles was working as a janitor. They have the number one selling record album from an Indy record company. Definitely check out more of them. They are great.
Turning 49 this year and I have to say my generation was blessed with the music we had come out while we were growing up.
Hey, im 16(2007) and I love The Offspring, they really are a big part of me

Seen Offspring last October, he played this on piano.

Grew up with Offspring. Class band. Good going getting some exposure to them.
If I could like the video twice, I would. Best reaction I've found to one of the absolute best Offspring songs.

From what I understand, Dexter wrote this song about his girlfriend at the time getting killed in a car accident.

What is the story behind the song Gone Away by the Offspring?
The track was reportedly inspired by a real life incident in which singer Dexter Holland and his wife were shaken up after having to seek cover when an ice cream shop they were patronizing was riddled with gunfire by gang members.
correct. I heard the same in an interview after I did the reaction. see link in the description
i believe it was rather a "near death" event that led him to want to write about death and loss. (see link to an interview in the description) :)

Το...Ψ...στον τοίχο, τι ακριβώς είναι αλήθεια ;;;;
Ψ...on the wall, what does it for ????
FFDP has a really good cover of this song that is impacful because it's about losing those in the military. ❤😊
I believe this song written after his girlfriend was killed in a car crash?
You would perhaps enjoy a track from a DJ called INZO, and the track name is "Overthinker".
I am not asking for a reaction, this is just a respectful recommendation. I am not saying you overthink either. My guess is that you would just enjoy the words of Alan Watts mixed in with post-dubstep EDM.
The CloZee remix and music video is probably better, and some of the live forms are amazing. (Live at The Caverns for example. CloZee.)
If you have studied philosophy and psychology, then I am sure you hear bars on bars on bars when that weird dude Alan Watts chose to speak lol.
If a PhD is "certified genius" then there's no "almost." And Noodles. 🙂
@@princeofcupspoc9073 I know. Just didn't know their exactly degrees, etc so I said it that way.
They are from garden Grove California. Dexter and Kevin k went to Pacifica high school where the lead guitarist noodles was working as a janitor.
They have the number one selling record album from an Indy record company.
Definitely check out more of them. They are great.
