    I got my Wingman for $15 at yard sale. Had to recondition the main blade and turned the ruler/file into an awl with a hole 1/2cm from the end which can be used for sewing. LOVE this multi tool. I have five, and this is my favorite -- by far!

    I've had & used the WINGMAN for over a decade, knife blade & scissors are still tight, the scissors in particular still work great, the spring loaded pliars make the whole tool worth while, definitely a handy multitool.

    You might have got a lemon, my wingman works great. I actually carry it more than my wave as it’s quite a bit lighter and I don’t feel it in the pocket as much.

      @razio, my sentiment exactly. I don't own the Wingman but I have had the Sidekick for several years. My copy of the Sidekick doesn't have any of the production issues described here. I think he's got a lemon. Leatherman has a 25-year warranty so whoever is dissatisfied with any of the products is encouraged to exchange or get his/hers repaired by Leatherman.

      I agree with most of the points. I have a sidekick,got it a week ago. First one returned on the next day after purchase, blade lock failed occasionally and was a risk of injury. Replaced by local shop straight away. Second one is ok in this department, no wobble when locked, but there was play in the pliers. Got that fixed with a solution found on the web. This is not a leatherman quality I have heard so much about. Feels like made in china and maybe assembled locally but without proper QC nor attention to detail. I like it very much but it gives you mixed feelings, like having an item from Ali

    The plus and straight line symbols on the screwdrivers are there for you to see when the tool is closed therefore allowing you to know which one to push through before pulling it fully up!

    Can opener hella useful when I am away from home eating in random places. I sharpened it so it work more efficiently. The Wingman is hella customizable if you put a bit of thought into it. Some people just be lazy.

  • @dordonio

    Your Wingman does not have a scissor problem. After taking out the scissors, you must full rotate the scissor blade counter clockwise to engage the scissor spring/rod.

    I ordered two Wingman tools. Both were shit. They felt like Leatherman had moved production to China. Just terrible. And the rattle. As I am deploying the blade, the handles flap up and down like a toy. Got two replacement ones. Again, junk. Then I ordered a Rebar (had a Micra, liked the cool design). Night and day. I 'll get a second Rebar just because it's awesome. It's a shame that many people got introduced to Leatherman tools with the Wingman, because it does not accurately represent what a Leatherman tool is. Or at least what it is supposed to be.
    Great points all around. Why people praise this thing all over the web is beyond me.

      @@andrewc9790 that’s true, it did click. He made sure to engage the scissors at the end with the scissor blades open to allow for spring engagement too.
      Looking at mine, there is a folded lip for the beginning part of the spring to engage and use as a backstop. It looks like his isn’t backstopped. Perhaps the metal isn’t folded enough or flattened out during use or adjustment.

    I really appreciate a review from someone who has actually used the tool they are "reviewing". The fact that you have plenty of experience with different tools lends even more credence to your opinion. I have never owned a Leatherman tool, but was seriously thinking about asking for one from my wife for Christmas, this year. And I have been watching tons of Wingman, and Sidekick fanboy videos. But, after this review I think I will be asking for the Rebar, old school, quality built tool, to truly appreciate the virtues of owning a Leatherman. Thanks to you again, for taking the time to share your experiences.

      I have owned the Sidekick (similar to the Wingman but without the scissors) for over five years now and I used mine on a regular basis. My copy has none of the production issues described here; he may very well have bought a lemon. So how is it when a product is praised it must be from a fanboy, but when the same product criticized it becomes an "honest review," simply because the owner receives a lemon? Leatherman has a 25-year warranty, anyone who's not satisfied should contact Leatherman, IMHO.

  • @FT4Freedom

    Just bought my second wingman. I feel that Leatherman has a lot of room for improvement even with their Wave +. I'm a bit surprised that they don't seem to listen to their customers. I'd rather pay them $500 to customize a tool to my needs. I'd rather they provide the ability to tinker with and swap multiple plier heads. And they should partner with Fiskars to provide premium scissors. The reason I bought the second wingman is I don't think the wave is better value per dollar. I got the Wingman kit with the Style CS for $44. The two tools will partner well on a kydex sheath. Also I carve a thin wire cutter into the side of the clamshell tool using a dremel and a diamond file. It breaks trip wire just fine. For a $30 tool the Wingman is the most tool per dollar hands down.

    I hope you have already realized you have to pull the scissors all the way up until the lock is locked with a solid "click" sound before the spring starts working. It's a security design which prevent you from using the scissors before properly locked. When you fully open the scissors (or when you believed you have already fully opened), pull the scissors with extra force until you get the solid "click" which activate the tool lock. The scissors can be used without problem. To me, personally, it is a very nice MT as scissors is a deal breaker to me. With this price range, it is difficult to get a nice MT with decent scissors. However, I hate the combo knife.. seriously, but scissors... yeah.. I need scissors...

    I have a wingman that I have carried every day for about a year at work and I agree with a lot of what you say here. However, the knife on mine has absolutely no play and for the last few months I haven't even carried another knife while at work. My scissors also have never given me the problems yours have. The small driver/file on mine chipped trying to tighten a hose clamp and I agree that the ruler is an absolute waste. All that being said, I saw them on clearance last week for 15 bucks and bought another one without hesitation.

    Good to see an honest review of this thing for once! My friend had one with all the same problems and I always see people praise these as budget tool gods, but the fact is, the quality just isn't there. I've never owned a higher quality leatherman, but everyone I know who does swears by them. Keep up the great vids!

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  9 років тому

      +Cyclone Outdoors Yeah! I wouldn't decline one if given it for free, but there is nothing worse in my opinion for Leatherman, than to be introducing people to its brand with the very middling tool, in all senses of the word.

    • @DL-oi9gl
      @DL-oi9gl 6 років тому

      Perhaps your friend and the unfortunate others got a lemon. No doubt there could be a quality assurance issue with the Wingman even if just a small percentage of the owners have problems. I personally have the Sidekick and the knife is rock solid, no wiggling at all. Leatherman has a 25-year warranty, by all means send the tool back and exchange for a new one!
      I personally have owned and used Leatherman multitools for over 26 years, and my latest purchase was a Sidekick five years ago, and it's been trouble free. And trust me, Leatherman had their share of QA issues on previous models as well. It's just that before the days of social media and UA-cam, when there was an issue, people just sent the Leatherman in and exchange for a new one (or repairs), problem solved!!!
      Yes the Wingman and Sidekick line carrys a lower price tag, but for me what makes them attractive is not the price, but the weight and the choice of tools. The bigger Leatherman tools are better made in general, but they are also substantially heavier, with many tools I hardly use at all. Why bother carrying the extra tools/weight and tearing the jeans pocket when one has no use for them? Instead of accusing Leatherman of being trying to produce and sell "cheap/budget" products to gain the market, I'd rather look at it as their attempt to compete with Swiss Army Knives in the EDC market, price and weight class wise.

    I think usage rate information is needed here. I would guess that 75% of Leatherman owners like to have one on their belt when they go for a hike, bike ride, or just want to be prepared. These people probably actually take the tool out of the holster once a week or less. For that crowd, this tool is sufficient. If you are an electrician or a plumber who is using the tool multiple times per day, this is definitely not the tool for you! Almost everything from power tools to garden hoses come in different levels for different uses from light duty to heavy duty. I get that this tool is not good for you, but it might be good for a lot of people.

    You speak about tightening the scissor-spring screw and then complain that it doesnt move properly. Maybe its over-tightened? A drop of oil helps too. That said, my Wingman is just fine, I use it frequently. No issues. I also have a Rebar. And. A Juice. And a Micra and a Squirt..... the Wingman cost about the same as I (over)paid for the Squirt which I think is junk. I agree 100% about the can opener. Enough already!

    Good video! The scissors are an abomination. At $25 Canadian (price when i bought it) it was a 'just ok' tool. Now its 2X that price, so hard pass. Victorinox (but not the spirit model) is the only company that does scissors right. Charge and Wave scissors are better than the Wingman but nowhere near as good as SAK scissors. For me pliers, scissors, knife, canopener are the key parts of a multitool. Next would be saw and bit driver. I actually use the canopener daily. haven't used a bottle opener in 10 years though! I even use the corkscrew on my SAK more than the bottleopener! Lol!

    Wave, charge, surge, victorinox swisstool etc come loose in the pivot after 100 hard wire cutting.

    To you, me or anyone who has had a leatherman or other multi from higher up the food chain the Wingman or Sidekick is a POS. But this is aimed at the type of people who usually buy those multi's you see at the checkout at Supercheap going for $7. Compared to those, they're awesome. Regardless, I couldn't get myself to buy a Wingman even when they were going for $30 on sale at Bunnings. There's something about them that just makes me think cheap in a bad way (for leatherman), and that file and 2D fixed phillips screwdriver just makes me sad.
