Larry Norman was my guitar teacher for over two years. He taught me this song when he wrote it before they recorded it. Loved this song when it came out. He was a very good teacher and a nice guy. I saw him at a Creation Music Festival at The Gorge in Washington about a year or two before he passed away.
I still remember this great song from the Late Spring/Summer of 1968 when I was 12. What set it apart was the guitar and the repetition of the words ‘I Love You’. Listening to this now I feel like I’m back in that time with all its memories both good and bad…
I used to live across the street from these guys when i was in junior high school in San Jose. Used to watch them practice in the garage. They were our neighborhood rock stars. What a thrill to hear this again after so many years. Brought back great memories of those happy times so long ago.

The definitive version of this song. Eclipses all others with one of the most urgent guitar hooks ever. The vocals have a presence and clarity of the highest magnitude. Listen to great music all day. The guitar riff from this one will be the last song wafting through your brain at the end of the day. That crazy Hammond organ solo adds the energy of a hungry tiger to the mix. Can't miss with this one!
What a song that could symbolize the late 60's. I was 8 at the time, but I was happy to see American society still very sociable. The balance of the instruments is perfect, and creates a romantic nostalgia.
That was exactly what happened to me today, August 10, 2024. It just dropped into my head, man. I haven’t heard that in forever. A great song and got lots of air play
I was 14 years old when this song came out and I listened to it for hours and hours on the 45 rpm disc I love this song forever its the greatest love song ever forever I grew up in evergreen park illinois
......This has to qualify as one of the most unknown unplayed 60's gems . i've been collecting records since the very early 60's and have never come across this album second hand at garage sales etc. But i still remember every note and word.........thanks
I ran into Gene Mason playing in a country band in Salt lake city. When I found out that he was in "People" I said I know it's not country but you should play this song. the next weekend the country band was playing this song. Thank you Gene Mason
In Montreal, just as my first year of high school was about to end, "I Love You" was #1 on the radio charts in June and July of '68 and has always been one of my all-time favourites ever since.
Owow, loved this song❣️Hearing it again made me think of the starry-eyed, hope-filled young girl of 17 I was then…now I’m 70, and find, though the ‘stars’ have dimmed a bit because of the things life throws at you(we all have a story), I still feel quite hopeful❣️Great reminder. I’m not so bad off afterall😁🕊
My father asked me to download this for him off Napster back in 2001. At the time I was pining for my crush who had graduated and now I associate this song with her.
I remember visiting an aunt and uncle out of town and my cousin and I cruising the summer night in his convertible with this song blasting on the radio. That's what these songs are for...to draw up good memories out of the past...that's what they do.
one thing i really love about this old stuff is they werent afraid to have an excellent keyboardist. Organ are an excellent example here. Such freedom with music!
I was 15 when the song was playing on the radio. I could play it on the guitar, I thought I was groovy. I was playing the guitar tonight and I somehow started playing this song. Had to find it. First time I've heard it in 45 years or so. Man I'm getting old, but thanks for posting.
woodcutterdude Yeah, we're getting old man. I was 16 when this came out and I hadn't heard it in at least probably 20 years. I just heard it twice today on TV as the background music for a strange new 'Got Milk?' commercial and I had to find it. ua-cam.com/video/zDxQC9X2CKo/v-deo.html The milk ad music is the original recording played a little faster and chopped up. You can tell by the piano solo instead of the People's version with the organ. The song was originally written and recorded by The Zombies - ua-cam.com/video/o6c1k_26T3k/v-deo.html but the People version is longer and the vocals are better. I found many versions of the song by both bands and I was surprised to find a concert video from about 5 years ago of The Zombies and they do the People's cover version of their song in concert!! I have the People album in my vinyl collection and I'm gonna have to dig this out now.
A great song for those of us who remember. Yet for some reason it just popped into my head. I thought I would check it out. The guitar is so good especially the begining. But it's the memories it brings and whatever the hell made me think of it after more than 20 years that make it so special.
I remember this song so well. I was only 6 or 7 years old when it came out but my older brothers played this song and many other great hits from the 60s. This brings back so many memories of the summertime fun we had in the 60s and 70s.
I loved this song in the late 60's and I still love it and sing it today. My 2 year old grandson sits on my knee and lets me sing to him. Very delightful.
Found this in my cousin’s box of old 45s he gave to me - listening to this 45 on a stereo record player was amazing - I played it multiple times and now on pandora in the car…
First time I've heard this since the 1960s. It's never left my memory though, something about this song's haunting chorus makes it unforgettable. Thanks for posting this!
OMG the MEMORIES!!!!! This song takes me back to that time quicker than most any of the others from that era. Love this song. I never heard the Zombie's version..this was the one I always heard on the radio.
Its 2022, March 5. My great niece Adyson is 11years young today! When she was an infant I would sing this song to her! I was 11 when it came out! I'm 64 a d still love the words to this song!
I bought a 45 rpm of this record as a teen, when it first came out. I loved it. I had a garage sale, and this beautiful neighbor asked me to play it over and over. I moved to Hawaii as an adult, and a DJ on the radio was taking requests for forgotten classics. He played this, and then threw it out the window (you could hear a crash -- I guess a sound effect.) I thought, what an idiot!
I listened to this albums so many times as a kid. This band performed at my brother's high school prom. He said they played this song multiple times. I guess they didn't have a huge repertoire.
My band in high school played this song when it came out. Years later, I discovered Larry Norman’s great, great album “In Another Land.” Larry, the blond guy in People, went on to become an early Contemporary Christian music artist. A friend of mine did sound for a concert of his in the late 80’s and told me, “Larry Norman is without question, the strangest human being I have ever met.”
I have unforgettable memories of this song while living in San Diego CA. Bravo !!!! this Rock group is from my home town San Jose California where I was born. Aauuuh! the nostalgia is killing me.
Thanks for sharing this! Very interesting! I grew up in San Jose and used to listen to KLIV in San Jose and KYA and KFRC in San Francisco. The Syndicate of Sound and Count Five were also from San Jose but my favorite group was the SOS! People's hit song naturally got alot of airplay here but it was never a favorite of mine. But glad it did very well on the charts. (Local radio today is dominated by Spanish and Asian stations and the golden days of local radio are gone forever. VERY sad!!)
This song has been in my head all day. So on my way to work this morning. I seen a very Beautiful person walking and smiled waved and this song started to sing in my mind. It has been over 35 years sense the last time i have listed to this song, just out of Nowhere and that is why I'm here. BTW Thank you very much with all of my Heart for posting this Great Song..
I've been listening to the Zombie's version for years... never knew that it was actually made into a hit by People. I can see why the People version was a bigger success... the production is great on this. But what a shame that the Zombies couldn't get it to chart. Zombies was without a doubt the most underrated band of all time. Geniuses that were as good as the Beatles or the Beach Boys, but somehow didn't prove it to the masses until it was already too late.
al hamble idk why they~ Zombies and The Hollies shared the same fate of being underrated forever. Both are right uo there with Beatles, Beach Boys and even more
!968 and I was 12 years old when I first heard this song on the radio. Just so happened, that it was this year when I also got hit by Cupid at the same time. Yes, this song reminds me of my very first crush for a girl as a kid and after all these years, the fund memories linger on. Thanks for posting this song that bring such wonderful memories from back then.
my parents bought myself and my 2 older brothers am transistor radios for Christmas back in 67 when I was 10.......the days of rocking to only am radio stations......
Saw these guys when I was about 15 at the local skating rink. They put on a fantastic show. I mean they rocked out. This song was by far the mellowest song they played that night.
Grew up half chicago and Los Angeles. Went looking for this song today, I used to listen to this all the time when I was a teen. I have no idea how I even found this song as a kid , born in 67 - must have been on radio then still? great song
I just found this song and i love it. here are the lyrics I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do but the words won't come And I don't know what to say I should tell you I love you, I do The words should explain but the words won't come I shouldn't hide my love deep inside The words should explain but the words won't come I should tell you just how I feel and I keep try-y-y-in' But something holds me back when I try to tell you I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do-o-o I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do but the words won't come And I don't know what to say I shouldn't hide my love deep inside The words should explain but the words won't come If you could see what you mean to me The words should explain but the words won't come And oh, how hard I try to tell you I lo-o-ove you But something holds me back when I try to tell you I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do-o-o I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do but the words won't come And I don't know what to say, yeah! I should tell you I love you, I do The words should explain but the words won't come I shouldn't hide my love deep inside The words should explain but the words won't come And oh, how hard I try to tell you I lo-o-ove you But something holds me back when I try to tell you I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do-o-o I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do but the words won't come And I don't know what to say I love you
In 1975 when I was 12 and at a friend's house, she played an obscure record that I had never heard before. Her older sister made fun of the song because the lyrics weren't very....original, I guess. That strange song got stuck in my head all those years and I never knew who sang it, but I never forgot its repetitious tune. This was the song.
This group played at our family's amusement park in the late 60's (HANSONS PARK, HARVEYS LAKE, PA ) Great bunch of guys - they stayed the whole weekend water sking with me & friends - WHAT A GREAT TIME & MEMORIY - Dan Hanson
DAMN! I LOVED Hansons Park!! Used to go there during my teen years with any and every girl I could take... saw SO many shows/concerts!! This was '65-'75. Forgot all about it til I read your post! Lived in Mountaintop, PA, Dan! Great times!! Great place!!
This is beautiful if I ever heard it which I have in a while but beautiful threw and threw a gem to treasure forever. Stay gold everybody peace and much love out there.
My mom was 18 years old when this came out and living in Miami, Florida. She and her best friend would go dancing on the weekends at this place in North Miami where a lot of high school kids would go to dance and it was called, "THE PLACE." She said this song was played often along with I'm So Glad by Deep Purple. That time period (1964 -- 1974) had some really great music!
I believe I was 14 or 15 when I saw this band live in some little building in San Jose, California. Maybe it was a school gym....my memory won't quite kick in. The room was small and all the overhead lights were on. My friend and I were sitting cross-legged on the floor - right in front- when the guys in the band came in and sort of "milled about" before starting the show. I remember feeling like I was a part of one of THE greatest experiences EVER, LOL. Those were the days, my friend......
J.....wow...thank you for your story....I always remember this song...listening to it on my AM radio when I was 11......this song should be rated higher than it was....Billboard rated it as #53 for the year 1968....shows you how good the music was back then....Hey Jude was #1 for the year, Jumping Jack Flash was #50, Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay was #4 and #97 was Suzie Q by CCR.
I was eight years old when this song came out. I had an older sister and brother that turned me on to the cool music of the Sixties. This song was one of them. I remember seeing this band on American Bandstand perform this very song. The B-side to "I Love You" was another great song, "Somebody Tell Me My Name".
Que tempo bom era uma banda melhor que a outra Quem viveu essa época sabe Eih saudades Estudando no colégio Anchieta SBC acabado de comprar uma calça Lee
No shame Frank. Even the best of us long for that youth and what time does to steal it. Yet we have great times and music to bring us back, at least in our head. my birth certificate doesn't match the age when I listen to the great music of the past. Part of a generation that will live on through the music greats.
dude having feelings and because you cry doesnt make you a wimp it makes you human i just lost a friend of over 40 yrs and at the funeral i broke down its called human
Coolest band around in the 60's and early 70's. They traveled with the Who and played many, many gigs in the Los Angeles area to a full, packed crowd that adored them. So glad they got back together for the 2007 appearance.
I still have all my vinal collection. And now music is being made on it again. There have actually been some ' Record' stores opening. The return of turntabes. Still have 2 of mine. Saw a band on late night releasing their new single on 45 rpm only. How cool is that 😀🤗
It is good but it sounds almost the same as The Zombies, The Zombies didn't produce it like it was a hit single, they should have, it was the flip side of one of their singles.
Dan, the other Dan and I requested this so many times on KPAM-FM in Portland, Oregon that the DJ said we were creating an ASCAP problem. This was 1970. Surprised that I still know all the lyrics!
+Frank Hernandez Yeah, I remember hearing this on a transistor radio while riding on a school bus......some kind of Jr. High Band trip....I always did like this tune. Later on, when Larry came out with "Only visiting this Planet" I saw him live my freshman year in college....
Larry Norman was my guitar teacher for over two years. He taught me this song when he wrote it before they recorded it. Loved this song when it came out. He was a very good teacher and a nice guy. I saw him at a Creation Music Festival at The Gorge in Washington about a year or two before he passed away.
Wow what a great story. I met him when he came to Geelong. I've always been a massive Larry fan. Thanks for sharing this great story.
Thanks. Slight correction… I think the Zombies wrote I Love You, but People got a hit with it. Top 20 I think, but not a Top 10 hit.
À original é The Zombies
love this song
The song was written by Zombies bassist Chris White and their version came out 2 years earlier. This version was a cover.

This is so beautifully psychedelic--oddly enough, my father who grew up on sixties music has never heard of this one.
I grew up on 60s music, and it was vaguely familiar when I heard it on the radio a week ago. I thought it was The Zombies. Very much in their style.
@67psych32 , that explains everything.
@67psych32 It was a 'B' side for the Zombies in 65'
People made it a ""A" side in 68' and a "Hit"......
It was big in San Jose- where The People originated.
I grew up the same music on the oldies station and heard this song occasionally but not as often as a lot of other songs.

It has been over 35 years sense the last time i have listed to this song, just out of Nowhere and that is why I'm here. BTW Thank you very much with all of my Heart for posting this Great Song..
What a brilliant bit of songwriting! I just came over here after listening to Geoff Levin on Leah Remini's podcast.
Chris White from the Zombies wrote this one. The Zombies version is also fantastic
@@VirreFriberg I can't agree on the Zombies' version - except for Rod Argent's keyboard solo.
I've been listening to the Zombie's version for years... never knew that it was actually made into a hit by People. I can see why the People version was a bigger success... the production is great on this. But what a shame that the Zombies couldn't get it to chart. Zombies was without a doubt the most underrated band of all time. Geniuses that were as good as the Beatles or the Beach Boys, but somehow didn't prove it to the masses until it was already too late.
to me Zombies beats Beatles, and beach boys...
Zombies were truly unique, but I wouldn't elevate them that highly.
I like both but think Zombie vocal is better. Think the Z version played most in CA , think they dod OK :>}
al hamble idk why they~ Zombies and The Hollies shared the same fate of being underrated forever. Both are right uo there with Beatles, Beach Boys and even more
Please, don't compare anybody to the Beatles.
Had this 45.. it was also the first tune I heard on my brand new transistor radio.. Great upload... Bless !
my parents bought myself and my 2 older brothers am transistor radios for Christmas back in 67 when I was 10.......the days of rocking to only am radio stations......
I grew up in Fremont, Calif...the rest is history! I know the bay area bands well. Hi CCR! (:
This was one of the 45's my dad gave me when i got my first real record player. Thanks for posting.
Saw these guys when I was about 15 at the local skating rink. They put on a fantastic show. I mean they rocked out. This song was by far the mellowest song they played that night.
Did they play the in. tro?most radio sta. did not.
@@richardmetzler5328 Yes they did. Our local radio station played the long version with the intro also.
Im too young to have any nostalgia from when this song came out, but damn was it a big part of growing up for me.
Great song and great lyrics! Love this song back in the day. Fredo Rodriguez WFH 1970 !
This song reminds me when I had just come to US, fantastic song.
Grew up half chicago and Los Angeles. Went looking for this song today, I used to listen to this all the time when I was a teen. I have no idea how I even found this song as a kid , born in 67 - must have been on radio then still? great song
thank you algorithm for bringing this back to me. so long ago.😢
I just found this song and i love it. here are the lyrics
I love you, I love you, I love you
Yes I do but the words won't come
And I don't know what to say
I should tell you I love you, I do
The words should explain but the words won't come
I shouldn't hide my love deep inside
The words should explain but the words won't come
I should tell you just how I feel and I keep try-y-y-in'
But something holds me back when I try to tell you
I love you, I love you, I love you
Yes I do-o-o
I love you, I love you, I love you
Yes I do but the words won't come
And I don't know what to say
I shouldn't hide my love deep inside
The words should explain but the words won't come
If you could see what you mean to me
The words should explain but the words won't come
And oh, how hard I try to tell you I lo-o-ove you
But something holds me back when I try to tell you
I love you, I love you, I love you
Yes I do-o-o
I love you, I love you, I love you
Yes I do but the words won't come
And I don't know what to say, yeah!
I should tell you I love you, I do
The words should explain but the words won't come
I shouldn't hide my love deep inside
The words should explain but the words won't come
And oh, how hard I try to tell you I lo-o-ove you
But something holds me back when I try to tell you
I love you, I love you, I love you
Yes I do-o-o
I love you, I love you, I love you
Yes I do but the words won't come
And I don't know what to say
I love you
Enzo, thank you for the lyrics, 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
¡Me encanta!
Marzo del 2022, ¡Gracias Enzo! Tenía como 35 años sin escucharla!
Muchas gracias por compartir recordar es vivir ...
this was never on the radio in my area but i had a superhits album with this on it;
and this tune grabbed me.
I was 17 and in love when this came out. It was always a favorite
Con estas melodías y otras comencé a tocar guitarra.
Tenía 12 años y aún las sigo disfrutando 👍
Was a Junior going on Senior in High School. Listened to this while cruising in my 56 chevy belair,
i was in my 64 chevy ss still love it
OMG this is the group I was looking for?I really love this song by People I didn't remember the name of this guys Classic song my opinion 💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
I don't remember a guitar player of my generation not learning this song. We all did it. Fantastic.
The song I LOVE YOU BY THE PEOPLE BRING BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES FROM THE SUMMER OF 68 THAT WAS REALLY A GREAT SONG LOVE IT
I like this song by this great group People 🦋🥀🦋🥀🦋 I like the words and the sounds of the instruments 🌻🌷🌹💋🦋👍🦋
I spent 1 week with this group at Hanson's Park, Harveys Lake, pa - got lots of pictures - went water sking and spent days togeather - Dan Hanson
Flash...Back...* Wow... When Love was Innocent-ish. Thank you for the memories.
This group played at our family's amusement park in the late 60's (HANSONS PARK, HARVEYS LAKE, PA ) Great bunch of guys - they stayed the whole weekend water sking with me & friends - WHAT A GREAT TIME & MEMORIY - Dan Hanson
daniel hanson Very cool 😎💜👍🏼
DAMN! I LOVED Hansons Park!! Used to go there during my teen years with any and every girl I could take... saw SO many shows/concerts!! This was '65-'75. Forgot all about it til
I read your post!
I'm So Glad was by the band CREAM.
Those were the days, my friend......
they were great live
J.....wow...thank you for your story....I always remember this song...listening to it on my AM radio when I was 11......this song should be rated higher than it was....Billboard rated it as #53 for the year 1968....shows you how good the music was back then....Hey Jude was #1 for the year, Jumping Jack Flash was #50, Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay was #4 and #97 was Suzie Q by CCR.
@@rickflood8360 How do you know the ratings for all that music? That's impressive! :-)
@@jburdick8611 J....I used to listen to the top 100 songs every year on a New York radio station called WABC...
Do you love the 60s?
I was eight years old when this song came out. I had an older sister and brother that turned me on to the cool music of the Sixties. This song was one of them. I remember seeing this band on American Bandstand perform this very song. The B-side to "I Love You" was another great song, "Somebody Tell Me My Name".
Yes! I listened to that one as much as the A side.
Que tempo bom era uma banda melhor que a outra
Quem viveu essa época sabe
Eih saudades
Estudando no colégio Anchieta SBC acabado de comprar uma calça Lee
Just popped to say that I'm loving your music selection and your video working!
I remember this one hit wonder from 68 when things were groovy! They were really quite good!
I remember this song back in Aug 1968 in my 1963 Ford Fairlaine with my then girlfriend. A time I will never forget as long as I live!
George Smith l listened in my 58 Ford cruising nw Oregon
Just heard this for the first time the other day on SirusXM and tried to find it in Itunes, but it wasn't there. But found it on UA-cam, great song.
i am listening and i am crying i was young once its how wimpie i am
It sucks doesn't it. All for nothing. Country going into a toilet fast.
No shame Frank. Even the best of us long for that youth and what time does to steal it. Yet we have great times and music to bring us back, at least in our head. my birth certificate doesn't match the age when I listen to the great music of the past. Part of a generation that will live on through the music greats.
It's nostalgia, not wimpiness! A warm heart is nostalgic!
dude having feelings and because you cry doesnt make you a wimp it makes you human i just lost a friend of over 40 yrs and at the funeral i broke down its called human
because you got a huge heart!.....yeaaaaaaaaaa....
Love this song heard it on radio on my way home..Oh my Gosh I loved this song way back when
Coolest band around in the 60's and early 70's. They traveled with the Who and played many, many gigs in the Los Angeles area to a full, packed crowd that adored them. So glad they got back together for the 2007 appearance.
Did Larry Norman play then or was he too I'll?
I remember them playing at our High school in Mission San Jose. I Loved them!
Geoff at Moyer Bros Music on Stevens Creek was teaching my buddy Chris the bass.
Remember this psychedelic song from the 60s! It's a good one! I know the feeling of those words!
I still have all my vinal collection. And now music is being made on it again. There have actually been some ' Record' stores opening. The return of turntabes. Still have 2 of mine. Saw a band on late night releasing their new single on 45 rpm only. How cool is that 😀🤗
Loved it at 9 and still do!
I love this song from the teenage years in the 1960's
2019 and still a great song. This version was better than the Zombies.
It is good but it sounds almost the same as The Zombies, The Zombies didn't produce it like it was a hit single, they should have, it was the flip side of one of their singles.
Agreed. A little more straightforward with better lead vocals. The Zombies original had a torrid Argent solo!
Excellent organ solo as well.
Dan, the other Dan and I requested this so many times on KPAM-FM in Portland, Oregon that the DJ said we were creating an ASCAP problem. This was 1970. Surprised that I still know all the lyrics!
People this song bring great memories since i was a little boy iwas in sixth grade in1967 i am 61 so you can imagine
+Frank Hernandez Yeah, I remember hearing this on a transistor radio while riding on a school bus......some kind of Jr. High Band trip....I always did like this tune. Later on, when Larry came out with "Only visiting this Planet" I saw him live my freshman year in college....
+Frank Hernandez I thought sixth graders were about 11 years old. If you're 61 you were born around 1954. Were you 13 in the sixth grade?
+thegonz9 lol
I will never ever forget this song. I love it. What a time what a ride.❣❣❣❣
This one hit # 1 in Springfield, MA, and at first, a lot of people thought it was a new hit by the Zombies
That makes sense. Very Zombiesque. That electric organ bridge solo sure sounds like Rod Argent.
