Lol I think anyone who played this game back in the day had that helicopter taking off scene permanently burnt into their brain due to how easy it was to die.
yazoo178 yep I don't remember anything passed the first couple of minutes of the first level. I think I had Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles and this game. I don't remember having any others which is a shame.
The first 16-bit game I ever had, for Christmas '91 (you can probably guess why I wanted a Sega). My only impression of it as a kid was "barely-sensical chaos". It seems no better almost 30 years later. Also level 2 was less a difficulty curve and more of a difficulty cliff.
I just managed to beat this game on Easy with 7 lives. Even on the easiest settings this feels like one of my proudest gaming achievements, and I have plenty of them! I also quite enjoyed this game, I'll give it 3.5/5
Reminds me of the 1989 Night Striker arcade game (which came out a year later after this game) but with the car replaced with the Blue Thunder helicopter.
It isn't that impressive when the highest framerate this appears to be is 20 FPS and that the audio is a poor representation of the original game, despite literally using FM on the arcade game. Space Harrier 2 is also a launch game and it shits on this game in every conceivable aspect.
In musical question, the arcade soundchip is more advanced than the Sega Genesis one, and is for wait for a launch game to have that type of instruments module for a new console system (in that time)
Gotta give it to the older games - two hours of some of the most brutal and difficult gaming to get at ending that says "The End" - no congratulations, no praise, just the cold hard reality that there is nothing more.
I too never forgot this game when playing on the SEGA console. And looking back at the “Blue Thunder” movie this would have been the *wet dream* of Project T.H.O.R.
It's amazing to see what the games looked like at the start of the Genesis's life and what they'd look like by the end with games like Vectorman and Comix Zone
Ahh so many memories are coming back. I remember being soo impressed by thr graphical difference from the Genesis versus the Master System. This game was just too hard though!
I enjoyed Thunder Blade on the mega drive as a kid back in the days I know it’s not great as the Arcade but it was the early days of the mega drive consoles life
This was an early Megadrive game. Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage I and II, Thunderforce III and IV, Herzog Zwei, Devil Crash, Gynoug, Alicia Dragoon, Sonic the Hedgehog, Steel Empire, and many others show what the MD/Genesis could do when used properly. Generally, Japanese Megadrive games had great music, US Genesis games had godawful music (that awful drum sound).
THIS SEGA'S BEST VIDEO GAME THEY EVER MADE!!!!! NOTHING CAN BEAT THIS GAME'S PERFECTION!!!!! THIS IS THE SEGA GENESIS'S FIRST EVER VIDEO GAME!!!!! EVERYBODY LOVES THIS GAME!!!!!
Imagine going back 20 years.. Looking at the box-art and the screens on the back.. You are thinking "seams like a cool chopper-game".. And then you turn it on and.... *BLRCHHH WIOOWWW CHHFZZZCHHWiooW*... This game is probably best muted -.-
This one was one of old collection favourites. In some strange cases , I rather the Genesis\Megadrive version over the arcade , it happens me with this one and Shadow Dancer.
Job interviewer: Tell me about a time you had to deal with a very anxious situation. Me: *sweats nervously as I remember stage 2 of Super Thunder Blade*
I’m watching this realizing that thunder blade in its arcade form could have been ported better than this it has both styles of gameplay too, so far, the first part of the first level in the arcade is missing here, also you are not able to stop and hover and shoot, instead it uses the scrolling technique from space harrier, colors are more bright, far fewer buildings and less life than the arcade It’s not a bad port, it’s just an example of watered down, maybe a little rushed, I think the Genesis could have pulled off a closer faithful port to the original source
What trouble I had to finish this game, it was torture, my left thumb hurt from pressing hard on the directional pad. But what a pleasure to have succeeded! When I was a child I didn't go far.
Man those boss fights... I know you can also slow down and speed up but it felt mostly like strafing left and right while hoping not to get hit most of the time.
Super Thunderblade is legendary with Spectacular graphics and STUNNING gameplay With ABSOLUTELY AWESOME graphics and STUNNING gameplay The levels are excellent and Furious with STUNNING Boss battles This is a classic chopper game with a vengeance 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
anybody remembers a cassette that included 3 in 1 including this game ? when i was a child ı sed to play 2 other games which were other fighter plane games. they were so good as well. just don't recall the names of them.
I played this game on the genesis collection that came out and can’t make it past the first level. I thought it was my ps4, but then I had purchased an 2nd gen genesis /w an everdrive and I still sucked at it.
The Master System version is better and it’s only a year older. Space Harrier II and Thunder Blade were the first games released on the Megadrive in 1989. They didn’t know how to utilise the technology at the time and it was rushed.
it's literally one of the very first 2 games released for the original Japanese Mega Drive in 1988, along with Space Harrier II. It's going to be like an early game for a platform because it is :P
Replayed this tonight and during the final boss fight I figured out you can stop by pressing B. 😂 Would've made stage 2 much easier.. But hey, at least I did it the badass way, haha. Btw, this game ain't rubbish, you just gotta keep on moving all the time, and that's pretty cool actually! But yeah, music sucks. Muted my game and put on some heavy metal, that was an awesome experience, stage 4 especially. Not the best game ever, but it's on my "all time favorites" list for sure!
this originally came out in 1988 for the Japanese Mega Drive release. Genesis was 1989 and European Mega Drive was 1990, but was a launch title for all three.
You’re pretty lucky to beat this game at ALL. Much less in just over 20 minutes. As for me, the farthest I ever got was the beginning of stage 2 before giving up. I think it’s safe for me to say this is the worst Sega Genesis game I’ve ever played.
This and Space Harrier 2 were kind of your only options when the Mega Drive released in Japan... probably not the best two titles to launch your system with.
I don't remember having any others which is a shame.
lol yup this game was tough
I play the game in a arcade place who has the seat and controls as helicopter.. very sensitive... was awesome to play even if die was easy...
And the first boss music because thats about as far as I could make it at 4 years old lol
Man that second stage always kicked my ass. Awesome game
This is one of my first game at Sega.
So many memories about childhood...
This game was so hard when i played this as kid.
This game was mega hard. Still can't beat it 22 years on...
Mega Drive.... great memories from my childhood... long live the '90s
I liked the little happy panda face when you enter your name in at the end of the level. Takes me back to 1991 .
Sound opinions for this game
1988: Yeah, radical!
Present: R.I.P. Headphone Users... (not really)
Actually I do agree on that present thing. Stage 2 and 3's themes are the worst.
13:03
This was probably the most stressful SG game I’ve ever played. The first stage music is unforgettable.
why does everyone hate this game, its not that bad, i think its awsome
Because they saw the Arcade version that's why. I like this as a kid but felt the control was way too sluggish...
wait theres an arcade versiom
i thought the arcade was just thunder blade not SUPER thunder blade
i thought the music in super thunder blades an imporovmnent over the arcade versio
yuji naka? didnt he make phantasy star?
I just managed to beat this game on Easy with 7 lives. Even on the easiest settings this feels like one of my proudest gaming achievements, and I have plenty of them! I also quite enjoyed this game, I'll give it 3.5/5
Nicely done! I love this game! Not arcade-perfect, but still really fun if you're a Thunder Blade fan.
Reminds me of the 1989 Night Striker arcade game (which came out a year later after this game) but with the car replaced with the Blue Thunder helicopter.
always loved the noise the level one mid boss makes when it fires the main cannon
Same same same^^ my inner child is now satisfied.
This game's subtitle should be "Attack of the 8-frame jpegs"
Back in day, this was a high impressive game... even F-Zero didn't exist
It isn't that impressive when the highest framerate this appears to be is 20 FPS and that the audio is a poor representation of the original game, despite literally using FM on the arcade game. Space Harrier 2 is also a launch game and it shits on this game in every conceivable aspect.
Think about it was the unique form to play an arcade game in your home, in 1988
In musical question, the arcade soundchip is more advanced than the Sega Genesis one, and is for wait for a launch game to have that type of instruments module for a new console system (in that time)
🤣🤣🤣
Gotta give it to the older games - two hours of some of the most brutal and difficult gaming to get at ending that says "The End" - no congratulations, no praise, just the cold hard reality that there is nothing more.
My god, ive just found out that you can brake by pressing b. If only i knew that as a kid xD
About 20 years later, I still can't beat level two!
Same here!!!
It seems almost unplayable every time I try. My advice is: shun this rubbish and play Space Harrier instead.
TheEagleofSteel Touchè
Cmon man i managed to finish it when i was like 11
yup, same here.
I too never forgot this game when playing on the SEGA console. And looking back at the “Blue Thunder” movie this would have been the *wet dream* of Project T.H.O.R.
I just discovered that movie earlier this year.
Remember when I dad brought this home in 88-89. We went freakin nuts
This and Space Harrier II were the first two games to be released with the console in late '88.
in Japan yes, the Genesis was 1989 and the European Mega Drive was 1990 but this was in the launch lineup for all three.
I enjoyed Thunder Blade on the mega drive as a kid back in the days I know it’s not great as the Arcade but it was the early days of the mega drive consoles life
The soundtrack is amazing.
Very hard game.
siempre llegue hasta el nivel 4.. estaba a punto de llegar al final,, muy buen video .. desde encarnacion paraguay saludos..
This was an early Megadrive game. This games only gives ear pain
This is one of my fav retro games!
Genesis Longplay is awesome!
That tank mini boss turret sound ...fucking cool
THIS SEGA'S BEST VIDEO GAME THEY EVER MADE!!!!! NOTHING CAN BEAT THIS GAME'S PERFECTION!!!!! THIS IS THE SEGA GENESIS'S FIRST EVER VIDEO GAME!!!!! EVERYBODY LOVES THIS GAME!!!!!
Sincerity or sarcasm?
@@kikayei zawkazm
Always adored the music in this game. To this day I hum it when I poop!
Imagine going back 20 years.. Looking at the box-art and the screens on the back.. You are thinking "seams like a cool chopper-game".. And then you turn it on and.... *BLRCHHH WIOOWWW CHHFZZZCHHWiooW*... This game is probably best muted -.-
Music is very close to the coin-op.... but yes the sound effects are pretty rubbish lol
No need to imagine
This one was one of old collection favourites. In some strange cases , I rather the Genesis\Megadrive version over the arcade , it happens me with this one and Shadow Dancer.
Job interviewer: Tell me about a time you had to deal with a very anxious situation. Me: *sweats nervously as I remember stage 2 of Super Thunder Blade*
1988 person : WOW!! This graphics is really good!
2021 person : *swears*
I like the way cloud moves as you steering
They turned of the player hit detection on this playthrough?
This game ok, but it is rock hard! ;-)
I beat that game without any cheats when i was 9 years old.
Blue Thunder VS Robotech Bioroids 15:47

Some funky ass bass being laid in the Level 1 song...
This game os amazing to play.
He was of the first wave of games the genesis avaliable to play.
I like this game style
I was born on 1988...i have play this game last time
Miss this game so much
That explosion sound is burned into my psyche.
What trouble I had to finish this game, it was torture, my left thumb hurt from pressing hard on the directional pad. But what a pleasure to have succeeded! When I was a child I didn't go far.
Thanks for the memories!
The only sega gane I had that I could never beat back then lol
Man those boss fights...
I know you can also slow down and speed up but it felt mostly like strafing left and right while hoping not to get hit most of the time.
This was the first game that caused me to throw my controller against the wall. Ahhh the memories.
I dont think I ever beat this but I'm sure I got to the second half of Stage 4 back in the day.
The pipes still give me PTSD lol.
Suspense part 0:27 to 0:44 and the adventure begins!!
I loved this game as a kid! looks super Jank now though. Yet another game from my childhood with sick prog like music!
Nowhere near as good as the arcade
Wow ..Great gaming! Never beat this one..But would try for hours.
9 year's later..here again 😎
And did you beat it yet?
I had this game with Mega Games 3 along with Super Monaco Grand Prix and Alien Storm. Anyone else?
I found it!!!
Been looking for this game for years!
Me too
About 50 Genesis games got ported to the PS4 Xbox 1 and switch and super thunder ⛈️⚡ blade was just 1 of them
The cave's entrance on level 3 are deceptive: they get SMALLER as you get closer!
Its Blue Thunder.
Super Thunderblade is legendary with Spectacular graphics and STUNNING gameplay
With ABSOLUTELY AWESOME graphics and STUNNING gameplay
The levels are excellent and Furious with STUNNING Boss battles
This is a classic chopper game with a vengeance 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
In arcades yes, but Sega botched the home port.
anybody remembers a cassette that included 3 in 1 including this game ? when i was a child ı sed to play 2 other games which were other fighter plane games. they were so good as well. just don't recall the names of them.
I remember my cartridge had something wrong with it and the music would play strange throughout.
I have many happy memories of playing this with the joystick and my father in the attic, one i will finally complete it 😂
Directed by
Bros 400 1929
...Even the credits are confusing as hell.
Good Times 😌
Gab's das Mal als Automatenversion? Mit Sitz und richtigem Steuerknüppel . Und der Sitz bewegte sich auch mit.?
I could barely pass the first level as a kid. Games was too damn hard.
Beautiful game 🎮 then and now
I love this game!
I know one thing it's very difficult
20:51 Beautiful music.
This is the first game of mega drive
Oh those days !!!!! I miss the various farting sounds of this game. Truly a game of its time..... ;-)
I played this game on the genesis collection that came out and can’t make it past the first level. I thought it was my ps4, but then I had purchased an 2nd gen genesis /w an everdrive and I still sucked at it.

Maioria dos jogos do mega eu não conseguia zerar Kkkk jogava todos os dias.
Those were the days eh?
The hardest video game ever!!!
Beautiful music.
What an ending
This game looks like some test program or something
it's literally one of the very first 2 games released for the original Japanese Mega Drive in 1988, along with Space Harrier II. It's going to be like an early game for a platform because it is :P

That was the idea & the title page is a screen grab of said film...
i also like the fact that the bad guys' tanks and helicopters are Russian equipment. :D
Mi segundo sistema fue un SEGA génesis 16bit y tenia thunder Blade me encantaría volverlo a tener
Mi primer sistema fue un sega master
Mil Mi-35?
Stage 2 was a real ass, but I blame it on the poor collision detection.
Not a bad game but incredibly dull.... obviously rushed for genesis release.
this originally came out in 1988 for the Japanese Mega Drive release. Genesis was 1989 and European Mega Drive was 1990, but was a launch title for all three.
In the third-person levels this copter fly with are speed of the jet plane :)
I only managed to get to level 2 once
game is hard as hell
You’re pretty lucky to beat this game at ALL. Much less in just over 20 minutes. As for me, the farthest I ever got was the beginning of stage 2 before giving up. I think it’s safe for me to say this is the worst Sega Genesis game I’ve ever played.
Un jeu qui date de 88 et qui a terriblement mal vieilli. Quand on voit Last resort de 92 sur Neo Geo à côté qui reste toujours aussi beau.
Et qui est beaucoup trop difficile ce Thunder blade.
This and Space Harrier 2 were kind of your only options when the Mega Drive released in Japan... probably not the best two titles to launch your system with.
Better than Sky Surfers and Fantavision ;-)
Space Harrier 2 was great!
Love the music to this, shame the sound effects are crap!
I loved this
