I think adding to Lee’s anger if it was the coaches’ decision to allow Ayala wrestle: Lee’s sacrificed MUCH for the Iowa TEAM, enduring injuries, forgoing a shot at the Olympics, traveling to Iowa when home state Penn State was heavily recruiting him, etc…. I see putting Ayala in the mat as a serious snub to Lee AND the team and can see why Lee would take it personally on both accounts. Normally a big fan of the Brands brothers but this was a D move.

I agree it seems Iowa has a history of doing this with its wrestlers. Example being Ramos and Gilman when the brands brothers favored the new wrestler Gilman instead of their previous ncaa champ tony Ramos

Spencer gave Gilman more than he wanted in practice, Ayala is really good but not on Spencer’s level.

Drake does not have to MFF in the finals, however this is what’s done unless the starter and the #2 are very close the backup forfeits. Drake was being a bad teammate, he knows he is light years behind Spencer Lee. Iowa was GIFTED tons of PA talent over the last few years and they’ve seemed to completely mismanaged them. Spencer is a FANTASTIC wrestler and a better person.
please list your examples of how Iowa has mismanaged things in the past. I’m sure you know all the details of the given circumstances.

@@Not-the-only-one again I don’t just “spout nonsense” I am have coached wrestling for 21 years, I am both a Varsity coach and I coach Freestyle & Greco. Iowa is by far my favorite college wrestling program. I have personally met Tom & Terry (at a few clinics I don’t know know them) they are FANTASTIC coaches. The issues are not with Tom & Terry, I hope top talent continues to go to Iowa. With Iowa winning in ‘21 abd Michigan in ‘22 we are headed in the right direction. Anything to keep PSU from winning every year is good in my book.

In my opinion this is WAY overblown. Not to long ago it was normal for a wrestler to log a minimum of 30+ matches heading into NCAA’s with or without an injury. Spencer has been quoted as saying the decision to wrestle comes from coaches, doctors, and family but he himself has the last word. This was Spencer’s decision to wrestle. It’s not that big a deal as people are making it.
The 165 pounder from Illinois who won 2 titles, Isaiah Martinez was undefeated as a freshman with over 50 wins. Man up !

We've seen Spencer push off an opponent after a match before. This does not look any different. Less than when after he beat DeSanto their junior year. They are great friends now, after DeSanto beat him the next year. Spencer is the reason DeSanto transferred to Iowa.
If he wanted to forfeit, it might have been because he did not want to embarrass Drake, who everyone knows will take over when Spencer is done. So he went for the 1st period pin rather than tech. I think media is making too much of this.
There was no reason for him o wrestle.He did not need to risk further injury... He's wrestling this year for 1 REASON.... 4 x National Champion....

Spencer wants to wrestle...I get it.....If you want to be safe...totally....don't go out for wrestling. Happy he wrestled full on and Drake would not have wanted it any other way. IMO. Also happy that Barnett is back. He can wrestle anybody at 25 (except Spencer.) 149 and 65 still look to be tough. Crazy tough.
Actually I agree with you because if you’re hurt and it’s not that bad then go out there and finish the tournament but if you’re injured don’t risk it

I totally disagree with this being nothing, the Brands have a history of disrespecting their wrestlers, look at the Daniel Dennis Tony Ramos situation, what about Thomas Gilman defecting to Penn state? And now this?

I think they wanted to see the match. Wouldn't have happened if they didn't want to see it. Why? I have no idea. From what I understand Lee didn't work out with Ayala in practice and maybe they wanted to see how he stacked up in a real match situation with Lee outside of the room. Who knows? I remember last year DeSanto threatened to jack up his teammate Schriever's dad at an open tournament after they wrestled a fairly close match. Seems like there's an interesting dynamic between veterans and young guys at Iowa.

I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt. We don’t know the details of the circumstance and what might of led up to given situation. Dude literally threw a fit because he didn't want to wrestle the final of an open tournament and expected his teammate, who has goals too, to forfeit to him. Mind boggling.
They might meet again in the future, years from now. Spencer is saying "I'm THE MAN". I'm sure Gilman tried to convince Spencer that he was the man.
This was nothing to get excited about. It's Ayalas choice whether to medical forfeit out or wrestle. At the same time he shouldn't expect Spencer to be nice when they wrestle just cuz they're teammates. Especially when this is IOWA we're talking about. Spencer didn't even do anything like Gilman or Desanto does in their matches!!!
I was bummed to see O’toole didn’t wrestle! Scuffle would have been crazy if him and carr wrestled

Midlands was so expensive even living in the area ($160 tickets & $40 parking).
Southern Scuffle at least had some good fights w/ at least 2 TBs, even if the results were "expected".
Both need to get the scoring figured out! So many unnecessary delays and arguments.

If Lee didn’t want to wrestle he shouldn’t have. Why should Ayala forfeit? It’s not like it would count as a loss for Lee anyways. There’s never any consequences for MFFing. If Lee doesn’t want to wrestle then that’s Ayalas title to take home.

What a cluster. Imagine being Ayala at a top tier D1 wrestling school and having your Mom get after people on social media. All this because Mr. "excuses are for wusses" didn't want to wrestle in a final.
I'm sick of it. I feel like nobody wants to wrestle. Mff should count as lose to oponit. # of matches should play part I seeding for ncaa. A 20-5 record should hold more weight than a 10-1 record.

The Brands bone heads could care less about Lee as a person and every other wrestler that wrestles for them they have broken physically and mentally many a great wrestler at that school and will continue to get dominated to Cael and PS because of true love of his kids and proper coaching and leading techniques

If Ayala wins there’s a whole different narrative. The kid should be commended for wanting a shot at Lee. Since they’re teammates he’ll never get the chance under these circumstances again. Sure Lee is the man, but I think everyone knows this saying. To be the man you gotta beat THE MAN. The kid has my respect.
I do understand why Lee is pissed, but a little bit of coaching diplomacy solves this problem.
I had to go check the kids stats to find this out obviously. He’s a 3 time state champ in high school n 4 time finalist. He was 171-3 n high school. Why wouldn’t he want a shot at Lee? If I’m the coach, I wanna see that match under these circumstances also. Not just wrestle offs in the room.
First of all, why should Ayala not want to wrestle? He’s a competitor.
Lee doesn’t want to wrestle, then he should MFF on his own.
But Brands - while accomplished - acts like he does, and elicits this kind of behavior.
So is Richie Fig out for Courtney? I understand why but I honestly think that Figueroa has a higher ceiling than Courtney.

Well he took the high school route you show your the fucking man 0 fucks given one time my coach said whoever wins this match (me and my friend/teammate) wrestles varsity next week cause we were the same weight and it made me mad cause I felt I was deserving so when we wrestled I cranked the wizard/overhook the whole match and after his elbow was swollen( yes this was at a varsity tournament)
At times Lee is prone to ego getting the best of him. Like that time Cardinale wrestled him tough and then Lee discredited him. Great wrestler, hard worker and generally nice guy tho.
I disagree with some of your comments referring to the Lee v Ayala situation.
Wrestlers usually wrestle their teammates when they meet up in a tournament. It’s common for there to be a forfeit but it’s not 9 out of10 like you said. It happens but usually they wrestle.
Second, you said Spencer wrestled and treated Ayala like he was anybody else, just an opponent. But he didn’t. He treated Ayala worse then 99% of his opponents. I’ve never seen Spencer react like that after a match.
I get it that you are probably an Iowa fan and are trying to downplay the situation but those aren’t the facts.

I’m sure Lee isn’t second guessing his decision to wrestle at Iowa after winning 3 titles, and on his way to winning another. I respect great wrestlers no matter what name they have on their singlet.

If you don't want to wrestle all the way through a tournament, don't enter it. Lee could have been injured during any match, if that's what he's worried about.

Lee just lost a fan. I would have expected something like that from Desanto but not Lee. Hard to believe that Desanto grew more than Lee over the past several years.

Truth be known, four years of Brands has to rub off on you. It wasn't as frequent as desanto of course, but every so often you see Spencer get a little spicy. It's just not a good look no matter how good you are. Titles shouldn't make you act enTitled.
