The brilliance of barbenheimer is that it balances masculine and feminine art and introduces the inherent value of both.

@@Vhie05 Hype in what capacity? There has been hype for plenty of films since the pandemic. But the hype for this only feels different because most of the obnoxious nerds who shit on everything else are raising these films up because of their directors.
Who would have thought that a Barbie film would be one of only a few to be flying the flag of practical filmmaking over CGI? That right there tells you everything you need to know about how far Hollywood has fallen.

You know, now that I think about it, I don't remember much CGI in Barbie movie. Compared to your typical super hero movies, just 90% practical effects. Wow.

It really sucks that the execs at WB released Barbie on the same day as Oppenheimer just to spite Christopher Nolan, especially since it would have hurt Barbie’s box office just as much had it gone according to plan. It shows they don’t care about their own people nearly as much as they care about beating the competition. I’m truly glad their plan backfired so hard.
It's brilliant, actually. So many people are going to see both for the spectacle of it. Barbie is actually a terrible film but the novelty of seeing these two films together will guarantee sales that otherwise wouldn't have happened

One thing I haven’t seen too many people talk about is the fact that we usually consider dramatic or historical movies as prestige cinema and comedic movies are often swept aside. Even at the Oscars comedic performances are often left behind even if the comedic actors did as good at their roles as the dramatic actors at their roles.
With Barbenheimer we have two completely opposite films one comedy and one drama that’s both being considered Prestige cinema and the best movies of the year.

Absolutely adore Barbie, and saving Oppenheimer for tomorrow. All I can say is this. I NEED MORE. I'm not talking about sequels. I'm not talking about prequels. I'm talking about a departure from the same franchise slop Hollywood has given us over the last decade. I could not care less about another super hero film, another Transformers, another Mission Impossible, another Indiana Jones - this time he's in his 80s!!! It's boring! We are desperate need of a cinematic renaissance, and I hope this summer proves it.

That's a bad take, and just harmful to you if you love movies. Across the Spider-Verse is a super-hero film, Everything Everywhere All At Once is about a rehashed multiverse concept, Puss In Boots the Last Christmas Wish is based on a safe, popular IP that you could say baits nostalgia.
Just because a movie has things going on in its favour doesn't mean it has to be bad.
@@someoneyouprobablyknowandl9964 Across the Spider-verse is in a league unto it's own. Last Wish is literally the first time the Shrek IP has been any good in twenty years. And EEAAO is a fully original film, rooted only in a science fiction concept that hasn't actually been done to death outside the super hero genre. I do love movies. I recognize quality in film. But I would chuck Spider-verse into the oblivion if it meant we could hold onto stylized animation, but utilize it for fully original stories.
The ending of Oppenheimer hit me like an atomic bomb (I believe it's Nolan's best movie yet, and I've been a huge fan for over a decade), then later that evening the delightfully strange Barbie made me (somewhat) belief in humanity again.
Absolutely recommending this double feature if you have the time, but be sure to take a break for some food and thoughts in between.
I hope to do the double feature approach; I’ll start with Barbie and finish off with Oppenheimer, which seems to be the opposite of your viewing.
We did everything that was not recommended just because it's how it fit into our schedules lol we saw barbie first, then Oppenheimer and we saw them back to back. We even missed some of the credits of barbie because oppenheimer was about to begin. We walked into his theatre and caught one trailer before the movie started (in an amc theatre so there are always a lot)
Still great. Still recommend. Probably recommend the other way around though 😂

My brother went to a birthday party weeks before the movies dropped and the theme of the birthday was still Barbie/Oppenheimer. Honestly we need more movies like this that drop at the same time, they work so well together!
The new Saw and Paw Patrol movie are releasing in the same day this September but i doubt it'll make the same impact as Barbenheimer. This is a high bar competition, it would be hard to gain the same impact. I think if we wanna get another Barbenheimer situation, let DC and Marvel releases their movies in the same day, see what happens lmao

Honestly, I feel like right now Hollywood is being built up from new foundations that isn’t influenced by any franchise but instead by the works of creative artists. This is a prime example of why the movie theater won’t die, it’s because of events like these.
It does have to rebuild this tho. And this is a fantastic start. After so many years of franchises and such and covid. It was dying. It's got a pulse, now to keep it going.

I generally want Oppenheimer to have a big success on the long run, it’s not just an important/controversial historical event, but it’s a breath a fresh air hearing about the film. Really, films should tackle on practical effects since it makes the film more unique and shows that time and effort was put into them. Great video.

"humans die, but ideas live forever." - ruth handler, barbie (2023). this immortality is ironically inherent in these two films about the complexities of being human, and i believe that it teaches an important lesson, both about film and about life; our intentions live long past our bodies, whether that be the emotion put into a movie or the way we share ourselves with the world in daily life.
Both movies are existential and talk about the inevitability of death. Which feels wrong because of how different they are in EVERY other way. Both brilliant (though I preferred Barbie personally)
I think this is a turning point in American culture. The youth does not want to escape reality. They want to learn from the mistake of prolonged generations (plural). The amazing part of it is, the generation of creators providing theses theatrical touchpoints as well as the generation of parents that is peers with these creators, are willing to empower the youth to sway the path of the American fate.
I can't wait until Gen Z'ers get their chances to make films and see what kind of stories they can tell
The Mario movie is the most successful movie of the year, and it's got nothing to do with the real world. It's complete escapism.
And Across the Spiderverse is the second most successful 2023 film domestically, and it's also got little to do with everyday life.

With Barbenheimer, people who would normally only see one film or the other now give the other a chance. Fans of comedy give the historical drama a chance, and fans of historical drama give comedy a chance. Each film has something for everyone, something you can take away from it. Just yesterday I got dressed up like a doll to go see Barbie, and we had a blast. We’re going to see Oppenheimer next week (we just didn’t have enough time in the schedule to do both on one day) and I can’t be more excited. I became a fan of Christopher Nolan because of Interstellar, and reading the Science of Interstellar (a real book that discusses the real world science behind the film) made me fall in love with the way he does things. Barbie made me a fan of Greta Gerwig, and reinstilled that love for Barbie as a franchise into me. I remember fondly growing up with the direct-to-dvd movies the franchise had, so seeing Barbie on the big screen, with so many callbacks to older Barbie movies and dolls, felt like a dream.
Ultimately, the unlikely meeting of these two movies, and the internet blowing it up, means people are excited to go to the movies again. And that is worth it’s weight in gold.
The fact that both movies primarily used practical effects over cgi is the icing on the cake
I love this analysis. One thing I'd add, though, is that I don't think it's as surprising/impressive that Nolan's movie would attract teenagers today more than the latest action fare. I think teenagers in 2023 are acutely aware of the complex and existential struggles we face and longing not to be fed movies only as entertainment but movies that also wrestle with those dynamics (kinda like Every Everywhere All at Once).
Only speaking as an older Gen Z / cusp person here - I've been feeling like movies have been missing possibilities for meaningful, beautiful, artful storytelling in favor of just churning out more, for more money. And often to the detriment of the artists who make movies possible. It's refreshing seeing Barbie, Oppenheimer, and the Spider-Verse movies.
Barbenheimer was really good.
For Barbie, whole cast was great, but Ryan Gosling stole the show for me. Margot Robbie was such great casting for Barbie. The film really went beyond what you would expect and wove together a narrative about identity and finding your place in the world beyond what is foisted upon you due to your gender role. It really shows that everyone struggles with issues of identity because of the expectations that we all have to deal with.
For Oppenheimer, the cast from top to bottom was impressive. Cillian Murphy commanded your attention and was so captivating as the lead. Robert Downey Jr. also showed why he’s a talented actor beyond just blockbusters. As much as I love Iron Man and his Sherlock Holmes, it’s nice to see him return to dramatic work. Also Emily Blunt was sooo good in the last act. Made me wish she got more to do. I also wish Florence Pugh had more meat on the bone as well. Really loved how the film wasn’t about a triumphant sense of accomplishment about making a great scientific advancement. It was about the pressures that basically guaranteed that nuclear weapons would be created and how Oppenheimer has to wrestle with the weight of forces beyond his control. Truly it shows that human progress is a process of standing on your predecessors’ shoulders and how every little discovery funnels civilization down to the path that we know today. In some ways the nuclear arms race was fueled by forces beyond our control, and we have to deal with our own complicity and responsibility within that system. The ending shot was so effective.
Barbenheimer was such a fun time at the theater 😏

Barbenheimer reminds me of July 2003... when Legally Blonde and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines battled it out as the same weekend as well. (Chick flick vs. Earth blowing itself with missles/bombs)

barbenheimer makes me so happy. i love going to the movies and every time i go i notice how empty theaters are. when i went in to see barbie, boom packed theater. a few days later i went to see oppenheimer, and once again, packed theater. its insane how two entirely different films have attracted the interest of the general public.
I can already hear Chris Gore and Criticaldrinker talking about "Barbie" saying "This is how Margot Robbie sees MEN! She was the producer on it, so she sees men like this, she sees motherhood like this!" and "Margot Robbie was a gift, smart, funny, beautiful...and she hates men, and motherhood. This movie hates men, and she hates you for being a man. That's all I got to say. Go away now."

That's exactly what the CD's video on this is like, and the comments almost all agree. Even without having seen the movie yet, it seems pretty clear to me that he's paranoidly projecting and it's causing him to miss the point.

Reminds me a bit of when Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons came out on the same day. No sabotage was involved there but the fan stuff formed from that being both wholesome and brutal simultaneously was amazing.
I personally am someone who wouldn't have cared for Oppenheimer if it wasn't Nolan, but because of it I was instantly invested, and I'm extremely hyped to see it... even tho I'm a teen and this isn't my sort of movie at all
The best part of Barbenheimer is the homages and nods to Kubrick in both 😂 who would of thought of that!
All of Christopher Nolan’s movies ending gave me chills and goosebumps like ending of Dark Knight is heroic, ending of Inception is mind blowing, the ending of Dunkirk is cause of wars, the ending of Prestige is result on how two rivals that invoked other people dying.
However the ending of Oppenheimer it has different feels, I loved how Nolan recreated Oppenheimer’s speech at the end but in a visualization style and shows the representation of future use of his atomic bomb.

Just got done seeing barbie. I'm the exact opposite of the target demographic, and i still thought, despite it's annoying heavy-handed messaging, was still artistically creative and genuinely original. It's amazing what good art can overcome, even to someone like myself, who had every reason to despise it.
I can't wait for Oppenheimer Sunday.

I'm not the target demographic as well but I think it was fantastic, the message sure can be uncomfortable but it's not unreasonable or unnecessary. I could see many of my guy friends in Ken and if they can understand the message, they'll instantly become more likeable, especially by girls they constantly chase.
Oppenheimer was uncomfortable as well at many points but because we aren't politicians and decision makers, we didn't feel personal discomfort 🙃
The Barbenheimer viewing was truly amazing, the double feature was great
Went into Barbie expecting it to be cute, walked out of there stunned!!! Barbie dealing with existentialism and ken learning toxic masculinity. Oppenheimer was alright, mostly due to the fact that it’s about something we already know about lol buttt I gotta say the last hour was good. And my favorite part was the scene where he’s giving a speech to the audience on the bleachers. Best part of the movie and very encapsulating.

I know less about Gerwig but I have so much respect and adoration for projects that still use practice sets and hire extras as we’ve seen that the push towards cgi is a studio attempt to use [currently] nonunion cgi/vfx workers and the fact that both Nolan and Gerwig headed these massive projects with the insistence that sets are going to be made is just so wonderful to me
I'm excited about both movies because I'm sick of DC or Marvel stuff. Both are new and not part of a universe.
Well, Barbie was produced by Warner Bros, I like to believe that Barbie is the revenge of Warner against Nolan after he left them. But I agree with you, I'm tired of all these superheroe stuff, I'm fine that Nolan made The Dark Knight trilogy but I'm also glad that he moved on from the superheroe genre a while ago.

I saw the double bill and it was amazing! I think a lot of the hype comes from the fact that both films were geniunely incredible to a wide audience. As someone who doesn’t see loads of smaller films, I knew that these two were going to be amazing, and that’s rare nowadays. It was definitely the most excited for a film I’ve been in years

Hollywood is really going out with the bang, until they briskly give a solution to actors, writers, and animators. This was an incredibly well written and constructed video, 10/10! Such a well made essay for this phenomenon and its implications!

Thanks to talk the two movies together! I watched the two yesterday, thinking . One is to build a happy pinky world, encouraged by "be yourself", while the other is the termination of world, by the entire mankind together even with "good" intention.
I keep hearing folks report on how WB originally scheduled Barbie’s release date to mess with Nolan’s Oppenheimer: but that’s such a dick move to do it deliberately with malice. Barbenheimer weekend and beyond is such a great fun idea 🎉😁
The reason I am going to watch these is not just for the cinema experience is also because they came out on my birthday (they came out on the 20th of July where I live) and that was just perfect timing
Personally, I'm not really interested in going to see either of these films. In the case of Barbie, that has never been my cup of tea, though I do respect Greta Gerwig's artistic ambitions with this film and clear passion for the material. In the case of Oppenheimer, I'm not really interested in biopics despite my love of several of Christopher Nolan's previous films. I rather just watch a documentary on the subject.
Having said that, I do find the Barbenheimer phenomenon quite fascinating from an outsider perspective. The fact that what started out as a simple internet meme has grown into geniune anticipation for these two incredibly different films is quite remarkable.
It's more than a biopic, you should honestly give it a chance, Oppenheimer is Nolans magnum opus, it's a visually stunning film with deep exploration of a person's psyche and clashing perspective of the same event.
Nolan is very hit or miss with me, personally. Only a few of his films really wow'd me. This is to say, I went into Oppenheimer very apprehensive, especially after Tenet, and ended up enjoying it very much. Barbie on the other hand is 80% garbage, don't even bother. Unironically, the best parts of the film were Gosling's Ken being a moron and Michael Cera being Michael Cera.

I think we're finally out of the superhero creative wasteland era. the Marvel franchise has faltered this year and we're getting more hype behind original stories again.
I hope that true. I love comic and super hero movies but they have been over exposed.
I saw BOTH movies and liked both movies. I laughed my butt off at Barbie and dug the hell out of Oppenheimer but don't know if I could give another 3 hours for Oppenheimer cause I like to rewatch good movies and wish it makes a lot of money. Barbie is fun to watch with a big crowd if you want to laugh. Oppenheimer, ur for a treat with performances and others jaws being lowered as they listen to what's being said.
I watched Oppenbie instead of Barbenheimer, but still loved both. Pure kino across the board
Warner Bros. made a genius move, releasing Barbie and Oppenheimer the same day, hype for both plus majority of people bought tickets for the double screening of both movies, win win situation 👏👏👏

There's one problem though - big chunk of people aren't excited to see Oppenheimer/Barbie for the movie itself. They're only excited to take part in this social media made event. Too less extent with Barbie, I believe but that's beside the point. It's FOMO at it's worst and it does no service to the movie industry. It artificially fills pockets of studios. The studios writers and actors are actively fighting.
You can't deny the phenomenon here but let's not forget about the bigger picture

In my opinion, you underplay the perceived image of Oppenheimer. "Nolan has a reputation people will show up for, even for a drama they otherwise wouldn't see." It's a movie about the creation and creator of the most destructive weapon humanity has ever made, and one of the most decisive developments for the course of the world. Nolan definitely deserves immense credit for his reputation, but don't pin this movie's success so much on him. People were eager to learn about a point in history that they didn't know much about yet.

Barbie was joyful. a perfect movie. every scene was either funny and charming or heartbreaking but emotionally fulfilling. oppenheimer was just a little boring in the beginning and end but enthralling in the middle
This reminds me of the beautiful memes that arose from Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing Horizons.
Interesting take. This makes me consider another possibility. Perhaps this is an artistic Flashpoint/pivot point. Big flashy spectacle, but with a bit of thought and cognitive rigor - depth.

I wouldn’t rule it out. Especially when you consider that Nolan quit working with Warner Bros after the old regime that ran WB decided to put all of there major tent pole films in 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time which Nolan was against.

As a 13 year old I can condfidently say that I was super hyped for Oppenheimer I love history its my favorite subject thats the only class I am willing to awnser everyone question. Barbie is similar to another movie I liked that was also set in Los Angeles as the backdrop ( I have not seen barbie just the trailer) and featured an Australian lady in the lead role Called Xanadu 1980 Olivia Newton John. Like Barbie its a fantasy comes into real world movie. It had great music and interesting story but in 1980 did not do well at the box office. Audiences back then I guess were spoilt for choice on the great movies on offer in that era. Maybe if Greta Gerwig jumped in a time machine back to 1980 and directed Xanadu with Olivia Newton John it would have been a hit. Like you said the skill and talent of a Director can make or break a movie. I find similarities between Barbie and Xanadu released in 1980. One is doing brilliantly at the box office where as Xanadu bombed at the box office. Olivia Newton John was a real star and she deserved to go out on a high with Xanadu. I love Xanadu. More directed at a female audience than male but that movie rocks with great music and Gene Kelly. I only saw it first time on reruns on tv back in the mid 1990s.

The only annoying thing about this weekend are the "alpha male" types hating on Barbie because it's better box office performance thus far and it's rave reviews is "woke" and an attack on the male masculinity.
Barbie was always going to do better at the box office due to various factors. In regards to the ‘alpha male’ issue I don’t think it’s unjustified as people are sick to death of the wokeness in films. We don’t want political agendas shoved down our throats, it should raise debate instead of being forced.

when you were addressing the slog of other movies and everything I couldnt help but notice how it felt like you were really avoiding mentioning Spiderverse. you briefly mention it but it also does refute your point slightly that people are tired of sequels, tired of hero movies, and tired of big action and want family, but it does all that.
Spider-Verse is sort of the exception not the rule at the moment imo.
